Power Grab ‘n’ Bond for Installing External Showroom Signage Without Mechanical Fixings

C-TEC

Case Study – Power Grab ‘n’ Bond Customer: Signal Signs – OmaghProject: Pat Kirk Car Showroom, Strabane Power Grab ‘n’ Bond Eliminates the Need for Mechanical Fixings!Mechanical fixings on bright, new external facades can be ugly and distracting, especially when being installed at the entrance of Pat Kirk Motors stunning new car showroom in Strabane, Northern Ireland. With clean lines and seamless transitions throughout the building, mechanical fixings where exactly what the architect DID NOT want. This was the challenge presented to Michael from specialist installers McLaughlin Joinery who were tasked with fabricating the entrance and installing the façade design created by Signal Signs on extra-large 1500x3000mm sheets of Dibond® aluminium composite metal panels. A Stickler for Quality!Being a real stickler for quality and perfection Michael McLaughlin believes in always using the best materials, tools and brands to ensure the best, most durable and superior finish on his projects. He immediately sourced Power Grab ‘n’ Bond as he knew it is the best construction adhesive in the market, with excellent initial grab and exceptional tensile and sheer strength. Guaranteed to adhere to metal, wood and concrete substrates it totally eliminates the need for additional mechanical fixings. Power Grab ‘n’ Bond is developed by leading British manufacturers CT1, the No1 sealant and adhesive in the UK. CT1 is always leading and providing the industry with the very latest technology. Now thanks to its unique ‘Tribrid®’ technology Power Grab ‘n’ Bond is a revolutionary product in the field of heavy-duty versatile bonding. Why Choose Power Grab ‘n’ Bond?Working with large Dibond® metal 1500x3000mm panels being installed at height in an external environment Michael and his team needed a solution that would grab, hold and act instantly without needing to be braced and supported. With incredible initial grab, Power Grab ‘n’ Bond is a fast curing, non-shrinking and almost odourless adhesive that held the metal sheets with immediate effect.Three times stronger than regular hybrid polymers, the ‘Tribrid®’ technology in Power Grab n Bond ensures a phenomenal final tensile strength of 22kg/cm2, yet remains flexible, won’t dry out nor become brittle and will work effectively in temperatures ranging from 90°C right down to the Baltic cold -40°C.In fact, not only does Power Grab ‘n’ Bond successfully stick Dibond® to wood and concrete it will adhere to all metals (including lead), stone, granite, ytong, marble, MDF, fiberglass, glass, polystyrene, mirrors and most plastics (except PP, PE and PTFE).Creating a Superior Mechanical Fixing Free FinishUsing a heavy-duty caulking gun, Michael applied Power Grab ‘n’ Bond straight from the cartridge, onto the back of the Dibond® Sheets, allowing it to rest for 4-5minutes to begin activating, before fixing them directly into place.Originally created for facades and heavy stonework such as the installation of quoins, the versatility, strength and reliability of Power Grab ‘n’ Bond means it now used more widely by professional shop fit out companies as well as specialist trades, landscapers, kitchen fitters and bathroom installers. It is tested by a UKAS Accredited lab to BS EN 12003 (Determination of shear adhesion strength of reaction resin adhesives) and BS EN1308 (Determination of slip resistance).Power Grab ‘n’ Bond provided the perfect solution as it’s the ultimate grab adhesive, eliminating the use of mechanical fixings completely and coupled with the rapid curing characteristics saved a lot of additional labour time and cost.Michael said;“The result is exactly what the architect and client wanted, a stunning external façade, with no unattractive mechanical fixings, that not only makes a statement entrance but creates a stunning backdrop for promo photos of new cars too.”Grab also ‘n’ Bond is made in Britain with British technology and British design. Verulam School

Verulam School

Boyco (UK) Ltd

When a major blaze swept through the sports pavilion at Verulam School in St. Albans, only one thing was left standing in the changing rooms - the Boyco fittings. Even after the roof had fallen in and flames had gutted the changing block, the Boyco benches and peg rails were still firmly in place. The suspected arson attack at the Sandy Pit Lane site caused extensive damage and the entire pavilion needed rebuilding. As a fire fighter at the scene explained "The pavilion was made of wood and concrete with a tar and bitumen roof so it was pretty flammable".Rebuilding the pavilion had to begin straight away to restore full sports facilities to the school. Boyco was asked to join architects Mouchel on the team tasked with building and fitting out new changing rooms – nine years after they designed and supplied the original fittings. Boyco and Mouchel already had a proven partnership having worked together on numerous projects in the past. The timescale was tight. The Boyco team had just a month to present full proposals and design and manufacture the fittings. The team’s made-to-measure design – a replication of the original one - incorporated benches with integral peg rails and shoe trays. The steel fittings were coated in-house at the Boyco factory using the company’s renowned ‘Hot-dip’ nylon technique, exclusive in this sector to Boyco. The coating, derived from 100% renewable castor oil, is four times thicker than other powder coatings and gives fittings superior durability and performance. ‘Hot-dip’ coated fittings offer astonishing resistance to damage, abrasion and, as Verulam School proved, fire. The surface is also exceptionally hygienic with anti-microbial power that reduces bacteria by 99.99%. For added visual impact, ‘Hot-dip’ designs come in wide range of colours. Timber parts of the fittings also bring together superb performance with impressive environmental credentials. Water-borne timber lacquers provide a high quality finish on our standard American White Ash which are non-toxic, anti-microbial and non-flammable. All timbers are sourced from sustainable, fully approved forests.

One Albert Quay - harnessing the power of IoT to deliver Ireland's smartest building

Johnson Controls

Project overviewOne Albert Quay in Cork, Ireland is Johnson Controls’  global headquarters. A new construction on previously derelict ground, it is designed to demonstrate the full range of possibilities smart, connected Internet of Things (IoT) technology can offer across the security, fire prevention, HVAC, building management and facilities management spectrum. Innovative, integrated technologies, which govern everything from security of access systems to the menu of the in-house restaurant, are deployed across the building’s 170,000 square feet. Making the most of the available data, the IoT systems work in conjunction with each other to provide employees and building visitors with improved health and safety, streamlined building access and real-time updates on key matters including local traffic, parking spaces, lunch menus and room bookings. One Albert Quay points to a smarter future in which connected devices and data gathering will revolutionise routine tasks and provide helpful efficiencies and services. The Grade A building has also brought new opportunity and investment to the city of Cork. Johnson Controls is on track to build a 500-person workforce and One Albert Quay also plays host to a number of major international companies including PWC, Investec, Arup Engineering, Malware Bytes and Hortonworks helping to boost Cork centre’s reputation as an international business hub. Designed to Gold LEED standard, the building is widely known for embracing new technology to benefit its occupants and the environment. This would include the implementation at construction level of energy saving insulation, rainwater collection, automatic power use management and sustainably-sourced building materials. Almost a fifth (18 per cent) of total UK carbon emissions come from non-domestic buildings. One Albert Quay needed to send a message that office buildings can be a part of the solution rather than the problem.Once constructed, the building needed to incorporate IoT systems to process and connect data from access management, CCTV, lifts, room reservations and traffic movement, in order to improve facility management and security capabilities. It was also essential to ensure that data was stored securely to avoid the danger of an information breach.  OpenBlue technology deliver optimised space utilisation through data insights from the building, energy audit and advisory brings recommendations and through measurement, monitoring and evaluation demonstrates progress towards carbon emissions and net zero goals. The designers also aimed to provide the best possible employee experience for those working in the building. This would include installing IoT-based information-gathering capabilities to monitor employee transport methods, parking, progress through the building, restaurant purchases and energy use. Finally, these systems had to drive a real-time update service providing employees with information on every aspect of the building and the immediate surrounding area. This in turn would help them plan their day and maximise resources - for example, by helping them avoid arriving at the building’s car park when it is already full.Johnson Controls solutionJohnson Controls delivered Ireland’s smartest building in a rapid 16 months from breaking ground to completion.“When we decided to develop Ireland’s smartest building, Johnson Controls was the obvious partner,” commented Martin O’Brien, project manager at John Cleary Developers Group. “Johnson Controls’ unrivalled expertise in fire and security, along with their new breed of connected systems and IoT platforms, meant that our building was both future proof and a pioneer in integrated systems. Our tenants, a mixture of tech and financial companies, all feel like One Albert Quay is a perfect fit for their business needs.”“As one of the world’s leading engineering and design consultancies, Arup aims to shape a better world. Choosing to locate our office in Cork at One Albert Quay, the smartest building in Ireland, created the opportunity for us to be part of an exemplar development,” Liam Luddy, director Arup Engineering. “At One Albert Quay we have a smart and energy efficient environment. This enables our staff to deliver to their full potential while realising their individual ambitions as we deliver innovative and creative solutions for our clients.”One Albert Quay is highly energy efficient, and was certified Gold under the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) scheme. The accreditation dictates that at least a 36 per cent saving must be achieved in energy-related operating costs across the building. To reach this target, Johnson Controls installed rainwater harvesting and treatment facilities, highly efficient solar-reflective external glazing, LED lighting with lux-level sensors throughout and solar thermal collectors to pump natural heat into the building. The development also has a glazed central atrium which brings light into the centre of the building, reducing the need for artificial lighting. Internally, the building’s advanced integration of a wide range of Johnson Controls and Johnson Controls IoT solutions means that access management, CCTV, lifts, room booking and payment systems are all linked to one another, giving managers a single comprehensive view over the whole facility. As an example, when someone enters the building, the AC2000 Linux-based access management system identifies which floor they are booked to visit and, in tandem with Schindler’s smart lifts, directs them to the lift which will get there first, saving on time and energy. Once arrived at that floor, the system will only let them into meeting rooms for which they have been pre-approved, reducing the risk of information breaches. The car park also has number plate recognition technology installed to ensure that only employees or registered guests can gain access. The building’s stairways, corridors and wider floors also have capabilities to provide information on employee health and flow through the building to help inform items such as restaurant meals based on accumulative activity levels. The restaurant operates a cashless system, providing transaction data to aid in development of menu options. In addition, these information discovery practices allow management to ensure evacuation procedures are safe and effective and improve the use of office space throughout the building. This has helped boost flexible working habits, as employees can now be pre-warned when their floor is particularly busy, and helped to find desk space elsewhere. All the information collected is anonymised before processing and storage to ensure the highest level of security and privacy, and employees can choose to opt-in to specific programmes involving data collection for research and development purposes. The system’s integrated, unified architecture points to the future of office block management, when central intelligence will manage all companies in the building from one dashboard. However, tenants’ systems are kept segregated behind separate firewalls to ensure internal privacy.‘We’re extremely proud of the way in which the One Albert Quay development demonstrates the impact of integrated, connected technology for security and facilities management,’ said Donal Sullivan, vice president and general manager at Johnson Controls. ‘We believe that this is not only an exciting development for Tyco, providing an advanced global headquarters from which to manage the company’s recent merger with Johnson Controls, but also for businesses at large looking forward to the future of working environments. By integrating access, fire and security systems with innovative new data-gathering techniques and site management tools, businesses can massively reduce their administration costs, save on energy and improve employee experience. Connected technology is here to stay, and as One Albert Quay proves, it is the key to a highly efficient and stimulating business environment.’

Parmareggio Group (Industrial - Latitude)

Parmareggio Group (Industrial - Latitude)

Hochiki Europe (UK) Ltd

In 1959, eight dairies in the Parmigiano Reggiano area founded the CCS Consorzio Caseifici Sociali. Over the years, the has business expanded to include the production and maturing of Parmigiano Reggiano. In 1995, the Granterre Consortium was established, bringing together the entire Parmigiano Reggiano dairy chain, and then almost ten years later, in 2004, control of Parmareggio Spa was acquired. In 2019 Bonterre Spa, the holding company under which the control of Parmareggio Spa and Grandi Salumifici Italiani Spa (controlled by UNIBON) was established. Then in 2021, Agriform Sca (leader in the production of Grana Padano PDO and the main Veneto PDOs such as Asiago, Piave, Montasio and Monte Veronese) merged with Parmareggio Spa to create the first Italian company in the world of PDO cheeses and cemented this new company as the leader in the Italian food industry. In 2021, the site at Sommacampagna required an upgrade of the fire detection system. Hochiki were the appointed manufacturers to supply the life safety system and devices due to their experience and expertise in the Italian fire safety market. Within food production sites, the temperature and humidity inside the environment must be carefully controlled to comply with food hygiene laws, and because of this, these sites can be notoriously complex buildings to design and install fire safety systems for. The customer was looking for a high-performance fire detection system that would not be affected by these environmental factors, and most importantly avoid false alarms which can halt production and cost the company thousands of Euros for every minute the site is not fully operational. The installation team also needed to pay particular attention to the installation of cables and piping. As a specialist in aged cheese production, it was imperative that the delicate work of the cheese wheels and the hot marking of the upper layer of the Parmesan rind was not affected during the installation project. One of the benefits to Hochiki products to this project was the ease of install and ease of use of the devices which had minimal impact on the business. To meet the requirements of the project, the installer NET Technologies Srl chose Hochiki’s market leading system Latitude to be the brain of the life safety system. This innovative fire detection technology combines the very latest hardware and software to produce a control and indication system which is powerful and sophisticated, yet simple to use and understand via a graphical interface. Mirko Corsini, project manager at Hochiki Italia, said: "The installer chose Hochiki’s L@titude panel together with our SPC-ET beam smoke detectors, which are characterised by low power consumption at rest and incorporate a sophisticated algorithm of automatic compensation to environmental changes. The technical features of these products make them perfect for meeting the needs of this type of food processing environment. The flexibility of the ESP protocol made it possible, through the CHQ-SZM2/SCI Zone Modules, to integrate conventional detectors (SPC-ET) as if they were addressable devices, without having to use auxiliary power supplies that would have required additional cables and batteries." Detectors with short circuit isolators were installed to ensure the system complied with the requirements of UNI EN 9795, which states that a short-circuit isolator must be installed for each room/compartment. Intelligent Photoelectric Smoke detector with SCI incorporates Hochiki's newest High Performance Chamber Technology. This detector removes the need to use Ionisation Smoke Sensors in many applications. This also allows the sensor threshold level to be increased, thereby improving the signal to noise ratio, and reducing the likelihood of false alarms. Throughout the site Intelligent Loop-Powered Wall Sounder Beacons and Visual Alarm Devices were installed to ensure a fully compliant and state of the art fire safety system. Commenting on the project, Fabrizio Bergamin, Technical Coordinator at the installer company, NET Technologies srl, said: "We chose Hochiki devices and system because of the technical characteristics and reliability that this brand offers, as well as a wide range of products that fully meet market demands. Post commissioning of the project, the operating conditions envisaged in the design phase have been amply met. Over the course of the next year, there will be further implementations of the fire detection system at the Parmareggio production site, with distributed intelligence solutions or with several autonomous and networked Latitude control panels. During the project we have had to deal with several technical design studios to solve various kinds of system problems; a fundamental role, together with the products they offer, is played by the Hochiki Italia technical support. They have responded competently to regulatory and design aspects, as well as proposed solutions for particular applications".

Johnson Controls

The ChallengeThe fire risk within airports is amplified by the need to ensure the safe mass evacuation of people who could be exposed to the primary danger of smoke and toxic fumes that are difficult to vent in a controlled way within airport terminals. With these factors in mind, Johnson Controls has developed a well proven Integrated Risk Management Approach to protect vulnerable areas within airport terminals, aircraft hangars and airport building infrastructures from the threat of fire. With the addition of integrated security and safety systems, our approach has been developed from a wealth of experience gained by protecting over 350 civil, and military airport and aviation facilities over a 50 year period.Having worked in partnership with the Airport Authorities and their specialised construction groups on every major turnkey airport project throughout the world, there is no imaginable fire, safety and security risk within this market sector we have not encountered and neutralised. It is therefore hardly surprising that Johnson Controls is a preferred supplier with a proven track record for providing an Integrated Risk Management Approach that can integrate over 20 different types of system within nine disciplines to meet the varied and individual needs of the airport and aviation industry.Product and SolutionsDoorsFire detection & alarmFire extinguishersFoam extinguishing systemsGaseous fire suppression systemsKitchen fire suppression systemsMicroDrop® high pressure water mist systemsSprinkler systemsService & maintenance Fire protection projects within AirportsSprinkler life safety systemsWe have installed these systems in public areas, retail shops and executive lounges within major international airports.
