The Challenge To install an attractive retaining wall solution that complements the beautiful landscaping. Richmond Care Village in Evesham comprises of a 60-bed care home for nursing and dementia care, 46 assisted living suites and 61 independent living apartments. The development is designed within the Richmond Care Villages model of luxury retirement accommodation and includes facilities such as a bar, restaurants, library, wellness spa with pool and gym all set in beautifully landscaped grounds. This luxury retirement village needed a retaining wall with considerable aesthetic appeal. The landscape design was carefully formulated to make a major commitment to the restoration and conservation of the landscape on the original Wood Norton estate. Groundworker R O’Donaghey was tasked with proposing a retention solution that could facilitate curves, corners, stepping down and railings. The project team had considered Gabion Baskets but decided that they would detract from the beautiful surrounding landscaping.

M&E contractor ‘The All Group’ designed 2.5km RAYCHEM of HWAT-M self-regulating cables in a single pipe hot water system throughout the hotel. Controlled by RAYCHEM HWAT-ECO smart controllers, the system provided the benefits of energy efficiency plus savings in material costs, labour and space. Pipe freeze protection was delivered using 5.5 km of RAYCHEM WinterGard, controlled with RAYCHEM RAYSTAT-ECO-10. Underfloor heating was installed in the bedrooms, using RAYCHEM T2Red with T2Reflecta. In addition, RAYCHEM T2Quicknet 160 was installed in the en-suite bathrooms and the hotel’s luxurious spa.

Country Court Care wanted to produce a purpose-built home that offers residents beautiful, homely accommodation, combined with first class care at an affordable price and Samantha Lord, Design Director at Samantha Lord Interior Design Ltd, was set the task of designing the interior finishes to meet this specification. The care home which consists of 66 en-suite bedrooms, a hair salon, a café/bistro, shop, cinema room, numerous lounges and communal areas required a flooring solution that would flow throughout the home and have performance characteristics that would withstand the demands of all their residents.

Ultrascapes’s Pro-bed HS, Pro-Prime and Flowpoint have been performing to the highest standard at Manchester’s £650 million development, MediaCityUK. Landscape paving contractor, English Landscapes, specified Ultrascape products for 40,000m² of paving at the high profile development. Over 2000 tonnes of Pro-Bed HS bedding mortar was supplied in bulk silos which provided a perfect base for the stone to be laid on. Pro-Prime slurry primer and the innovative Ultrascape Flowpoint flowable rapid setting grout were also used throughout the development. Flowpoint enables large areas to be grouted with this pourable material.

The ChallengeTramways is a 402-bedroomed new build student accommodation complex for Chester University. It comprises 356 en-suite cluster rooms and 56 en-suite studios incorporating communal kitchens and living rooms.The development was to be split into five blocks of accommodation, with each block between three and five storeys in height.The SolutionForterra’s Dark Multi Smooth and County Multi Smooth bricks were selected for the project’s facing brickwork. Used alongside zinc wall cladding, these red bricks helped to create interest and variety in the external appearance of each of the five blocks.Part of Forterra’s Butterley range of bricks they are both smooth, wirecut bricks. While County Multi Smooth is a fully red brick, Dark Multi Smooth introduces elements of blue.The BenefitsThe juxtaposition of the metallic cladding with the red and blue facing brickwork ensures the Tramways development offers its own, unique architectural interest while at the same time complementing the local built environment of this part of Chester.

Throughout its 600-year history it’s doubtful that Crossbasket Castle in Scotland catered for mobility compromised people – until a recent £9m investment and a Stannah Midilift SL platform lift transformed it into a luxury hotel, restaurant and events venue, accessible to everyone. Set in 14 acres of landscaped gardens on the banks of Rotten Calder Water in High Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Crossbasket Castle offers eight bedrooms, including a 4-floor honeymoon suite, the Albert and Michel Roux Jnr Restaurant, and the Roosevelt Grand Hall, a medieval-style, new-build banqueting/ballroom facility, and home to the Midilift SL access lift.

The nautical heritage of Aberdeen was the inspiration for Fresh Property Group's student accommodation development Caledon Court, designed using EGGER finishes throughout.U599 ST9 Indigo Blue, H3170 ST12 Natural Kendal Oak and U732 ST9 Dust Grey have been used in study bedrooms, studio apartments and shared living spaces. The neutral colour pallete brings the maritime world in and provides a calm, comfortable environment.Caledon Court is a 199 bed site next to Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.Designed by HLM Architects and fabricated by Welcome Furniture, students will find their desks, wardrobes, shelving, headboards, drawers, kitchen doors and worktops all feature EGGER laminates.Mhairi-Claire Wilkes of HLM Architects said, “The large variety of contemporary decors by EGGER enhanced our ability to design an exciting and unique space, all within a reasonable budget. The wide range of uses of the product allowed us to create a synergy between spaces and we were able to create a consistent aesthetic throughout.”

The £8m project involved the demolition of an existing derelict 120-bed nursing home on Pevensey Bay Road in Eastbourne and the development of a new 80-bed care home for a Barchester Healthcare Mortain Place Care Home – which has been specifically designed to provide high-quality residential care to older people.

Foxley Lane is a redevelopment of a former residential care home on a prominent corner plot west of Purley town centre in a prime position on one of West Purley’s premier roads. This development comprises of a five-storey building with fifty-seven exquisite one, two and three bed apartments located within a mile of Purley mainline station. All with parking and a private balcony or patio, it also features white rendered façades and prominent gabled elevations, significantly enhancing the Foxley Lane street scene.Cellecta’s Mojave S2-8 was specified by OB Architecture as it offers a dry and robust floor build up from one source. Mojave S2-8 is a high-performance underfloor heating system which performs at a low flow temperature. XFLO-FF boards are manufactured to suit the pipe diameter and spacing required to achieve the desired thermal output.HQ Homes were awarded this 530m² contract to construct this redevelopment.

Combining contemporary aesthetics with exceptional performance, an array of solutions from Forbo Flooring Systems' portfolio have been installed throughout the state-of-the-art Cancer Centre at Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH). Designed by Ryder Architecture, the facility brings patient experience to the fore, where the integrated flooring scheme seamlessly guides users through the building. The prestigious project took home the winner's accolade in the 2020/21 annual Fly Forbo competition. An extension of the main hospital, the Cancer Centre at MKUH brings together all of the cancer services under one roof, which were previously provided from three separate locations on the hospital site. Split over two floors the £15 million dedicated to the facility offers a 24-bed inpatient ward, outpatient consultation rooms, procedure and specialist treatment rooms, a chemotherapy suite, alongside a wellbeing support service.

At the heart of one of the largest centres of health science and medical research in the world, the £140 million Papworth Hospital in Cambridge has seen the application of a comprehensive range of waterproofing solutions from Sika, ensuring this landmark hospital has a watertight and healthy future.Located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the 300 bed hospital replaced the existing Papworth Hospital and was built by Skanska for the Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The specialised cardiothoracic hospital will features 7 state-of-the-art theatres, a 46 bed critical care area including Cardiac Recovery Unit and Cardiac High Dependency Unit, diagnostic and treatment facilities and a 24 bed day ward.

We supplied 24,000m2 screed binder to our Smet Supported Partner, Fast Floor Screed Ltd. The industry experts pump-applied Südanit 280 Alpha Hemihydrate Screed using their fleet of Mobile Screed Factories in the new hospital complex, The National Forensic Mental Health Service (NFMHS) in Portrane. We supplied 20,000 m2 Rapidur® B5 Rapid Drying Floor Screed which was laid by industry experts, B Doherty Screeding Mobile Screed Factory).The NFMHS is a new state-of-the-art facility located 22 km from Dublin City in Portrane, North County Dublin. The project was awarded by Health Service Executive to the Joint Venture formed by OHL (50%) and OHL’s local delivery partner JJ Rhatigan (50%).The project, which commenced works on site in 2017, comprises the construction of a forensic mental health hospital, as part of St. Ita’s Hospital complex. It covers a floor area of 24,000 m2, not including the energy, maintenance, and gardening buildings. The new hospital will accommodate 170 patient beds, distributed as follows: National Forensic Hospital: 120 beds; Mental Health Unit for Children and Adolescents: 10 beds; Intellectual Disability and Mental Health Unit: 10 beds; and the Intensive Care Rehabilitation Unit: 30 beds. The construction project also includes the execution of spaces related to energy production systems, maintenance, and horticulture.

Radbrook VillageShrewsburyCemfloor was the screed of choice for Radbrook Village, a mix of 3 and 4 bedroom homes along with 1 and 2 bedroom apartments in the magnificent refurbished Radbrook Hall.Floreat Homes were the developers of this project, which was contracted to SJ Roberts Construction, while the screed was installed by Ryflow Liquid Screeds.Cemfloor provided the ideal solution for the screeds on thisdevelopment. The speed of installation and the fact that floors can be walked on after a day provided the least disruption to other trades and the rapid drying avoided concerns re installation of floor finishes. The benefits to the efficiency of the underfloor heating were also attractive to the project. Cemfloor’s compatibility with underfloor heating, which has grown in popularity in recent years, and the ability to be laid at 50mm gave the builder scope with thickness of insulation and floor finishes. The screed totally encapsulated the underfloor heating pipework and eliminated air voids which ensured optimal heat transfer from the heating pipework to the screed surface.With the advent of flowing screeds, as well as the traditional sand and cement screeds, there is great choice in the market to find a product that suits your needs when it comes to durability, time management and installation.

Originally built in 1986, Dukes Court has formed part of a £77 million regeneration scheme in Woking, Surrey. The redevelopment included new signage and pedestrian routes, updated office space, a new restaurant and a living ‘green’ wall - aimed to improve air quality. Outside of Dukes Court a new pedestrianised public space was designed and required the creation of large wavey planting beds all in corten to sit either side of the entrance to the building. The planter had to adapt to the stairways, slopes and columns present in the final design, adding a lot of complexity to the required planter wall geometry.Our latest solution, AKRI steel retaining planters were best suited for this as they are flexible enough to allow for varying levels and can be manufactured in the desired style of corten to harmonise with the existing building facade. The AKRI planters were then welded on top with a return, to create an attractive wave look. The finished scheme has created a pleasant, open space for tenants and members of the public to enjoy.

Constructed within the Mossley Hill Conservation Area, the parkland surrounding the University of Liverpool's Greenbank student residences was gifted to the university by the Rathbone family in 1939, and still offers a unique environment today. Crucially the designs for new buildings, including use of Technal's aluminium building systems respond sympathetically to the verdant setting. The Greenbank Residences replace outdated buildings and have been arranged around three landscaped courtyards, rising from five to eight storeys in height, creating over 1,370 new en-suite bedrooms. This project utilised 2,000 m2 of aluminium curtain walling, windows and doors - all of which offer high thermal performance and are finished in matt Anthracite Grey polyester powder coat.

The Courtyards is an extra care housing scheme in Preston designed by Levitt Bernstein Architects, for Community Gateway Association, a community-led organisation that empowers residents and local people to shape its services and improve their homes. 60 apartments, split into 40 two-bed and 20 one-bed homes, are arranged around two landscaped courtyards and set within existing mature trees, affording all residents a strong connection to nature. A striking black barn sits between the courtyards and features PREFA Rhomboids in P.10 Black colour.

This project employed the BS 7533-101 Type A method of construction (rigid/bound paving over an unbound roadbase) with the use of Steintec's tuffflow permeable paving mortar as part of this SuDS scheme.The Steintec tuffflow system of permeable bedding and jointing mortars was used to construct a SuDS permeable, bound/rigid pavement. The system allows the designer to capitlize on the low maintenance, high durability of a BS structurally compliant bound/rigid public realm pavement, while avoiding the disadvantages of loose bedding and jointing aggregates used in conventional SuDS pavement construction.

Market Quarter Rugby is a new residential scheme, providing 360 apartments for private rental. The development comprises a mix of 175 one-bed and 185-two bed apartments, across four blocks, which benefit from their proximity to the local train station and local town centre. The scheme completes the regeneration of the former Cattle Market site which has stood derelict since its closure in 2008.The Firechief Kitchen Stove Guard was chosen to be installed as standard in all 360 apartment kitchens as a more cost-effective solution to a fire suppression system.

Perfect for students that study in London as it’s a short tube ride to all the major Universities. The New accommodation is also not far from the famous sites in London such as The Tower of London and The Shard.THE PROJECTThe Student development building was 9-storeys tall with 250 of student bed spaces including a mix of studios and en suites and offers affordable, stylish, and accessible accommodation in the heart of London whilst being a safe environment for students to learn, and grow and live.THE PRODUCTCRM wanted a mail and parcel solution to help with the overbearing parcel deliveries that they were receiving in their other buildings. After discussing with The Safety Letterbox Company the requirements and where the products were going to be placed, they had a myRENZbox modula intelligent parcelbox installed and a bank of freestanding COM2 mailboxes.The intelligent parcel boxes are also freestanding and situated in front of the COM 2 mailboxes. There are also two sizes of the COM2 mailbox to maximise efficiency and space. The whole mail and parcel area looks stylish, and efficiently and most of all will futureproof their mail and parcel delivery.

Shard Place is a 26 story residential development housing 176 apartments from studios to three bedrooms and the third building in Renzo Piano’s Shard Quarter. Situated between St. Thomas Street and London Bridge Street and adjacent to The Shard, Shard Place was previously Fielden House before demolition. Shard Place is one of London’s most central and connected residences, a 28-minute train ride from Gatwick international airport and a short stroll to London’s South Bank. It encompasses five-star amenities, including a rooftop pool, fitness suite, cinema room and private roof garden.Cellecta’s HiDECK Structural 28 was specified by Renzo Piano Building Workshop due to to it being a conductive structural floorboard and having outstanding acoustic and fire performance and low thermal resistance.Mace was awarded this 12,000m² contract for this development in London.

Redland Court is an exceptional landmark development of the former Redland High School, which was transformed into a collection of architecturally unique buildings to create 44 new 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments located in Bristol. Also, an exquisite duplex and townhouse over two floors with an open plan living area, additional mezzanine living space and roof terrace. This enables all mail for residents to be sorted and allocated into individual secure mailboxes, providing them with a unique mailing address.Our team worked closely with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill architects and Emaar properties, to produce a visually impressive and secure bespoke arrangement of 28 banks of 50 mailboxes for three purpose designed mailrooms in the impressive skyscraper.

Goodluck Hope sits in an enviable position on the banks of the river Thames, directly opposite the 02 Arena. This flagship project from the Irish developer, Ballymore, is a prime example of stunning contemporary design with an industrial edge. Using a mix of blue and green façades, interiors feature bright, colour palettes interspersed with splashes of polished brass in both the kitchens and bathrooms.Towelrads have worked with the M&E subcontractor, Borough Engineering, on every phase of the waterside development and supplied Multicolumn radiators, along with chrome and white towel rails, to the private and shared units. This unique island development features an eclectic mix of contemporary buildings including suites, 1,2-, and 3-bedroom apartments, lofts and townhouses. With so many different plot types, most sizes throughout the project have been made to order with vertical and low-level radiators supplied, some up to 1.6m long.

Stow House is a boutique bed and breakfast set in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. They had the Topseal waterproofing roofing system installed and a sedum roof to finish the new extension.

Reflections is a complex of luxury waterside apartments, built in a contemporary style, most living areas look over Bournemouth Bay and Southbourne Overcliff Drive. The complex features four 3 bed and five 2 bed apartments.Cellecta’s YELOfon HD10+ was specified by Harlequin Homes due to the system being lightweight, easy to install, and delivers unrivalled acoustic performance when used to isolate a floating screed from a structural concrete floor. YELOfon HD10+ is an acclaimed resilient layer system that carries 3 proprietary Robust Details: E-FC-5, 17 & 18.Glossbrook was awarded this 400m² contract to construct this development in Bournemouth.

This project combines SuDS bound permeable paving with the most up to date methods of construction in BS 7533-101 and a variety of build-ups over varying substrates including structural concrete, permeable concrete, made up ground and attenuation crates.The Steintec tuffflow system of permeable bedding and jointing mortars was used to construct a SuDS permeable, bound/rigid pavement. Ultrascape's BS 7533 compliant mortar paving system has been used to deliver a modern and stylish forecourt outside Swindon railway station. The redevelopment has transformed what was previously a heavy traffic dominated area, into a prestigious pedestrian focused arrival space which features seating, planting, lighting and a millennium clock. Work was carried out by specialist civil engineering contractor, Britannia Construction and included the installation of 500 tonnes of high quality natural granite and Pennant Sandstone using Ultrascape's Pro-Bed HS fine bedding concrete, Flowpoint rapid setting grout and Pro-Prime slurry primer.

Wisteria Lodge is a collection of 6 well-appointed apartments, some with a balcony or alternatively private garden, situated in a convenient central location close to Broadstone’s shops and amenities in the popular Ridgeway. Ballards Rise is home to a development of eight flats (seven 1 bed & one 2 bed) across two interlinked purpose-built blocks. The front block comprises six flats over three floors with two further flats to the rear block over two storeys. This development has regular transport links into central London.Cellecta’s DECKfon 26T was specified by OB Architecture due to it being the ideal acoustic overlay treatment to improve the performance of the original structural timber decked floor. The tongue and groove on the floorboard make it quick and easy to install, saving time and money.Excel Construction were supplied 587m² of Cellecta products for this development in South Croydon.

Using our Cedral Thrutone Smooth fibre cement slates, in our unique Stone Green colour, this 2-bed terrace house in Dundrum maximised light, space & views while maintaining privacy. 

Ronafix polymer admixture was used in two different applications during recent refurbishment work at the Barbican Centre. The admixture was used to create a high strength levelling screed and also a water resistant bedding mortar.

The high performance weberend MT multi-coat render system has been applied as the exterior finish on the new-build Woodward Close, a pioneering 60-bed dementia care home in Winnersh, Berkshire.
