The Bourne Academy, Bournemouth

The Bourne Academy, Bournemouth

Broxap Ltd

The Bourne Academy, Bournemouth was to undergo a £10 million renevation, a project that would include many newly constructed areas. The building was dreary and outdated, and to create an aspirational environment, to inspire students to achieve, it was necessary to greatly improve the facilities. The main part of the brief was to cover an area surrounded by 3 buildings with a tensile canopy. Curtain walling was required to the open side, along with fabric side sheets incorporating clear windows and a printed logo of the school.Broxap Ltd was successful in tendering to supply a range of its products throughout the Academy.Working with its designers, the client and the architect, Broxap developed a suitable scheme.Products included several Newcastle Senior mono-pitched covered walkways and Newcastle Senior symmetric walkways. The Keep It Kool division of Broxap provided four Cairns perimeter beam waterproof shade sails, a barrel vault entrance canopy and a large bespoke waterproof tensile canopy. The bespoke canopy spans an enclosed central eating and socialising area, which is laid with artificial grass.Other products supplied were Wardale cycle shelters, Wardale cycle compounds, picnic units, seating, barriers and planters.

Helmsman

Meadows Business Park is undergoing a major repositioning, providing modern working for a post covid-19 world. With 3 refurbished buildings positioned in landscaped grounds, providing workspaces, offices, central café, gym, cycle storage and showers. Located next to Blackwater Railway station, tenants of Meadows Business Park can enjoy pop up shops, street food markets, walks around the 100 acre shepherds meadow and even Peloton bikes, as well as a range of classes in the gym.As part of the refurbishment of these buildings, we worked alongside OD Interiors to manufacture and install the lockers and bench seating for the cycle storage and shower areas. As part of the project, we provided 22 wet specification Laminate Z Lockers for the male changing rooms, 22 wet specification Laminate Z Lockers for the female changing rooms and bench seating for both changing areas and the cycle storeroom. The stunning Laminate Z Lockers were manufactured with an aluminium body, stainless steel door frame and Abet Laminate doors. The colours chosen were Mountain Oak and Ice White from Abet’s range of laminate colours. We work with a variety of suppliers of laminate, allowing us to offer a large selection of colours and finishes, from carbon-neutral options, wood effect styles, through to bright pops of colour. In each changing room, 13 of the 22 Z Lockers were fitted with seat stands, with the remaining 9 lockers fitted to stands. The frames for the stands and seat stands are powder coated in RAL colour white, with the seat slats in Mountain Oak laminate to match the locker doors. To keep the project slick and uniform, the end panels, infills and the cladding to hide the stands are in the Ice White laminate, also matching the doors. The locks chosen for the project were the Digilock Versa Keypad locks. These are a great choice for both assigned, or shared use, and so were perfect for the shared changing rooms at Meadow Business Centre. Plus, they look great as a contrasting matt black colour against the light doors of the Z Lockers. It was great to work alongside OD Interiors again on this project and look forward to some more exciting projects in the future. If you are looking for Z Lockers, or have a similar project you need help with. Falco UK Ltd

Falco has completed the roll-out of the UK’s first ever series of smart bike hangars for Brighton & Hove City Council. The scheme which got underway towards the end of 2022, involved the manufacture, supply and installation of smart bike hangars with mobile app access, to provide the seaside resort with a total fleet of 150 bike hangars, equalling 900 secure on-street cycle parking spaces. The 18 month programme involved installing bike hangars across Brighton within four different tranches, at 39 different locations, with hangar number 150 installed on Langdale Road, Hove last week. Each futuristic bike hangar provides Brighton residents with quick and easy accessibility via the users smartphone. Case Study – Liverpool Heart & Chest COVID-19 Testing Facility

Twinfix Limited

When Liverpool’s leading specialist heart and chest hospital trust wanted to set-up a drive through COVID-19 testing facility, Twinfix were approached by Actua to find a solution to provide shelter within their client’s COVID 19 testing pick up points. The area was a small courtyard and the proposal was to create a turning circle where vehicles could drive in and pick up their testing kit and drive out, the canopy would provide shelter for the vehicles whilst doing so.There were further complications as the area is also used for general hospital deliveries therefore meaning the height of the canopy needed to facilitate lorry/wagons.With the hospital’s requirements in mind, Twinfix designed two bespoke structures spanning a total of 82 sqm:Section 1: Free standing duo-pitch canopy completely independent of the building·Section 2: Wall mounted lean-to mono-pitch canopy with vertical glazed screen to side & front elevation.Section 1 comprised of galvanised steel posts with upper aluminium sub-frame roof, whereas, the full structure of Section 2 was manufactured in aluminium. Both structures were fitted with our non-fragile Multi-Link-Panel roof-glazing system glazed with 25mm clear polycarbonate.Joe Astley, Capital Projects Officer at LHCH commented: “The trust is very pleased with the services received. From a quick turnaround in manufacturing to a trouble free and speedy installation, Twinfix did a great job at LHCH.”These canopies not only look great, but also utilise the outdoor space providing shelter for patients and staff throughout the testing process.

They have a block of residential houses available for those in need of 24-hour care, so their families and full-time carers can have some time to themselves. The Building Surveyor from Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council reached out to Able Canopies Ltd. because their staff were accessing two separate buildings with no shelter between them. They wanted to connect the buildings as cost effectively as possible and keep staff dry when moving from one building to the other. The SolutionOne of their options would have been to build an extension that connects the buildings however this would be very costly and would cause a lot of disruption to the staff and residents. The perfect solution which is cost effective and causes minimum disruption is a covered walkway canopy.Simon, our Area Sales Manager met the Building Surveyor on site and discussed the canopy options available that would provide the benefits required. The Devoke Junior Walkway Canopy was the chosen shade and shelter solution because they required a canopy that was a free standing structure. They also liked the appearance of the Devoke Junior including the curvature of the roof.Following the initial proposals, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council then put the project out to Tender and the winning bid was from R H Fullwood Ltd. We had worked with them before on various projects and have a great working relationship with them. The InstallationThe Devoke Junior Free Standing Canopy allows for the roof to over-sail the existing buildings’ rear extensions, so the rain doesn’t run down in front of the doors. This was perfect because it means staff and residents will no longer get wet when entering or leaving the walkway and buildings.Because the two buildings that the canopy connects are not parallel; one is further back from the other, and there was also a step down from one area to the other, we all agreed to ’split’ the walkway into two separate canopies. The width of the Walkway only needed to cover the existing footpath, this allowed for the front foundations to be in the grass away from the path. This meant we were able to save time on the installation because we didn’t need to remove and reinstall the existing paving slabs. In September 2022, we supplied and installed a 10.96m x 2m and a 7.34m x 2m Devoke Junior Free-Standing Canopy connecting the adjacent buildings, keeping staff dry and sheltered. The canopies were installed over 4 days and the staff and residents moved into one building whilst we worked on the other, and then moved to the first building whilst we completed the second canopy installation. This ensured we caused minimum disruption to all on site and allowed them to continue with their usual routines.

The bikehangar scheme in Waltham Forest

The bikehangar scheme in Waltham Forest

Cyclehoop

The London Borough of Waltham Forest jumped onto the Bikehangar Rentals Scheme in 2015 as part of the council’s Mini Holland programme. The borough is set to become one of the most cycle-friendly boroughs in London. In March 2017, we celebrated the installation of the 100th Bikehangar with a special photoshoot with the residents and the local cycling officer.Waltham Forest’s special 100th Bikehangar resident, Yvonne says;“The Bikehangar is going to benefit me hugely, I have arthritis and am unable to carry my bike up the stairs to my flat on the first floor. Now I don’t need to worry about it.”After a busy year of installations, we reached the 250th Bikehangar in the borough by July 2018. To mark this milestone, our designers at Cyclehoop have customised a very special Bikehangar with an image of the reservoir in the Walthamstow Wetlands. Residents of this very special Bikehangar will be able to enjoy this special design, while having the piece of mind that their bikes are safe and dry.Find out more here: Waltham Forest celebrates their 250th Bikehangar in the borough! To date, we have installed 250 Bikehangars in the borough providing 1,500 cycle parking spaces. Reaching this milestone is a great reflection of London’s growing cycling culture. The capital has made leaps and bounds in the development of its cycle infrastructure over the past few years, going beyond simply painting blue cycle lanes on busy roads and actually creating fully segregated cycle superhighways. Our Bikehangars dotted around the city are just one example of this hard work.Waltham Forest’s Cycling Officer, Eric Duval said:“Finding somewhere to leave your cycle at home can be difficult and a barrier to cycling before you even start. We want everybody to have somewhere to park by 2020 and Bikehangars are the perfect way to remove this barrier. The demand for secure residential cycle parking has grown from 100 requests in 2015 to over 2000 and we are currently working on rolling out a further 30 in the coming months. As a result of Cyclehoop delivering our project, we have been able to complement the Mini Holland programme by providing over 700 cycle parking spaces in 2.5 years.”

Etihad Stadium

Etihad Stadium

Brett Martin Daylight Systems

Marlon CS was chosen as the glazing option for the first phase of the expansion for the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City FC’s home ground.Clear Marlon CS allows for a high level of light transmission, an important requirement for football stadia as it not only provides a bright sheltered stand for spectators but promotes a healthy pitch without shadows, a must for televised matches. The success for this product is shown through Etihad Stadium as almost 1500m² of Marlon CS already glazed the existing canopy, with a further 4,000m² of Clear 2mm Marlon CS chosen for the construction of a new third tier. When used in Etihad Stadium, Marlon CS rooflights and side-lights provide light, bright stands where spectators are protected from the weather. This light weight sheet with impact resistance and exceptional spanning capabilities is ideal for installation in the metal structures favoured by stadia designers. Co-extruded UV protection cuts out 98% of harmful radiation reducing the effects of weathering and tinted options allow solar control.Engineered for use in roof light and side-light applications, it has a 10 year light transmission and a 3 year weather breakage warranty due to its strength and impact resistant design.Technical support was provided from design right through to installation. Since the stadium is an oval shape, each sheet of the polycarbonate had to be cut to fit exactly. By having the technical support alongside the assembly of the rooflights and side-lights, ensured no mistakes were made and allowed for a much easier installation process.

Hillingdon Hospital - Coniston wall mounted/Rear steel goal post canopy

Able Canopies Ltd

The BriefHillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge, London were undergoing a refurbishment and required additional facilities to help keep their patients, staff and visitors dry and sheltered when arriving and leaving the hospital. The project, which was managed by Kier Construction and Blue Iris Partnerships, included a number of canopies along the entrance to their emergency department where patients and ambulances arrive 24/7.A speedy installation was an important factor, because the hospital had an ever-increasing need for outside cover due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Their staff, patients and visitors had to wait outside more frequently due to the current restrictions in place. The SolutionWhen putting our product forward to the Architect, Kier Construction explained that while our product wasn’t specified, the main features were in fact equal to the specified product and are designed for use in commercial settings, making it the perfect solution. This product is the Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy which is an extremely versatile, commercial grade structure that met all the features required by both the Architect and the hospital including: A mono-pitch structure, integral guttering and drainage to the ground floor with no visible gutters, constructed from 100% non-corrosive material (aluminium) and a non-fragile polycarbonate roof system.Even though the Coniston is a wall mounted structure, some of the canopies detailed in this project needed to be free standing as the existing ramp that the canopy would cover is a distance from the wall. This was not an issue as the Coniston can be installed with rear posts transforming it into a free standing canopy.

Lambeth Adapted Bikehangar

Lambeth Adapted Bikehangar

Cyclehoop

Access to secure, on-street cycle parking can have a big impact on people’s lives, making cycling more feasible, easier and more convenient. However, conventional cycle parking solutions often cannot accommodate larger non-standard cycles such as handcycles, tricycles and recumbents. This creates a barrier to usage and ownership for non-standard cycle users who do not have convenient private storage space.Working in partnership with Lambeth Council, Cyclehoop provided a specially adapted Bikehangar to accommodate a recumbent tandem bike for the Charles family and their son Isaac, who has Down’s Syndrome.Cycling is a great activity for Isaac, combining exercise, socialising and the outdoors. He and his father Tagore ride a tandem bike with a recumbent front seat made by specialist German manufacturer Hase, which Tagore acquired with help from Wheels for Wellbeing and London Recumbents. The bike gives Isaac an unobstructed view ahead and allows the pair to communicate while they ride.Prior to the Bikehangar, the bike was stored indoors, taking up valuable space in the kitchen. Tagore had to carry the 20kg+ bike up and down a flight of stairs, making each outing a difficult undertaking. How Cyclehoop adapted the Bikehangar Having received the details and measurements of the bike, our design team got to work specifying the Bikehangar adaptations. The most important factor is to understand the specific needs of the user; in this scenario Tagore can operate the door and load the bike in and out of the Bikehangar. Further adaptations such as ramps or platforms were not required. The standard floating rack arrangement was removed and a high-security ground anchor with Sold Secure Pedal Cycle Diamond accreditation was chosen to provide a suitable locking point for the bike’s low slung frame. For the unit’s standard cycle users, a high density rack module provides support and secure locking points. The adapted Bikehangar was installed by the Cyclehoop team in March 2023.In Use The adapted Bikehangar makes a big difference to the Charles family, Tagore no longer has to lift the bike up and down the stairs, risking damage or even injury. The bike doesn’t occupy space in the kitchen and the process of going out for a ride is now substantially easier and safer, leading to more frequent outings for Isaac. The two Bikehangar spaces for standard cycles are rented to other residents on the street.“The adapted Bikehangar has transformed our family’s cycling experience. No longer burdened by the logistical challenges of storing and accessing our recumbent tandem bike, we can now enjoy the freedom and joy of riding together more conveniently. It has brought us closer, allowing us to explore the world around us with ease. We are grateful to Cyclehoop and Lambeth Council for making this possible.”– Tagore CharlesAt Cyclehoop we believe the benefits of the bike should be available to all. We’re delighted to help Isaac and Tagore enjoy cycling more conveniently and more often. We hope the adapted Bikehangar will inspire similar projects in the future. We would like to express our thanks to the Charles family and the cycle parking team at Lambeth for their help.“At Wheels for Wellbeing we know that the right secure cycle parking solution is key to owning your own cycle, especially if it features bespoke adaptations and/or bears a large price tag (both are often the case when you’re a disabled cyclist). I am therefore thrilled to see that the Charles family have been provided with an accessible cycle hangar, on their street, enabling them to cycle as often as they wish. This was thanks to the council putting in place a simple mechanism for residents to indicate what type of cycle they ride (not assuming that everyone rides a bicycle) and discussions with the provider of cycle hangars who made the modifications requested by this particular family. This is true accessibility in action: a system which works for the majority AND which is also ready to adapt when needed. Well done Lambeth Council and Cyclehoop!!”– Isabelle Clement – Director, Wheels for Wellbeing

The bikehangar scheme in Hackney Council

The bikehangar scheme in Hackney Council

Cyclehoop

Our Bikehangar Rentals Scheme was first taken on by the London Borough of Hackney in July 2013.Each Bikehangar provides six spaces to securely store bicycles with each space available for residents to rent. The award-winning design is an effective way to protect bikes from theft and tough weather conditions where outdoor storage space is limited. This made the Bikehangar an ideal solution for Hackney Council to offer its residents, where space is at a premium. The success of the scheme has thrived since it small beginnings. In 2016, we were delighted to mark the 150th Bikehangar to be installed in the borough with a customised unit. The special edition Bikehangar, which provides cycle parking for six bikes – was commissioned by Hackney Council and features a customised design conceived by London street artist Tony Driver. It was great to be able to collaborate with a local street artist on this project. To date, we have installed 308 Bikehangars in the London Borough of Hackney (including Hackney Homes) providing 1,848 secure cycle parking spaces.Hackney Council are eager to become one of the most cycle-friendly boroughs in London, therefore reaching this milestone is something to be incredibly proud of. This is a great reflection of the thriving London cycling culture, with one in six people cycling, and more than half a million journeys made by bike every day. The capital has gained huge momentum in the development of its cycle infrastructure over the past few years, going beyond simply painting blue cycle lanes on busy roads and actually creating fully segregated cycle superhighways. Our Bikehangars dotted around the city are just one example of this hard work.

PlasProtek Bollard Cover Sleeve - Bristol

PlasProtek Bollard Cover Sleeve - Bristol

IAE

IAE’s PlasProtek Bollard Sleeves came to the rescue at the last minute for a new development near Bristol. The development was due to put on a promotion event but with only a few days to go before the big day, the protection bollards installed at the site had problems with their coating. The bollard had been wrapped without being completely dry, and when the wrapping was being removed, sections of the coating was coming off as well. The bollards held a prominent position at the front of the units. The damaged coating on the bollards would definitely be noticed on the promotion day and would make a bad impression on potential clients.A fast solution was needed. An attempt was made to touch up the coating with paint. However the results were considered unacceptable for what was supposed to be a brand new development as the poor finish was noticeable from a few feet away.IAE had already supplied the site with Circonomy Cycle Shelters and Vmex Perimeter Fencing, and came up with the suggestion on using its PlasProtek Bollard Sleeve to cover the bollards.A sample was rushed to site, and the sleeve was signed off as the solution to the problem.A batch of sleeves big enough to cover all the bollards on the development was shipped to site, arriving the day before the promotion event, which was plenty of time as the sleeves are so quick and easy to install. As an easy to install, and easy to replace alternative to powder coating, the developer has decided to specify the sleeves on all their bollards from the very start on future projects.

No More Rushing in from the Rain for Rush Green Primary School

Able Canopies Ltd

Rush Green Primary School, LondonClient: London Borough of Barking & DagenhamProduct: The Coniston Wall Mounted CanopySize: 16.3m x 2.2mFrame Colour: Hipca WhiteInstallation Date: June 2023Brief Having worked with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham before on a number of projects, they contacted us again regarding their most recent project at Rush Green Primary School. The school which is located in Dagenham were having works completed which included a single storey extension, internal alterations, and refurbishment. As part of the works, they required a wall mounted canopy in their quad courtyard area to provide shade and shelter all year round.Proposal As requested, we provided an estimate for a Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy with a length of 16.3 metres and a projection of 2.2 metres. Because the Coniston is mounted to a wall, it requires a suitable wall to fix to; the building at Rush Green Primary School was a block construction which was covered with render, which is one of the many ideal wall constructions for the Coniston’s requirements. In the case where a wall may not have a suitable construction for a wall mounted canopy, we can supply the Coniston as a free-standing canopy with rear posts. Alternatively, we also have a number of free standing canopies that are similar in appearance to the Coniston which are the Grange Free Standing Canopy and for those with lower budgets, the Grange Junior Free Standing Canopy.Solution Upon comparing our canopy quotation to two other companies, an order was placed for our Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy in May 2023.At the pre-site stage, there was a number of points to be discussed outside of the usual specifics which were:Foundations: Unless otherwise stated, foundations are included in all our canopy quotations. The flooring in at Rush Green Primary School featured raised decking, so we needed to investigate the area underneath the decking to check it was suitable for our foundations and they were.Access and Obstructions: The quad area features a pond which could have made an obstruction however, it was agreed that the pond would be covered over with strong boards so we could work over it.The canopy was installed at the start of June 2023 as scheduled with no problems along the way.If you have a similar project in mind, contact us today to request a free estimate or discuss a bespoke canopy with us.
