Venesta Washroom Systems Ltd

Raising the bar of commercial space in the city centre, the new 77,000 sq. ft. of prestigious office space required a premium washroom shower cubicle solution.Unity Full Height shower cubicles were specified in the basement shower area of Dublin Landings. With minimal floor and ceiling clearances and flush fronts, Unity Full Height ensures maximum privacy for end users.A sturdy, waterproof and easy to maintain material was required for the 19 new shower cubicles, so Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) was specified. Also impact, scratch and heat resistant, SGL is an ideal choice for busy washroom facilities such as these at Dublin Landings. To complement the modern décor of the room, our popular light grey laminate ‘Cloud’ was selected for the full height shower cubicles, creating a bright, fresh and calm environment.Unity’s stainless steel and satin anodised aluminium hardware is durable and corrosion resistant, ideal for commercial shower areas. Some of the cubicles' rise and fall butt hinges were set to fall open, allowing office staff to easily identify vacant shower cubicles.Read the full case study for more details.

The hospital opened in 2006, replacing Walsgrave Hospital the original hospital at the site.Twinfix was approached by Principal Contractors William Gough to design, manufacture and install a walkway from the helipad on the first-floor deck to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency department. This impressive canopy design included lockable double leaf gates to secure the area. The roof comprises of our Multi-Link-Panel Non-Fragile (NF) system powder coated to RAL 5010 – gentian blue and glazed with 16mm multiwall polycarbonate, and the vertical panels were powder-coated to RAL 7037 – dusty grey. As this metal does not rust in use, the walkway will keep its good looks throughout its long life.

Hotel Café Royal

CDM Stravitec

Hotel Café Royal has just undergone a complete refurbishment and internal re-build. Part of the new complex is a state-of-the-art Spa and Gym which is located in the basement. Directly next to the hotel is Regent Street, below which runs the Bakerloo underground train line.Structure-borne noise levels from the trains were far too high to create the relaxing environment required for a top class Spa. Tew Farmhouse & Barns

The Rooflight Co.

Tew Farmhouse and Barns, Oxfordshire was a conversion of a Grade II listed farmhouse into six luxury holiday lets.Working to the client's brief, the Architectural Designers at Charlie Luxton Design scoped out the design of the luxury accommodation to achieve a high-quality finish whilst retaining the idyllic barn-like character. The rooflights needed to align with the design concept externally, integrating seamlessly with the zinc roof, whilst contributing to the airy and light interior design. Neo Rooflights were selected for their frameless interior and edge-to-edge glazing technology to maximise the viewable space and flood the top floor rooms with natural daylight. The technical design team at The Rooflight Co helped to marry vision to solution by creating a bespoke baseplate that provided the level of detail required to ensure the rooflights work alongside the roof, not simply sit within in. The technical team also advised egress Neo Rooflights to provide a means of suitable fire escape access and ensure the buildings conformed with building regulations. The Neo Rooflight demonstrated its suitability to be used within the Grade II listed farmyard within the context of it originally being a historic non-domesticated building. The rooflights were not only practical within the design, but the appearance was in keeping with the aesthetics of the times.

Clement Windows Group

Over a number of phases, Clement have manufactured and installed new steel windows and doors from our EB24 range for this magnificent house in the Berkshire countryside. The original home was built in 1905 and the current owners have beautifully refurbished the whole property including the gardens. They have cleverly added a contemporary twist, but have retained all of their home’s original charm. The new slim framed steel windows and doors have opened up the views from the house to the garden and let masses of light into the home. Two different glass types were chosen: leaded light glass for the new multi point locking steel windows and G+ glass for the steel doors, and the combination works perfectly together. The larger panes of glass in the steel doors allow natural light to flow throughout the ground floor. The client said: “Clement Windows Group are a fantastic company. They have worked at my property now for the last couple of years, as the work has been carried out in phases. Throughout the whole process I have been impressed with their professional service. We are really happy with the quality of all our new windows and doors and would not hesitate to use Clement again in the future.”

Deaconess Hospital Mannheim

Deaconess Hospital Mannheim

Trespa UK Ltd

Combining hygiene, function, ergonomics and visual appeal: a new operating unit shows the wayLocated in the northern part of Baden-Württemberg – the federal state closest to France and Switzerland – Diako Mannheim is one of the major hospitals in this area of Germany. It was founded in 1861 as the ‘Evangelischer Verein für Krankenpflege durch Diakonissen’. Meanwhile, the deaconesses are long gone and the eventful history of the institution – which even includes a temporary relocation in repurposed barracks – has given way to a healthcare facility that caters to 18,000 inpatients and carries out over 12,000 surgical procedures per year.As early as 2012, it had become clear that, as far as the operating theatres were concerned, there was ample room for improvement. The theatres were located wide apart on two different floors, while ancillary areas were in short supply and impractical. As a result, the hospital incurred additional expenses and a variety of inconveniences. To solve these issues once and for all, an ambitious project was initiated: the two operating theatres would be relocated next to each other and complemented by three additional, state-of-the-art theatres. The concept called for a brand new extension: the building permit was requested in October 2017, and the new operating unit was inaugurated in September 2021.

DeltaWing used for screening balconies at social housing project

DeltaWing used for screening balconies at social housing project

Lang+Fulton

Emmett Russell Architects has designed social housing on several infill sites on the Northern fringes of Bristol to Passivhaus standard, achieving thermal comfort solely by post-heating or post-cooling of the fresh air mass. The projects address the demand for smaller housing units. The key architectural challenge was to make efficient use of tight site limitations without overlooking neighbouring properties. The metal screened balconies allow light into the first floor flats whilst minimising views into adjacent gardens. The balcony screens step down at the sides to open up and allow longer oblique views.DeltaWing-70 was chosen to fulfil this requirement. The louvred panels were inverted to provide a privacy screen which combined the maximum screening effect in a downwards direction with minimum restriction of natural daylight.Lang+Fulton also supplied panels of PL-66×11/30×2 to form a heel-proof decking for the balconies. In addition, DeltaWing-100 was used to create secure, visually obscured storage for two bikes at each property which was integrated within the entrance canopies. Some of the properties had 2000mm wide stores with double doors, others were 900mm wide with single swing doors for vertically hung bikes.

Hempel intumescent saves bar after three hour blaze

Hempel A/S

Raiz cocktail bar is a trendy nightspot in the centre of Ponta Delgada, the bustling capital of the Azores. A busy venue, popular with locals and tourists alike, Raiz bar is a modern, industrial design, featuring exposed steel beams and glass walls with steel staircases connecting two floors. It was important to the owner, Gabriel, that as a main feature of the building design, the steelwork was not only protected against corrosion and fire, but also looked good, to enhance the ambience of the bar.One night, soon after closing, a fire took hold. The fire raged through Raiz bar destroying many fixtures and fittings and causing a substantial amount of damage. Initially it was thought the cause was from an electrical short-circuit, but having been ruled out it is now being investigated as a deliberate, criminal act. The fire burned for three hours before being brought under control and finally extinguished by the fire crews. Being outside of opening hours, the building was empty and fortunately no one was hurt.As the damage was assessed, it became apparent that the steel structure remained intact. Gabriel’s choice of Hempel’s intumescent coatings not only protected the steel against the heat and flames, but allowed additional time for the Fire Department to bring the fire under control.

External Goods Lift

External Goods Lift

Penny Hydraulics Ltd

It can be difficult to find a lift that will operate outside without providing complete shelter from the elements. Full enclosures can have a significant impact on the building appearance and there may also be space constraints in lightwell situations. Penny Hydraulics Ltd uses design automation to quickly produce layouts based on its modular lift systems that can be adapted for external installation. The company has been manufacturing lifts in the UK for over 30 years and so has much experience to help find solutions that it knows will work well for the end user. Blueprint Studios in Manchester were experiencing problems moving audio equipment up to the first floor recording studio safely. It would have been very costly to fit internally both in terms of cost and space so a Penny Hydraulics MezzLift was installed externally within a minimal black frame and polycarbonate clad shaft to satisfy Listed Buildings consent. This saved considerable building works whilst enabling the Studios to become safer and more efficient. If the change in level is below 1.5 metres then a Loading Bay Lift could have been used that has much less impact over a more traditional style lift.

This exceptional building now aims to become a hub for practical expertise in everything to do with wood and the environment, hosting a variety of day and residential courses in the unique environment of The Steading.Fire and security service providers, Safe Services, installed the Advanced Go fire alarm panel in The Steading and were involved from the design stage though to installation and commissioning. The Advanced Go panel is integrated with EMS Firecell radio equipment for a complete cable-free fire system – which was an essential requirement to preserve and protect the unique interior of the building.

AGC Glass UK Ltd

Welcome to 120 Moorgate, a grade A office in the City of London. 3,000m2 of AGC ipasol Neutral 70/37 solar control double-glazing units and matching spandrel glazing was chosen for the facade of this extensive refurbishment project completed in 2020.In order to meet the demands of today's contemporary workspaces, a new facade was needed in order to improve the energy and acoustic comfort for occupants. With seven floors of full-height glazing, the ipasol Neutral 70/37 double glazing specification allows for the highest level of daylight and connection with the outside environment whilst protecting against overheating thanks to its solar gain reduction properties (g-value of 0.37). The fastest growing use of energy in buildings is for cooling, so harnessing existing technologies such as solar control glass can contribute to a sustainable building strategy.A low U-value of 1.0W/m².K was also a given, in view of the facade's thermal insulation requirements. Laminated glass was also incorporated in the specification of the double-glazing units as an acoustic enhancement to help protect against nuisance noise and also as a safety measure since the full-height glazing is accessible from interior spaces.Design work by Darling Associates and installation undertaken by specialist facade contractor Anglian Architectural.120 Moorgate is rated BREEAM Very Good.

Cyclehoop doubles cycle parking provision at leading NHS Trust

Cyclehoop doubles cycle parking provision at leading NHS Trust

Cyclehoop

Earlier this year we were extremely proud to transform the cycle parking provision for employees and visitors at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London.Guy’s and St Thomas’ is one of the largest NHS trusts in England and they are true pioneers in health research with upwards of 500 studies currently running. The trust is renowned for high-quality teaching and education and manages community services across London.Cyclehoop worked in collaboration with TfL to radically update the parking provision for cyclists at the hospital, with the installation of 36 Jan Kuipers Two Tier Bike Racks. Cyclehoop is the official UK supplier of these Dutch Two Tier Racks. This particular product is ideal for areas tight on space as the tiered system means that less floor space is taken up in comparison to traditional racks. This renders the Two Tier the smart option for maximising cycle parking in confined spaces. The racks and the entire project received positive feedback. Sustainability Officer for the trust, Teresa Agudo, was very pleased with the delivery of the project, commenting:“Cyclehoop provided excellent customer service and were very flexible in terms of installation date. The design is really good too.”“Before this installation, there was limited parking facilities for visitors so this makes a huge impact as we have doubled cycle parking space.”

Part L Thermal Standard & Future Home Standard

Lignacite Ltd

Improvements to the energy efficiency of buildings were published in 2021 with guidance on compliance provided by the following Approved Documents: Approved Document L – Volume 1: Dwellings Approved Document L – Volume 2: Buildings other than dwellingsThis Design Guide provides a commentary on the new changes and includes compliant wall and floor solutions using products from Lignacite Limited. These changes to the Building Regulations are intended to help the UK deliver net zero. This includes a requirement for new homes to produce around 30% less CO2 than current standards and a 27% reduction in emissions from other new buildings. To deliver the improvements, new homes will be assessed against the following four performance metrics.Primary energyCarbon dioxide emissionsThe fabric energy efficiency standard (FEES)Minimum standards for fabric and fixed buildingservicesWith increasing amounts of renewable energy generation, fuel factors are no longer required to offset ‘dirty’ electricity generation. This will adversely impact any property using oil, LPG or solid mineral fuel. This will prove to be a challenge to homes that are off-grid. More widely, it will help to drive the uptake of heat pumps which is a crucial part of the government’s long-term strategy. The new changes take effect from the 15th June 2022.
