SolarVision Lighting Technologies

ChallengeCALA Homes are a major developer in the UK delivering in excess of 3000 units a year and have regional offices all over the UK. With their sustainability policy in mind CALA's development at Kingsmere located in the popular town of Bicester. They had an area of the development that provided parking for their new homes and this needed lighting, unfortunately there was insufficient infrastructure in this area location.SolutionCALA contacted SolarVision Lighting Technologies to provide them with a lighting solution. There was no desire to install a traditional mains connected solution due to the disruption it would cause. SVLT provided CALA with a lighting design and installed our Astral Solar Street Lights, which would ensure minimal disruption and cause no damage to the roads and footpaths. To ensure health and safety compliance, we conducted a GPR survey to ensure no obstruction or unknown services were present, surveyed the proposed location to ensure we established the maximum solar energy yield and provide correct displacement of lighting across the car park. SVLT provided CALA with a full solution from design to fully installed. Our solution was totally non-invasive, with our Astral Solar Street Lights proving to be a very cost effective solution. The installation took one day and the lights were operational that night. The lighting profile was set at 4 hours at 60% in line with CALA's request. From dusk and then dimming to 10% until dawn increasing back up to 60% when triggered by the sensor.OutcomeCALA Homes had a lit car park area around their homes within one day, with no requirement for for additional infrastructure and no future cost for electricity to their residence.CO₂ SavingsOver 25 years this project will have saved our atmosphere 4.6 tonnes of CO₂.Organisation: CALA HomesInstalled: ASTRAL Lighting Columns

SolarVision Lighting Technologies

ChallengeAt Cala’s development at Mistley, they had a footpath that required lighting and is to clear their planning condition the lights needed to be bollards. SolutionDue to their previous experience with our HELIA Solar bollard, Cala came directly to Solar Vision Lighting Technologies (SVLT), placing an order for 18 HELIA bollards which they knew would satisfy their planning condition. In order to eliminate the requirement for a GPR Survey they elected to supply the concrete pads for the 18 bollards. OutcomeThe concrete pads were installed prior to our arrival. SVLT came to site and were able to bolt the HELIA bollard to the pre-installed concrete pads and the lights were installed and operational all within one day. Organisation: CALA HomesInstalled: HELIA Lighting Bollards

Dorma Variflex Semi Automatic Acoustic moveable wall - etc.venues facility, London

Style - Moveable Partition Specialists

Having previously divided the 1st floor conference facility when etc.venues initially moved into 155 Bishopsgate, London, Style was asked to add further space flexibility when the company recently expanded into the sizeable 2nd floor area.Working with Synergy Architects, and contractor, KPS Partnership Style recommended installing a single, 21 metre long Dorma Huppe Variflex moveable wall down the length of the main conference space. A further five Variflex walls were then installed evenly spaced throughout the room, allowing individual meeting rooms to be created as demand dictates.Maintaining natural light throughout the space, pass-doors are all fully glazed, with an adjacent panel also being fully glazed in each instance. For added wow factor, solid panels feature eye-catching graphics.“We have worked with etc.venues several times before,” said Michael Porter, Style’s group sales director, “and it is a privilege to continue being involved in creating market leading meeting, event and exhibition space that offers users outstanding flexibility.etc.venues’ mission is to rescue people from the tyranny of dull meeting venues by inspiring them with vibrant design and contemporary art, offering fresh and carefully sourced food, coupled with award-winning hospitality.155 Bishopsgate has established itself as one of The City’s most stylish conference destinations and one of the largest too, with a total capacity across the two floors exceeding 1,000 guests. The new Variflex moveable wall arrangement enables etc.venues to host an extensive combination of meetings by closing off each area into smaller meeting rooms, opening up multiple rooms into one larger meeting area or moving all walls away to create a vast open plan conference/exhibition space. With Style prioritising acoustic integrity throughout the installation process, coupled with semi-automatic operation that ensures the seals between the panels are expanded to exactly the right pressure every time, a 52dB Rw acoustic rating is achieved, delivering complete privacy between divided areas.

Type 100SE and Type G100 Combination - Taunton School

London Wall Design Ltd

Based in Somerset, Taunton School was founded all the way back in 1847. While the building’s stunning exterior has been immaculately preserved in the years since, the interior has of course been routinely upgraded during that time in order to support the ever-evolving demands of educational environments – including the recent installation of our Type G100 movable wall system.Type G100 is a glazed partition system that provides effective protection again sound transfer when fully closed, achieving up to Rw 54dB. This particular system is comprised of 10 panels, with half being glass and the other half sporting a solid matte black finish – all housed within a sleek black painted aluminium frame. Thanks to the Type G100, the school’s cafeteria layout can changed within minutes, offering the choice between a large open plan space, or a pair of smaller rooms. A fully solid system would not allow for the transfer of natural light to the smaller of the two spaces created when the system is in use, however the glazed panels mean this is not an issue. A pass door also allows for access between the smaller spaces when the panels are being used.

Vario by VELUX - Country Kitchen Extension Transformed with Natural Light

Vario by VELUX - Country Kitchen Extension Transformed with Natural Light

VELUX Company Ltd

We met digital content creator and charity ambassador Sally, in her gorgeous detached house in the English countryside in Surrey. Sally, her husband Gav, their three sons, dog and cat live in a beautiful cottage with lots of outdoor space for football, dens and four chickens (all named Barbara). They’re an active, outdoorsy family who love embracing nature, from scuba diving to surfing Cornwall’s finest beaches.Over the years they have built two extensions to their house. In the most recent extension project, Sally chose to illuminate the end of her gorgeous country kitchen/diner with a Vario by VELUX bespoke rectangular rooflight, so we went to visit her for a cuppa and a lovely chat about her impressions and experience on the importance of daylight. Sally, what a bright and stunning space you have in here. Could you please tell us more about your extension project?"We love this house; it has plenty of space and we absolutely love the country lifestyle. We bought a house 12 years ago and that time it was much smaller. The first big extension we did was 9 years ago, but we didn't quite get what we wanted as the building restrictions at the time were very strict. The key thing for us was to bring the light in. A wall of glass made perfect sense, but as the extension has a flat roof, we also started to think about what was above. In a room like this, I think the roof should be seen as the fifth wall.”Your original plan was to put a glass lantern in the extension. What made you change your mind and choose a flat glass rooflight instead?“Initially we thought we would put a glass lantern in like everybody else and it didn’t even occur to me that I could have anything else until I was invited to a rooflight launch event by Vario by VELUX. At the event, I completely fell in love with the idea of having a rooflight in my house. I got all the information and, after I realised that even a modern flat rooflight comes with an upstand and you also get the height of the roof built in, which would also give the room the height we wanted, and that the cost would be less than having a lantern of the same size and with no breaks in the glass, choosing a flat glass rooflight was a no-brainer! What do you love most about owning a bespoke rooflight?“It’s so cool and yet functional. Rooflights brings so much more light in than you would get from a normal side window and the fact is that daylight does make you feel better, especially in winter. On top of that, the customer service was excellent, there is always a backup call from Vario by VELUX to make sure you are ordering the right window, they hold your hand through the whole thing and the whole process of designing and ordering was made fun and easy. They helped me with things like setting the window at a slight angle, so the rain just runs off and we don’t end up with a swimming pool situation on the roof! It’s a really hands on, personal service from a small team, but backed by a big name like VELUX so you know you can really trust them. It’s like the gold standard of roof windows.”How did you perceive the installation process of the rooflight?“The process was really simple, easy and quick. Our constructor was provided with all the information they needed to know, in order to put the rooflight in. Our bespoke rooflight was delivered in 6 weeks and we rented a small crane for a day to lift it in. The crane was literally tiny, it fitted through our side gate. Then it was simply a matter of dropping it into the opening and letting the builders do their thing to seal it in. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous on the installation day as the dog insisted on sitting under the opening and it was very windy, but it all went very well. That moment when the hardboard comes off and you get your first glimpse of the sky above, it’s just magic.”Do you think changing your house has improved your everyday life?“Extending the house, and how we use it, has changed the way we live, the way we work and the way we relax. Having an extension, an extra room, the flow and the light we wanted has definitely increased the value of the house but also the saleability of the house. How many older properties have flat roof extensions and haven’t put in a rooflight? There must be loads and they’re definitely missing a trick. We wanted to build personality and I believe that with the extension and bespoke rooflight we got exactly what we wanted. With more daylight and space, I feel more active, I feel more awake, I feel fresher, I get things done. It has definitely changed the way we live.”

Prolectric

Background VIVO Defence Services is a joint venture between Serco and EQUANS, who are industry-leading FM specialists. They have been awarded places on the Defence FM and Housing Maintenance framework contracts. Their purpose is to modernise the lived experience for our Armed Forces. VIVO Defence Services embodies both experience and innovation. A solution was needed to update and significantly improve the lighting quality across the estates for residents. Advanced Technology ‘All in One’ compact design Challenge The lack of quality lighting had implications for health and safety. The new lighting solution needed to be easy to deploy, cost-effective to run and provide reliable year round lighting. Ensuring the installation works had minimal environmental impact. The solution also needed to be environmentally sustainable and significantly reduce carbon emissions.Products — In Action After a site visit, we developed a full lighting design and proposal, ensuring the new site lighting would meet British lighting standards. A total of 89 AE3 solar street lights were retrofitted and installed across various housing estates delivering a bright and reliable year round lighting solution without noise, emissions or the need for mains power. Our expert, in-house installation team carried out the work. The installation took only 2-weeks to complete and was completed in accordance with VIVO’s health and safety regulations. This project successfully demonstrates how sustainable solar lighting delivers a year round, commercially viable solution that can help businesses reach their sustainability targets. Products — Feature Our AE3 solar-powered LED street lights are a high quality, year round, permanent solution with no need for mains electrical power. They can be fitted or retrofitted quickly and efficiently, as there is no need to install cables or dig trenches. Being fully solar-powered means no carbon emissions, no noise, no electricity bills, and minimal maintenance is required. The AE3 features a specially developed smart light controller and Passive Infra-Red (PIR) sensor. This ensures there is light, even throughout the darkest winter months."Having used Prolectric for several lighting projects now, I find their approach, ease of use, knowledge and range of products to be very good. It’s fantastic to be able to work with such a reliable and proactive supplier installing solar lighting adaptions to existing street lighting as well as new designs. The works are incredibly low impact for our families and cause no issues while being completed but result in much better lighting designs as well as eliminating the cost of traditional street lighting electricity bills for our client." ChallengeBewley Homes are a forward-thinking developer and pride themselves in their purse of sustainability. We worked with Bewley Homes PLC to select the right lighting at their head office in Baughurst, Hampshire. Set in a rural location, we had to be mindful of the impact the lighting would cause to the neighbouring environment, but still provide Bewley staff with a well lite car park. The car park was set away from the building and Bewley wanted to create a safer environment for their staff. With that in mind having already started using Solar Vision's Street lights on their developments, they now wanted to take a look at the Solar CCTV that Solar Vision had to offer.SolutionInstalling our ASTRAL lighting columns with built in dusk to dawn sensors and motion sensor, the lights are managed through the night to minimise lighting pollution. After installing Solar Columns in the staff car park, it was decided that they could kill two birds with one stone in as much they could trial the CCTV and enhance the security of the car park at the same time.OutcomeThe Bewley HQ car park is now a well-lit area with the added security of lighting and CCTV coverage.Organisation: Bewley HomesInstalled: LUNAR CCTV Columns & ASTRAL Lighting Columns & HELIA Lighting Bollards

SolarVision Lighting Technologies

ChallengeSlough Borough Council are committed to reducing their carbon footprint across the region, as part of their pursuit of this target the council have sought to include climate-friendly lighting in their projects. Having used traditional solar solutions in the past, they contacted us to help develop a quality, reliable, and efficient solution for their Langley residential Public Open Space which was too dark in the evenings for residents. Working in partnership with Volker Highways, the site consisted of a common park area linking a housing estate with a major road junction for local transport services.SolutionSolar Vision Lighting Technologies were contacted as a solution provider to provide a lighting solution in the residential Public Open Space to help increase safety at night. Ideal for non-intrusive installation, our street lighting range was perfect for the brief provided. The Public Open Space was considered too dark, particularly along the site’s pathways connecting amenities and transport links. To resolve this issue, we installed solar light columns with a unique cylindrical design known as the ‘Solarwrap’, which is unlike traditional solar solutions which were specially designed for Councils like Slough in mind. This range provides A-rated optics designed to minimise light pollution while providing the required lighting, as well as contributing to the council’s net-zero carbon sustainability targets. Solar Vision were able to provide a full end to end solution from initial site surveys to non-invasive installation. A total of eight ASTRAL lighting columns were installed at the site utilising the Krinner Ground screw for a solution that resolves the lighting issue while ensuring the local ecosystem is undamaged.OutcomeThe ASTRAL column supplied in this project provides exceptional light flow across areas such as parking and communal locations, with the added benefit of motion detection to respect the residents and reduce light pollution. The site lighting provided across the areas now provides zero-carbon imprint in line with the council’s targets in addition to reduced maintenance due to the innovative design of this range, and lower ongoing costs not being linked to the main grid system delivering savings to the local community.CO₂ SavingsOver 25 years this project will have saved our atmosphere 9.2 tonnes of CO₂.Testimonial"We at Slough Borough Council have always been an Authority that have promoted Zero Carbon throughout the Borough and are always looking at ways that we can enhance our ambition of reducing our carbon footprint. When Solar Vision Lighting Technologies was brought to our attention, we were extremely keen to understand what they were offering with regard to off grid lighting. After understanding what they had to offer, we made the decision to work with Solar Vision LT and Volker Highways, our street lighting contractor, on a lighting project in a regularly used foot path in Langley Slough where we needed to light this heavily used footpath for added security at night for residents. With Solar Vision LT and Volker Highway we were able to provide a fully lit pathway without the requirement of putting in any infrastructure. Solar Visions LT, ASTRAL Solar Lighting Columns have provided us with a lighting solution without the need for any trenching and cabling work. Light and bright to foster wellbeing

Junckers Ltd

Re-designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, Metalskolen conference centre on North Zealand, Denmark, has undergone a complete transformation. The new, contemporary interior features a total of 2,300m2 15mm Oak Classic plank flooring, fitted throughout circulation and breakout areas as well as in all conference rooms. Delivered unfinished, the solid oak flooring was finished on-site using Junckers’ Rustic Oil in White to create a pale floor which reflects a lot of natural light. True to architectural traditions commonly applied in the Nordic countries, SHL has created an inclusive and nurturing space, providing the perfect setting for learning, reflection and relationship building. Not only concerned with light and aesthetics, SHL base their work on democracy, welfare, sustainability and social responsibility, a commitment which results in buildings with a high degree of wellbeing. A light-coloured floor helps enhance lighting levels, reducing the need for artificial light and therefore saves energy. In contrast to a dark surface, which absorbs and holds heat and subsequently releases it back into the room, a pale floor will not contribute to overheating, reducing the need for air conditioning systems. With a perfectly smooth surface, a solid wood floor from Junckers cannot harbour dust or mites. As an all-natural material, wood contributes to an even and balanced indoor climate as it helps maintain temperature in a room and reduces static from any electrical equipment. Junckers’ floors hold the Danish Indoor Climate label and have undergone extensive degassing and odour testing to ensure there are no chemical substances in the flooring. Prolectric Save QinetiQ Farnborough £300k with Solar Lighting Install

Prolectric Save QinetiQ Farnborough £300k with Solar Lighting Install

Prolectric

BackgroundQinetiQ is one of the world’s largest defence technology contractors. A solution was needed to significantly improve the lighting across their large headquarters site in Farnborough. There was a lack of quality lighting across the site for pedestrians and vehicles. The existing lighting was also high wattage but low quality.ChallengeDigging trenches for new mains-powered cabling to replace the failed circuits would have caused extensive disruption. It would also have been very costly. The new lighting solution needed to provide quality year round lighting, be easy to deploy and cost effective to run. Ensuring that installation works had minimal environmental impact wasalso a major objective. The solution also needed to be environmentally sustainable and significantly help reduce carbon emissions. The SolutionProducts — In ActionAfter a site visit, we developed a full lighting design and proposal, ensuring the new site lighting would reach the British lighting standards.A total of 64 AE3 and AE6 solar street lights and 65 solar bollards were installed, across car parks and walkways – delivering a bright and reliable year round lighting solution without noise, emissions and the need for mains power. Our expert, in-house, installation team carried out the work. It took only 3 weeks to complete and was done in accordance with QinetiQ’s health and safety regulations. This project demonstrates how sustainable solar lighting delivers a year round, commercially viable solution that can help towards reaching your sustainability targets.Products — FeatureThe Prolectric AE3 and AE6 are high quality, year round, permanent solar-powered LED street lights, with no need for mains electrical power. They can be fitted, or retrofitted, easily, quickly and economically as there is no need to install cables or dig trenches.Fully solar-powered – no carbon emissions, no noise, no electricity bills and minimal maintenance required. The AE3 and AE6 feature a smart controller and Passive Infra Red (PIR) sensor, ensuring the unit lasts from dusk to dawn – even throughout the darkest winter months. Our ST series bollards use the latest LED lights and battery optimisation technology, ensuring bright light for as long as needed. The vandal-resistant bollards have a polycarbonate domed head for strength and durability. The ResultsCost Savings Installation saved £300,000 compared to grid powered lightingYearly electricity cost savings of £7,750Testimonial Simon Homer - QinetiQ Project ManagerQinetiQ has a target of becoming a Net-Zero company with ambitious near-term GHG emission reduction targets. To assist with this ambition, Prolectric assessed our lighting needs, developed a detailed site lighting plan and installed over 129 solar street lights and bollards at our headquarters at Cody Technology Park. The new lights are bright and reliable, improving healthand safety during the hours of darkness. The lighting is high quality and proving to be robust in harsh weathers. All lighting completed so far, has required minimal maintenance and the installation has been well received by both the company and our tenants alike.

Barrisol

Simple design and soft light… The Victoria & Albert museum of London, famous for Art and Design, has recently renewed its art gallery and its coffee shop. The challenge of Gareth Hoskins' architects was to bring natural light into this space without damaging the exposed works, drawing 400 years of history. Thus, the architect imagined and created lighting paths and wells of light using Barrisol Lumière® ceiling. Today, the place benefits from a soft and pleasant light. A Barrisol® matt stretched ceiling offers a simple and minimalistic design on the remaining surface.

FastClad

Utilising the same bricks as were being laid by the bricklayers to the masonry walls, FastClad supplied the cladding to the balconies so that there was a seamless match.Collecting bricks from site to ensure that they were from the same production run, the slips were cut and bonded to our profiled backing board at our Leicester factory. These boards were then returned to site for mechanical fix to the balcony structures and pointed in a lime mortar to match that of the cement mortar being used by the bricklayers at an off-site compound. The balconies were then craned into position and fixed to the structure.

Soundproofing internal walls and floors in apartment conversion, Hertfordshire

Soundproofing internal walls and floors in apartment conversion, Hertfordshire

Hush Acoustics

Tudor House was opened as the offices for Hatfield Rural District Council by the Marquess of Salisbury in 1930. A grand old building, it was built in a Georgian style with a host of period features. When its purpose as a public administration building was over, a proposal for a conversion (material change of use) into apartments was put forward by Lioncrest. Whilst not a listed building, they proposed to retain all of the period features and, where time had taken its toll on the building fabric, restore and renovate the brickwork and stonework back to its former glory.Permission has been given to convert the offices into seven new luxury apartments comprising of four two bedroom apartments and three one bed apartments. The largest apartment was constructed in the roof space which entailed reconstructing the existing roof incorporating two large dormer windows and five roof lights. The building includes a large basement which was converted into stores for the occupants and for each of the apartments to have an allocated car parking space.Lioncrest consulted with Hush Acoustics at the design stage of this development for soundproofing advice and assistance with the design, specification and supply of the materials needed. There were a number of design issues to take into account due to the history of the building and the period features. Our soundproofing experts worked closely with Lioncrest to develop the most economical and convenient acoustic system to achieve the high results sought. The detailed and careful installation of the Hush materials allowed some fantastic sound reducing results giving the owners of the apartments a very good standard of living.A variety of products were combined to achieve the necessary sound reduction throughout the building’s separating floors, ceilings and walls. These included Hush Panel Cem 28, Hush Slab 100 Sound Absorber, Hush Seal 20 perimeter strip, Hush Bond Panel Adhesive, Hush MF Ceiling System and Hush Acoustic Hangers.Through detailed planning from Lioncrest with regard to the schedule, Hush Acoustics were able to deliver all acoustic materials to site ensuring that the deadline for completion was met.
