PERIMETER SECURITY FOR WATER TREATMENT WORKS

PERIMETER SECURITY FOR WATER TREATMENT WORKS

Zaun Limited

One of the UK’s largest utility companies required adequate security protection to their portable water sites. Water is treated from the local river supply at the site, which then supplies the local area. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the site is protected from any trespassers or any other miscreants who may be up to no good. Sites of this nature must be kept safe and secure to ensure that the water supplies to the public are kept as clean and safe as possible. The site is operated 24/7 and required additional security support to ensure the large site is kept safe and secure.Project Brief for Water Treatment Works SecurityThe site is required to be protected in line with the company Risk-Based Approach (RBA) and security requirements from DEFRA with recommended security upgrades to the physical perimeter security fencing, video surveillance systems (VSS), access control and intruder detection systems.Perimeter security fencing was required to be upgraded to at least LPS 1175 SR2 (B3) level with detection and access control and careful consideration to the surrounding forest, home to several animals, including Wild Boar. This causes several problems for the site, including damage to the existing fence and potential water quality issues. In addition, the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) are particularly interested in the vermin and pest control for the site, so designing the security solution had to consider this. The SolutionBinns Security was appointed as principal contractor for CDM and project managed the whole project from start to finish, including coordinating works. Based on the site's requirements, Zaun’s HiSec Super SR2 fencing was selected to upgrade the existing non-rated perimeter fencing and gates to LPS1175 SR2 standards, providing the client with perimeter fencing system with a guaranteed delay of at least 3 minutes.Designed with a height of 2.4m as a minimum with a 358 anti-climb mesh configuration makes it very difficult to scale and prevents climbing aids. To combat vermin and pest control, the perimeterfencing is also required to be buried at 300mm, which stops the vermin and also prevents burrowing from any potential intruders. Both pedestrian and vehicular gates were also upgraded to LPS1175 SR2 to match the fence line and provide operational access without compromising the site's security. This single layered LPS1175 SR2 rated fencing system was accompanied by Harper Chalice’s perimeter intrusion detection system (PIDS) FenceSecure, which provides an early warning for any unauthorised access. Additionally, this system provided a full perimeter PID system covering fencing, gates and pedestrian access points.more...

Wade Stainless Steel Linear Drainage from Alumasc specified for iconic hotel’s Aqua ClubA stunning £10 million pool complex at Cornwall’s iconic Headland Hotel, has been fitted with Wade stainless steel linear drainage from Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS).The imposing Grade 2 listed hotel commands clifftop views overlooking Newquay’s Fistral Beach, and after first opening its doors to guests in 1900, it was requisitioned as a Royal Air Force hospital during WWII and has since become a popular filming location. Over the decades, work and improvements to the hotel’s facilities have been ongoing; 40 unique holiday cottages have been added, as well as a spa and most recently, the new Aqua Club.Wade Stainless Steel Hidden Linear Slot Channel was specified by Mark Duston, from Lilly Lewarne Architects. The discreet channel features a slim 6mm drainage slot making it ideal for barefoot areas. In this case, it was fabricated by Wade specifically for the Headland project, in 1.5mm polished grade 316 stainless steel and is BS EN 1433 compliant.Mark Duston explains:“Wade was approached early in the project when the pool design was still being firmed up. The ideas we were working with required floor channels to be formed into complex curves around the perimeter of the space – and we needed a supplier we could trust. We were pleased that such difficult shapes could be fabricated exactly as we expected. The finished product looked great, giving the clean, discreet appearance we wanted.”Richard Palmer, Director of the Headland Hotel, is always keen to use high quality products for all the work required on the 120-year-old building. He worked closely with JE Contractors and Lilly Lewarne to achieve the best possible results. He comments: “It’s important that the best products are always used in the work we do to the hotel, especially when it comes to water management. If the drains ever had to come out, the time and cost would be far more than that of simply using the absolute best products to begin with.”Mark Duston of Lilly Lewarne concludes: “We have worked with Wade before so knew the quality of their products and technical assistance that would be available to us; it was an easy selection to make.” Wade Stainless Steel Hidden Linear Slot Channels are available with either a level inert or in-built falls, minimum depth of channel is 40mm to a maximum of 110mm. The base of the channel can either be flat or V-shaped, to aid with selfcleaning.

Longstone Roundabout - Gatic KerbDrain

Alumasc Water Management Solutions

Gatic Kerbdrain controls the flow at Longstone Road RoundaboutGatic Kerbdrain from Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS) is performing to its full potential as part of a new road layout in Edinburgh. Longstone Road had been experiencing a number of traffic challenges which demanded an upgrade of the existing local infrastructure, including the busy roundabout.Main contractor on the scheme, Luddon Construction, has a well-established and successful relationship with Scotia Supply Co., who had recently become an approved supplier of Gatic Kerbdrain. Dave Kelly of Scotia, was impressed by the product and was instrumental in its successful specification to Luddon for the Longstone Road project. The roundabout presented several challenges, including the demand for a large number of internal and external radial sections of varying degrees. Not only were these sections possible using Kerbdrain, but stocks were also readily available, enabling fast delivery to site, and ensuring all deadlines were met.Dave Kelly comments:“Having seen Gatic Kerbdrain at work in other successful applications, I was keen to become a supplier. My order of stock from Gatic was timely, as it coincided with our involvement with Luddon Construction on the Longstone Road regeneration. We were able to quickly add enough stock for the project onto our original order, securing fast delivery straight to site. The nature of the product also meant that it could be cut easily to accommodate the curvature.”Gatic Kerbdrain is a heavy-duty combined kerb and drainage system (CKD) that provides an efficient and safe method of drainage on potentially any surface or structure with a kerb edge. It moves away from the concept of two-part systems by offering a single, solid, monolithic system. Not only do these single units negate the need for costly handling equipment, they also present exceptionally quick installation times whilst reducing the risk of personal injury.Environmental CredentialsIn addition to price and availablity, Gatic Kerbdrain also addressed the enviromental considerations of the Longstone Road project. Kerbdrain is manufactured using 70% recycled polymers, with every 500mm unit deriving from 199 plastic bottles, caps and closures. The result is a product offering exceptional strength (compliant with BS EN 1433:2002 Group 3 kerbside installations) and improved impact resistance providing it is installed in accordance with Gatic's installation details. End-of-life units are 100% recyclable.Dave Kelly concludes:“The specification of Gatic Kerbdrain at Longstone Road has not only delivered in terms of product performance, but it has showcased the reliability and expertise provided by the Gatic technical team. More projects are in the pipeline, and both Luddon Construction and our team here at Scotia will look forward to working with Gatic again in the future.”Kerbdrain is part of the Gatic civil drainage systems range, which, for more than 90 years, has been used to capture, control and return run-off safely into the natural water cycle, contributing directly to wider sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS). It is commonly used in retail parks, drive-throughs, distribution yards, along highways and motorways, and within residential housing developments.Gatic Civil Drainage & Access Covers sits under the AWMS umbrella, as one of five brands well known for innovation, quality and longevity. Port of Huelva - Gatic UltraSlot takes on massive port expansion at Huelva

Alumasc Water Management Solutions

The Port of Huelva in Andalusia has undergone a €40 million expansion, which saw the specification of over a kilometre of Gatic Ultraslot from Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS).Operated by the Turkish group, Yilport, the Spanish terminal is the second largest port in Andalusia and provides a gateway for global cargo trade to multiple continents such as Europe, Africa and the Americas. The project extended the north end of the dock by over half a kilometre. The design and build contract was awarded to Ferrovial Construction, who had previously installed Gatic’s UltraSlot linear channel drainage system at Seville Airport. Ferrovial’s technical team contacted Gatic to develop an in-depth technical and economic assessment of the project’s drainage requirements.Careful consideration was given to a number of options before it was decided that two lines of UltraSlot would be installed with four collectors to accommodate the large amount of surface water on the 16,500m2 esplanade. The installation comprised ten runs with varying channel sizes up to 350mm. This combination of sizes helped to maximise hydraulic capacity and minimize total costs, thanks to the competitive pricing of the 350mm channels.UltraSlot is designed for use in external concrete areas subject to F900 loading, by ensuring sufficient depth of concrete over the main body of the system to withstand ultra heavy-duty loads. It offers high capacity, resistance and durability, and has no moving or removable parts, which positions the system as market leader across the Port sector worldwide. UltraSlot units are available from 100 to 600mm wide; the largest unit capable of handling rainwater intensity up to 1,008 mm/hr. The range offers these additional benefits: ·      Quick installation times·      Maximum intake·      Impact resistance·      Reduced maintenance costs·      Tamper-proof The range can be installed in areas likely to experience extreme temperatures, and when installed in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations, should perform for the lifetime of the site. A comprehensive range of grates and covers is available to suit every conceivable system design, supplied with locking bolts for additional safety and security. A ‘treadsafe’ option is also available, which makes the channels safe to cross when used in areas subject to high foot traffic. AWMS: Leading the way in sustainable drainage The AWMS ‘Concept to Completion’ process is underpinned by a solid company infrastructure which offers the following: ·      UK-based manufacturing facilities and foundry·      national brand-specific sales team and regional support network·      in-house technical team·      design team to fulfil bespoke design requirements·      rainwater and drainage calculations and on-site surveys·      take off and estimations·      in-house, BBA approved powder coating facilities·      unrivalled dedicated UK technical and after-sales supportGatic Civil Drainage & Access Covers sits under the AWMS umbrella, as one of five brands well known for innovation, quality and longevity. Protecting a primary school from water damage by providing a leak detection system

Andel Ltd

After a prestigious school near Birmingham suffered extensive damage when a leak went unchecked, we installed our award-winning leak detection system to prevent future devastationA tiny leak left to escalate at St George’s in Edgbaston ruined thousands of pounds of property and equipment and left the school without a properly functioning IT department. Leaks within buildings are very common and if not monitored can cause extensive damage, disruption and loss. So, once the school was back on its feet, we were delighted to work with their insurer, Hettle Andrews, to make sure the property was protected against future flooding. St George’s School, EdgbastonSt George’s School is a fully co-educational independent day school for children from ages three to 18 in Edgbaston, near Birmingham. Established as a charitable trust, the school opened in September 1999 as Birmingham’s first independent school to offer a complete education for boys and girls from kindergarten through to the sixth form.We worked with their insurance broker, Hettle Andrews, who facilitated the project. Hettle Andrews works primarily with schools, universities, colleges and charities. In the winter of 2021, the boiler in the room above the IT department of the school began to leak. The school was closed for the holiday period so no one went on-site and the leak went undetected. On return to the school in the New Year, staff discovered the leak which by that point had caused extensive damage.  The leak had not only destroyed the ceiling and light fittings but the whole IT department below including computers, carpets, plug points and furniture. The challengeNo warning: this was the first time anything like this had happened. There were no warning systems in place, nor were there any preventative measures. Extensive damage: the full ceiling had to be replaced, along with expensive light fittings, computers and IT equipment.Inconvenience: it resulted in substantial inconvenience and downtime for the department which in turn affected its daily function within the school.Disruption: the IT department had to be relocated elsewhere in the building, along with any remaining functioning equipment. Time-consuming process: while the damages were being claimed on insurance, the room was cleared and de-humidifiers installed to try and remove any remaining moisture. The solution;Andel Floodline®Andel's unique, award-winning water, oil and gas leak detection and monitoring solution. We are one of the global market leaders in leak detection systems and we knew our Floodline® solution would be a perfect fit. It is a true hybrid that can report to a single integrated control panel – unlike some other systems that require different alarm panels for different types of leak detection.Floodline® covers all possible leak detection requirements, from single-zone to multi-zone and distance measuring systems, with the capability to protect the largest of buildings, both old and new. Floodline® systems allow additional zones, sensors and upgrades to be added easily and cost-effectively so it is future-proof. So, we installed Floodline® SVCP – 2-Valve Control and Floodline® 1-Zone Leak Detection System. This means the school is now able to: Easily monitor all the Floodline® leak detection sensors installedEasily monitor the display LEDs which provide clear alarm information and system status for both leak detection and system faultHave peace of mind knowing the solenoid valve control panel will immediately close two solenoid valves in the event of a leak, ensuring the water source is stopped, preventing any damageBe alerted quickly as there is an audible alarm with a mute functionBe alerted when away from the property as output relays connect to a GSM communicator which sends out an SMS.The result;Bespoke solution: we were delighted to be able to come up with a tailored solution for St George’s School. Early warning: the boiler room at St George’s Edgbaston is now equipped with a bespoke leak detection system that will give early warning should there be any escaping water detected.Confidence: the client feels relieved and more confident now that our leak detection systems have been installed. Peace of mind: knowing they will no longer have to worry about leaks especially when there is no one on-site. Futureproofed: the school knows their chances of this occurring again and their building and equipment being unprotected have now drastically dropped. Community: as schools are the hubs of most communities, the last thing we want is for their day to day operations disrupted by escaping water, something which can be detected early and solutions provided easily. We are proud to have been involved in this project alongside Hettle Andrews and hope to work with more of their clients in future to provide proactive solutions. What the customer said;“We are relieved and more confident now that our leak detection systems have been installed. It has given us peace of mind, knowing we no longer have to worry about any leaks going undetected and resulting in catastrophic damage. The chances of this occurring again, meaning our building and equipment is unprotected, have now drastically dropped. We are really happy with the services and products provided by Andel and would happily recommend them.”Patrick Ryan, Maintenance Manager, St George’s School

Thames Water

Eagle Automation Systems Ltd

Thames Water turned to Eagle when a set of Trackless Bi-Folding Speed Gates were required. Images show the installation before and afterwards. Set on a tight deadline Eagle had to install the Bi Folding Gates without any compromise to security and achieved this whist keeping the old commercial gates operational Bi-Folding Speed Gates do not need the space that a swing gate requires to open. This leaves the full length of the driveway usable for parking vehicles and is useful where space is restricted.
