OVER 3000SQM OF SOTECH OPTIMA IPC RAINSCREEN CLADDING HAS BEEN USED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BOURNEMOUTH GATEWAY BUILDING (BGB).Working closely with anodising partner United Anodisers, the Optima Interlocking Plank finished in anodised Anolok regency gold, natural and Anolok bronze, the rainscreen cladding forms a prominent part of the building, situated on the St Paul’s site – next to the St Paul’s roundabout on the Wessex Way; a key location on the main route into Bournemouth.Aluminium is one of the most durable and versatile of metals, anodising enhances aluminium and its environmental virtues. It is exceptionally recyclable, requires minimal maintenance and has proven lifetime performance. Due to the nature of the anodising process and the tight quality controls on both the aluminium and the surface treatment, anodising has a homogeneous (matching & consistent) appearance. Anodising enhances the natural qualities of aluminium further; it permits a strongly contemporary finish with incomparable corrosion and abrasion resistance.At five to seven stories high, the building provides a strong visual gateway to the Lansdowne Campus and a landmark entrance to the town.The building, which accommodates the institute’s Faculty of Health & Social Sciences (HSS) delivers a unified base for the faculty education, research and office activities and provides 10,000 square metres of space for the Faculty and the wider BU population.The BGB is designed to be environmentally-friendly with a number of carbon-reduction measures. The full team behind the build is committed to an ‘excellent’ rating for the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM) certification.The building opened officially in October 2020, but access is currently limited to staff and Postgraduate Research (PGR) students while they familiarise themselves with the building.Special thanks to TAC Projects for choosing Sotech to deliver on this project, which was overseen by Kier Construction with architectural firm Atkins.

The Strand Aldwych is a busy public area well-known as a procession route between Westminster Abbey and St Paul's Cathedral. The area was historically plagued by traffic and pollution, so people were reluctant to dwell for long periods of time.The newly pedestrianised area with stone walls already in place needed public seating outside St Clement Danes Church. Coordinating the wall shape with the stone underneath was imperative, and access was needed to the lighting drivers through the platforms since the stone underneath is illuminated with LEDs. With this in mind, our design team worked collaboratively to develop a bespoke version of our modular RailRoad seating design, based on the principles where interchangeable parts can be easily removed or replaced. A RailRoad wall-top solution was created with a custom curve to match the stone walls, and the platforms have removable hatches for access when needed.The bespoke RailRoad seating solution is manufactured from our triple processed (recycled) steel and powder coated in a distinct metallic copper finish - while the iroko timbers were coated with UV protective finish in teak to maintain their natural look. This project focused on improving air quality, and our AKRI retaining planters were ideal for bringing green into the space. Their flexibility also allowed for matching the geometry of the adjacent stone benches and roads. In order to prevent damage, welded anti skates were incorporated into the solution.The project not only provides health and well-being benefits with the new public landscaped areas, it will preserve the historic character and for the first time allow people to appreciate the nearby listed buildings. The new inclusive seating spaces for people to mix in are seen to be well used as people can enjoy their lunch, meet with friends and colleagues and simply enjoy a sense of community.

Proctor Group, specialists in supplying high-performance products to protect buildings, was selected by Metclad to maximise airtightness and energy efficiency, perfectly balanced with the crucial requirements of vapour permeabilityWraptite self-adhesive breather membrane is applied externally, quickly and efficiently as part of the rainscreen system. Incorporating the Wraptite System helps ensure “as-designed” performance. Its inclusion narrows the gap between asdesigned and actual energy performance whilst reducing the likelihood of possible failures to meet required airtightness levels.Traditionally air barriers have been fitted internally. The internal installation of an air barrier necessitates accommodating building services such as electrical, lighting, heating and drainage systems, thereby increasing the gap between as designed and built. However, the Wraptite membrane fully bonds externally to virtually any substrate, requiring no additional mechanical attachment, seals or tapes to suppress air leakage around junctions or penetrations.The high vapour permeability of Wraptite allows the substrate beneath to dry quickly and moisture vapour to escape and reduces the likelihood of mould, mildew, condensation, timber distortion and metal corrosion.Wraptite is the only self-adhering vapour permeable air barrier certified by the BBA and combines the critical properties of vapour permeability and airtightness in one self-adhering membrane. The India Buildings is located on Water Street in the centre of Liverpool’s financial and business district. It was designed by architects Arnold Thornely and Herbert J Rowse, following a competition to design an office block which was judged by the great Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and built between 1924 and 1932 for the Blue Funnel shipping line owned by Alfred Holt.The building’s design is influenced by the Italian Renaissance style and it has several features of the American Beaux-Arts style, including for example the sculptures of cherubs above the windows.Having sustained damage during World War II the building was restored to its original state after the war under the supervision of Rowse, the original architect.In 2017, the Grade II* Listed Building was purchased by Legal & General and it was announced that HMRC would base a regional centre there. Renovation works commenced with the focus on creating modern, comfortable office space while retaining the heritage features of the building.Clement Windows Group was selected to manufacture and install the new double glazed steel windows which match the original single glazed metal windows and improve thermal performance and energy use within the historic building. Almost 1,000 windows from the Clement MW40 range were specified, polyester powder painted in RAL 9016 (White).Alex Harrison of architects Falconer Chester Hall said: “We had the pleasure of working with Clement on the steel window replacements of the India Building refurbishment project. Their performance in every aspect of the work was outstanding, and we wholeheartedly endorse them for any future contracts of a similar nature. One specific area where Clement excelled during the early stages, was the support we received from them during our discussions with the city planners regarding the bespoke windows. Their contribution proved very useful in moving matters forward and the end result is exceptional.“

Woolston Sixth Form College forms part of Woolston Learning Village, which also includes neighbouring schools Green Lane Special School and Fox Wood Special School. The college educates & supports students aged 16 – 19 years old who have a range of additional needs.Following the installation of a number of Twinfix canopies at Green Lane Special school over the last eight years, Twinfix were approached by Woolston College to design, manufacture and install canopies on two separate occasions over the last two years.The initial project involved fitting a twenty-five sqm canopy with vertical glazing to one of the classrooms at the site. The vertical glazing offered weather protection and an element of privacy for the students using the canopy.The College was so impressed with the process and the installed canopy that they requested a second canopy spanning thirty-two sqm a few months later.Both canopies have aluminium frames powder coated in blue RAL 5010. As this metal does not rust in use, they will keep their good looks throughout their long life. The structures comprise of Twinfix’s innovative Multi-Link-Panel Non-fragile (NF) roof glazing system fitted with tough 16mm opal multiwall polycarbonate. The NF denotes that these panels conform to the HSE’s recommended drop test ACR[M]001:2019, as recommended by HSG33.With safety of the students being paramount, protective foam pads were fitted to each supporting post to guard the children from bumps and bangs and anti-climb guttering was also included in the design for both structures.Not only do the new canopies provide additional safe space for students to play and learn, but it also enabled them to reap the benefits that come with being outdoors.

StoVentec Glass rainscreen cladding has a prominent position at the new Very Light Rail National Innovation Centre (VLRNIC) in Dudley. The RAL 3028 red coloured glass panels were installed by Metclad using Sto’s sophisticated sub-construction. This invisible yet indispensable supporting structure forms the structural link between the façade and the substrate and enabled the individual StoVentec Glass panels to be installed and secured easily to provide a bright, colourful façade for the building’s main signage.The VLRNIC was funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council (DMBC), the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership (BCLEP) in partnership with the Midlands Engine Investment Fund (MEIF), the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) and Coventry City Council. 11,500m2 of Optima TFC+ in 3.0mm Aluminium PPC Interpon D2525 YW206F, Y4312I, Y4317I has been used in the completion of Abbey Place in London.Sitting within walking distance of Cross Rail station, with excellent links to central London, the development comprises two energy efficient residential buildings, one standing at 22 storeys, and the other at 12 storeys.Optima TFC+, Sotech’s through fixed cassette rainscreen, was selected as the perfect solution for creating the three-sided vertical and horizontal column units, whilst maintaining optimum system performance.To validate system performance against the project specific loads and panel profiles, Sotech undertook many FEM studies to ensure the system performed in line with expectations. This also ensured that the correct number of stiffening members and the appropriate fixing requirements were dealt with prior to the project commencing, ensuring a smooth flow of information.The Interpon D2525 Stone Effect range was selected to provide GRC and Natural Concrete look-a-like finishes. Along with the metallic YW206F, all finishes are Qualicoat Class 2 approved and offer an A2-s1,d0 fire rating to the façade.Abbey Place is a development of 245 new homes across two buildings. Linked by a shared communal garden, the new homes provide quality housing, with connections to central London and beyond via the Elizabeth Line.Optima TFC+ has been fire tested to BS8414-2:2015, and classified to BR135 for high rise buildings. The powder is applied to rainscreen panels electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to form a ‘skin’. This electrostatic powder process means we can ensure complete coverage of the panels, even on more complex shapes.Powder coating can produce a much thicker coating than conventional liquid coating leaving PPC rainscreen cladding with a hard finish. The challenge of installing one of the largest expanses of flooring in a single project – and one of the most complex – faced the hub where east meets west at Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar. The airport is described as ‘the gateway to Qatar’ and the hub for its world-class airline Qatar Airways with the capacity to serve 8,700 passengers per hour and 30 million every year. Specifiers wanted a flooring high in aesthetic and environmental credentials to meet all requirements at this important airport zone and meeting all relevant environmental and health and safety regulations.  SystemThe system chosen was epoxy terrazzo flooring supplied by Sherwin-Williams - 140,000 sq metres of pigmented epoxy resin - involving the shipping of pre-mixed marble aggregates from Italy to complete the design for the main floor areas consisting of three colours, primarily dark grey with pure black or white epoxy terrazzo.The epoxy terrazzo was poured in situ as the 16,000 workers from various countries navigated their way around the 5,500-acre site and ground and polished the flooring to a high finish, bringing with it major environmental benefits. Thin set epoxy conforms to the EU’s solvents and Volatile Organic Compounds Emissions Directive.The installation process itself also meant there was very little waste – the terrazzo prepared for installation was measured accurately to allow as much or as little to be used in application.The epoxy terrazzo is high in aesthetic and environmental features and meets the demands of architects and specifiers for longer-lasting products with ever-greater green credentials.Terrazzo flooring is a composite – a mix of resin with aggregates which give the product such variety in its design. Intended to be a durable, hard-wearing and highly decorative flooring solution, the resinWith simple re-polishing or re-sealing using water-based products a typical terrazzo flooring can last up to 40 years. Copenhagen’s Amager Bakke is a visionary project in Denmark that doubles as a recreational playground and a waste-to-energy plant.The towering structure is over 280 feet high, has an estimated cost of $670 million and is a part Copenhagen’s commitment to become the world’s first carbon-neutral capital by 2025. Part of the facility is already on line.The waste-to-energy plant, a giant incinerator that burns household garbage to generate heat for approximately 160,000 households and electricity for 62,500 homes, began operating in March. The recreational component is still under construction.Kalwall® translucent sandwich panels provided a critical solution in this truly global project, with their aesthetic beauty, energy efficiency and, most importantly, their best-in-class explosion-venting properties.Kalwall panels are used in areas of the building where a potentially volatile event could occur. The panels work to vent pressure out of the building, allowing it to withstand an explosion without collapsing roofs or floors. The panels are designed to release from their mounting system, but remain attached to the side of the building to avoid becoming falling debris. The interior of the panels are shatterproof and include a Fiber-Reinforced Polymer(FRP) face sheet that can be customied to withstand 230 ft-lbs (312J) of impact.Staying close to the project’s mission of being environmentally conscious, Kalwall panels provide dramatic savings in energy consumption through exceptional thermal and daylighting performance that reduces heating costs and artificial light usage.Working through Sipral, a leading supplier of external building envelopes based out of Prague, the panels were delivered on schedule and required no on-site modifications. Amager Baake was designed by the highly-acclaimed architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and has the world watching as it merges two completely different applications.BIG founder Bjarke Ingels hopes that Amager Bakke will “change public perceptions of what a public utility should be” by providing a social and physical infrastructure.Amager Bakke provides Copenhagen with a rooftop ski slope that is comprised of 1,600 feet of trails, as well as 10 running and walking trails. There is also a 260-foot climbing wall along the facade.Ingels said the concept of a structure that brings together two diverse interests can be lasting. “If you make a building that remains relevant to the people living around it, and using it and inhabiting it, it can last forever,” Ingels said in an interview with CNN Style.Photography: Christoffer Regild

The Bauder Hot Melt Bakor 790-11 EV with Polyester reinforcement creates a resistant monolithic waterproofing membrane whilst the Bauder AP2 root barrier provides resistance to the system allowing for a green roof to be installed above. As stated by BBA certificate 06/4350, this system provides a durable waterproofing solution for the service life of the structure that it is incorporated in. The resultOn completion of the waterproofing elements the roof was leak tested to ensure the roof’s integrity. The TCRC then installed the Bauder green roof components; PE foil, FSM600 protection membrane, DSE40 drainage layer, filter fleece and over 300 tonnes of Bauder intensive substrate. Finally, Rowland Gold turf was then installed with a drip line irrigation system installed under the turf. Technical representatives from F. Ball have provided flooring with a cost-effective alternative to completely removing and replacing a weakened screed as part of a flooring refurbishment at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, part of Aberystwyth University. Upon removing old floorcoverings, flooring contractors were faced with an extremely rough screed with weak patches, possibly the result of poor installation or curing techniques, environmental factors or age, that was unsuitable for the application of subfloor preparation products and the installation of floorcoverings. Some weak sections were mechanically removed, leaving about 75mm thickness to be made up. A structural engineer confirmed that the concrete bases were, otherwise, structurally sound. New P5 chipboard was affixed to the wood subfloors with screws and glued at the joins. It is often necessary to completely remove and replace a weakened screed. However, F. Ball technical representatives called upon to conduct a site assessment were able to recommend a less costly and time-consuming solution to make the surface suitable to receive floorcoverings, including quickly raising the level of floors where sections had been mechanically prepared. Firstly, any remaining weak spots in the base would need to be removed by mechanical means along with any surface contaminants to create a clean, sound micro-textured finish. Any dust and debris should also be swept away. Moisture tests indicated subfloor relative humidity (RH) levels in the concrete subfloors were as high as 78%, meaning a moisture management solution would be required. Contractors therefore applied a single coat of Stopgap F77 solvent-free epoxy waterproof surface membrane over the entire area to obtain a continuous barrier against subfloor moisture. Flooring contractors then used Stopgap 600 Base deep section levelling compound to raise the level of floors where weak patches of screed had been removed.  It was also recommended that the chipboard over the raised access floors was checked to ensure that the surface was clean, secure and undamaged before applying a minimum thickness of 0.2mm of Stopgap Fill and Prime over the entire area.  The whole subfloor area was then capped with a layer of Stopgap 1200 Pro high performance levelling compound to create a perfectly smooth base for the receipt of new floorcoverings. The final phase of the refurbishment was to install Nora rubber sheet floorcoverings using Styccobond F48 PLUS.

Plus, the product is manufactured from galvanised steel.Galvanising is a process where a protective coating of zinc is applied to prevent rusting and to kill moss.

Created with students firmly in mind, the full amenity space includes a study lounge, library, cinema, games room, communal kitchen, bathroom, gym, and private dining room.The brief for this project was to create a sophisticated, grown-up space which is a stylish change from the traditionally bright and primary-colour-saturated student buildings found elsewhere.THE MAILBOXESThe Symons House project features two banks of freestanding, standard steel H1 mailboxes in the spacious lobby of the building. One bank contains 120 mailboxes, 10 high x 12 wide, and the other bank contains 240 mailboxes which are also 10 high x 12 wide but are back-to-back. This bank acts as a focal point in the heart of the reception lobby area.The mailboxes are in front / out front horizontal products that are freestanding and rest on table supports. These supports ensure that the mailboxes do not need to be mounted or recessed into a wall.As always, we offer a range of options to ensure that the table supports meet the customer needs. They can be polyester powder coated to match the design of the mailboxes or can be clad to create a feature point.The table supports for Symons House were specifically designed to suit the sophisticated theme. The industrial, boxy, aluminium welded legs were powder coated to match the matt black cladding of the mailboxes, creating an overall sleek finish.Working with the stylish interior design theme, the mailboxes have bronze powder-coated doors in a high-end IGP finish which are encapsulated within the matt black body of the mailbox.

At Waitrose, the material was specified at a thickness of 10mm.The ResultQuick and easy to install, CMS Acoustics completed the 150m2 installation of High Impact Mat in just two days. Critical to minimising disruption to store operations, CMS High Impact Mat was able to carry traffic just 24 hours after installation.Waitrose branch manager, Steve Baller, commented: “As part of our commitment to minimise disruption to our neighbours it was important to find a product that would reduce noise. Britannia Metalwork worked with building contractors Gilbert-Ash and Architects Hawkins/Brown in designing, fabricating, and fitting bespoke decorative floor grilles to replace the damaged originals in the Orangery at the City of London Freeman’s School.It was a project that we were thrilled to be commissioned for and work that we are extremely proud of - the grilles were manufactured, delivered and fitted within the project timeframe, despite pressures of the ongoing global pandemic of 2021.The 168-year-old City of London Freemen's School is set in 57 acres of Ashtead Park in the heart of Surrey. The masterplan scheme included the renovation works to the Grade II listed Main House (including an energy centre), and some new buildings including junior school, dining hall and assembly hall as well as landscaping and car park works. The total cost of the project was £15 and won a place as a Finalist in the 2022 Conservation & Regeneration Constructing Excellence SECBE Awards.Britannia was commissioned to design and make a total of 33 bespoke cast iron grilles, with bare metal finish, to be placed within the marbled floor of the historic and beautiful Orangery. The focus of the work was to complement the heritage of the iconic building while ensuring good ventilation to allow the building to become a flexible and useful large space for school events.Frequently referred to as Cathedral, Ecclesiastical or Victorian decorative floor grilles and as seen here, often placed over channels holding heating pipes, they provide a practical and decorative heating vent. Originally designed for churches they are increasingly popular in private houses, greenhouses, and commercial building developments. Creating a contemporary yet highly functional feature of the walls, a combination of acoustic absorbing fabric and writeable glass was used as finishes.Style is the exclusive UK partner to Dorma Hüppe offering a complete range of solid and glass moveable walls with manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic operation.“This is a really stylish head office for Sandon Global, and the Variflex moveable walls not only offer adaptable room space, but they also complement the interior design perfectly,” said Andy Gibson, Style’s director for the North.“The 46dB acoustics on both operable walls ensure that meetings, training sessions, workshops and other events can take place undisturbed. By incorporating a pass door between the board room and seminar area, the wall can be left in place without access issues, only opening up the whole area for occasional large-scale events. In contrast, the meeting room wall is likely to be used most days, depending on numbers.”Between the boardroom and the amphitheatre-style seminar room, writable white glass was applied on the seminar side, with a Creation Bauman Astra Fabric acoustic absorption surface in the boardroom.The moveable wall between the meeting rooms has a mix of the same acoustic absorbing fabric and writeable white glass on both sides – perfect for hosting brainstorm sessions and workshops.Sandon Global manufactures anilox rolls and cylinders used in the flexographic, lithographic and metal decoration print industries, worldwide. Snowflake School is an Ofsted-outstanding teaching environment in a building which was originally a purpose-built hall for the Salvation Army before being turned into an animation studio. Inserted steelwork mezzanines over a herringbone-floored hall contributed to a mishmash of conversions. Given the nature of the school and the links between autism and noise sensitivity, Troldtekt’s acoustic wood wool panelling was specified to minimise sound reverberation and to promote a healthy sound environment and calmness.Project Architect Sophie Fuller explains “The double-height central space works really well as the school’s main hall. In order to minimise sound reverberation, we chose to clad the upper half in acoustic panelling made from wood wool. The texture and neutral colour of the panelling also help to make this tall space feel friendlier and warmer.” Following design guidelines, as well as meeting fire protection and safety requirements, meant many aspects of the building’s history had to be covered although glimpses remain. For example, the original parquet floor used in the assembly hall, original metal handrails protruding from new plywood balustrades and relocated doors as internal windows. At the same time, ramps and a platform stair lift have been added to create accessibility. Founded on the Cradle-to-Cradle design concept, Troldtekt’s natural and inherently sustainable panels are available in a variety of different surfaces and colours and contribute positively to a building’s BREEAM, DGNB and LEED ratings. In addition to their high sound absorption and tactile surface, they offer high durability and low cost lifecycle performance. Available in various sizes and in four grades from extreme fine to coarse, the panels can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour.

An introductory video showing how the centre was developed is shown in the auditorium where our powder coating finish is at eye level - close up and touchable."The Wellcome Genome Campus is a scientific research campus built in the grounds of Hinxton Hall, Hinxton in Cambridgeshire. The focal point within a newly designed Conference Centre is a 100m diameter circular screen created around the Francis Crick Auditorium with an image depicting the evolution of life. The image is created by perforations of different size and pitch in the curved aluminium panels - rather like a pixelated image.Precision powder coating was required ensure that powder penetrated even the smallest perforation in order that the image would be fully revealed.Solution:The individual panels were 2.0m by 0.9m and only 3mm thick, with a border frame to retain the curved shape and enable them to be accurately bolted together. The perforations within them had infinitesimal differences in size and pitch, barely visible to the naked eye. Expert care with coating was required in order to ensure that the powder penetrated every single perforation.We trialled a number of powder coating shades and finishes to find which worked best to reveal the underlying image and asoft pale bronze shade from our anomatch range was selected.The different size and pitch of the perforations created darker and lighter areas on the panels. Our purposeOn behalf of Amye Defence Services, Acclaim Contracts Ltd was commissioned to address the aging roof of the building, which was leaking despite receiving patch repairs over the past 20 years. The Ministry of Defence’s Project Allenby/Connaught demonstrates the Government’s commitment to maintaining defence estates.The £1.45bn scheme is a 35-year commitment to providing modern, high quality, fully serviced, purpose built living and working accommodation for 18,700 soldiers. It involves the new build and refurbishment of more than 550 buildings across Salisbury Plain and Aldershot, including upgrading Allenby’s Building 51, otherwise known as the Sports Pavilion.Our solutionAcclaim turned to Langley to provide all the material necessary to complete the work. After stripping the original roof to the existing plywood deck, the team fitted new treated timber around the perimeter and new uPVC fascia. The current edge trims, perimeter check kerbs, and extended flues were removed to ensure regulatory 150mm clearance was achieved once the new roof covering was installed. Langley’s HT180 attachment layer was loose-laid and nailed into place to provide appropriate protection to the timber deck while the “hot works” above were undertaken. Langley’s TA-20 Flat Roofing System was installed across the roof area, with insulation to achieve the regulatory requirement of 0.18W/m2K. SA-20 Flat Roofing Detailing System was used in fire risk areas, in line with Safe2Torch guidance. The range of Langley’s TA systems complies with Broof(t4) classification and has a Local Authority Building Control (LABC) assured accreditation. Under MOAT 31, Langley’s Parafor 30 GS (cap sheet to the TA system) achieves a ‘resistance to damage” rating of R4. It is independently certified by the BBA to deliver a life expectancy of at least 40 years, one of the longest available in the UK.Acclaim fitted Langley’s ParaFurb Refurbishment Outlets to upgrade the internal outlets where possible, cleaning and priming those where the design precluded the use of ParaFurb. We installed New Code 5 lead pipe sleeves to flues and hot pipes to a minimum 150mm above the waterproofing. In addition, Langley’s ParaTrim GRP Edge Trim was fitted to all the kerbs.“It carried great weight with us that Acclaim worked in partnership with Langley, who offers an independent insurance-backed guarantee. Fed up of renting in London, Joe and Lina decided to build their own on a tiny 38m² plot of land in East London. With a budget of just under £200k they set about delivering Joe’s innovative concept for a six half-floor house with floating concrete slab, designed to maximise the space into a 83m² home, all whilst being filmed by Channel 4’s Grand Designs. However, things soon went south…Within weeks of the project beginning in October 2015, rogue contractors had performed a disastrous basement excavation attempt contrary to the Structural Engineer’s instructions, leaving unsupported banks of earth falling in beneath the street and shutters bursting inwards under the weight of the concrete.This first attempt, described as “spectacularly shambolic” by Kevin McCloud, more than doubled Joe and Lina’s budget for the excavation from £48k to £100k, and caused months of delays in order to get the project back on track.Having already contacted Newton Waterproofing Systems to consult on the poor workmanship, Joe and Newton soon determined that if he were to save his home and get it out of the ground, he would need a specialist contractor to actively communicate, collaborate and listen to him as both the engineer and client.MJ Rooney Construction came on board as contractors in November 2015, and following discussions to determine exactly what was required, modelled the entire project in 4D to ensure that all potential difficulties were solved before work began.With the right lines of communication in place, work recommenced in late January 2016, with the first challenge being to make safe a 3.5 metre high bank of unsupported earth with sheet piles, before creating a new and waterproof structural shell of reinforced concrete.With the shell of the structure in place, Newton and MJ Rooney’s next challenge was a much more welcome one, as they created a bespoke waterproofing solution to accommodate Joe’s ingenious design for a suspended reinforced slab that acted as both a floor and a prop force against the lateral pressure from the basement walls.This entire slab rested on brackets designed by Joe and his structural engineer, insulating it from the external walls by ensuring minimal contact, and only making contact through insulated blocks with enough compressive strength to take the vertical loading. The design also created a cavity around the slab that can be fully insulated, allowing the slab to be used as a thermal mass inside the building without having to insulate the entire external envelope.Working closely with Joe, a solution was devised that enabled the continuity of the waterproofing behind the brackets without compromising the structural design.

This recent prestigious Rosewood La Guanahani Hotel St. Barthelemy hotel in the West Indies is a haven of style and luxury but it has also been very considered in the design to ensure that the buildings work as well as they look, delivering an outstanding acoustic design which elevated the building to another level both visually and aurally.This secluded tropical boutique resort was heavily damaged in 2017 by Hurricane Irma.The significant renovation includes an entire new beach experience with a new restaurant, lounge, boutique, and “feet in the sand” outdoor dining all clustered around an enlarged pool and deck.This fantastic hotel has a range of areas which really needed to think about how the rooms would work acoustically due to the use and levels of people using them while not compromising the architects’ initial plans and ideas.Washington based architects David M Schwarz worked with celebrated designer Sybille de Margerie, on the interiors to ensure the hotel embraces its chic Parisian pedigree while revelling in its relaxed Caribbean setting.French based ID Acoustique consultants were brought in to ensure that this truly stunning project also balanced the acoustic treatments with the decor and with little wall space in parts, acoustic treatments on the ceiling was paramount in many areas. Long standing and rich in history, Rhyl Railway station was opened on 1st May 1848 and was part of the Chester and Holyhead Railway Company’s line. The Station itself is located close to the centre of Rhyl, a lively seaside town on the North Wales coastline and a popular destination for many tourists across the country.As part of a Railway Upgrade Plan, Network Rail have invested £50 million into the restoration of stations across the North Wales Coast. Rhyl was one of the first stations to receive this upgrade and when it was shown that various roofs of the station were in need of restoration.The ChallengeRhyl was one of the first stations to receive this upgrade, and when it was shown that various roofs of the station were in need of restoration, Polyroof was chosen to help restore them to their former glory, and a survey was organised.The specified areas that were in need of refurbishment included the roof over Platform 2 and the bridge walkway roof which connected the two platforms. The existing waterproofing on these areas consisted of built-up felt with a mineral cap sheet, which was in an aged condition and beginning to show signs of failure such as splits and blisters. Leaks were now beginning to occur which were in danger of affecting the condition of the roof structure itself.The SolutionBased on the findings of the survey conducted by Polyroof Technical Services, a bespoke specification was designed that would eliminate the current issues through the installation of the BBA-approved Protec system. Due to the roof being situated above unheated areas, there was no requirement for new insulation within the build up. Firstly the existing built-up felt was stripped and removed from site to expose the original close-boarded timber which was inspected for defects, made good where required and retained where possible. Defective areas where replaced with new timberwork as required. In order to provide a sound, solid substrate a new OSB3 TG4 deck was mechanically fixed across the whole area within a phased approach, ensuring the roof was kept watertight as works progressed.The Protec system was then applied directly to the timber; with its RapidcureTM technology large areas where able to be made fully waterproof within short periods of time. Polyroof Technical Services visited site regularly to ensure works were being completed to the high standards required and regular reports were fed back to the client. Upon completion a final inspection by Polyroof led to the roof being signed off and guaranteed, giving the client complete peace of mind that their roof will be fully watertight for at least the 20 years. Polyroof were proud to be part of this project to restore Rhyl and its Railway station to its former glory.

Heathrow Park is an industrial estate situated close to Heathrow Airport, UK. The construction project involved different collaboration partners – a UK steelwork and installation company and a main contractor, both operating as key stakeholders in the Heathrow Park project. The steelwork company contacted PcP on behalf of the main contractor, looking for a cost-efficient steel maintenance roof walkway to access roof equipment.Project criteria and proposalOn behalf of the main contractor, a steelwork contractor approached PcP to quote for a suitable product for 3,260 square metres of steel flooring for a maintenance walkway. Normally, twisted bar grating is specified for projects of this kind, but PcP CUBE® gratings were suggested to match the customer’s criteria regarding delivery time.The main contractor required grating for a steel flooring platform which had to be supplied by a very tight deadline and at a competitive price but with a high-quality finish. Once the customer accepted the initial proposal for the CUBE® gratings, PcP ensured that the quotation met the all the criteria specified by the client for the planning application. We provided Static load calculations and samples in order to obtain final approval.The solution CUBE® grating – an alternative to twisted bar gratingPcP proposed the new B-CUBE® grating for Heathrow Park flooring as it could be made to suit the spans required at a competitive price. However, and more importantly, the B-CUBE® grating proved a viable proposition to the client due to the low weight of the product compared to other gratings. The delivery time also met the strict site requirements. For the project, the B-CUBE® grating was manufactured over a six-week period using robotic welding on both day and night shifts in order to meet the project schedule.PcP experts delivered tailor-made CUBE® gratings for the steel flooring, and the work included paying special attention to details, accurate technical drawings, and providing all the necessary product certification and datasheets.Customer support, technical expertise and calculationsIn order to address any queries, PcP provided full support from its technical department and customer service team. The following elements were relevant for meeting the strict requirements to both product and delivery:PcP in-house calculation software and expertise was used to provide the know-how required to produce specifications and data sheets in line with British Standards and to meet customer requirements.PcP’s experienced in-house drawing team provided full panel drawings for client approval prior to manufacture.

When the museum inputted the green roof specification, it showed a potential energy saving of 10% per year, as well as a reduction on the future replacement costs of the heating and cooling plant. Some of the green roofs were funded through Drain London, a partnership project led by the Greater London Authority and funded by Defra. The project aims to better understand surface water flood risk across London, with a view to promote interventions (such as green roofs) to reduce surface water flooding. With the support of Drain London we will be researching the rainwater run-off for different green roofs.
