Installed as part of a £3m project to replace their ROSLA block, a monopitch TRITON Covered Walkway ensures the staff and students of Nunnery Wood High School are protected from the elements when moving between buildings. With a large number of buildings around the school site, one of the main thoroughfares runs in between two blocks, and during wet weather other areas became congested as site users avoided it. In association with the school’s consultant, PR Associates, Streetspace developed a solution using our TRITON Covered Walkway design. The steel frame canopy construction enables flexibility in post spacings, which is perfect in situations like this where multiple doorways open onto the canopy area. Multiwall polycarbonate roof cladding with a good level of light transmission ensures that classrooms adjacent to the covered walkway do not lose too much light.

Allscott Meads Primary School

Tobermore

Officially opened in September 2023, Allscott Meads Primary School is primed to become a community hub for the residents of the Telford area.Built on the former Sugar Beet factory site, the new school has capacity for 150 students aged 3-11 and comprises 6 classrooms, a sports hall, kitchen, staff room, storage rooms, offices for 1-1 teaching support and interviews. The grounds of the school also contain an impressive 1.1 acre sports field and hard-surfaced sports court, as well as 40 bike spaces and car parking for staff and visitors. Tegula and Tegula Duo Block Paving were used to create a warm, inviting feel to the external landscaping on this project.  The ChallengeAesthetically pleasing paving options were required to establish a welcoming entrance to the Telford community hub.Following the deterioration of the Sugar Beet Factory that once stood on the site, the vision for Allscott Meads was to create a modern school in a beautiful setting, that would become a hub at the heart of the community. To reach a wide demographic, creating an inviting space was imperative and the use of warm tones were requested for the paving. A retaining wall solution for a small area to one side of the building was necessary to optimise space for parking in a manner that would elevate aesthetic appeal. The SolutionHydropave Tegula Cedar and Bracken were used to compliment the modern building. To create a space where students could flourish and thrive, it was important for the area to feel modern but welcoming. Hydropave Tegula 240 and Hydropave Tegula Duo Block Paving in the homely colours of Cedar and Bracken were ideal products to realise a traditional, warm feel.To reduce flooding and remove harmful pollutants, a sustainable drainage system was implemented through use of Tobermore’s Hydropave products. All walkways and car parking areas were paved, with delineation added so that specific areas were clearly visible. Secura Grand facilitated a seamless, tiered retaining wall solution that enabled additional parking to be added to the grounds, simultaneously increasing aesthetic appeal.

NBB Outdoors

The Coombes CE Primary School engaged NBB Outdoors with a specific project brief aimed at improving the functionality and aesthetics of their school grounds. The primary project objectives were as follows:  Sheltered Pathway: The school required a sheltered outdoor area covering 16 meters of an internal corner of the building. Serving multiple entrances, they wanted to ensure that students, staff, and visitors could move safely and comfortably, regardless of the weather. Integration: It was of equal importance that the new shelter seamlessly integrated with both the school’s brand and uniform, matching the rich blue primary colour and incorporating the school logo onto the shelter. Year-Round Protection: The shelter needed to provide year-round protection from all weather conditions, ensuring that the covered pathway remained dry, safe, and functional. Diverse Installation: The project site included both concrete steps and tarmac, necessitating a combination of mounting variations to ensure secure installation.  To meet The Coombes CE Primary School’s unique requirements, NBB Outdoors designed and implemented a bespoke L-Shaped shelter solution, offering a range of tailored features: Full-Length Panelling: Clear polycarbonate glazing was affixed to the shelter, providing year-round protection from all weather conditions, making the sheltered pathways functional throughout the year. This feature ensured that students, staff, and visitors could move safely and comfortably, irrespective of the elements. Branding Integration: The school logo was prominently printed on six panels of the shelter, showcasing the school’s identity and creating a sense of pride among students and staff. Further, the shelter was gloss finished in Blue RAL 5002, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the premises. Considered Installation: To accommodate both tarmac and concrete surfaces, seven shelter posts were surface-bolted, while four were sub-surfaced, ensuring the shelter’s stability and security.  As a further benefit, the resulting shelter received NBB Outdoors’ industry-leading Triplex anti-corrosion finish, providing exceptional resistance to corrosion and environmental challenges. This finish guaranteed the shelter’s durability for 25 years. By aligning the design with the school’s brand, integrating the logo, and ensuring year-round functionality, NBB Outdoors has not only met but exceeded the school’s expectations.

Houlton School

Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC

In Rugby, 57 aerial masts and a radio station are the genesis for the beginning of a new town, centred around the recently finished Houlton School. The carefully considered design of the School by Van Heyningen & Haward (VHH), is the successful retrofit of a collection of historic, grade 2 listed radio station buildings. Its cost-effective evolution into a thriving, sustainable secondary school comes through the careful integration of the previous buildings and by choosing to use products that fitted soundly within the pre-existing vernacular.Adapting the original framework to today’s standards was a job that took years to come to fruition, careful application of steel frame and the restoration of the original brickwork has meant that the two main listed structures, Transmission Hall and Power Hall will become a place of learning for generations of students. Handmade clay bricks provided by Michelmersh were vital to the restoration of the project, where they were used to ensure the structures could be repaired and retained rather than rebuilt from the ground up.Throughout the project, various elements of the building's industrial past have been retained, with arched windows and high ceilings to ensure that the history of this nearly century-old building is revered, but not overpowering compared to its newly instated modern sensibilities.Houlton School recently won the Refurbishment Category at the BDA Brick Awards.

Schöck Ltd

A high-profile project, involving the unique new Sconnex® type W thermally insulating wall connection, is Haberdashers’ Boys’ School, just north of London.   It is one of the UK’s leading independent boys' schools and sets exemplary standards, in both educational terms and in its facilities as well.  Demonstrated by the new reinforced concrete extension to the Preparatory School, where cube_design architects were commissioned to produce a design for three additional classrooms and relocated changing facilities.  Jane Lock-Smith, the founder of cube_design and RIBA Client Design Advisor within the Building Schools for the Future programme, observes: “The design is respectful to the style of the existing building, but offers a contemporary twist through the use of full height glazing and charred timber cladding. A colonnade also minimises the buildings footprint.  Our detailing took into account that around 40% of all thermal bridges in a building are caused by walls and supports.  The Schöck product offers an application-friendly, high-quality solution that contributes to a permanently sustainable building concept”.   The outstanding insulation performance is combined with an excellent load bearing capacity, which transmits very high pressure, tensile and shear forces, both in the longitudinal and transverse direction. The ultra-high performance pressure buffer achieves compressive strength levels in excess of 175 N/mm2. Sconnex® type W also achieves a significant cost reduction when compared with the installation of insulation beneath the floor slab.

Simon Balle School were fully committed to investing in these new modern toilet blocks which future-proofed them for generations to come. They also did not want to wait until the next summer holidays to complete the work. The SolutionBrookhouseUK, having created a strict methodology for term time work, were able to refurbish both washrooms during term-time. We created a design which included demolishing the central dividing wall and installing new half-height partition walls using timber studs and hygiene wall cladding. Two new modern solid surface wash troughs sat on each side of the new walls which included automatic taps and automatic soap dispensers, vastly improving the facilities. A team of eight from specialist sub-contractor SAM Drylining installed the Zentia canopies and ceiling tiles.SAM Drylining contracts manager Ian Bartlett said: “This was a large extension to a comprehensive school and consisted of several different ceiling make-ups, including Zentia’s Knife Edge canopies, all floating in different areas with no ceilings above, and then several thousand metres of Zentia Lay-In grid."“The programme was a challenging one but was co-ordinated closely with all other subcontractors on site. If alterations to sequence or design were required Zentia’s technical team attended to site to discuss and were able to agree changes at site level, making the installation as painless as you’d expect.”

Heathlands School

Heathlands School

James Hardie Building Products Ltd

Heathlands School is the largest deaf school within the UK offering a Total Communication approach to education incorporating British Sign Language, Sign Supported English and spoken English. The school needed more classroom space so they commissioned architects Manalo & White (in collaboration with deaf architect Richard Dougherty) and building contractor Gemstone, to create a new dedicated classroom building on the same site as the existing school building. The School wanted to improve the provision of classrooms but it was already a tight site so the designers carried out an initial master-planning exercise to identify potential opportunities. They chose to create a new timber-framed building rather than extending the existing school building, and the architects connected the new structure to the existing building via a first-floor level bridge.Originally the site was built as a Primary School and had been adapted to make it suitable for a deaf school. This new building was purpose built for the requirements of the pupils with 6 bright, open classrooms with generous windows and a state-of-the-art heating, cooling and ventilation system. All of the circulation is exterior so there are no internal corridors. By positioning the new building in the corner of the campus it made use of otherwise under-utilised space and created a new additional outdoor learning area for the students which could be accessed directly from the ground floor classrooms. The new building mirrored the scale of the existing buildings so that it immediately felt like a comfortable addition. The architects didn’t want to design another brick building and instead deliberately chose to clad the exterior, creating a new identity for the building. The architects specified Alexandrite Green for the cladding to symbolise nature, health, and harmony, with yellow windows to represent light and ‘thriving in unison. Yellow also helps with perception and helped the students to move easily around the spaces. Initially Gemstone spoke with a number of cladding manufacturers about producing the coloured panels for the project, but it was James Hardie who were able to colour match the panels in custom colour Alexandrite Green with a professional service. Hardie® Panel can be produced in any colour within the RAL colour system, providing plenty of options for every project. They are available in a range of textures, offering the ultimate design flexibility. Gemstone chose to use Hardie® Panel in smooth for the 240m2 envelope of the building.  Because the project was on a live school site Gemstone had to be sensitive to disruption and pupil access. Deliveries were scheduled for early morning and late afternoon to avoid pick up and drop off hours. The site was cordoned off from the rest of the school during construction to ensure minimal interruption to the pupils and teachers. All of the panels were designed individually and fabricated off site by Marco Industries to minimise drilling and cutting on site. Not only did this help with health and safety on the school campus but it also sped up the installation process. The project was completed on time, to a very tight budget, and the client was very happy with the delivery.
