Controlled fresh air and heat recovery ventilation for Hereford Council Leisure Pool

Controlled fresh air and heat recovery ventilation for Hereford Council Leisure Pool

Recotherm Ltd

OverviewHerefordshire Council needed to replace the existing fresh air ventilation unit at Halo Leisure Pool. The unit was old, with several attempts made to improve the pool hall humidity and the unit’s energy efficiency over the years, however it had never worked well.RequirementRecotherm were tasked with creating a bespoke, energy efficient replacement unit. Our engineers worked on various different configurations to utilise heat recovery whilst still maintaining the existing inlet and outlet positions. Avoiding the existing unit’s method of a run-around coil system meant we were able to design and build a bespoke unit that incorporated recirculation, allowing humidity control.SolutionThe existing 20 year old unit was 8m tall, supported by a welded steel frame; utilising scaffolding and reciprocating saws we were able to remove the unit ready for the new installation.A steel table was constructed to take the weight of our new unit, which had been delivered on-site in flat pack form. The entire project took 4 weeks, resulting in an energy efficient, state of the art, swimming pool air handling unit incorporating controlled fresh air and heat recovery via a plate heat exchanger with EC speed-controlled fans.  The council will realise considerable savings on running costs, and importantly much improved conditions in the pool hall with the humidity now under control. Recotherm delivered:Engineering expertiseBespoke designEasy installation with flat pack unitsCertified installersEnergy efficiencyHumidity control

Bradfield College

Bradfield College

Fixfast Ltd

Bradfield College, located in the heart of Berkshire, is a school for 13-18 year olds, providing an 'education for life'.Set up in 1892, the school has its own church as part of the grounds, which has remained closed for a number of years. However, work has been completed recently to connect the church to the school, and convert it into a learning hub for academic purposes - providing students with the space to work individually or collectively to further their learning, preparing them for life in the 21st century.ChallengeNationwide metal & single ply roofing contractors Salmon Solutions provided the solution when it came to the cladding - using elZinc® standing seam cladding in Rainbow Gold to elevate the cladding, giving a sophisticated modern feel to the metal and glass exterior.SolutionTo get a secure fix, Salmon Solutions turned to use Fixfast SPIDI® Max brackets and rails as part of the vertical cladding solution. SPIDI Max brackets are versatile to be used in a wide range of applications, as well as being suitable for horizontal or vertical applications - one bracket for both fixed and sliding points, and available in 3 material grades: aluminium, A2/304 stainless steel, or A4/316 stainless steel."We have a great working relationship with Fixfast and use their products on the majority of our projects. Fixfast - as always - were reliable and efficient with both service and the technical info, which allowed us to incorporate not just their fixings but the SPIDI helping hand system into this project."Charlie Whitman - Salmon Solutions Ltd

SFS helped to develop a compliant specification for a subtropical swimming paradise and restaurant facilities

Longleat Forest Centre Parcs SFS helped to develop a compliant specification for a subtropical swimming paradise and restaurant facilities

SFS Group Fastening Technology Ltd

The Centre Parcs model for all UK locations focuses around a central area housing a subtropical swimming paradise and restaurant facilities. Keeping the central area open without impacting guests was key to this project. A tall order, achieved through meticulous and effective planning. Originally completed in 1994, the existing membrane and glazed rainscreen systems were in need of refurbishment. The brief was to remove the existing glazing and coverings, deck support frame re-modelling and install new insulated deck with simple large expanse blown ETFE roof-lights whilst maintaining unrestricted, safe guest access.Center Parcs and the consultant team were rigorous in their specification of fasteners and method of containing the chlorinated environment of the pool areas. SFS provided all fasteners for deck attachment. Specifically for the pool area this included the TDA-S, TDB-S and TDB, R5 (1.4547) grade stainless steel fasteners for the attachment of the deck and also RV6604-6-4W aluminium rivets for the deck stitching requirements.SFS helped to come up with suitable fastening systems that included R5 grade stainless (EN 1.4547) self tappers to fix the aluminium deck. These were manufactured by SFS, and supplied with certificates of conformity at the request of the client. Super austenitic R5 grade stainless steel fasteners were especially developed for chlorine rich swimming pool environments and are now specified by pool specialists. This is to offset the risk of chlorine induced stress corrosion cracking, a particular type of corrosion that can occur in such environments.

SFS specialist fastening systems were used to secure the striking shingled, multi-coloured, metal façade on the first direct Leeds Arena.Using SFS fasteners resulted in significantly reduced fixing times and helped keep the project on its critical timeline.Comprising of 6,000 square meters of aluminium shingles in five different colours, the cladding was installed in layers onto stainless steel clips and held in place using 35,000 SFS aluminium BULB-TITE® rivets. In addition, 3000 self-drilling SL3/2 fasteners were supplied to fix the perforated, aluminium mesh rainscreen panels to the structural backing wall. 7000 low profile, irius® fasteners were also used to fix Kalzip’s Kal-Plank system, at the rear of the building. The design and construction achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating. The result provides a spectacular display surface for the coloured lighting which transforms the exterior façade at night by reflecting the mood of the concert within. The 13,000 capacity concert venue features an impressive uninterrupted interior construction, designed to allow all seats perfect sight-lines to the stage. The complex 3500 ton steel structure was topped out by a 45 meter long proscenium beam spanning the width of the building.Headed up by Leeds City Council, the £60 million project was completed in 96 weeks and opened in September 2013. This large-scale project featuring 224 bolt-on balconies involved the replacement of composite decking boards on timber joists with BalcaSmart Aluminium decking. We've seen a huge increase in the number of refurbishment projects since the updated Approved Document B came into force along with guidance from the government urging owners of pre-existing buildings to remove combustible materials from balconies if found. This luxury tower was completed in 2014 but with 25 stories, it was a project that came with many challenges.System UsedBalcaSmart Aluminium decking system with aluminium decking boards in RAL 7039 (Quartz Grey).Selected for its low-height build-up, the BalcaSmart Aluminium decking system for balconies was selected, with joists attaching directly to the existing steel balcony frame.Balconies are stacked. To ensure the finish from below was as seamless as that from above, the substructure was powder-coated in RAL 7040 (Window Grey) to match the balcony steels. The ChallengesPre balcony fabrication, our estimating and design team worked with Fletcher Crane architects to create detailed designs, which our team used to create a bespoke specification. As the development was completed in 2014, apartments were occupied, with residents present during refurb works.Furthermore, due to the glass facades and balustrades to the exterior, the goods for the job (including cut-to-length aluminium decking boards) were taken in through the interior of the building and installed as such by London-based Acacia Gardens from Hounslow.Location: ShoreditchCompleted: 2021Architect: Fletcher CraneClient: Private leaseholders

VIEGA LTD

VIEGA’S MEGAPRESS PROVIDES IDEAL SOLUTION FOR THE NEEDS OF THE NATIONAL GALLERYViega’s Megapress connection technology has been specified as the ideal solution for a section of pipe relocation work at The National Gallery in London. The industry-first press connection system for thick-walled steel tube, Megapress, ensured that the installation of steel pipework for the building’s heating and chilled water HVAC systems could take place without disruption to the gallery space which remained open throughout the project. The work was necessary in preparation for a gallery extension which is due to take place in January 2019. Before the building work could take place, it was vital that all pipe routes were relocated, bypassing the location of the extension, so that the other gallery spaces could continue to remain open during the planned building work.Colin Garbutt, Contracts Manager at Capri Mechanical Services Ltd. selected Viega’s Megapress due to the specific range of needs that the gallery space and its displays necessitated. Colin highlighted the difficult circumstances which involved taking the pipework up a riser and across the top of the gallery through a ventilation and services space.“For this installation, speed, cleanliness and minimal noise were key requirements to make sure we did not disrupt the gallery space which remained open below us,” Colin commented. “Hot works were not an option in such an environment and it would have been incredibly difficult for us to get the machinery needed for a screw system into such a tight space. Megapress allowed us to carry out the work quickly, cleanly and efficiently - which was ideal.”

Stauning Whisky’s distillery - gratings

Stauning Whisky’s distillery - gratings

Elefant Gratings T/A PcP Gratings Ltd

A dream comes trueIt all started in 2006 when nine whisky enthusiasts sat down together to devise a plan for realising their dream of transforming their whisky-making hobby in a primitive old slaughterhouse into a new and modern Danish whisky distillery. In 2007, the dream soon became a reality when the project took off in earnest, and the plans were for building the modern distillery, Stauning Whisky, were launched. The ProjectStauning Whisky dreamed of creating a modern distillery where they could make real whisky. Stauning Whiskey chose PcP to provide mesh gratings for the platforms and mezzanine floors, as well as ventilation gratings for the drying halls. Before building work started, construction meetings were held with the building’s owners as well as the architect, consulting engineer and the smith.Design requirementsAs the designated supplier of mesh gratings for the distillery’s platforms, PcP’s specialists advised on the choice of product, solution, material, load and safety requirements and matched the desired criteria from Stauning Whisky. When PcP provides advice, it is important to ensure that the solution meets all the requirements regarding load and safety as well as the customer’s design requirements. Stauning Whisky was very keen that the solution would visually match the rest of the distillery. At construction meetings, all the parties agreed on the best solution, which also took into account Stauning Whisky’s design requirements.Safety requirementsThe height of the distillery was set at 3.2 metres, so safety was a key factor for employees as well as visitors. Therefore, a mesh gratings solution was chosen, which was intended to look like a solid floor. The SolutionIn close cooperation with Stauning Whisky, the architects, engineers and smiths, a unique solution was arrived at which aesthetically complemented the desired visual look while optimising the sense of safety at the height of approx. 3.2 metres. PcP supplied a customised solution with press-locked mesh gratings and steps with cut-outs for copper pipes.Unique designThe mesh gratings were designed and manufactured according to the customer’s wishes and design requirements.PcP tailored the galvanised steel mesh gratings to create a 1,000-square-metre platform and mezzanine level in the distillery, where the whisky is produced in copper pot stills. The combination of different metal types ensured a modern design while at the same time creating an authentic experience of a real whisky distillery for visitors to Stauning Whisky. The galvanised steel platform had to be integrated with the copper still pots in the distillery, while the mesh gratings needed to comply with special mesh size requirements.Unique cut-outs with manual weldsThe PCP mesh gratings are precisely tailored to the distillery. The platform solution comprises mesh gratings which are developed and produced by PcP’s experienced product developers and technical draftsmen. The detailing was carefully executed by PcP’s welders, who made unique cut-outs and manual welds. The bearing bars for the gratings were placed in the opposite direction than standard, and the crossbars were higher than normal. This created a visual impression of a solid steel platform, providing a sense of security for both employees and visitors when moving about at the height of 3.2 metres.Optimum safety and aesthetic designIn close cooperation with Stauning Whisky’s project employees for the building work, effective decisions were arrived at for a unique solution. PcP was responsible for supplying a modern and robust solution with fine details that fully lived up to the customer’s wishes. In addition to its very high strength, the steel platform provides a sense of safety and security for employees and visitors to the distillery.
