The Curve, Slough - Retractable Seating for a Multipurpose Community Venue

The Curve, Slough - Retractable Seating for a Multipurpose Community Venue

Audience Systems Ltd

At this community venue in Southeast England, we refurbished an existing retractable seating system to produce a dramatic change. Refurbishment has allowed the customer to transform the auditorium, but with less cost, use of materials, and disruption than replacing the whole retractable system. Use of vinyl fabric on the new seating also means that the auditorium is easier to sanitise. The Curve is multipurpose cultural destination in the heart of Slough, UK. As well as the auditorium (“The Venue”), this remarkable looking building houses an array of community spaces including a library, café, gallery, museum, learning spaces and register office. When The Curve was first built, Audience Systems equipped The Venue with a retractable seating system complete with benches. A few years later, the retractable platforms were still in excellent working order. However, the team at the Curve wanted to upgrade the auditorium in order to increase The Venue’s attractiveness as a theatre, and bring in more events and bookings. The Curve approached the Audience Systems aftersales team to refurbish the existing retractable platforms and fit them with chairs in place of benches.Keeping the existing retractable understructure, Audience Systems’ after sales team devised an upgrade package to give the platforms a “good-as-new” look. They stripped and replaced decks and steps, and swapped the benches for 174 Evolve High Back chairs. The chairs not only look fresh, they also offer outstanding support. Upholstered in a vinyl fabric in four restful shades, the chairs can be cleaned with most household cleaners. With its unique colour scheme of four restful shades, the new seating looks welcoming too.The team also added grab rails beside the aisles to help less mobile spectators to move more confidently around the auditorium. These don’t have to be removed before the retractable platforms are closed – they can simply be folded down onto the steps. The team at The Curve are delighted with the transformation. Leo Yousef, Hubs and Community Buildings Lead said, “The refurbishment really looks nice – we’re very pleased with it! And working with Audience Systems has been a very good experience.”  Evolve is a new chair design from Audience Systems; a modern take on our classic and popular Espace chair. Like the Espace, Evolve folds into a very small space when unoccupied, creating ample room for people to pass in the aisle. It does this without sacrificing seated comfort or style! Evolve is suitable for use on retractable platforms, as a fixed chair, or as a removable chair (as seen in the front row here at The Curve). Photographs by Mark Cameron

Bartlam Library, Selwyn College, Cambridge - Retractable Conference and Lecture Seating

Audience Systems Ltd

A striking new building at Selwyn College, Cambridge houses the Bartlam Library and this flexible space - the Quarry Whitehouse Auditorium. The Auditorium is a multipurpose facility fit for the 21st Century, and shows off brilliantly what can be achieved when retractable seating is combined with movable walls. The auditorium is not only for use by the college, it is also intended for public events, and forms part of the university’s portfolio of conference spaces. With the two spaces separated or combined, with or without the retractable seating and/or stacking seating, there is scope for events of all kinds: A conference with a tiered auditorium and a separate reception area, a networking event in a large open space, a meeting with stacking chairs in an informal layout. From the start, extensive audio visual technology has been integrated into the space with a view to hosting hybrid in-person / online events. The retractable seating we provided features our gorgeous Recital seats; spacious theatre chairs which seem to defy logic in their ability to fold away into retractable platforms. We also provided some matching stacking chairs with trolleys, which are not seen in these photos. The retractable platforms themselves are power operated so that the space can be transformed quickly with minimal manual handling.Funded by donors and alumni, this £13m project is named after two of its most generous benefactors.

Plymstock Arts Centre, Devon - Retractable Theatre Seating

Audience Systems Ltd

This brand new arts facility is a fantastic new asset for Plymstock School, near Plymouth. Audience Systems began working on the project from the very start with architects Ayres Haynes, ensuring the building design and seating layout could work together perfectly in terms of access, functionality, design and sightlines. We then worked with main contractors Ryearch to see the installation through to its completion and sign off. The seating consists of 344 Accolade seats on a bank of power operated retractable seating. The retractable platforms are fitted with a partial opening system, allowing a limited number of rows to be opened out for smaller performances, or where more floor space is required. The retractable platforms open out over a sprung floor by Junckers, so Audience Systems worked carefully with the client to ensure that the floor was reinforced in the right places to safely bear the seating structure. An extra row of chairs fixed to the front of the system cleverly creates an extra row of seating. To the rear there is a tiering structure with a further 54 Accolade fixed chairs. All chairs are upholstered in a 100% recycled polyester fabric, and the mix of blues and greys creates a calm and inspiring backdrop for artistic performances of all kinds. “From start to finish Audience Systems were very professional. The sales team were extremely patient and spent a lot of time working with the Architect on layout options to ensure that everyone was happy with the final proposal. The delivery team were efficient, safety conscious and tidy. The final result is amazing.” Julie Boyes, Contracts Manager, Ryearch Ltd.

Cardinal Wiseman School - Retractable Seating for Multipurpose School Hall

Audience Systems Ltd

Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School in Coventry has transformed its offering to dance, drama and arts students – and to the wider community – by turning its school hall into a modern theatre space. The 1960s hall has been upgraded to become a high specification performance venue, complete with a 288-seat power operated retractable seating by Audience Systems, as well as state-of-the-art audiovisual equipment and lighting. To add to the appeal, the school have created a patio terrace outside, complete with lighting and a retractable canopy. All in all, it’s a perfect venue for atmospheric evening performances, and has already attracted the interest of clubs and organisations from outside the school.Patrick Taggart, the school’s Director of Operations, explains what a difference the seating has made. “Having high specification facilities really tells a story about what the school is about. We have students in there every day benefitting from the seating and the presentation equipment. We have also had a number of students decide to stay on for sixth form to study drama, who would not otherwise have done so.”There is also a massive operational and cost benefit. “Before, we used to have to set out and put away 250 plastic chairs every time we had a performance, which would take our site team one and a half hours. Opening this seating unit takes a minute and twenty seconds.”“The seating is first class, and the process from A to Z worked really really well – from the initial quote through to design, through to the installation and sign off. Audience Systems really listened to what we wanted, and that made a huge difference.” Specification Notes:The TX telescopic platform system is power operated, opening at the touch of a button. The chairs fold down automatically, and the side rails simply nest on the side of the seating unit when it’s closed – they do not have to be removed. This all adds up to the 1 minute 20 second turnaround time. The retractable platforms also include a ‘partial opening’ feature, which allows a smaller number of rows to be opened and locked safely into place. This gives the school even more flexibility – the first few rows can be opened to create more floor space or house a smaller group.Chairs specified for this project are Audience Systems’ ‘Accolade’ model, upholstered in three welcoming shades of blue. Wraparound plastic panels are fitted to the back of each chair to extend the life of the upholstery.

Life-Changing Equipment Provides Freedom & Independence

Guldmann Limited

The Aquatic Centre in the Northern Rockies Regional Recreation Centre has installed a ceiling lift system that enables wheelchair users to be independent when using the changing rooms.During the downtime in the COVID-19 lockdown, the people working at the Aquatic Centre decided to upgrade the changing room with a Guldmann GH3 ceiling lift solution. They knew that several of their visitors would benefit from this upgrade and they also knew of customers that were not able to use the facilities because they needed more assistance.Their vision was to make the Aquatic Centre accessible for a wider group of people, and they succeeded: When the Aquatic Centre re-opened to the public, the result was life-changing.On the first day, the crew had tipped a regular customer whom they thought would benefit from the ceiling lift to come swimming. The customer brought her support worker but ended up being able to do everything herself because she was able to use the new lift in the changing room.As she worked through getting ready to go for a swim, she used the lift to get herself out of her wheelchair and into the sling, changed herself, lowered herself into one of the aquatic chairs and got into the pool all on her own.She was then able to do it all over again when she was finished.Previously, a wheelchair user who wished to swim in the pool would have to hire helpers or ask family members to come with them and help transfer them from the wheelchair to the aquatic chair. Now, wheelchair users can come to the Aquatic Centre and be just as independent as the majority of the visitors.

The Globe Theatre, Stockton-on-Tees - Auditorium Seating

The Globe Theatre, Stockton-on-Tees - Auditorium Seating

Audience Systems Ltd

Stockton Globe theatre is a major live entertainment destination in the Northeast of England, with a capacity of up to 3000. However, this archetypal art deco theatre had stood empty since 1997, and for 20 years before that, been used as a bingo hall. As part of a huge overhaul of the whole building carried out by Stockton Borough Council, the auditorium was sympathetically refurbished. It is now a comfortable space which recaptures the ambience of the 1930s, while being a flexible and manageable space for operators Ambassador Theatre Group. Audience Systems worked with theatre consultant Chris Baldwin to create a two-part seating package. The seats on the balcony are based on our adaptable Icon chair. With just a few special design touches, the chair has been reimagined to provide an authentic 1930s feel, but with superb comfort. Bespoke elements include a timber rail above the seat upholstery, a full depth back, a soft close seat return, and a triple routed seat number recess inspired by the “O” in the Globe’s iconic logo. A few ticket holders will also enjoy the luxury of our specially designed beverage tables. In the stalls area, the challenges were operational. Some events in the auditorium will be all seated, some part-standing. So Audience Systems were given the brief of creating a removable seating layout that could be stored under the stage. We worked with the client to engineer a solution with removable seats stacking on low trolleys, which can be lowered to under-stage level on a hydraulic orchestra pit. The seats are based on our tool-free Matrix system, where tip-up seats are slotted into removable floor bars in groups. These floor bars normally need no fixings, but the stalls in the Globe have a sloping floor, so simple stud locators help the seats win the fight against gravity. Good brakes on the transportation trolleys are a must too! Our seats have a stunning backdrop with the whole of the auditorium beautifully restored, and a striking but authentic colour scheme. The venue will truly provide a unique experience for all who visit. The photographs on this page are by Sally Ann Norman.

Ferco Seating Systems Ltd

Scott Cinemas own & operate seven independent cinema sites throughout the South-West of the UK. Highly praised for bringing the big screen experience to coastal towns, they operate independent cinemas where the buildings sometimes have unique histories of their very own.The Scott Cinemas building in the port town of Exmouth was built in 1877 and it is believed motion pictures were originally shown here as early as 1910. This makes it one of the oldest cinemas in the UK. Having survived a bombing during World War Two the cinema was repurposed as an amusement arcade in 1979. Thankfully it was reopened as a cinema in 1987 and has remained in use ever since.During their temporary closure in 2020, Scott Cinemas chose to refurbish one of their three screening rooms in Exmouth. Ferco was selected as the perfect match for their seating requirements - which included both VIP and standard cinema chairs.Ferco's Paragon 755 is the most popular seat in the Paragon range and has been installed in cinemas across the world. Providing superior comfort and pleasing aesthetics, the 755 comes with a tip-up seat, silent tip-up mechanism and no finger traps. Far from being a 'standard' cinema seat, the Paragon 755 is everything that modern cinema-goers expect from their chair. For their VIP offering, the Premium Opus was selected. Ferco's market leading Opus Rocker is exceptionally comfortable with a generously cushioned headrest and a soft foam backrest and seat. The Opus gives a nod to the essence of Scandinavian furniture design with its modern, eye-catching design making a statement whilst compromising nothing on quality and ergonomic seating position.Since reopening its doors in May 2021 the Exmouth cinema has been well-used and the refurbished screen and seats have received very positive feedback. Director of Scott Cinemas, David Williams MBE clearly agrees with his customers saying “The premium seats at Exmouth Screen 2 are the most comfortable I have ever sat in”.That's another successful installation completed and showcasing that whether it is luxurious VIP cinema seats, or more standard cinema seats Ferco Seating has a product which will delight customers and owners alike.

Gerflor Flooring UK Limited

When Cardiff High school needed a high-quality multi-use sports flooring solution for their main hall, they chose international flooring specialist Gerflor to supply 700m2 of their world class Taraflex® Multi-Use vinyl sports floor. Gerflor also supplied an Isolsport underlay and their ubiquitous Taraflex® Bateco moveable protective covering which would ensure that the Taraflex® sports floor would remain protected during non-sporting activities. The contracting responsibility for the sports floor would be undertaken by Cardiff-based Floor Furnishings Limited. Nick Jefferies, Company Director, Floor Furnishings Ltd commented, “Gerflor’s Taraflex sports floor was extremely easy to lay. The Isolsport underlay also supplied by Gerflor, enabled us to lay the Taraflex Multi-Use directly over the existing concrete floor, this was a real benefit as the project was on a very tight schedule, due to the hall being required for exams.”The Taraflex® Multi-Use is a P1 category sports flooring, designed for both sport and non-sport use making it ideal for multi-purpose areas. Taraflex® Multi-Use protects users with excellent shock absorption and impact protection of 25% to 35%. The Fanfare Range supplied by Rawson carpets provided this, being solution dyed nylon and with BRE A+ environmental accreditation. Plus being fully supported as a UK manufacturer we were confident about meeting the deadline as the supply wouldn’t be an issue. Fanfare is a range that can be laid tessellated or broadloom, the result is a tile which offers the aesthetics of a seamless, monolithic floor. The sinuous look complements the space and offers great durability with castor chair resistance. The contract carpet tile is constructed using high grade solution dyed nylon and as such offers great cleaning results. Rawson values the Environment.
