Brett Omega Flow permeable paving provides the SuDS for the car parks on the Sixfields leisure development in Northampton

Brett Landscaping

The Sixfields development is part of the Northampton Brownfield Initiative where a permeable pavement was chosen for the car park which serves the rugby and football clubs. Sitting on the bank of the River Nene, it was evident that any design had to minimise future risk of flooding if it was to be viable. Brett advised on the use of SuDS to minimise the risk of any future flooding on the site. The two car parks, of 19,000m2 and 16,000m2 respectively, were both constructed using Omega Flow permeable paving. To view the whole case study click the link.

RESIN BOUND SWIMMING POOL SURROUND FOR DAVID LLOYD GYM IN ACTONAddagrip approved contractor Total Protection (GB) Ltd has installed 294m2 of Addabound Resin Bound surfacing around the swimming pool at the David Lloyd Gym in East Acton, London.SURFACING REQUIREMENTThe client was looking for a decorative Resin Bound paving for the outdoor swimming pool at the gym which has just undergone a £9m refurbishment to provide an indoor and outdoor pool, modern spa and racquet courts. The requirement was for a low maintenance system that would be smooth and comfortable underfoot, providing a decorative aggregate finish that could be powerwashed as part of the cleaning regime of the pool area.Interserve Construction appointed Total Protection (GB) Ltd to prepare the surface and install 294m2 of BBA approved Addabound Resin Bound surfacing in a recycled marble Dune blend. The challenge was the preparation required to the existing surfaces surrounding and adjacent to the outdoor pool to ensure a suitable substrate for the Resin Bound system. Undulations and differing depths were regulated with compatible screed material and an aluminium edge detail was installed to provide an edge for the 12mm depth of Addabound. The new surface was installed in a single application in May 2018 to prevent any day joints and ensure the smooth, seamless finish was achieved in time for the grand opening.

Skylark Roof Garden, Kingdom Street, Paddington, London

AG Paving and Building Products Ltd

Our premium granite TerraPave® flagstones were a perfect choice for this scheme at one of London’s foremost rooftop cocktail bars and pizzerias. Skylark Roof Garden, located on Kingdom Street, sits on the 10th floor of Paddington Central, offering incredible views overlooking the beautiful Notting Hill, on the banks of Little Venice. For this project, a combination of Pedestals and TerraPave® flags were utilised. The incorporation of Pedestals (stools on which the flags were laid) , meant no base was required. The depth of TerraPave® flags is calibrated as part of the manufacturing process, delivering exceptional dimensional accuracy which in turn delivered consistent levelling across the terrace. Project architects, Allies and Morrison selected our TerraPave® Flags, in Rimini and Milano Ground due to their rich, distinctive styles and impressive durability in highly pedestrianised areas. These flags are produced with locally-sourced, natural aggregates instead of pigments meaning their unique colouration won’t fade. TerraPave® also offers a cost-effective, and practical alternative to traditional stone paving. The £80m Paddington Central scheme was completed built by Wates Construction and designed by Allies & Morrison. Some of the impressive project’s additional features include London’s highest basketball court, an external glazed stair tower, and a public colonnade around the retail space on the ground floor.

AG is proud to have played an intrinsic part in the redevelopment of the Curragh Racecourse in Co Kildare – Irish racing’s biggest ever capital development project, which opened to the public in May at an estimated cost of over €80 million.AG supplied TerraPave® flagstones in Genoa (Ground and Textured) to internal and external areas of the new grandstand and outer buildings. The internal flags for Phase 2 were Genoa Ground 600×400, manufactured with a square edge. Internally, AG also supplied made-to-order steps with strip inserts and a unique notch to the underside to improve safety. The external flags were Genoa Textured 600×400, which were used on the external balcony areas of the stand.“At a site meeting with the client, John Sisk & Sons (main contractor), Grimshaw Architects from London and NMA Architects from Dublin, it became clear that AG were the sole company that could meet all the criteria for all parties,” said Brendan Reynolds, Specifications & Commercial Sales Consultant.“The original specification was for natural granite, but time, costs and consistency of colour became issues for all involved. AG suggested TerraPave® Genoa, in both textures, to suit the internal and external areas, which matched the colour requirement of the specification. We were also able to provide matching steps to meet Part M Building Regulations and a square edge to the flags, which the client wanted.“Finally, we were able to agree a production programme which met with Sisk’s requirement to hand over the building in the first week of April 2019.”

Paving the way for a “new normal” with outdoor sanitiser stations

KWC DVS Limited

Areas around Torbay have recently been provided with outdoor sanitiser stations in the hope to encourage hand hygiene for shoppers in the high streets. Dart Valley, the southern division of Franke Water Systems UK, are specialists in hygienic solutions and adapted one of their current stainless steel hand sanitising stations to provide a bespoke solution for areas around Torbay. The technical team at were proud to be part of a local project and spent a significant amount of time designing the bespoke sanitisers to ensure all requirements were met. The finished product was a touch-free, automatic free-standing sanitiser station, manufactured from 2mm grade 316 stainless steel, which is weatherproof and an ideal solution for an outdoor product. 316 stainless steel contains an addition of molybdenum that gives it improved corrosion resistance, a key design factor for an outdoor product in a seaside town. Stainless steel is robust and vandal resistant, meaning it can withstand such heavy use and help prevent any potential damage. The robust body of the sanitiser station also features a maintenance hatch with high-security tamper-resistant screws, so that the stations can be regularly refilled. The touchless dispensers exceed the design of those seen in most supermarkets and stores, which can often be found grubby with overspilling. Such design considerations as touch-free and using easy to maintain materials should be at the forefront of any hygienic product, particularly in busy areas.

The architecture, design and landscaping of Buildings 1 and 2 was key to setting the tone for the tech hotspot. Buildings 1 and 2 form a new gateway to the dedicated technology estate while collectively making up 210,000ft2 of commercial office space.  The two-building design spans four storeys tall and showcases a striking colonnade. The cladded feature columns provide an impressive new entrance to the park, while echoing the curve of the spine road. Buildings 1 and 2 offer a dedicated pedestrian and cycle area. The public realm space between the two buildings required extensive paving which complemented the state-of-the-art buildings. The client’s primary objective was to remove existing, dated buildings and replace them with state-of-the-art facilities for the scientific community. The master plan has sustainability and efficiency at the core of its design. The SolutionTobermore’s high quality granite aggregate paving accentuates the contemporary office scheme Tobermore supplied paving of exceptional quality to complement the state-of-the-art office hub. The public realm space between the two buildings features Tobermore’s granite aggregate paving in contemporary grey tones. The dedicated pedestrian and cycle area are paved with Braemar, Fusion and Hydropave Fusion which all feature a striking granite aggregate surface which adds to the ultra-modern scheme. Braemar offers a premium concrete paving product with aesthetic appeal of natural granite. It boasts a striking, contemporary look while being a more cost-effective and sustainable alternative to natural stone.  Fusion made a modern striking entrance to the Science Park. The area required a combination of permeable and impermeable paving. It would take a keen eye to spot where the standard block paving ends and permeable paving starts. Hydropave Fusion and Fusion was applied in permeable and non-permeable format which added continuity to the streetscape.  The new buildings achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
