There will be a new market square at the heart of the community, bordered by around 35,000 sq ft of new shops and cafes. The development will also feature offices; community facilities, two new public squares and 652 new homes.The majority of apartments on the upper levels will have a double aspect and all will have balconies. The intention is to provide a development of great visual depth, using two colours of brick. The balconies are designed with an unusually large 2.3 metre cantilever and to meet this demanding specification, it is the Schöck Isokorb® that is being incorporated into the project. Specifically the product being used at Rathbone Market is the Schöck Isokorb® T type SK for concrete-to-steel connectivity. It is 180mm wide and between 180 and 280mm high to allow flexible adjustment for differing slab thicknesses and contains 80mm of insulation thickness. It can also bear extremely heavy loads and this combination of features makes the units ideal in meeting the various thermal and structural demands involved with such large modern balconies.

Kier was awarded the contract by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) for a new build resettlement prison in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire – as part of their New Prisons Programme. The aim of the programme is to reform and modernise the prison estate to provide more safe, secure and functional prison places focused on supporting rehabilitation.The ChallengeKier needed a cable access infrastructure that could satisfy the extremely secure access requirements of a prison environment spanning a 36-acre site.Over 1100 components were supplied to ensure a fully secure cable access system with features such as custom cabling.Kier’s goals for efficiency and cost-effectiveness, as well as for environmental sustainability and social responsibility, is in line with their brand values.The site required a simplified installation, reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions solution that would both endure and be recyclable at the end of their life. The benefits of Kier’s approach came to the fore during the COVID-19 pandemic.As Kier’s project director Rob Stanton explains, ‘new ways of working and offsite manufacture were embraced to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on project delivery’.The SolutionUsing polypropylene products from Clark-Drain, via subcontractor Mitchellson, significantly reduced the weight of the components as compared to traditional concrete. This removed the need for lifting equipment, reduced the on-site labour required (and the attendant health and safety risks), and dramatically shortened the installation time on this £253 million project.From a sustainability point of view, too, these lighter components scored highly, not only in respect of reduced fuel consumption and end-of-life recyclability, but also in terms of provenance, robustness, and therefore long-life durability.Clark-Drain also made several prior visits to site to assess the project requirements, and, based on these early engagements, added further value by designing, building and deploying, in relatively short timeframes, two new chamber bellmouths, to protect below-ground cabling. The bellmouths enable cables to be easily routed within the inner chamber walls during installation by site operatives, but also enable ducts to be securely housed and connected, inside the chamber walls, prior to concrete backfill being applied during installation. Clark-Drain manufactures over 70% of its products inhouse, including the completed chambers, which were manufactured and built offsite at its yard in Yaxley, Peterborough.Demonstrating its commitment to social value and equitability throughout, Kier also involved its Digital Apprentice trainees in the project, and created a project bank account to ensure easier and quicker supplier payment.Outcomes and ResultsThe figures speak for themselves:Cable access for the project is being assembled 22% faster than if traditional construction methods had been usedLighter materials meant that one third less labour was required on-site to install the chambersSurveys were carried out 70% faster using dronesMillions are being saved on post-project snagging using cloud-based review and QA technologiesThe project has won 15 major industry awardsAnd as for the environmental benefits, long life and recycling apart, the polypropylene chambers are only 38% of the density of concrete, greatly reducing the project’s fuel consumption and carbon emissions.Rebecca Wade, Bid Director at Kier, describes the project’s successes: ‘Thanks to the deployment of agile digital methods and next-generation suppliers, we are delivering efficiently and cost-effectively, whilst respecting our commitments to our society, our community, and our planet.’For more information on how Clark-Drain can help your business deliver robust, cost-effective, environmentally responsible cable access solutions, no matter how big or small your project, get in touch.

FORBO’S MODUL’UP VINYL CREATES WELCOMING MATCH-DAY SPACE A unique hospitality space located in Cardiff’s iconic Principality Stadium, the Riverside Terrace is notable for its move away from the traditional match-day hospitality experience. To create a premium experience, Design and Build Specialists Benchmark Designs called upon Forbo’s adhesive-free sheet vinyl floor covering – Modul’up.  Situated on the banks of the River Taff, the Principality Stadium plays host to a range of events and is renowned as the home of Wales’ Rugby Union team. Working with PSE Wales and Levy UK, Benchmark Designs looked to create a distinctive interior space, capable of offering a premium match-day experience for general admission visitors. Combining a variety of furniture and surfaces with a diverse street food menu, the Riverside Terrace was designed with the city high street in mind, as Hannah Glazier, Interior Designer at Benchmark Designs, explains: “The brief we received for the Riverside Terrace was to take this space and transform it from a traditional food service and interior style, to something with a more up-market feel that had a broad appeal to customers.  “Cardiff’s high street has such a wide range of street food eateries and PSE Wales were keen to incorporate this heritage into the Riverside Terrace, with a different vendor selected to cater each match, along with live music. With such a dynamic environment, we needed products that would complement the usage of the space, providing a practical and refined finish. For this, texture was a really important design element and we wanted to make sure the surfaces we specified would complement and contrast with each other.” With this brief in mind, Hannah looked for flooring solutions that would deliver on the desired aesthetic and feel, stating: “The space itself had a very industrial design, with exposed fixings and a metal-studded bar front adding different textural dynamics. With texture and visual quality in mind, we needed a floor covering that came in neutral shades to match the other finishes, but that could also create a warm and welcoming environment. It was for this reason that we specified Forbo’s Modul’up, in its Concrete and Oak colourways combining the texture and tone of concrete with the warmth of timber.  “The realistic timber appearance of the Oak colourway was ideal for the zoned seating area, while we used the Concrete for the circulation areas, as it nicely matched the design scheme for the walls and bar tops. It was important that we used these complementary colours throughout the entire interior, from wall to floors, lighting to surface tops, helping to create a cohesive and well-rounded space, which feels welcoming yet distinctive.” However, it wasn’t just the aesthetic requirements that were key, but the functionality of the flooring too. Hannah explained: “With a capacity of over 74,000, the Principality Stadium is an extremely busy environment. As such, it was essential that the floor coverings used were able to keep up with the high footfall expected at the venue. This was another reason behind our specification of Modul’up. It has excellent indentation resistance, which was perfect for this space, being able withstand intense usage on match-days. It’s also able to be installed adhesive-free, which made it extremely easy to fit, saving valuable time during the installation phase of the refurbishment.”  She concluded: “Our intention was to create a fun and informal space that was suitable for all demographics to use. We feel we achieved this, with our use of versatile and flexible furniture, wall and floor materials contributing to a relaxed and casual hospitality experience.” Having opened in October 2022, the Riverside Terrace has been put to good use over the 2022 Autumn Nations Series, as well as the 2023 Six Nations, with a PSE spokesperson saying of the new space: “Forbo’s flooring has truly transformed the space, with its exceptional quality, versatile design and hard-wearing nature contributing to a modern and trendy atmosphere. The choice of flooring seamlessly merged functionality with style, making it an ideal option for entry-level hospitality settings. In 2015, Quinn London Ltd started the refurbishment of The Market Building, in Brentford which involved the conversion of Offices to residential dwellings as a ‘Material Change of Use’ project. Soundis provided acoustic solution options for this project, in order to ensure a cost effective Value Engineering Exercise, on behalf of the Main Contractor.As the 1st floor required a deep void system due to new soil pipes and waste pipes having to be installed along the corridor within the building for kitchens and bathrooms, it was agreed to utilise Soundis Cradle & Batten System. This provided a service void for the pipes of 300mm whilst the other areas of the floor were treated with the system at 80mm FFH. The Soundis cradle & batten acoustic floor was then overlaid with a Soundis a high quality, interlocking dry screed system gypsum fibreboard.The Soundis cradle & batten floor system has been installed on the existing concrete and existing timber structural floors to provide a level floor over the un-even sub-deck. The service void provided by Soundis cradle & batten system can be used for other flooring applications, such as underfloor heating.Our Cradle and Risers are manufactured from 100% recycled materials assisting to the sustainability targets of projects.

The Cambridge University Faculty of History required a solution to level the existing flat roofs of the historical Stirling Building. The aim was to create a vibrant and attractive area, mainly used as a throughway, it was paramount that the tiles would match the existing colour of the surrounding building.Our Castlepave GRC Promenade slab (450x450x38mm) was selected, and a custom-made colour was created to blend effectively into the existing architecture. We manufactured various test batches each with a different shade of red, and hand finished aged effect. Once the colour was selected from the various test batches, they were manufactured by hand to the customers specification and delivered to site.We assessed the fall and height tolerances of the roof to determine the number and size of pedestals required to provide a completely level finish. Adjustable Pedestals ranging from 30-120mm,10mm fixed height stackable pedestals, levelling shims, and self-levelling heads were used.The outer row of slabs was cut to size on site, using a circular saw. As shown the results are a flush finish that minimizes the gaps between the slabs and the exterior perimeter. The glass reinforced concrete composition of the slabs mean they are strong and easy to work with on site.The Client was very happy with this stylish and unique finish.

The office “G+P Muller architectes” designed a total of 94 rooms, including classrooms, laboratories, workshops and studios. The Lycée also has its own swimming pool, sports halls and a canteen kitchen with an attached cafeteria. The straight-lined architecture, which uses daylight in a variety of ways and cleverly leads into the building, is captivated by a fresh color concept that takes on an aesthetic and structuring function throughout the building.In order to harmoniously adapt the swimming pool, sanitary areas and canteen kitchen to the color concept, the architects chose two tile series from Villeroy&Boch: PRO ARCHITECTURA and UNIT ONE. In addition to the necessary technical properties for public kitchens and wet areas, the PRO ARCHITECTURA series in particular offers a professional color and format system.For the sanitary area, the architects chose orange, which also appears in the school’s logo, as well as red and white, using several of the system’s modular formats. The swimming pool area is designed around the pool with specially anti-slip tiles from the PRO ARCHITECTURA series. In the surrounding areas, the swimming pool is divided into the colors light and dark gray, which harmonize very well with the concrete elements and the wooden ceiling.

As part of a major transformation of Wembley Park, which includes Olympic Way, Wade Stainless Steel Linear Channels and Streamline, and perforated gratings were installed beneath the Olympic Steps to provide an effective and long-lasting drainage solution.Built by developer Quintain in a joint project with Brent Council, the Olympic Steps come at the end of Olympic Way—the stretch of road linking Wembley underground station to Wembley Stadium. It was named Olympic Way after it was originally constructed for the 1948 London Olympics.The final stages of this redevelopment were the iconic steps that lead up to the national stadium. The original ramp, known as the pedway, was built as part of the old Wembley Stadium and acted as a bridge over the old coach parks. The Olympic Steps development replaced the outdated, concrete pedway and extended the Olympic Way, increasing the width by 50% and improving accessibility for all visitors in and around Wembley Park. Volker Fitzpatrick was the main contractor on the project.“Working closely with Mick Hawkins, the Site Manager, the aim of the project was to fulfil the client’s drainage requirements to tight deadlines,” says Brian Holden-Earl, Area Sales Manager. “The area is frequently used by visitors, so it was important to deliver our services within a specific timescale.”

It consists of a total area of 1200 m2 distributed in different levels.For this application, FOAMGLAS® Tapered T4+ (Slab) was specified and installed on a concrete deck with two high performance bitumen waterproofing membranes.The bedding and porcelain tiles provide the final finish and they will support the large volumes of visitors expected every day.The podium roof at Exhibition Road Quarter will showcase the best of contemporary design, as well as celebrating the beauty of the V&A’s existing building.At the heart of the Architects brief the newly created space is to accommodate the V&A’s headline exhibitions, it will also act as a public area.The Foamglas strength and time tested thermal performance will offer a long term solution to this very important entrance and courtyard.

In 1987 it was the most powerful particle accelerator in the world and led the research in astrophysics. The Atom Smasher was shut down in 2011 and disassembled in 2014.The projectAs part of a comprehensive renovation, Christopher Williams Architects LLC transformed the concrete bunker-like structure into a series of day-lit workspaces. The central building was opened to become a place where scientists, students and experts could interact. This space also hosts events and researchers from around the world. The design brings natural light into the building and emphasizes collaboration through transparency.Products:Surespan designed and manufactured a 2.7m x 4.5m (9ftx15ft) stainless steel flush floor hatch. The floor door has been reinforced to support a live slow-moving wheel load of 17 tons. (FACTA Class E)Due to the weight of the floor door, the hatch is operated via a hydraulic cylinder and an electrically driven power pack. The finished cover uses Sure-Grip anti-slip surface coating.

The design of this bathroom needed to reflect the client’s colourful, modern and eclectic aesthetic, whilst still allowing for a tranquil, restorative space in which to batheHandmade Moroccan concrete tiles by Popham Design in a soft green shade feel serene and natural, but also inject a pop of colour. Elsewhere in the room, design is kept minimal, modern and almost industrial in its simplicity, with a neutral colour palette and brushed nickel tapware. To visually expand the space, the layout of this bathroom was re-designed to make the room feel elongated, and draw the eye in. To complement this, the Moroccan tiles line the floor and furthest wall behind the wet room and back-to-wall Eldon bath.Of the design, designer and stylist Edwina Boase said: “The Eldon bath was perfect for this bathroom; its elegant, modern shape was echoed in the patterned tiles, lighting and tapware. Hotel Café Royal has just undergone a complete refurbishment and internal re-build. Part of the new complex is a state-of-the-art Spa and Gym which is located in the basement. Directly next to the hotel is Regent Street, below which runs the Bakerloo underground train line.Structure-borne noise levels from the trains were far too high to create the relaxing environment required for a top class Spa. The acoustic consultants therefore specified that all of the noise sensitive spaces must be isolated on a Stravifloor Deck concrete floating floor system.Café Royal’s 1,200 sqm Wellbeing Centre provides a personal and intimate holistic experience. It has a large lap pool and four different areas, corresponding to the four natural elements: spa/water, gym/fire, yoga/air and organic bar/earth.The spa offers a variety of Watsu hydro-experiences, a private and communal Hammam and signature Akasha treatments. Moods are enhanced by restorative music, aromas and gentle lighting. The gym has the most advanced fitness equipment, including Kinesis machines. There is a spacious aerobics studio and a private training room. Yoga, Tai-Chi and Pilates are offered in the calming area, with bespoke classes.

As part of cultural regeneration of the Olympia Exhibition Venue, Olympia Central Hall has been demolished and the iconic structures of Olympia National and Olympia Grand, both Grade II listed buildings, are being incorporated into the site’s overall redevelopment. The West Hall Exhibition Space is being structurally strengthened to allow for a two-story music venue to be constructed above the existing exhibition hall.It is necessary to isolate the Central building, originally known as Empire Hall, from the West Hall performance space to prevent music and entertainment noise disturbance.Three massive bearing assemblies comprising solid thick steel plates holding Stravibase VHS bearings, which were pre-compressed using our patented frozen bearing technology.A small mock-up (approx. 1/3 of the size) was also constructed, and fire tested at Liege University, comfortably achieving a two-hour fire rating.Music and entertainment noise breakout from this new venue causing disturbance to residents.A custom designed Stravifloor Deck solution with rubber bearings isolating the concrete roof flab from the structure below. This complex floating roof is laid to multiple falls by using supporting rails that are tapered to suit.

Equinox is a large USA gymnasium operator and their first venture in London is in High Street Kensington. The site they chose is on the 5th floor, directly above Sony Music where Simon Cowell works, and directly beneath Kensington Roof Gardens, which is a popular and very trendy night spot.Ramboll Acoustics specified that a floating floor was required to reduce impact noise levels from the gym to <55dB L’nT,w. However it soon became clear that the floating floor would have to ensure that no significant disturbance was caused to Sony Music directly beneath.Our local branch worked closely with the contractor and consultants to fine-tune the floating floor system and built several mock-ups to verify the performance.The final design consisted of a Stravifloor Channel isolation rail supporting a composite dry floor construction. The floor under Group Fitness, where all of the gym classes are held, also had layers of steel plate to optimise the low frequency performance.The on-site performance at the end of the job was measured as 35dB L’nT,w although this was dominated by background noise as the performance of the floating floor was so good. The improvement from the base concrete floor was 42dB.

The Castle Cove Sailing Club in Weymouth, Dorset, constructed a new terrace area to provide a viewing platform for the sailing events in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.The sailing club required a waterproofing system that could be installed directly to the concrete construction in order for the works to be completed as quickly as possible. It was essential that the system was compatible with timber decking and would provide long-term protection from the elements.The sailing club contacted KG Roofing, their local Polyroof Approved Contractor, to provide a waterproofing solution that could meet the demands of the project. The BBA-Approved Protec System was specified for the works due to its rapid cure times and high waterproofing performance. Timber battens were incorporated into the system to create fixing platforms, creating a striking yet functional support for the timber decking and glass balustrade.With the Protect System affording rapid curing times, the terrace was finished within the desired time-frame, leaving ample time before the beginning of the Olympic Games. The lucky viewers at Castle Cove Sailing Club witnessed many record-breaking performances from Team GB’s sailing team, including Ben Ainslie becoming Britain’s greatest ever Olympic sailor.

A multiphase regeneration project consisting of well over 1,200 new homes, community facilities, and a central park with communal facilities and a soft-play area.The regeneration project started back in 2010, phase 2 saw run between January 2011 and April 2013, phase 3 finished at the end of 2017, phase 4 delivered new homes during the 2nd half of 2018, while the latest phases started in 2019 and complete in 2024.Greenside Landscapes were awarded the Hard & Soft Landscaping at Heathside & Lethbridge in Lewisham, for which we supplied our TerraSmart Rail Paving System to support the rectangular concrete pavers in the communal podium space.The system, which is fully non-combustible, it’s made up of super-strong, 100% recyclable aluminium joists, which overlap to create a lattice framework, offering the maximum possible level of support, especially suited to high trafficked areas.The paving system featured a build-up of approximately 300mm and was perfectly integrated into the soft landscaping and soft play areas. Another example of a similar system deployment, in which we worked again with Greenside Landscapes, was the IKEA Hammersmith roof-terrace project.

Meadow House is a 17 storey, block of flats situated in Coventry. The residential apartment block was built in 1967 and is the second tower block, in Coventry, to be painted using KEIM for its fire-resistant certifications.Similarly to Falkener House, located near Coventry cite centre, this project required a fire-resistant coating and must classify to A2-s1,d0, to meet current building regulations.The applicator, Elhance Limited, who are Leicester based, contacted KEIM to provide a fire-resistant paint. The painted concrete balcony surrounds, and painted brickwork were in relatively good condition. There was general dirt from the urban environment as well as moss and green growth on the surface which required cleaning before any decoration was to take place.KEIM Soldalit-ME was specified due to its A2-s1,d0 fire classification. It is a durable exterior paint that has the added benefit of breaking down organic material and contaminants, which will keep the surfaces cleaners for longer.The facades will not require decoration for another 10-15 years, if not more.A final tower block, also situated in Coventry, has been commissioned to be painted using KEIM Soldalit-ME again due to its fire resistant and durable benefits.

Lindner developed a new glass partition wall in which the glass walls could be installed frameless thanks to grooves in the floor and ceiling. In order to fulfil all fire protection requirements in the various rooms, the doors and glass wall systems were designed in F0, F30 and F90 as required. Another special architectural detail: the wooden door leaves were integrated seamlessly into the glass walls without an additional frame. Silver fir or brass was chosen as the surface finish.These materials can also be found in the wall panelling and built-in furniture, which were manufactured by Lindner Objektdesign in its own factory. Continue reading to discover the entire process of creating a magnificent driveway.After carefully browsing the bespoke PermaBound sample case and inspecting each blend, the customer confidently chose Rivieria as the primary blend and Steel Blue for the border and pathways alongside their house. These beautiful selections were made carefully to ensure they complemented each other whilst enhancing the property's overall aesthetic.The GR Groundworks team started the project by excavating and removing the existing, visibly deteriorating driveway.Once the old surface was cleared, a strong hardcore foundation was established. Block paving edges were then laid to form a step at the front door. On to the hardcore, a concrete sub-base was then laid, offering a solid surface for installing their PermaBound surface. To accommodate the installation of two resin bound gravel blends side-by-side, a durable aluminium edging trim was fixed to the concrete surface, creating a crisp yet discreet separation between the two colours.With the thorough groundwork completed to a high standard, the installation of the PermaBound surface could commence.The team prepared the PermaBound installation perfectly, stacking up each separate mix: four bags of specialist stone, a high-quality PermaBound resin binder and a bag of sand.One member of the GR team managed the mixing process using their SoRoTo forced action mixer. For each mix, they added BoundFast Catalyst to the resin binder to accelerate resin curing times in colder weather. They combined the gravel, catalysed resin binder and KLCP sand in the SoRoTo mixer, ensuring each batch was mixed for precisely the same duration.The mixed PermaBound material was then carefully transferred to a wheelbarrow by another team member, transported to the designated installation area and roughly spread out.The third team member then took the lead, hand-troweling using The Resin Bull's 500LT double-handled trowel to craft a well-compacted and level PermaBound driveway. Included in the scheme is an eight-acre park at the centre, which has proved very popular with the local community.ChallengesThe primary challenge was to achieve a robust waterproofing solution across all areas of the project, ensuring that all key targets of the construction programme, installation, cost efficiencies and client requirements are met.This coupled with ensuring all aspects of the waterproofing package were designed and installed in accordance with the current government legislation, NHBC design guide and industry design guides including BS 6229:2018, requiring all areas to be installed to a design fall no less than 1:80. Due to the roof slab being concrete, the frame required a fall within the structure to remove the requirement for a secondary screed which was simply accommodated across all areas. However, Block E proved a little more difficult due to the curvature of the building.SolutionsThrough review of Axter’s extensive system portfolio and by following our waterproofing ethos of ‘right system, right application’, a mix of three key waterproofing solutions was incorporated within the architectural design specification.Wilotekt-Plus was specified for the central podium as a robust waterproofing system, allowing for regular foot traffic and storage during the construction stage as this was a key area for use with deliveries and access to three of the six blocks. The system was also specified for the main roofs where a fall could be achieved within the concrete slab.Block E proved a little more challenging to create the fall, but Ecoflex ADH PVCp single ply with tapered insulation was more than up to the job. It was installed allowing for a clean, visually attractive aesthetic and the required design falls to achieve drainage.To close out the design and turnkey solution, we also incorporated waterproofing to the exposed car park decks between Blocks D and E and Blocks E and A with R12 rated, BBA certified Starcoat PMMA. Bay marking was easily applied using Starcoat PMMA white roller-applied surfacing.Through close collaboration and partnership with Axtershield Installer NRA Roofing & Flooring, all works were protected under Axter’s Platinum Guarantee, our most comprehensive insurance backed guarantee covering materials, design, workmanship and insolvency. Schools, colleges and campuses with an ever-increasing intake of students often outgrow the buildings originally designed for them. As a consequence, our education sites can consist of increasingly disparate faculty buildings extending far beyond a central hub. These are usually connected by a network of outdoor walkways that get crossed many times a day, in all weathers. Shelter for these walkways is a necessity but innovative designs can offer much more beside.Queensmead is an ambitious school that is committed to seeking the best for all its students. The forward-looking and dynamic co-educational academy to over 1,400 students aged 11-18 was recognised by the Department for Education for being in the top 5% nationally for student progress in 2016.Consisting of 15 detached buildings spread across a large site, access to buildings requires students and staff to cross a number of interconnected covered walkways on a daily basis. When these concrete covered walkways needed replacing, Queensmead sought a cost-effective alternative with the functionality to shelter the network of walkways and the scope to offer increased covered breakout space for the students to meet, eat and relax together. Particular care was required for heating pipes and cables that needed to be protected during the extensive demolition phase and incorporated in to the new design.“We’ve been delighted with the insightful but flexible design process and the speed and efficiency of each installation phase for this complex canopy project. The bespoke product has enabled the evolving project to be completed in phases, with the third and largest phase of the canopy completed over a 5 week period during the 2017 summer holiday.The TRITON canopies are installed with an opaque triple-wall polycarbonate roof system allowing good light transmission without the glare of clear versions. The curved canopy design exceeds the shelter provided by the demolished walkway covers and their extended reach, factored in the designs, has generated significant amounts of sheltered breakout space for Queensmead pupils. Working to time frames factoring in school holidays, disruption for staff and pupils has been kept to a minimum.By identifying the latent potential of their walkways and working closely with our expert designers at Streetspace, Queensmead upgraded their archaic network of concrete walkways with a modern design; bringing cohesion and unity across the site. The inclusion of recessed lights added welcome security and the extended canopy design not only provided improved shade and shelter but year round social space.

The MultiFence PAS 68 can stop a 7.5-tonne truck at both 30mph and 40mph. It has been designed to mitigate the security risks at all sites of critical importance, using leading industry technologies to combat attacks by vehicles.It combines the attributes of our standard system with additional testing to ensure it meets the stringent quality standards relating to vehicle restraint systems of BS EN 1317 Part 2. It can be used on both soft and hard ground.Featuring TVCB blocks approved by the Highways Agency for use, it is ideal for security applications at major events, as below-ground foundations are not required.Our RDS PAS68 crash fence system consists of panels and posts installed and removed within minutes. The system uses an RDS block with the appropriate post arrangement. Our RDS PAS68 fence system has been crash-tested and rated to BSI PAS68:2010 standard. This means it can stop 2.5-tonne and 7.5-tonne vehicles.The system provides the product attributes normally only found in permanent installations. In addition, its simple deployment means the on-site disruption usually associated with installing and removing a fence line is kept to a minimum.Zaun also supplied our HiSec 358 anti-climb mesh fencing to combat the issue of intruders being able to scale the fence.InnovationCPNI and the Government were concerned about the threat of a ladder or other climbing aids used to lean against CCTV columns, making it easier to scale the fencing and gain entry into the secure area.Zaun’s solution was to create a number seven style CCTV column and base, which is completely self-supported and mobile and sits back from the fence line. Zaun’s design team created an innovative CCTV column featuring a unique number seven shape. This design meant the CCTV column would project over and outside the fence line, providing excellent visibility and obliterating the external climbing aid threat. The column was constructed from a custom-rolled, lightweight profile; it was also very easily installed on-site. The unique design also included a concrete base comprising a folded steel shell filled with concrete poured on-site. It incorporated forklift holes, ensuring the base is mobile and relocatable easily using a forklift or Moffatt on site.At the top of the base, a fixing system was designed, which allowed the columns to be attached and pivoted and then subsequently raised into the upright position with ease. This system allowed the CCTV installers to mount their cameras and other equipment to the top of the column at ground level before raising the column into place and negates the need for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms or MEWP’s.Zaun designed and manufactured more than 700 CCTV columns and bases to be used at the Commonwealth Games and are deployable for other events.

GRCA Full member Telling Architecture Ltd demonstrates how innovative 21st Century Modern Methods of Construction can be used to replicate 19th Century, Victorian inspired architecture. The key to authenticity when replicating historic construction methods or styles, is care and attention to detail. Get it wrong and at best you create a poor pastiche of a bygone era. This was the challenge presented to Telling Architectural that required them to develop further the techniques they have already established and utilised in the design and manufacture of brick faced GRC, to create convincing complex 3D forms.This £300 million project nestled between iconic 21st century London landmarks including Tate Modern and The Shard, comprises mixed use buildings that provide offices, shops, gallery restaurant and cinema adjacent to the historic and world-famous food destination Borough Market.This project identifies heavily and sympathetically with its Victorian past. Brick railway arches have been re-purposed to integrate with the facades of retained warehouses in addition to new contemporary architecture that is weaved in amongst connecting pedestrianised yard spaces that creates a refined reimagining of a bygone age.Telling Architectural Ltd continue to innovate and develop the capabilities of Glassfibre Reinforced Concrete. The addition of real brick facings provides the Architect/Specifier with a whole new range of possibilities that they can consider as a means to achieve their creative goals. There is a huge demand for the skills of a brick mason that can replicate the standard of detail and workmanship specific to this project. Unfortunately, as a result of an ageing workforce and low intake of new tradespeople, they are in short supply and come at a premium. The construction industry has had to evolve and adapt to find a solution to this problem, in addition to having to rethink its approach about the way we build. All these issues can be addressed and remedied by introducing off-site/premanufactured innovations that remove key elements off the critical path and in so doing deliver sustainable solutions in an on-time/just-in time basis.In most circumstances the go to solution would be to utilise traditional precast concrete, however using Brick Faced GRC provides significant savings in weight and use of raw material, which in turn can lead to further added benefits in both the extent of groundworks and design of the structural frame.  For Borough Yards London project, the challenge to fabricate masonry elements that include intricate features such as faceted columns utilising cant bricks, splayed sawtooth pattern beams with brick soffit returns, the term masonry cladding falls short in identifying what has been achieved on this project - this is façade engineering of an exceptional standard. Opened in September 2014, Solent Enterprise Zone is home to Fareham College’s Centre of Excellence for Engineering, Manufacturing and Advanced Skills Technology (CEMAST) providing training opportunities for 900 students. It also includes the new Fareham innovation centre providing small workshops and office space for start-up and micro businesses on easy-in, easy-out terms.Around this innovative new build, creative use of hard landscaping was required to enhance the site, to develop and identify areas within the perimeter for pedestrian use, to contribute to safety underfoot on flights of steps and around the bicycle shelter areas as well as providing sustainable urban drainage solutions (SuDS) for the approach to the site and within the car park.In the showpiece location at the approach to the college and inside the grounds around the planted beds and seating areas, Pallas and La Linia block paving have been installed. Also on the approach to the college and around the bicycle shelters, Marshalls Saxon Textured Flag Paving has been specified. Saxon is blended with a hard Yorkstone aggregate to deliver a unique surface finish, whilst the consistency of the textured surface ensures superb durability and non-slip properties. This paving has also been installed on flights of steps within the development, incorporating tactile flags at the top and the base of the steps together with visibility strips for safety and performance. In areas around the car park, Marshalls Priora has been selected. Priora is Marshalls’ original Concrete Block Permeable Paving (CBPP) system, combining the ever popular aesthetics of Keyblok block paving with a sourcecontrol sustainable urban drainage system (SuDS). Priora brings together excellent aesthetics and flood risk mitigation, removing surface water without the need for additional linear drainage systems.Hard landscaping at Fareham College has successfully enhanced the areas surrounding the buildings as well as contributing towards improving aesthetics within the college grounds and promoting pedestrian safety. Use of Priora within the car parking areas has ensured compliance with local building regulations in terms of the installation of naturally permeable surfaces.

Internally and externally waterproofing the below-ground developments of the extended Christian Dior store on New Bond Street, with Newton 403 HydroBond, Newton 107F and Newton System 500.New Bond Street has been one of the most prestigious retail streets in London since it’s 18th Century beginnings, and in 2011 was named as the second most expensive retail street in Europe after the Champs-Élysées in Paris. The Christian Dior name has also been synonymous with haute couture and luxury retail since its own inception in 1947.This project required both the internal and external waterproofing of the extended basement area of Christian Dior’s flagship London store. A significant extension of the existing floor space on this stretch of famous London road, the extensive basement area will be used as stock rooms, changing rooms, and staff and shop floor areas. It was therefore a crucial requirement to achieve a completely dry internal space.The property line construction between two existing buildings meant that there was a requirement for waterproofing both new and existing structural elements, including pile caps, underpinning, a new reinforced concrete slab, existing foundations, and also existing vaulted areas at the front of the building which extend below New Bond Street.Because a completely dry internal environment was required, (defined as Grade 3 by the BS 8102:2009 Code of Practice for The Protection of Below Ground Structures From Water From The Ground) the proposal put forward by design specialists G05, in consultation with Newton, was a combination of Type A and Type C waterproofing systems. Due to the fact that the build was between the flank walls of two existing structures, the Type A system comprised of a combination of the hydrophilic, fully-bonded Newton 403 Hydrobond membrane pre-applied below the new concrete slab, and was linked to the cementitious, flexible Newton 107F membrane, which was applied to the internal faces of the walls and the prepared internal areas of the vaults.Following the application of the Type A system, a Newton System 500 Cavity Drain membrane system (Type C) was applied to the internal wall and floor areas by Newton Specialist Basement Contractor Advanced Preservations Ltd, who also guaranteed the work. The system included perimeter drainage using Newton Basedrain, and two Newton Titan-Pro pumping systems. The under-pavement vaults were lined internally with the Newton 500 system.Not only was continuity achieved with the waterproofing systems across numerous below-ground building mediums and scenarios, but the waterproofing system also conformed to the recommendations of BS 8102:2009 for combined waterproofing protection, where even the slightest form of water ingress is unacceptable.The internal areas were also successful in achieving an environmental Grade 3 with regard to their degree of water tightness, meaning that they will be suitably fit for purpose and use by both Christian Dior’s staff and customers.

Soundsure 560 was laid over concrete blocks (1350 kg/m3 from Lynx Precast), installed as an acoustic resilient layer below insulation, underfloor heating pipework and 75mm sand / cement screed. Installed in first floor areas of all 8 houses. Soundsure 560 was overlaid with 30mm insulation, a waterproof membrane, and underfloor heating pipes clipped into place. A 75mm sand / cement screed was then laid above. Owner: Aberdeen Asset Management Principal Contractor: Cemplas Waterproofing & Concrete Repairs Ltd Main Products Used: EMSEAL SJS systemCemplas has recently completed repair works at the Elmsleigh Shopping Centre in Staines, which included the replacement of deteriorated and failing mechanical movement joints in the service decks. The Centre’s retail units are supplied via ramps to these service decks, which carry the delivery traffic above the stores, plus the decks are also used for car parking, meaning that in addition to being fully exposed to weathering, they are subject to almost continuous dynamic loading from traffic up to and including heavy articulated HGV’s. Unfortunately, despite past attempts at repair and resealing, there had continued to be water ingress through these joints, both into the structure and into the retail units that are directly below, resulting in disruption, damage and cost for everyone involved. The innovative Emseal SJS system that includes integral cover plates, but with no mechanical fixings required, was selected by the Project Engineers as being ideal to accommodate the necessary movement, seal the joints and withstand the traffic loadings. Additionally, as access was only required from the top deck to install the Emseal SJS System, Cemplas was able to carry out the works quickly and keep disruption to an absolute minimum.

REQUIREMENT: Compliant ramped access to the recently built outdoor classroom. END RESULT:The ground in the front of the entrance is split between tarmac and a barked area. The tarmac is slightly higher and solid, whereas the barked area is a soft surface. Due to this, weed membrane was rolled over the barked area, and the ramp feet on that side were fixed to concrete slabs.All legs were adjusted accordingly to achieve a level walkway with a compliant gradient of 1:15.The ramp fully complies with Document K and M of the Building Regulations.FEATURES INCLUDED: Infill Handrail - this product prevents users from climbing or falling through gaps.Telescopic Legs - these can be adjusted to accommodate different threshold heights.Yellow Tread - this is a safety feature designed to help those with impaired vision identify the nose of the ramp and any level changes.Trombone Ends - these are added to the ends of a Rapid Ramp to prevent clothes catching.Mesh Platform - the self-draining mesh allows water to pass through rather than collect on the surface.1100mm High Rail – these handrails attach to any level sections.Continuous Handrail - this handrail system ensures users always have support to hold onto.Standard colour: Black - Ramps are powder coated black to create a durable finish that is tougher than conventional paint.

The award-winning and BREEAM Outstanding Engineering Building at the internationally renowned Lancaster University features a complete range of architectural aluminium glazing systems from Technal. Located on the Lancaster University campus in the North West of England, the new engineering facility was awarded Winner of the RIBA National Award for 2015 and was highly commended by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in the Design through Innovation category at the 2016 RICS North West Awards. Purpose-built to a world-class standard, the scheme comprises of 4,701 sqm of workshop, laboratory and office space in two concrete framed blocks either side of a dramatic four-storey atrium. Using passive techniques to achieve the environmental performance measure of BREEAM 'outstanding' in the design assessment, which is in-line with Lancaster University's sustainability and carbon reduction targets. With this in mind, aluminium doors and curtain walling were chosen for this project. The Facade is featured throughout the building, and was specified for its contemporary aesthetics. The system also includes concealed vents to allow natural ventilation without compromising the architectural integrity of the facade. With natural light being a key part of the specification, Technal aluminium curtain walling allowed larger and heavier glazing units to be installed thanks to its superior load distribution, permitting more natural light to flow through the building's rooms.

A.J Wells manufactured and installed over 600 square metres of vitreous enamel cladding panels for the fourth floor of world renowned department store Harrods.The Knightsbridge store unveiled the new section in November 2013 as part of a £200m makeover. In a radical overhaul the Way In fashion section was converted into a 30,000 square foot “Fashion Lab” with cast concrete floors, crackle-glazed wall panels, steel columns and a metal grid ceiling system. The department houses an array of contemporary brands aimed at the younger market.Working with Found Associates, A.J Wells designed and manufactured the wall panels and the framing system. Vitreous enamel was specified for its durability, low maintenance and luxurious surface finish. A unique satin enamel finish was used with a subtle crackle glaze effect. The panels wrapped the walls of the store and formed counters and cash desk bulkheads. We were recently approached by Lanark Golf Club to help with creating a playable pathway directly in front of the 18th green.The existing pathway, which was finished with a rubber topped concrete tile, was causing several problems. Shots were regularly landing directly on the path and the impact was too severe causing the ball often to bounce unfairly through the green. Also the smooth surface on the existing tiles was causing balls to run excessively to the left of the green following the natural slope of the path. Lastly the existing path was not particularly suitable to play shots off or to run balls across.We worked together to identify the 45mm thick Grassflex Play tiles as a suitable replacement. Testing indicated that the impact of the ball landing directly on the tile was far more comparable to turf than the previous solution, this was due to a combination of natural compression offered by the 45mm thick rubber and the drainage channels underside offering further absorption through the air pockets created. The top surface of the Grassflex Play tile also improved the absorption as well as providing a suitable surface to play a chip shot from and to roll a ball across, the grain of the grass also removed the issue of the ball running excessively to the left.Feedback on the job has been very positive and most importantly it looks good!
