SuperPhon gifts sound of silence to Droylsden Academy music rooms

SuperPhon gifts sound of silence to Droylsden Academy music rooms

CMS Danskin Acoustics

Opened in 2009, Droylsden Academy in Manchester is a contemporary, open plan teaching environment. The state-of-the-art secondary school serves 1,400 pupils, however since opening it had become apparent that its design and layout had some challenges, in a large part due to the sound pollution associated with the open-plan layout. Contractors Buildmain were briefed to reconfigure a number of areas in order to minimise reverberation and improve the learning environment – and looked to CMS Danskin to identify an appropriate remedial acoustic solution. The ChallengeOne area of the school that needed particular attention was the music room, which was too large to be conducive to effective music practice. Contractors Buildmain were briefed to reconfigure the space into four separate rooms, to provide a soundproof environment for music recital and practice. The new practice rooms were to adjoin an existing classroom and the communal corridor, so controlling reverberation was an integral part of the scheme – the architects had specified the control of sound levels up to 68dB.The SolutionA complete overhaul of the existing music rooms was required – partition walls were removed and a new layout designed to incorporate the four separate practice rooms, an internal corridor and a store room. To achieve the dB rating of 68, Buildmain opted for a combination of acoustic solutions provided by CMS Danskin, including SuperPhon panels in all four rooms. In order to control reverberation in the area, Buildmain constructed the new rooms using a twin-wall method, using 15mm Soundbloc plasterboard with an acoustic matting sandwiched between the layers. The walls were then over-clad using IsoMax Acoustic Insulation Clips. A total of 20 panels were installed by direct fix to the walls of each of the four new music rooms. The 50mm thick panels were supplied in three sizes; 1200x600mm, 1000x500mm and 1000x750mm, and the colour was matched to the school’s existing interior scheme. To offer even higher levels of absorption, CMS Danskin recommended SuperPhon acoustic wall panels to reduce reverberation times and reflected sound. To assist with the correct specification, a CMS Danskin representative visited the site, at short notice, to assess the rooms and subsequently advised on the best options for the SuperPhon panels. The ResultCMS Danskin worked closely with contractors Buildmain in order to meet the very tight time frame of six weeks to install the Superphon wall panels – the project needed to be completed within the school summer holidays, so that the rooms were ready for pupils on their return to school in September 2016.Paul Bryan of Buildmain said: “We had to fit eight weeks’ work into the six-week summer holiday, and CMS Danskin impressed us with their ability to turn around the product so quickly. Not only were they able to deliver to meet our schedule, they were also able to send out an expert to advise on the best options to meet the specification, all within the timeframe.”

Armourcoat Ltd

Severn Trent Water’s new £60m operations centre in Coventry, which aims to set new industry standards with one of the lowest carbon footprints for any UK office building, incorporates equally eco-friendly Armourcoat polished plaster.Designed by Birmingham-based Webb Gray Architects, and built by BAM Construction, this highly-sophisticated energy efficient building featuring the latest eco-technology. Designed for low-energy and low-carbon consumption, the offices include thermal adaptive cooling, biomass boilers, photovoltaic panels, solar panels and rainwater harvesting; justifiably achieving a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating.Armourcoat was used within the reception and main atrium space, to create a stunning and original design statement. Totaling nearly four hundred square metres of hand-applied decorative plaster, Webb Gray specified colourfade artwork for feature panels and curved walls using Armourcoat Spatulata. For the 30-metre high atrium panels, artisan plasterers blended over seventy colours of paste to achieve the seamless finish. Known as ‘stucco lustro veneziano’, Spatulata is a superfine stucco paste that is trowel applied in a series of fine layers to create a highly polished decorative surface. In keeping with the eco specification, the product contains 40% pre-consumer recycled marble. The project also included the use of ‘Anti-Crack’ - an innovative substrate preparation system from Armourcoat which ensures fast-track construction and a tough, unrivalled backing for Armourcoat polished plaster wall finishes. This cost effective, skim-coat plaster is designed for application in 3-4mm layers over plasterboard surfaces. Its use eliminates the need for taping, jointing and sealing the plasterboard surface and provides a first class substrate for Armourcoat finishes.

Soundis

Flagship of the University’s Science Central site...The building is a living laboratory dedicated to the aim of making urban centres more sustainable for future generations. We were contracted to supply & install various major acoustic elements required on this project. From the get go, our client and architect loved Soundis Absorb-R WoodTec range due to their versatility, and the fact we were able to manufacture the products exactly to the project specific specification. One of the Soundis products from the range were the Absorb-R Micro Perforated Timber Panels which were located and installed on the curved rear wall of the auditorium. The timber core panels were faced with Micro Perforated Formica and the client decided upon the colour red which contrasted the other products within the auditorium tremendously. Another major element of our acoustic package were the Absorb-R WoodTec Grooved Timber Panels which were installed within the main classrooms and smaller teaching spaces to provide excellent working spaces for the students by reducing reverberation times and enhancing the quality of Soundis within the areas. The panels in these areas were RAL painted to the colour chosen by the architect to provide the envisaged aesthetic look and feel of the spaces. Finally Soundis Absorb-R WoodTec Timber slats were installed not only on the walls of the corridors and staircases from ground level all the way to the third floor but they were also used as freestanding dividers in large open atrium and circulation spaces throughout the Learning and Teaching Centre. These timber slats were manufactured the exact specification of what the architect wanted to create a modern but sophisticated look within the newly constructed building. All installation carried out by our installation partner UK Acoustics.

Evolution gold façade, Covent garden

Evolution gold façade, Covent garden

Powdertech (Corby) Ltd

St Martin’s Courtyard, originally developed in 2011, has recently been refurbished. This is a mixed-use restaurant and retail destination and the architects, Brimelow McSweeney, wanted a particularly eye-catching new coating for facades and panelling enclosing the courtyard space and its entrances. The objective was a finish that would appear to change in colour and tone as the sun moves across the sky, finally being illuminated from within the panels as dusk falls. The SolutionWorking with the architects, we developed a bespoke textured red/gold powder coating within our Evolution range, a collection that reflects the beauty of natural metals and metal patination. Brimelow McSweeney and the developer visited our plant to see powder coating in action and discuss the shade they were looking to achieve. We made a range of Evolution sample panels and the final choice was a red/gold shade with a highly textured surface, rather like large golden rain drop. It seems to glow, with or without sunlight. We called it ‘Molten Rain’.Around 500 m2 of flat and perforated aluminium façade were coated. Large petal shapes formed by perforations in the aluminium are illuminated by light-boxes at night to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. This unique shade forms an appealing backdrop for visitors enjoying eating, drinking and shopping within the courtyard space.Benefits of Using PowdertechPowdertech has over 30 years’ experience in professional architectural powder coatingColour, tone and texture are our passion and we have the expertise to develop bespoke finishes. The Evolution range has a 25 year guarantee for gloss, colour and adhesion.Powdertech's rigorous pre-treatment system will help to keep the panelling free from corrosion for up to 40-years.Powdertech’s flexible plant can coat a wide variety of shapes and sizes of architectural metal work and fabrications.

Ultimate Rose - Robinson Home

Ultimate Rose - Robinson Home

Roseview Windows

Located in Surrey, this detached Victorian property needed its top floor timber windows replaced due to rotting. Maintaining the windows was proving costly for the homeowners but they needed a solution that would still look authentic next to their ground floor timber sash windows. After researching their options, the homeowners came across Roseview’s traditional timber alternative sash windows. The possibility of maintenance-free sash windows that are indistinguishable from the original box sashes, but while providing modern thermal efficiency and enhanced security, made Ultimate Rose the obvious choice. Using modern technology, Ultimate Rose is completely seamless with traditional joinery style mechanical joints and the slimmest 35mm mid rail on the market. When installed adjacent to the homeowner’s original windows it was almost impossible to see a difference. The home was finished with a single vertical astragal bar to match the home’s existing sightlines and allow for maximum natural light. Additionally, run through horns and a wood grain texture was added for a fully authentic finish. The result is truly indistinguishable, and the homeowners now have traditional and modern performing sash windows that will last for years to come. The owners are now planning to replace the timber windows on the ground floor with Ultimate Rose as well.

Another example of a similar system deployment, in which we worked again with Greenside Landscapes, was the IKEA Hammersmith roof-terrace project.

Oval Village in Lambeth is a project that comprises affordable residential apartments, with office and commercial space, retail and leisure facilities, and parking. The site is part of a large-scale redevelopment of the former Oval Gasworks site, offering 598 apartments with balconies and terraces for which we designed and developed the paving support system. The balconies used the TerraSmart Pedestal Paving System, which is straightforward to install, powerful and fully non-combustible, with the paving laid safely on our RP-FR, millimetre-perfect adjustable paving support pedestals, with edge spring clips around the edges to ensure uniform spacing for an aesthetically perfect finish. The terraces, with a commanding view of the city at the top of the building, feature a hybrid system starting with the TerraSmart Rail Paving System – super-strong thanks to its overlapping lattice framework – to form the ramps, which transition seamlessly into the TerraSmart Pedestal Paving System for the rest of the area.Throughout the project, we worked closely with Formation Architects, HTA Architects, Building Control, NHBC and Berkeley Group to design the most relevant systems for the project. Fenland Flat Roofing installed the systems for the balconies, while those for the terraces were installed by NAO Landscapes.

Equinox is a large USA gymnasium operator and their first venture in London is in High Street Kensington. The site they chose is on the 5th floor, directly above Sony Music where Simon Cowell works, and directly beneath Kensington Roof Gardens, which is a popular and very trendy night spot.Ramboll Acoustics specified that a floating floor was required to reduce impact noise levels from the gym to <55dB L’nT,w. However it soon became clear that the floating floor would have to ensure that no significant disturbance was caused to Sony Music directly beneath. Our local branch worked closely with the contractor and consultants to fine-tune the floating floor system and built several mock-ups to verify the performance. The final design consisted of a Stravifloor Channel isolation rail supporting a composite dry floor construction. The floor under Group Fitness, where all of the gym classes are held, also had layers of steel plate to optimise the low frequency performance. The on-site performance at the end of the job was measured as 35dB L’nT,w although this was dominated by background noise as the performance of the floating floor was so good. The improvement from the base concrete floor was 42dB.

Street furniture rusting steel planters

Powdertech (Corby) Ltd

A major urban regeneration programme to revive a neglected area within the town centre, creating a vibrant community of shops, workplaces, and open spaces.Striking a balance between modern facilities and historic features was at the heart of the design brief, particularly referencing the industrial heritage. In former times this town played a major role in establishing the UK shoe industry Street furniture is throughout the re-development for which the architect decided to use premium powder-coated galvanized steel, delivering both visual appeal and high levels of resistance required within a heavy footfall outdoor environment. Rust-effect powder coat finish, ‘Sahara’ evokes the town’s manufacturing heritage that captures the look of weathered steel without the concern of staining the surrounding paving. Providing excellent weather resistance, colour stability and durability, Sahara was applied to metal planters, seating, bollards, railings and art installations. This achieves visual appeal and a fresh and bold aesthetic. The use of proven powder coating combined with galvanizing technology established in the architectural industry ensures that the street furniture will remain structurally sound and smart for many years to come. The project has achieved a key objective in attracting increased footfall in the commercial ‘sole’ of this once down-at-heel area.
