Transport for Greater Manchester Cycle Hub

dormakaba UK & Ireland Ltd

A proven specification delivering reliable performance in challenging conditionsAs part of the £6 million Commuter Cycle Project, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) opened a major new cycle hub in the iconic City Tower skyscraper in Manchester’s Piccadilly Gardens. With large footfall expected at the high-profile redevelopment, a proven specification was required to deliver excellent, reliable performance in challenging conditions.dormakaba's contribution to the projectHaving specified dormakaba’s RST automatic space-saver doors at the £4.5 million Middleton Bus Station in 2005 – and with the doors still fully-functional and performing strongly eight years later – Aedas once again turned to dormakaba.dormakaba RST automatic space-saver doors are designed so that the door leaves perform a swivel motion in the smallest of spaces. As a result, the clear passage width is minimally less than the overall structural width of the doorway. And as with all automatic doors from dormakaba, the RST excels in terms of its fast, smooth, quiet operation and user-friendliness.dormakaba was also appointed to supply ED 100 low energy swing doors for two separate exits. Opening the door at precisely controlled speeds and forces, even in tough climatic conditions, the ED 100 assures safety for all users and removes the barrier – ideal when carrying or riding a bicycle upon exit.

Victoria Gate Shopping Centre, Leeds (2017)

Bailey Street Furniture Group

Victoria Gate is one half of Victoria Leeds; a beautiful shopping district, recognised as one the premium shopping destinations in the North of England. The award-winning Victoria Gate opened in October 2016 and is a modern interpretation of Victoria Quarter, paying homage to the surrounding architecture. Victoria Gate brings together brands such as Anthropologie, The White Company and Aspinal of London, in addition to being home to the largest John Lewis store outside London.Artform were asked to supply a mixture of street furniture items to the prestigious city centre development, with the initial specification being produced by ACME Architects, London but the majority of the dialogue and final decision was directly with the client's project management team.Samples of all materials and finishes were supplied, to ensure that the client and team were comfortable with the final proposal and furniture elements. The products specified were the Parc Vue seats, with and without armrests, the Loop cycle stands and the Spencer litter bins, plus in this instance, Artform also provided a full supply and installation service on this project. The traditional seating and cycle stand designs were pivotal in the selection process, ensuring that they integrated with the timeless character of Victoria Gate. The distinctive diamond shaped latticework covering the roof of the complex is echoed in the Parc Vue seat and the Loop cycle stand, making them the perfect addition to complement this impressive architectural structure. The result has encouraged bicycle use and reduced congestion, offering a space for visitors to rest and contemplate, without compromising on the aesthetics of the surrounding structure.

One Great Cumberland Place

One Great Cumberland Place

INTRAsystems

Making an ImpactOne Great Cumberland Place is 5,511m2 of high-grade office and retail space, over 8 floors behind an Art Deco façade. Each of the three entrances receives hundreds of pounding feet every day. The design ambitions here were to maintain and enhance the historic elements; the curved draft lobby, original hardwood, brass details, and marble floors.Water and dirt collection was the major challenge for all entrances. But, in particular, a dedicated entrance leading to 121 bicycle lockers housed in the basement! We’ve worked with Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM) on several projects, so they knew INTRAsystems’ premium Entrance Matting products would be up to the task.Combination inserts deliver with efficiencyIn a busy location with so much coming and going, performance, serviceability and longevity were key. AHMM opted for alternating inserts of INTRAlux® Ultimate 907 Anthracite fibres and Ribbed Rubber. This premium Entrance Mattting combination can withstand heavy wear from tyres, and remove more debris than fibre alone while the INTRAlux® Ultimate inserts offer market-leading moisture absorbency. The Unbeatable Duo of Durability and Luxury in Entrance MattingThe innovative composition of our Ultimate fibre draws off three times more moisture than traditional fibres. And the 900g/m2 density enables faster moisture evaporation, even in busy areas.INTRAflex XT is a popular design choice for outstanding performance, consistency, and adaptability. This open construction variant easily draws off debris and water brought in from the busy London streets while the tough aluminium frame comes with a 10-year warranty and a choice of three finishes. The black anodised finish chosen here is stylish and inconspicuous.Hidden Depths in the Challenging Cycle CorridorThe cycle entrance corridor is 7m x 2.2m, especially designed to welcome heavy bicycle traffic heading down to the subterranean lockers.Wall to wall Entrance Matting runs along the stretch with our unique INTRAmatting Waterlogic drainable system mounted underneath. This 80mm deep tray sits on a screed base and holds up to 75 litres of water per m², perfect to collect water run-off or direct water contact. Its a great hack for this location, since the doors are open to the elements for longer to allow riders to enter and exit the building. The engineered gradient helps to collect dirt and contain or divert water into an optional drainage outlet.Easy Entrance Matting MaintenanceDesigned for extreme performance and built to withstand pretty much anything. We’re so confident in Waterlogic’s durability, we provide a 15-year warranty. What’s above the tray is equally industrious. The heavy-duty INTRAflex XT system is removable to aid maintenance. Facilities teams can clear debris without special tools or training, saving time and money for a busy property.A sensitive and Robust OutcomeAHMM maintained key architectural features of the Art Deco façade in their design scheme. Features like the curved draft lobby, wooden detailing, brass thresholds, and marble floors and motifs.INTRAsystems’ products enabled the installers, LW Flooring, to sensitively and precisely work around them. The entrances contain engineering secrets that deliver exceptional performance to perfectly complement this beautiful building.

Bespoke Premium Amazon Eco Enclosure, Watchmoor Point

Bespoke Premium Amazon Eco Enclosure, Watchmoor Point

The Bike Storage Company

Watchmoor Point is a well-established industrial estate in the heart of Surrey. Epiphany undertook a full warehouse and office refurbishment of the site. As a modern warehouse refurbishment in Camberley, targeting a Net Zero Carbon accreditation, Ephiphany contacted the Bike Storage Company to provide a cycle storage solution for the site to promote active travel intentionally. We partnered to develop a bespoke Amazon Eco Cycle Enclosure that would house over 20 cycles, including E-Bike charging and accessible cycle parking. The shelter, clad in beautiful, Sapele FSC-certified timber, provided cycle parking and contributed to sustainability. The racks used in the shelter were our popular Semi-Vertical Cycle Racks, which makes the most of limited floor space by utilising height. This solution reduced the enclosure's footprint while maintaining storage efficiency, a testament to our commitment to sustainable solutions.Another way to increase the site's net zero accreditation was to include a sedum roof in the shelter. Sedum green roofing involves using low-growing, succulent plants from the Sedum genus on rooftops. Benefits include reducing the urban heat island effect, supporting biodiversity, and enhancing aesthetics. To ensure security and aesthetics, the enclosure's single-leaf timber-clad gate is secured with a Fatemaster mechanical code lock, ensuring that cycles are safe and secure for their stay. Integrated internal PIR lighting ensures the cycle storage is accessible but only lit when needed. Finally, to help identify the cycle storage for employees and site visitors, a laser-cut vinyl bicycle motif was added to the exterior wall of the enclosure. Overall, the result was a beautiful, bespoke cycle enclosure that met the needs of the refurbished industrial units it served.

Laminate Lockers & Z Lockers at 72 Welbeck Street, London

Helmsman

This brand-new sophisticated working environment in London was designed with best-in-class facilities, so it was an honour for Helmsman to be asked to supply the lockers. With the cycle to work scheme fast becoming more popular amongst workplaces, its no surprise that 72 Welbeck Street provided 114 spaces for bicycles, 9 showers and 138 lockers in their luxurious new commuter facilities. It was great to work with Specialist Joinery Group again on this project. In order to optimise the storage for the lockers, the client chose a variety of locker designs, including Z Lockers and 3 Compartment Laminate Lockers.Z Lockers are a great choice as they allow 2 people to store their items in the footprint of one locker and allow hanging of clothes, perfect for those who have cycled to work and are getting changed. While laminate lockers are perfect for a professional heavy duty finish. Both the Z Lockers and Laminate lockers chosen were manufactured from aluminium and stainless steel with Abet Laminate doors in colour Spring White. These materials are designed to withstand a wet environment and so are perfect for the changing rooms at 72 Welbeck Street. The Z Lockers also featured stands with seats, with slats in matching laminate from Abet. All of the lockers were finished with black circle number plates and Lowe and Fletcher camlocks. The bikehangar scheme in Hackney Council

The bikehangar scheme in Hackney Council

Cyclehoop

Our Bikehangar Rentals Scheme was first taken on by the London Borough of Hackney in July 2013.Each Bikehangar provides six spaces to securely store bicycles with each space available for residents to rent. The award-winning design is an effective way to protect bikes from theft and tough weather conditions where outdoor storage space is limited. This made the Bikehangar an ideal solution for Hackney Council to offer its residents, where space is at a premium. The success of the scheme has thrived since it small beginnings. In 2016, we were delighted to mark the 150th Bikehangar to be installed in the borough with a customised unit. The special edition Bikehangar, which provides cycle parking for six bikes – was commissioned by Hackney Council and features a customised design conceived by London street artist Tony Driver. It was great to be able to collaborate with a local street artist on this project. To date, we have installed 308 Bikehangars in the London Borough of Hackney (including Hackney Homes) providing 1,848 secure cycle parking spaces.Hackney Council are eager to become one of the most cycle-friendly boroughs in London, therefore reaching this milestone is something to be incredibly proud of. This is a great reflection of the thriving London cycling culture, with one in six people cycling, and more than half a million journeys made by bike every day. The capital has gained huge momentum in the development of its cycle infrastructure over the past few years, going beyond simply painting blue cycle lanes on busy roads and actually creating fully segregated cycle superhighways. Our Bikehangars dotted around the city are just one example of this hard work.

CorTen Planters for Clockwork Building

CorTen Planters for Clockwork Building

EverEdge

The Clockwork Building was a complete refurb of a 1960/70’s office building, project managed by Thirdway and landscaping done by Belsize Gardens. We became involved in the early stages when Belsize Gardens and the client wanted 4 large Corten planters at the front of the building to give the entrance a more vibrant natural look. All 20 planters were made in total from 3 mm Corten steel with a folded base and a double folded top to give extra strength. In the large planters we also added 4 mm stainless steel bracing wire due to the very large amounts of soil being added to each planter. This stops possible panel movement when the soil is being tipped inside. There were four larger planters all at 60 cm high, two at 11.2 x 3.8 M and two others at 4.5 x 3.2 M. Lighting was designed into all four planters, a bench incorporated into one of the 4.5 M planters as well as a 6 bicycle stand on the most southern planter. The material had to be Corten steel and needed to be pre-rusted which was done in our EverEdge yard in Staffordshire. The supports were our standard buttress design, all at 500 mm centres. Because the back wall of the planters adjacent to the building followed the contours of the building (windows etc) there were no continuous straight lines, but a series of 90°corners. All these fitted neatly on site and resulted on minimum construction time.In addition to the main entrance planters, there were 12 more planters in the car park area, infilled between the building windows all 250 x 55 cm and 88 cm high. These planters, being smaller, were incorporated with our steel brace system.Lastly 4 large planters for the roof garden were also constructed, 150 x 110 cms and 880 cm high as well as one “trough” planter, 250 X 40 cm.

Coventry Shopping Precinct - City of Culture 2021

Coventry Shopping Precinct - City of Culture 2021

BBS Brick and Stone Limited

Coventry is a city of movements; for struggling workers, for women, for political reformers, for ravers, for refugees. The UK's motor city. The UK's bicycle city. A center of the UK's watchmaking trade. A City of Culture that uses its past to forge its future. Coventry Moves! Its Upper Precinct was a very concrete heavy city center, partly because of the style at the time, and partly out of necessity to ensure it could be re-built as quickly as possible after the Blitz damage. The project had access to a partial fund of £7.75 million from the Government’s Local Growth Fund through Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) as part of the overall £11.8 million scheme. The package of works included; the installation of enhanced paving, street furniture, lighting, water features, planting, and the restoration of the historical Levelling Stone monument that was originally placed to commemorate the re-build of Coventry after the 1940-1942 enemy attacks. With the initial removal of the 'big green elevator' and huge concrete, once considered an eyesore, a clear view of the cathedral can now be seen, a view that has not been enjoyed since the 1970s. Almost every design element of this project included natural stone of some sort, making the relationship between the contractor Eurovia, the City Council, and BBS as the supplier, vital to complete each task on time and on budget. The circular shaped 'show stopping' water features created in a combination of both Italian Porphyry and Portuguese buff granite - a place where many people are often seen enjoying the weather. The benches and planters created in Portuguese buff granite, none of which barely had the same two pieces throughout, putting the pressure on BBS to individually CAD each and every one. The project covering the entirety of the Upper Precinct and continuing on Market Way, and Smithfield way, saw the complete removal of everything in situ and replaced with an unrecognizable scenery. All in time for Coventry Moves the City of Culture event.

IAE

Cycle storage for new industrial units and office spaceAs part of a new development near Bristol, which included 4 new industrial units set for various uses, IAE Shelter Division supplied a series of Circonomy Cycle Shelters to provide dry and secure cycle storage, with the aim of encouraging more cycle use on the daily commute. The industrial units varied in size and included manufacturing, warehousing, and office space. As the units varied in size, each unit required a different number of cycle spaces. This is both for practical purposes, and to ensure the development meets BREEAM guidelines, which require a certain amount of dry, secure cycle storage spaces, depending on the number of people occupying the building, and the size of the building.Extendable Modular DesignThe Circonomy Cycle Shelters modular design meant it was ideal to meet these requirements. An individual Circonomy Cycle shelter fits 5 cycle hoops and is suitable to securely store 10 bicycles. Extensions can be added to the end of the shelter to increase capacity as needed. Individual shelter units, cycle hoops and extensions are all available from stock at IAE Shelters. The modular design meant the same style of shelter could be used across all the different sized units on the development to provide a consistent look across the site.Low Impact StylingBREEAM guidelines also state that the cycle storage has to be in a prominent, easy to access location to encourage cycle use, and not hidden around the back of the unit to hide it from site. The low impact styling of the Cicrconomy Cycle Shelter provides an unobtrusive look and means the shelter can be easily dropped into a site layout without concerns about it affecting the overall look of the project. To finish the design, the galvanised frames were powder coated anthracite grey to give a contemporary look.Specifying IAE SheltersThe Circonomy Cycle Shelter is IAE's most popular shelter, with hundreds installed around the country. This made the Bikehangar an ideal solution for Lambeth Council to offer its residents, most of who live in small flats where space is at a premium. The success of the scheme over the years has resulted in a further 200 Bikehangars being installed throughout the borough (as of July 2016) providing 1,200 secure cycle parking spaces. The success of the Bikehangar scheme in Lambeth and the increasing demand for on-street cycle parking from residents of other boroughs have seen our Bikehangars installed throughout the UK. Cyclehoop currently works with 75 councils UK wide, having produced over 2,000 Bikehangars providing a total of 12,000 secure cycle parking spaces.“The Bikehangar scheme has been a great addition to Lambeth streets. It is a much-cherished council service, popularity of which greatly exceeded our expectations. Almost every hangar we installed is oversubscribed and we cannot keep up with the demand to install additional units. The convenience, safety and reliability of this cycle parking solution has been demonstrated by popularity of the 220 units installed throughout the borough to date, the very low damage and vandalism rate and none reported bike theft. Local Police, councillors and residents are all in love with Lambeth Bikehangars. It has proven to be a crucial service in enabling our residents to use a cycle as their transport mode.” – Pawel Ryczan, Cycle Parking Project Manager, Lambeth Council“The service offered by Cyclehoop was not only efficient and professional but the whole experience was personable and friendly. We are so grateful for our Bikehangar as the area is not safe for leaving bikes outside and we don’t have a lift so it has been so much hassle keeping two bikes inside the flat. The service we received has been exceptional and there’s a real sense of customer care that is very hard to come by. 10/10.”– Bikehangar Rental Scheme Customer, London

Heated Z Lockers at BT Bristol

Heated Z Lockers at BT Bristol

Helmsman

As a part of the development of the company, BT are planning to reduce their number of working locations from over 300 to just 30. BT Bristol features flexible workspaces, the latest IT and smart building technology, restaurants and cafes and a rooftop wildflower meadow terrace with panoramic views of Bristol. An important aspect of the development of this new building was its eco credentials. With the whole company seeking to reduce its carbon emissions, choices were made throughout the design and build process to support this aim. As well as the rooftop meadow, the building features a heating system from the low-carbon district heating network and aspects that encourage employees to make greener choices about their travel to and from work. In order to support this, the BT Bristol office building features parking for around 270 bicycles, as well as changing rooms, showers and lockers.Helmsman were excited to be contacted by Honeyfield Property Services to supply and install the lockers at BT Bristol. The client requested Heated Z Lockers, with hasp locks for the user to attach their own padlock.Heated Lockers are a great addition to a cycle storage area, providing a storage solution that can dry damp clothes as well as keep your items safe during the working day.The Z shape is a particularly good choice for heated lockers, as the user can hang their clothing in the taller area of the locker and let the heated locker do the hard work.Air flows through the locker through a perforated base, and perforations at the top of the locker allow the damp air to escape. The tube heaters are positioned within the stands of the locker and can be either plugged into a 3-pin power socket or wired into a fused switch. In keeping with BT Bristol’s aim for carbon efficiency, the laminate used for the project was Graphite by BioCarbon Laminates. This is one of Helmsman’s standard laminate options, and is a carbon neutral material. In addition to the lockers, we also supplied and installed seat stands, with adjustable feet, and ash hardwood seat slats. The stands, back and sides of the lockers were all cladded with matching Graphite laminate, and the lockers were finished with black circle discs with white numbering. It was great to work with Honeyfield Property Services on this project, and wish the BT Bristol office much success in the future. If you have a similar project, or want to find out more about our Heated Lockers, give us a call on 01284 530427 or fill in our contact form here.

Falco Installs Over 90 Secure Cycle Parking Spaces for Candleriggs Square in Glasgow – a New £300 Million Transformation of one of the City’s Most Prominent Development Sites

Falco UK Ltd

This month, Falco supplied and installed over 90 spaces of the FalcoLevel-Eco two-tier cycle rack, for what will become Scotland’s largest hotel, located on Drum’s Candlerigg’s Square site in the heart of Glasgow’s historic Merchant City. The new £300m development, will transform Glasgow’s original flourishing fruit and vegetable market which has lay neglected and unused for 20 years, becoming a derelict site in an otherwise vibrant and thriving neighbourhood. Candleriggs Square, bound by Wilson Street, Hutcheson Street, Candleriggs and Trongate is regarded as the last and most significant piece of the Merchant City regeneration jigsaw and will provide a vibrant mixed-use community bringing together new homes, offices, hotels and local amenities. As part of the state-of-the-art development, a requirement for secure, easy to use, cycle parking for over 90 cycles was required, to be located within an accessible, underground facility.Falco manufactured, supplied and installed a series of over 90 double-sided FalcoLevel-Eco two-tier cycle parking spaces within an underground facility at the prestigious development, providing employees and visitors with secure and accessible cycle parking. The popular FalcoLevel-Eco design was chosen for its capability to be located within compact areas, such as the underground facility shown here, providing cyclists with twice as many cycle parking spaces that would have otherwise been available when using traditional cycle racks and stands.Double-sided variations of the popular cycle rack were used to fit inconspicuous within the tight constraints of the space envelope available. The recent installation shown here at Candleriggs Square is just one of many underground environments Falco has supplied and installed cycle parking equipment for. Other recent examples include two-tier cycle parking for Macquarie Bank in London, three flagship Selfridges stores across the UK, VelowUp® vertical cycle stands and two-tier cycle racks for the University of Edinburgh, 150 two-tier cycle rack spaces for Marks & Spencer at Paddington Basin in London as well as semi-vertical cycle parking for Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.The FalcoLevel-Eco is a high density and budget friendly two-tier cycle parking system which accommodates twice the number of bicycles compared to any other traditional cycle rack or stand. The FalcoLevel two-tier series is the UK’s best-selling high density cycle rack and is used at the UK’s first ever cycle hub at Leeds City Station as well as the UK’s two largest cycle hubs at Cambridge and Chelmsford Stations. For more information about the FalcoLevel-Eco cycle parking system or how Falco can assist your cycle parking scheme, please contact our helpful sales team on 01538 380080.
