BedZED

Axter Ltd

The sustainable features of this ‘carbon-neutral’ development include excellent insulation, south facing terraces to maximise heat gain from the sun (passive solar gain) and structures built from natural, recycled and reclaimed materials, all sourced from within a 50 mile radius.Systems in useCityflor®Extensive Living RoofOverviewBeddington Zero Energy Development (BedZED) comprises a development of 82 homes in the London Borough of Sutton and is the UK’s largest mixed use sustainable community. It was designed to create a thriving community in which ordinary people could enjoy a high quality of life, while living within their fair share of the Earth’s resources.ChallengesAxter were tasked with providing a waterproofing and living roof solution for the garden terraces and higher level roof areas. As this was an environmentally-friendly housing development, careful consideration had to be taken to adhere to the sustainability requirements of the project. The thermal efficiency of the development was an essential design consideration with all roof areas needing to meet demanding thermal performance criteria. Lightweight extensive green roof systems were chosen for curved and sloping sections of the building due to their low maintenance characteristics, combined with high efficiency Solar PV renewable energy (BioSolar) systems on the roofs. Combining roof top planting with Solar PV improved the system performance and provided a positive visual impact.SolutionsCityflor multi-layer warm roof waterproofing system was designed and specified by Axter to meet the project’s demanding sustainability requirements. The use of a robust air and vapour control layer (AVCL) low permeability membrane, was installed to ensure the building was quickly made watertight during construction, whilst performing the critical technical function of controlling the movement of air, water vapour and heat leakage from within the building. The ideal capsheet choice for the development was our BBA accredited Force 4000 Trafic membrane, due to its anti-root technology and long term proven compatibility with living roofs. The installation of Force 4000 Trafic provided a robust waterproofing surface upon which the extensive living roof could be installed without risk of damage to the waterproofing by follow on trades.Extensive living roofs typically have thin (80mm) growing medium/substrate layers to keep the system depth and saturated load imposed on the building to a minimum. The Hydrolite extensive living roof system was specified because of its ultra lightweight growing medium as this weight reduction was ideal for the project’s unconventional structure. The Hydrolite living roof system was completed with a low maintenance planting design, utilising hardier, more drought tolerant plant species. The planting style was naturalistic with the aim of establishing self-sustaining plant ecology on the roof.AcknowledgmentsAxter worked closely with the project design and construction team to ensure that we were able to deliver a truly stunning and successful project.RAM Roofgarden LTD

FACTORY - ROBINSONS BREWERY - STAIR NOSINGS

FACTORY - ROBINSONS BREWERY - STAIR NOSINGS

Quantum Flooring Solutions, a trading name of Quantum Profile Systems Ltd

The ProjectRobinsons is one of the largest independent breweries in the UK. It has a rich history, with the family brewing in the centre of Stockport since 1849. Its main building is called the Unicorn Brewery, after the pub which the family originally ran from 1838.The bottling plant needed a refurbishment, to help keep employees safe. The brewery requested a highly slip resistant flooring surface, to deal with the inherent risk of liquid spillages in the plant, which could cause hazards. To go with the floorcovering they also needed a hard-wearing, robust, and highly slip resistant stair nosing. The stair nosing would need to have low slip potential in both dry and wet conditions, to help ensure safety in the plant. The main way the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) assesses the slip resistance of flooring and stair nosings is by using a pendulum test, which measures the friction of a surface. In this way, a pendulum test value (PTV) can be given to different products. Any stair nosing must have a PTV of 36, or more, in dry and wet conditions to be considered low slip potential. The ApproachSteven Holland Flooring contacted Quantum Flooring to discuss the most appropriate stair nosings for the project. They decided to go with Quantum’s Ecoglo slip resistant yellow tread material, Eglo-34, fitted into double-channel SF225R Slenderline carriers.Ecoglo tread infills are often utilised for their photoluminescent qualities. From just 30 minutes of charge with either natural or artificial light, Ecoglo’s photoluminescent strips can provide 7 hours of glow in either internal or external environments. Ecoglo also has a slip resistant silicon carbide tread material.Eglo-34 is one of the highly slip resistant silicon carbide tread infills in the Ecoglo range. It has a PTV of 70 in dry conditions, and 66 in wet conditions. These both easily exceed the minimum required guidelines for low slip potential in HSE publications, and slip resistance in BS 8300-2:2018. This made Eglo-34 ideal for Robinsons Brewery. The OutcomeSteven Holland Flooring expertly cut Quantum’s yellow Eglo-34 silicon carbide strips to size, and fitted them in both channels of the SF225R aluminium stair nosings. As Ecoglo tread material is secret fix, there was no need for plugs to hide the screws. The result looks fantastic and helps to ensure the safety of all employees at the Robinsons bottling plant. The stair nosing is durable and has very low slip potential, with the double channel Eglo-34 double treads maximising the surface area of grip. The SF225R profiles have a ramped back, to remove any trip hazard at the back of the steps. With the help of Quantum’s stair nosings, Steven Holland Flooring have ensured a safe, secure and visually pleasing staircase in Robinsons bottling plant. The installation will be used for years to come, helping to prevent slips, trips and falls on the spiral stairs.

Schneider Electric’s Leeds offices now feature an impressive living walls system, transforming the space into a vibrant and eco-friendly environment. Installed by Living Walls UK, this project underscores Schneider Electric’s dedication to staff well-being, capturing harmful substances, and biodiversity enhancement.Sustainability in bloomSchneider Electric, a global leader in energy management and automation solutions, has chosen the MobiPanel vertical green wall system from Mobilane. The collection of green walls includes a total of 4,500 plants, ideal for improving air quality and local biodiversity. Schneider wanted to integrate green walls into the design of their new office to enhance employee well-being, reduce carbon emissions, provide a valuable boost to biodiversity, and support their ESG objectives. This location attracts many visitors and is seen as Schneider’s flagship for sustainability and corporate culture.Robust design and simple setupLiving Walls UK chose to use MobiPanel for this project due to their experience in installing this robust, water-saving system. The decision to go with MobiPanel was driven by its water efficiency, which is not only beneficial for plant health and the economy but also helps to minimise the ecological footprint. Additionally, the system is straightforward to install, allowing 30m² to be erected on-site per day. This made it an ideal solution for their ESG objectives. The project was installed in four phases, starting with the reception area, followed by the electric vehicle charging stations and the courtyard.”Schneider Electric’s green strategyLiving walls contribute to reducing carbon emissions by absorbing harmful gases, aligning with Schneider’s goal to reduce their carbon footprint. The variety of plants used in this façade supports local biodiversity by providing additional habitats for insects and birds. This enhances the overall ecosystem in the area.

Hahn Plastics Ltd

CHALLENGEIn Toronto, ON a large mail sorting facility was having an issue with chemicals coming from a concrete processing plant bordering their employee parking lot. The customer was looking to create both a visual and physical barrier from the equipment and excess dust. The fence had to be 2.4m tall, solid and without worry of material maintenance. They wanted to replace the existing fence that was just chain link with tarps, and an eyesore on their property.SOLUTIONA much more visually appealing and effective solution was found with hanit® 100% recycled plastic tongue and groove boards by HAHN, supported by galvanized steel beams. The 3.6m long beams were sunk 1/3 of the length into concrete, then filled with the 3.8cm x 13cm x 2133cm long T&G boards. Each panel was further reinforced at the base using a small hanit® support. The result was a simple, long-lasting privacy fence that met the customer’s needs. Shown here nearly three years after installation, the privacy fence has been a continued success. After numerous seasonal changes and close exposure to the conditions produced by the concrete plant, this installation demonstrates the durability and potential applications of hanit® 100% recycled plastic products.

John Ball Primary School, nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of Blackheath, London, teaches students aged 3 to 11, fostering a diverse and lively community. The school’s administration recognized the need for an aesthetic transformation of their premises and sought to create a more inviting and secure schoolyard environment. In pursuit of this vision, John Ball Primary School partnered with Meristem, a renowned installer, to bring Mobilane’s Instant Ivy Green Screens to life. The installation has since significantly impacted the school’s overall appearance and atmosphere.Instant Ivy Green ScreensThe choice of Mobilane’s Instant Ivy Green Screens was driven by their ability to provide an instant transformation of the schoolyard. Mobilane’s Green Screens, available in various sizes and plant types, are celebrated for their quality and sustainability. Grown in biodegradable containers composed of coconut fibers, the Green Screens present a seamless blend of nature and urban surroundings, aligning perfectly with the school’s objectives.Effective privacy and security solution James Powles, the premises manager of John Ball Primary School, played a pivotal role in overseeing the installation and monitoring the impact of the Mobilane Green Screens. According to Mr. Powles, these screens have not only elevated the school’s external aesthetics but also created a more welcoming and natural boundary around the schoolyard. He observed that the screens had an immediate and lasting impression on the students. The initial response from the students was one of excitement. As Mr. Powles noted, “At first, there was a wow factor, and now the pupils play happily alongside them without damaging them.” The children seem calmer, and the Green Screens also serve as a windbreak, mitigating the disruptive effects of gusty winds. In terms of privacy and security, the green screens have successfully fulfilled their purpose, as Mr. Powles mentioned that “pupils are not trying to interact with passers-by.” This newfound sense of separation and security has allowed the children to engage in their activities within a more protected environment. The collaboration with Meristem, from the selection and installation to ongoing maintenance of the green screens, was characterized by its efficiency and professionalism. According to Mr. Powles, “No effort was needed from me,” which reflects the seamless partnership that facilitated the successful completion of the project.A versatile choiceThe Mobilane Green Screen is a ready-made hedge featuring a steel grid intricately covered with climbing plants, all grown within a biodegradable container made of coconut fibers. This innovation simplifies the installation process: after preparing the soil, you can place the hedge directly into the ground, securely anchored with posts and brackets tailored to your needs, whether it’s a universal bracket for posts or a wall bracket for wall mounting. The selection of plants is versatile, offering options like the evergreen Hedera helix Woerner for a classic, dark green look or the vibrant Pyracantha Dart’s Red with non-poisonous red berries and beautiful white flowers, adding color to your green screen.
