Controlling Penetrating Water in Cavity Walls

Cavity Trays Ltd

A systematic approach of arresting and reducing the flow of water within a cavity wall prior to any change in status of that wall helps balance demands on damp protection measures. In the case of a circular window passing through a curved cavity wall, protecting against damp ingress is easily achieved using a preformed Type K cavitray. The preformed Cavitray is curved to match the wall. Conventional flat material or roll material cannot uniformly match the radius of a wall.

Level Threshold Approach has Problem Covered

Cavity Trays Ltd

The forming of a level threshold would be easy if the designer did not have to consider the prevention of damp ingress. The problem is a number of elements converge at a threshold, and when the threshold is required to be practically level, it can be difficult to bring together protective measures in a manner that promote integrated functionality and structural convenience. A different approach to forming level thresholds is offered by Cavity Trays Ltd. It literally and physically covers the problem. The Type LTT Level Threshold Tray is a three-dimensional preformed DPC that envelops opening masonry skins.

Telescopic stems easily adjust the height whilst the slab is in place, making installation fast and easy. Positioning lugs create uniform paving lines automatically. Heavy load tolerances and durability over time and large temperature ranges, up to Minus 40° C, gives Wallbarn ASPs the edge competitors.

Turnmills, Clerkenwell, EC1

FIS Products

In Clerkenwell, McLaren constructed a new office building with a basement to provide a total 97,000 sq ft of office space. McLaren utilized the existing basement structure which meant the exterior of the structure wasn't accessible. This meant that it was appropriate to use a cavity drain system. FIS worked closely with Henry Construction Projects and Veretec to provide a complete waterproofing service. Designing a system to fit around the existing structure was the challenge. FIS were able to advise on the correct installation process and provide regular quality control checks. Images courtesy of turnmillec1.co.uk.

London Square Orpington

Kingspan Insulation

To ensure these new homes both are energy efficient and warm, the project team sought to surpass the Building Regulations. This led to the specification of Kingspan Kooltherm K106 Cavity Board, which boasts a thermal conductivity of just 0.18 W/m.K across all available board thicknesses. In addition to its outstanding thermal performance, Kingspan Kooltherm K106 Cavity Board also features a water–tight, vapour–open polypropylene fleece outer facing which protects against moisture penetration. Protect your building against wind driven rain, a common source of moisture affecting buildings in the UK

SureCav Ltd

Damage from the build up of moisture results in mould, mildew and condensation on windows and in the loft space. Additionally, where there is a moisture problem in the wall cavity, damage readily occurs to the insulation and wall ties, affecting wall plates, the timber frame itself and installed joinery. Preventing this from occuring is obviously a priority in the minds of all designers and builders interested in quality construction. SureCav Provides the Solution. By building with the SureCav panels instead of a using a block leaf you are providing a barrier to protect from wind driven rain.

Using Cast Iron Imperial Air Bricks with Metric Ducting

Cast Iron Air Brick Company

Although we have cast iron slotted air bricks in metric sizes to perfectly engage with modern plastic ducting and periscopes, there may come a time when the installation requires imperial old patterned cast iron air bricks. Connecting these can be especially difficult which is why we've introduced these aluminium sleeves known as the metimp adapators (short for metric imperial). They are available in two sizes, single air brick size to connect up to a periscope duct and cavity wall sleeve or the double brick size for connecting to a larger wall sleeve

Great Suffolk Street, Southwark

Bulmer Brick Cutting

This refurbishment and extension of a Victorian warehouse used high quality, crafted materials to complement the existing Victorian building. Two elevations of a two-storey extension to the warehouse featured Victorian style tiles under each window. The designers were challenged to find a method for mechanically fixing these tiled panels which the SafeSecure® system achieved. Every tile is retained with hidden stainless steel sections within the panel. The panels were installed on rails which were ideal for the steel framed structure and allowed for thermal isolation and sufficient room for ventilation and insulation to the cavity void.
