Falco Installs Over 90 Secure Cycle Parking Spaces for Candleriggs Square in Glasgow – a New £300 Million Transformation of one of the City’s Most Prominent Development Sites

Falco UK Ltd

This month, Falco supplied and installed over 90 spaces of the FalcoLevel-Eco two-tier cycle rack, for what will become Scotland’s largest hotel, located on Drum’s Candlerigg’s Square site in the heart of Glasgow’s historic Merchant City. The new £300m development, will transform Glasgow’s original flourishing fruit and vegetable market which has lay neglected and unused for 20 years, becoming a derelict site in an otherwise vibrant and thriving neighbourhood. Candleriggs Square, bound by Wilson Street, Hutcheson Street, Candleriggs and Trongate is regarded as the last and most significant piece of the Merchant City regeneration jigsaw and will provide a vibrant mixed-use community bringing together new homes, offices, hotels and local amenities. As part of the state-of-the-art development, a requirement for secure, easy to use, cycle parking for over 90 cycles was required, to be located within an accessible, underground facility.Falco manufactured, supplied and installed a series of over 90 double-sided FalcoLevel-Eco two-tier cycle parking spaces within an underground facility at the prestigious development, providing employees and visitors with secure and accessible cycle parking. The popular FalcoLevel-Eco design was chosen for its capability to be located within compact areas, such as the underground facility shown here, providing cyclists with twice as many cycle parking spaces that would have otherwise been available when using traditional cycle racks and stands.Double-sided variations of the popular cycle rack were used to fit inconspicuous within the tight constraints of the space envelope available. The recent installation shown here at Candleriggs Square is just one of many underground environments Falco has supplied and installed cycle parking equipment for. Other recent examples include two-tier cycle parking for Macquarie Bank in London, three flagship Selfridges stores across the UK, VelowUp® vertical cycle stands and two-tier cycle racks for the University of Edinburgh, 150 two-tier cycle rack spaces for Marks & Spencer at Paddington Basin in London as well as semi-vertical cycle parking for Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.The FalcoLevel-Eco is a high density and budget friendly two-tier cycle parking system which accommodates twice the number of bicycles compared to any other traditional cycle rack or stand. The FalcoLevel two-tier series is the UK’s best-selling high density cycle rack and is used at the UK’s first ever cycle hub at Leeds City Station as well as the UK’s two largest cycle hubs at Cambridge and Chelmsford Stations. For more information about the FalcoLevel-Eco cycle parking system or how Falco can assist your cycle parking scheme, please contact our helpful sales team on 01538 380080.

ASF Balmoral Parapet Wall Post and Panel, Sale Town Hall

Architectural Street Furnishings part of WB White Foundry

ASF were already doing extensive works at Sale Town Hall using the ASF Balmoral Panel Post with sight gap, employed as pedestrian guardrail. To the rear of the Town Hall is the Bridgewater Canal which is followed by the Bridgewater Way. An existing wall was being heightened alongside the footpath to make it higher than the mixed use development area directly to the rear of the building. Wishing to ensure a suitable barrier but not completely obscure the view, the client chose the ASF Balmoral Parapet Post and Panel System for the wall top. This allows people to stand on the higher ground and still enjoy the vistas along the canal whilst ensuring the wall itself reaches an overall height to meet the required standards.

The £6 million Sandiefield Building Scheme for New Gorbals Housing Association – comprising 29 offices and flats – was completed in July 2019 and constructed by CCG limited and Interlocked Construction.AG supplied its well-established Plaza paving, in Salt + Pepper (400x200x80), to provide a beautiful and robust hard landscaping solution for the surroundings outside the centre. This product was integrated into the design to create polished, smooth lines and was supplied in various sizes (Plaza Pepper 200x100x80) to create aesthetically-pleasing patterning effects to the finished look.David McCandlish, Regional Sales Manager at AG Scotland, said:“We quickly identified Plaza, in Salt and Pepper, as the perfect fit for this major project. Plaza is a heavy-duty solution that is equipped with slip resistance, which will be important, given the high volume of footfall at the centre. This project tied in with another Medical Centre at New Gorbals for which Plaza and Xflo Plaza products were used.”AG’s Plaza paving is produced in the UK using locally sourced materials. 100% renewable energy is used during the production process, something AG has been devoted to implementing across all of its manufacturing locations.

Bishops Avenue - Tilt and Turn Windows in a new development

Bishops Avenue - Tilt and Turn Windows in a new development

Gowercroft Joinery Limited

Tilt and Turn Windows in a new developmentGowercroft's expertise shines through in their remarkable tilt and turn windows project on Bishops Avenue, London, known as "Billionaires Row." Overcoming technical challenges with meticulous attention to detail, Gowercroft delivered high-quality windows and sliding doors, elevating the new build project to a regal level.Gowercroft products used:Kedleston Tilt and TurnPeveril Lift and SlideAccoya®The Advantages of Tilt and Turn Windows:Tilt and turn windows, popular in continental Europe, are particularly suitable for large residential and commercial buildings. These windows have both vertical and horizontal hinges, allowing them to function like regular casement windows when opened horizontally. When opened vertically, they provide excellent ventilation while maintaining optimal security, as the opening mechanism remains inaccessible from the outside. Tilt and turn windows also feature multiple locking points for enhanced security when closed.Overcoming Technical Challenges:The architect initially specified standard casement windows for the property, which featured large sliding doors. However, Gowercroft recommended installing tilt and turn systems instead to better suit the building's style. The challenge arose due to the height of some window units exceeding 2 meters, placing significant stress on the hinges and mechanisms. Gowercroft's technical director, David Brown, conducted extensive research to identify the best gearing and specially designed frames to withstand these increased stresses.A Testament to Exceptional Craftsmanship:Gowercroft's bespoke tilt and turn units outperformed those of other companies in terms of functionality, aesthetics, and projected longevity. The windows, doors, and joinery at Bishops Avenue were meticulously crafted in American Black Walnut with bronze inlays and accessories, resulting in a tasteful and luxurious finish.Extensive Installation and Impeccable Functionality:The project involved the creation and installation of over 200 windows and doors, internal door sets, architraves, staircases, rails, furniture, and skirting boards, amounting to almost 2 years of dedicated work. Completed in 2008, the multifunctional window and door units remain fully operational, a testament to their exceptional quality and longevity. Gowercroft continues to maintain and service the tilt and turn windows at 49 Bishops Avenue, ensuring their optimal functionality and eliminating the need for customer maintenance.Testimonial from Barry Glantz, WillowAcre Investments & Developments Ltd:Barry Glantz, of WillowAcre Investments & Developments Ltd, praises Gowercroft for their commitment to quality and professionalism, recommending them without hesitation. Glantz highlights Gowercroft as a company that goes the extra mile, adding value to every project.Elevate your architectural designs with Gowercroft's tilt and turn windows, exemplifying excellence, durability, and functionality. Experience the difference of meticulous craftsmanship and customer satisfaction that extends beyond project completion.

Doddington Housing

Doddington Housing

Forterra Building Products

13 new dwellings situated in the small village of Doddington, Lincolnshire are providing much-needed affordable housing for people working at nearby Doddington Hall.Located on Main Street, the development enhances this area of the village, providing important infill on the site once occupied by the local school, which was demolished in the 1960s and has latterly been used as a car park and general storage area. It is bordered by a mix of farmland, mature trees and shrubs, and existing housing, and lies partially within a conservation area. The development comprises two 2-bedroomed, five 3-bedroomed and six 4-bedroomed terraced and semi-detached dwellings. One of the terraces fronts onto Main Street while the remainder have been sensitively designed to create an attractive group of dwellings centred around a newly-created ‘village green’.Perhaps the most significant element of the appearance of the scheme is the elevation of the terraces towards Main Street. In developing the specifically tailored to design for this elevation, account was taken of the nature of the surrounding buildings within the village.Although not prominent to public view, the balance of the development has been designed in a manner sympathetic to the architectural vernacular found within the village. With a common thread running-through which will serve to unify the development and reinforce the sense-of-place which is presented by the scheme. In particular, simple, uncomplicated/uncluttered designs have been developed. High quality materials have been utilised for the development, essential in reinforcing the architectural character of the development, reflecting the high-quality of other developments which have been executed within the village recently. The brick selected was Forterra’s Butterley Breckland Multi Reserve, a red brick with a tumbled texture.

Degafloor QTA / Full Broadcast - Swimming Pool Area Resin Flooring

Degafloor Ltd

A Degafloor Approved Installer - The National Flooring Company Ltd were approached by a A 4-star hotel, in the South of England, who had decided to update their flooring system around the swimming pool. The existing floor tiles, which had started to debond posed a trip hazard and therefore needed to be replaced. The client also advised they were experiencing problems with standing water.Following the removal of the existing floor tiles, the installation of a new screed was required to build back the levels and ensure there were adequate falls in the floor for water to run back into the pool. Throughout the installation, the gym remained open, and it had been advised that the pool closure needed to be kept to an absolute minimum. The National Flooring Company installed the Degafloor Deep Fill Mortar Repair system, a fast-curing underlayment, which ensured the refurbishment programme could continue with no downtime due to curing. The existing drain was removed and replaced, along with the light box and leveller covers, which all received new stainless-steel units. A new trim was fixed around the perimeter of the pool and the Degafloor resin system, which has an excellent bond to metal surfaces, was abutted up to all the stainless-steel items. The Degafloor QTA system used within the project, is a quartz trowelled system that can be laid to falls. The system is broadcast with aggregate to provide an extremely slip resistant finish, even under wet conditions, making it ideally suited to a swimming pool surround. Coved skirting was installed around the perimeter of the room creating a completely impervious finish, with no weak spots and therefore reducing future maintenance costs. The full refurbishment was completed over 12 days, ensuring that the closure was kept to a bare minimum. The clients main requirements were they required an anti-slip floor that would eliminate the current situation they had with standing water. They specifically requested that the closure was kept to a minimum as they are a "member's club" as well as facilitating the hotel, which remained open throughout the installation. The client was extremely satisfied with the end result and felt they now have a floor finish that is much better suited to their environment.

Having purchased the lands from the Golf Club, Cosgrave Developments wanted to ensure the natural contours of the existing grounds were maintained when building the public amenity park – Honeypark – which is the centrepiece of their development. As a focal meeting point the area contained mature parklands with a man-made lake and childrens play area as the main attraction. With this area being lower in the development a safe, durable and visually pleasing design was needed, Mick Cosgrave chose AG’s Ground TerraPave® natural aggregate flags to meet the specification, with its durable finish and low slip resistance it met all the safety criteria for this major walkway. When laid it’s visually impressive surface draws you to the central focal point of the scheme. To improve safety for the visually impaired AG’s smooth bullnose kerbs setts were used to form the numerous step details complimenting the smooth crisp clean appearance of the paving and flags. The main green space areas also had sloping contours where soil retention was needed to aid structural integrity and drainage, AG’s Vertica Retaining Wall system was selected. The low rise walls meet the engineering specification whilst the choice of colour was in line with the design choice for the scheme. The unique split level design also provided a natural amphitheatre and seating area for the residents, the low level of the walling kept in mind the safety aspects for younger children in the area.In the main residential areas Cosgrave Developments choose AG’s River Stone Blackwater paving for the parking bay areas.
