Manchester Piccadilly Station Takes Delivery of Extensive Falco Cycle Parking Infrastructure

Falco UK Ltd

Manchester Piccadilly Station has received a huge cycling boost after Falco manufactured and installed a series of 228 mixed-use cycle parking spaces across five separate areas at the north west city’s principal railway station.Working in conjunction with Network Rail, TfGM and Avanti West Coast, the scheme involved the manufacture, supply and installation of a number of mixed-use cycle parking systems with associated canopies, along with the provision of a cycle repair and maintenance station to allow commuters to carry out cycle maintenance whilst on the go.Falco provided station operator, Network Rail, with feasibility studies, completed landlords consent submission, contract planning and worked with station staff and stakeholders to re-configure the stations CCTV systems to ensure full coverage of the new cycle racks. Falco provided a full turn key solution, including required civil engineering works and hand back documentation to ultimately deliver the full implementation of the new cycle parking infrastructure. This installation forms part of TfGM’s continued commitment to improving active travel facilities across the region. The new facility benefits from Falco’s modular product range of shelter and cycle parking products enabling Network Rail to ‘mix and match’ the products to meet the different requirements of cyclists. The FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier rack is the UK’s most popular high capacity space saving cycle rack, whilst the FalcoRail canopy provides both single and double sided shelter with the option to extend in the future to meet growing requirements.Conveniently located across five separate areas, which includes an exclusive staff only secure cycle parking facility, the extensive installation took place at:Station ApproachInstallation of two x 4m FalcoRail single sided cycle shelters to accommodate 36nr cycles using FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier racks, installation of a 7m FalcoRail double-sided cycle shelter to accommodate 64nr cycles using FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier racks and installation of a Falcofix 2.0 Cycle pump and repair station.Fairfield StreetRemoval and disposal of existing cycle parking and installation of two x 5m and one x 4m FalcoRail Single sided cycle shelters to accommodate 66nr cycles using FalcoLevel-Premium Plus two-tier cycle racks.Exclusive Staff Cycle ParkingRemoval and disposal of existing cycle stores and installation of two FalcoLok secure cycle stores to accommodate 48nr cycles using FalcoVert-Pro semi vertical cycle stands.North DeckInstallation of a 9m FalcoGamma cycle shelter to shelter nine existing Sheffield stands.Fairfield Street Under CroftSupply and installation of seven root fixed Sheffield Stands to accommodate 14 bikes. The flagship station is fitted out with the latest FalcoLevel Premium+ two tier cycle racks which incorporate an integral gas strut to enable easier lifting of heavier bikes as well as additional locking points so that cyclists have multiple security points for their bikes. In addition there is a mix of largely two-tier as well as Sheffield cycle stands and semi-vertical racks to provide more traditional cycle parking where people are unable to use the two tier racks or if users have an adaptive / non standard cycle. In addition to the Manchester Piccadilly Station scheme shown here, Falco has just completed the roll-out of secure cycle hubs across ten of Avanti West Coast’s franchised network - connecting six of the UK’s largest cities, over 350 cycle parking spaces for a number of stations on the Govia Thameslink Railway network, over 600 cycle parking spaces for a number of stations on the Abellio Greater Anglia network and over 1,000 cycle parking spaces on a number of stations on the Abellio West Midlands Trains network.Falco’s design team works in conjunction with designers and specifiers to optimise the products and provision of a scheme. Circonomy Cycle Shelter - Severn Beach, Avonmouth

Circonomy Cycle Shelter - Severn Beach, Avonmouth

IAE

Cycle storage for new industrial units and office spaceAs part of a new development near Bristol, which included 4 new industrial units set for various uses, IAE Shelter Division supplied a series of Circonomy Cycle Shelters to provide dry and secure cycle storage, with the aim of encouraging more cycle use on the daily commute. The industrial units varied in size and included manufacturing, warehousing, and office space. As the units varied in size, each unit required a different number of cycle spaces. This is both for practical purposes, and to ensure the development meets BREEAM guidelines, which require a certain amount of dry, secure cycle storage spaces, depending on the number of people occupying the building, and the size of the building.Extendable Modular DesignThe Circonomy Cycle Shelters modular design meant it was ideal to meet these requirements. An individual Circonomy Cycle shelter fits 5 cycle hoops and is suitable to securely store 10 bicycles. Extensions can be added to the end of the shelter to increase capacity as needed. Individual shelter units, cycle hoops and extensions are all available from stock at IAE Shelters. The modular design meant the same style of shelter could be used across all the different sized units on the development to provide a consistent look across the site.Low Impact StylingBREEAM guidelines also state that the cycle storage has to be in a prominent, easy to access location to encourage cycle use, and not hidden around the back of the unit to hide it from site. The low impact styling of the Cicrconomy Cycle Shelter provides an unobtrusive look and means the shelter can be easily dropped into a site layout without concerns about it affecting the overall look of the project. To finish the design, the galvanised frames were powder coated anthracite grey to give a contemporary look.Specifying IAE SheltersThe Circonomy Cycle Shelter is IAE's most popular shelter, with hundreds installed around the country. To add the shelter to your project check out the featured products section below, or contact IAE Shelters directly.

Able Canopies Ltd

Aberfoyle Primary School – Stirling, ScotlandProduct: Denver Timber Cycle ShelterSize: 6.2m x 1.6mTimber Frame Stain Colour: Light OakContractor: AKP Scotland Ltd.Architect: Wardell ArmstrongInstallation Date: May 2021The BriefAKP Scotland Ltd. are an award-winning principal contractor based in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. They were working on a project at Aberfoyle Primary School in Stirling which required a complete refurbishment of their stunning gothic style, 151-year-old listed building.Part of the project included the requirement for a cycle shelter within the school’s nursery playground. The Architects, Wardell Armstrong specified our Denver Timber Cycle Shelter in the setting out drawings, which were then sent to us to us an invitation to tender by AKP Scotland Ltd.The Solution Because the product had already been specified, this was a simple case of sending over our costs for the size required which was 6.2m x 1.6m.The Denver is constructed from stunning curved Glulam timber beams which are manufactured by gluing together laminates of timber under pressure and heat that are then perfectly planed. The resulting beams are strong, stable, and corrosion proof with significant advantages over structural steel and concrete. This makes the Denver Timber Cycle Shelter a great choice for this project; because the school building was a very old, listed building, the aesthetics of a curved timber structure would fit in perfectly, keeping a traditional, natural appearance. The Installation An order was placed in December 2020 with the installation planned for May 2021 as set out in the contractors’ building programme. The contractor installed a concrete base and the installation of the shelter went ahead as scheduled on 24-26th May 2021, taking just two days to install. The contractor supplied and installed the cycle hoops themselves once we had left site. The end result is a striking curved timber cycle shelter that fits in flawlessly with the recently refurbished Early Year’s playground area, finishing the project off perfectly.

Salford Royal’s New Greater Manchester Major Trauma Hospital Cycle Hub

Falco UK Ltd

This is the latest cycle hub designed, manufactured, supplied and installed at the new Salford Royal Greater Manchester Major Trauma Hospital, located at the heart of the Salford Royal Pendleton site.Based on the flagship FalcoLok design, the 5m x 4m glass clad cycle hub is coupled with the FalcoLevel-Eco two-tier cycle parking system, providing secure parking for up to twenty bikes.Back In 2020, Falco installed a large hub at Salford Royal to accommodate 20 cycles with FalcoLevel-Premium+ two-tier racks. In May 2022, Falco were asked to visit Turnpike House by the same client to look at installing a secure shelter that wasn’t too imposing in height and size. The shelter was for staff to replace an old tired flat roof structure. In September last year, the hospital required a further 3m x 3m cycle hub to cope with increasing demand for secure cycle parking. The cycle hub shown here is the fourth to be commissioned by the hospital and to keep the same theme as the previous three sites, Falco used the same mechanical code lock and 11.5mm toughened laminated heat soaked glass in glass clamps, then customized the graphics to match, providing a coherent series of cycle parking across the Salford Royal site. The steelwork of the cycle hub was powder coated in the same attractive NHS blue RAL colour. The whole shelter is a bespoke contemporary design of the classic FalcoHub shelter, which features clean lines through the glass cladding and supported by stainless steel glass clamps. The steelwork is hot dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461 and also meets UK structural design laws with EN 1090 accreditation. Rainwater is collected via innovative integral gutters as part of the roof system and a bespoke bund ensure that the cycle hub is weather proof! In addition to the cycle hub shown here for Royal Salford, Falco has also recently installed cycle hubs for many locations across the UK including Fairfield General Hospital, Rochdale Infirmary, Stromness Travel Centre in the Orkney Islands, Crewe, Runcorn, Birmingham International, Warrington Bank Quay and Carlisle station for Avanti West Coast, Bradford Royal Infirmary and St Luke’s Hospital for Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation, The Royal Oldham Hospital for Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, Ninewells Hospital & Medical School in Dundee and a bespoke cycle hub for Leicester City Council. For more information about the project here at Salford Royal or how Falco can assist your cycle parking scheme, please contact our helpful sales team on 01538 380080.
