Westgate Shopping Centre in Oxford reopened in October 2017 after the 1970s built centre was demolished in 2016. The £440 million development now offers shoppers a host of contemporary brands to shop from, as well as a variety of food and drink destinations – including the ever-popular Junk Yard Golf Club. According to the Westgate Oxford Alliance, the newly built shopping centre will welcome approximately 15m people annually, creating 3,500 full time jobs. The shopping centre covers around 800,000 sq. ft (74,300m2), 11,000m2 of which is new paving.

The Science Village at Chesterford Research Park is a thriving scientific community, home to ultra-modern and energy-efficient laboratory and office space within the attractive setting of open parkland, an arboretum and lakes.Vehicular circulation, parking and pedestrian circulation were important to the scheme and formed the main body of the external works.The architect Davis Landscape Architecture selected a number of Marshalls’ flag and block paving products for the scheme - Saxon and Keyblok.The hard landscaping perfectly complements the state-of the- art facilities but doesn’t detract from the beauty of the landscape with a carefully selected palette of materials and colours.

Landscape architects LDA Design were given the brief by Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, a charitable organisation which owns and manages a large part of the garden city, to improve and enhance a substantial area within the town centre. Marshalls’ landscaping products fulfilled an important part of the brief, which was to provide an aesthetically pleasing area within the town centre, which attracted shoppers and visitors and acted as a focal point and meeting place where events, such as street markets, concerts and shows could be held. The modernised area around King’s Cross opened on Thursday 26th September 2013 by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, who laid one of the final paving stones on the new King’s Cross Square. In April 2010, Stanton Williams Architects were announced as the winners of a Network Rail competition for the design of a new 7000m² square to the front of King’s Cross Station, as part of the King’s Cross Redevelopment Programme. Sir David Higgins, Network Rail’s chief executive, joined the mayor to congratulate teams hard at work on the final touches to the project.

Chelmer Waterside near Chelmsford in Essex, is a residential-led riverside quarter, delivering new homes and public spaces south-east of the city centre. The site of a former gas works, the land is being regenerated to offer high quality affordable housing on the River Chelmer peninsula.SURFACING REQUIREMENTAddagrip approved contractor The TP Group was appointed by Taylor Wimpey to assist with various aspects of the project, including Landscaping, Painting, and Fire Protection. They were also pleased to help with a very demanding first floor level crescent and second floor walkway within the heart of the ongoing development.Many logistical challenges of surfacing the podium decks were managed and overcome, alongside time restraints and weather conditions. The original plans of using pedestal paving were shelved due to time restraints and material availability. Following discussions, an Addagrip Terrabase Classic Resin Bound no-dig gravel system with a Stonebound finish was selected as the surfacing product due to speed of installation, aesthetics and availability.The TP Group installed a 365mm deep substrate, consisting of various materials, for the podium balconies on the first and second floor level ready for Addagrip’s Terrabase Classic resin bound system. A Stonebound 6mm bespoke blend was selected as the Terrabase Classic resin bound finish with 297m2 being installed on the first floor level crescent and 66m2 on the second floor walkway.The new paving offers a decorative, low maintenance surface with excellent slip resistance.The installation was completed in January 2021.

The Gasholders’ – 149 distinctive canalside apartments and penthouses, built within a refurbished triplet of Grade II listed, cast iron gas-holder guide frames at the heart of King’s Cross, London. Our work on the project included the 149 private balconies, with 14 permutations, all with views across the capital. Variable in size from 7 – 15m², each balcony is curved with odd shaped sides, requiring a solution to accommodate and support the 20mm external porcelain paving. The Buzon DPH pedestal system solved this, not only accommodating the variable heights and slopes, but also the odd shaped pavers and curves.

Battersea Power Station is one of London’s most iconic buildings and remains one of the city’s best known landmarks. A vibrant new community is being created offering the best retail, office, leisure and green space plus unique homes designed by internationally renowned architects, Foster + Partners and Gehry Partners. Working with Maylim, the Buzon pedestal systems have been specified for a multitude of areas across this 39-acre site, for use with timber decking, planter units, seating units, paving and grating. This project is still ongoing and Buzon UK are excited to be involved in such a large redevelopment.

The development of 33 King William Street provides 227,000 sq ft of stunning office space and a quarter acre roof top garden. Buzon UK were specified to install the Buzon pedestal system to support Iroko timber decking and a large area of paving to the spacious roof terrace creating a fantastic relaxation space for the office occupants to enjoy. Buzon pedestals are seriously strong, simple to install and are capable of supporting loads of more than 1000kg per pedestal so were the perfect choice of raised floor support system for this complex exterior terrace of contrasting materials.

Station Square Parade, located next to Colchester North Station is undergoing a substantial conversion from a large office building to 67 one and two bedroom apartments set around a terraced courtyard. Buzon UK have been commissioned to supply and install the DPH pedestal system to support 20mm Rucker Rowe porcelain paving to create an external courtyard and private balconies for many of the apartments. The DPH pedestal system offers excellent water control for raised external floors as the system allows for simple, fast removal of rainwater via access cavity and is fully adjustable from 17 to 1070mm.

Pura® NFC by Trespa brings Pure Delight to Major Shopping CentreWhen the largest factory outlet shopping centre in the North East of England was given a makeover, Pura® NFC by Trespa secured a prominent role in providing the 70-plus retail premises with a fresh, modern appeal to customers.The £3million refurbishment, that included paving, lighting, landscaping and furniture in addition to shop front treatment, was given the go-ahead in 2017. And, says centre manager Jerry Hatch, ‘the overall impact and impression made by Pura® NFC siding was the stand out part of the finished article.”

Furnitubes designed and manufactured bespoke Akri raised planter beds and integrated seating, framed in corten steel – which we chose for its long term durability in outdoor environments. It’s also a great choice where damage to the steelwork might occur. Planter units were sealed using a protective sealant in order to avoid staining on users’ clothing and the surrounding paving and surfaces. Picnic table units were incorporated to provide adequate resting space for public use. Providing a whole range of new playing experiences, Russell Gardens has been transformed for the betterment and wellness of the local community.

Station Square Parade is a 2018 residential development right next to Colchester train station. Originally a large office building, it has now been converted into 67 luxury apartments with private balconies all set around an internal private courtyard. Alfresco Floors supplied and installed a mixture of 600×600 and 400×1200 Rowe, Moroto and Umer 20mm thick slip-resistant porcelain tiles to create a raised seating area and private balconies for all the top floor apartments. The design, supply and installation contract totalled nearly 500 Sqm of external porcelain paving and a small area of artificial grass.

The designer obtained consent under the latest SuDS regulations in the densely build area of London. Restriction on outflow rates to sewers demanded high attenuation. The original design for stormwater attenuation involved discharging tanks under the ground. This was expensive and took up valuable space, an alternative was required. ABG proposed their Blueroof system which could be installed directly on to the hot melt waterproofing system allowing various surface finishes. Due to height limitations a cascade system was used. Various roof finishes included paved access, landscaped areas and bio diverse to attract wildlife. This increased the potential for BREEAM points.

Sherwin-Williams manufacture Resubind CP, a polyurethane system used for walkways, patios, courtyards, ramps, car parks and loading bays and public concourses. Resubind CP is usually installed at about 5mms thickness. Stone and resin bound paving Resubind CP uses the latest polyurethane chemistry to combine resins and aggregates for heavy duty walkways, and delivers a modern seamless surface for external environments such as wide-open public spaces, park walkways and driveways. Using natural aggregates for durability and great aesthetics Resubind CP can transform tired looking external areas or be incorporated into new build projects for a great modern look.

Howe Green Ltd supplied over 850 specially designed and manufactured floor access covers for an underground station which required safe, secure and easy access to building services concealed beneath the flooring. Howe Green designed bespoke duct covers based on the 7500 Series Medium-Duty Floor Access Covers. With a 69 mm depth the access covers were manufactured with an extra thick base plate and reinforcements to meet the demands of what will be a highly trafficked area. The access covers were infilled with two different types of flooring dependent upon their location - Conservation Smooth pavings from Marshalls and Granazzo.

The design specification was for the Sympathetic restoration of a Farm Labourers Cottage using natural materials.The interior brief was for an even textured creamy Portland Stone which was safe in use, durable and had good resistance to staining, so Bowers Basebed was selected for the flooring and stairs leading out of the kitchen.The exterior brief stated that the stone for external paving needed to be safe in use and have good slip resistance results in both dry and wet conditions.It was also important that the stone was aesthetically pleasing with interesting details. Therefore Grove Whitbed was selected.The surrounding wall was topped with Bowers Whitbed due its smooth texture and ease of shaping the edges.

ISG has reached a key construction milestone at its £66+ million Exhibition Centre Liverpool and Pullman hotel development. The Exhibition Centre Liverpool has more than doubled the existing 7,125 sqm capacity at ACC Liverpool to 15,225 sq m of flexible exhibition space.The regeneration of this development has linked to the existing arena and convention centre, making the building the only purpose-built arena, convention and exhibition centre in Europe. Architects Denton Corker have created a striking off-set, rectangular ‘tube’ design for the new concrete frame hotel, looking out over the stunning vista across the River Mersey and the city’s UNESCO World Heritage site.In order to complement the striking architecture, Marshalls was approached to supply the new Modal paving, part of the internationally recognised La Linia range. The broad range of tones and plan sizes meant eye-catching patterns and blends could be employed around the contemporary new building to great effect.A range of other Marshalls products including the contemporary Conservation paving, kerbs and steps were also used to complement the areas around the scheme and help create this striking landscaped area.The new Exhibition Centre has helped to secure Liverpool’s place as one of the top visitor destinations in the UK. Introducing the first new design, cast iron, coal hole cover made in the UK for more than 50 years . Based on 4 segmented circles traditionally used during the Victorian period, this design is right up to date and proudly displays our company name. Particularly important in todays modern society is the deep rebate that allows the design to "pop out" and help generate grip for pedestrians. The circumference has cutaways to prevent water pooling. Available in a bare metal finish to rust naturally and improve grip or painted black . Weighing in at over 5KG this cover will last a lifetime and be a feature within the paving for the public today and for future generations.

This project in Oxfordshire used Raj Green to echo the traditional countryside nature of the property. Addagrip approved contractor, Resin & Rock were delighted to be appointed to install tree pit resin bound surfacing around the base of a number of the London Plane trees on the newly redeveloped Exhibition Road in the Royal Borough of Chelsea and Kensington.A 6mm Lucerne Silver was used to replace the existing self-binding gravel finish to fulfil the clients’ requirements for a porous, hard wearing and aesthetically pleasing surface capable of tolerating the high pedestrian flows in this busy street. A super-flex collar was included in the installations to allow for tree growth and to ensure that there was no loose aggregate.The low maintenance paving provides a seamless surface with excellent slip resistance and can be easily kept clean.The installation was completed in November 2014

This large car dealership in Dorset required a new car park surface for the external paved areas. Planning requirements meant that a porous system was required to enable sustainable drainage and avoid large scale run-off into the surrounding catchment. Using Tarmac's ULTISuDS porous asphalt sustainable drainage systems met the needs of the local planners by managing surface water and reducing direct surface water run-off, but also met the client’s requirement for a safe, accessible all-weather surface for their customers. By eliminating surface water, it also eliminates the problem ice patches that can occur in cold weather conditions. It would also be durable enough to cope with daily vehicle movement and static loading from cars that were on display. 

This £48M project provided a new copper and Portland Stone cladding canopy fronting Piccadilly provides shelter for the lift entrance and a new staircase that runs from Piccadilly.The planning approval process involved collaboration with artist John Maine RA whose work is featured in relief on the Portland Stone cladding and granite paving to the Piccadilly area of the project. The work focuses on the geology of the Portland Stone cladding and setting of the station in the natural environment of Green Park.Art on the Underground commissioned artist John Maine RA to create a new artwork which forms part of the station structure for passengers to enjoy.Albion Stone provided stones from the full range of Portland Stone beds available creating a stunning contrast between the stones

Lying in the very heart of London’s most creative neighbourhood, The Atlas Building is architecturally striking with a series of staggered fins and a mix of contrasting facades.MAKE were the concept architects behind this scheme, while Scott Brownrigg had overall responsibility for the design and delivery of the project.EH Smith were brought in to assist with the brick element to this building. We were able to offer our GeoBrick range as a cost-effective alternative to the linear bricks that Scott Brownrigg initially considered.GeoBrick, exclusive to EH Smith, uses paving technology to repel dirt so the facade will remain crisp and clean.The stark, white, clean linear bricks juxtaposed with the living wall adjacent to them complimented the contemporary urban surroundings beautifully.

The brief for Clearstone was to install a 8m2 prominent resin Seagull logo for Brighton & Hove, Albion Football Club, to welcome all visitors to the club. Clearstone was chosen for the project as they are a specialist resin bound surfacing company with expertise in producing custom paved logos.Clearstone’s design team, overlayed the architect’s drawing, enabling individual elements to be laser cut, and calculated the quantities of materials needed for the complex installation. Clearstone’s team of highly trained craftsmen took the laser-stencil-cut letters and images, carefully pinned them in place, before infilling the design with PrismStone®, Clearstone’s colour coated quartz range, designed for decorative surfaces. This careful process enabled the graphic to take shape exactly as requested by the club. Dural were contacted and asked to supply DUROSOL flexible aluminium trim, 18.5mm.

A stunning refit of a listed building overlooking Green ParkDevonshire House is a Grade 2 listed gem residing in Mayfair, and we worked with Bain Capital and TP Bennett Architects and their respective contractors on the refurbishment of the fourth-floor offices and their four expansive external terraces. The challenge was to find a decking solution that was fully compliant with the latest Building Safety Regulations while maintaining the aesthetic of this historic London property.MyDek’s Luxura – an A1 fire-rated composite – was chosen for the project as it seamlessly aligned with the building’s aesthetics while delivering a robust, enduring surface for the upgraded outdoor spaces. The roof terraces had a limited loadbearing capacity that could not accommodate concrete paving and Luxura emerged as the ideal solution, allowing for top quality decking that remained well within structural limits.

Project descriptionTouchwood Shopping Centre in Solihull, Birmingham is an award-winning, 650,000 square-foot shopping and entertainment complex, which opened its doors in September 2001.Touchwood has become a blueprint for in-town development due to its innovative design, easy access to the M42, and 1,700 car parking spaces. It is home to more than 80 stores, 20 bars and restaurants, and a 9-screen cinema.The centre has successfully improved neighbouring facilities with malls, a retail offering, and civic gardens, providing green spaces for the local community.Rio Asphalt and Paving Co Ltd worked closely with the shopping centre management team to offer a replacement waterproofing and paving element for the 900m2 service deck area.Solution and installationThe focus was on delivering a solution that worked for both client and the tenants and ensured a smooth and seamless experience.IKO Permapark – a specially formulated mastic asphalt surfacing and waterproofing system for car parks and elevated vehicle decks – and the fast-curing IKO flexia metatech liquid waterproofing were chosen as the most suitable solutions for the project, given their durability and rapid installation capabilities.Certain areas were prioritised by the management team and project works were phased. The deck was split into manageable sections, which helped to minimise disruption and limit the impact on those occupying and visiting the site during the project period.Particular attention was given to the mechanical and electrical (M&E) services, which remained operational throughout the works. As areas were inaccessible for mastic asphalt, a compatible cold applied system was used instead.This enabled the works to dovetail into a small number of inaccessible areas, refurbishing what would have either been left or required substantial financial outlay and risk.The service deck area, which remained in use during the project, operated a one-way system for all vehicles. Rio also took measures to maintain road access around the centre and provided temporary delivery areas to assist with the distribution of goods to the stores.

The client required a durable, low-maintenance, all-season surface for this 3.3 km stretch of two-way, segregated cycleway in Birmingham that would offer clear demarcation and provide a safe, appealing route for cyclists.ULTICOLOUR, Tarmac’s durable coloured asphalt was chosen to surface this cycleway, in a mid blue colour, to provide clear demarcation from the existing road surface. Using a high performance clear binder it offers brighter coloured asphalts, ideal for demarcation. ULTICOLOUR SMA is BBA HAPAS approved for use on UK highways as a coloured thin surface course and has been in use on UK roads for over 20 years. It has proven to be highly durable, delivering lasting performance, even on highly trafficked roads. ULTICOLOUR can be laid quickly over large areas using standard paving equipment, just like a conventional surface course.

A busy Leeds Freightliner container terminal located to the South East of Leeds needed replacement of a number of sections of the external paving. The site is subject to constant traffic and extreme loading, with loading vehicles weighting up to 100 tonnes when carrying a container and daily use by HGV’s. Tarmac’s TOPFORCE fibre reinforced concrete offered the ideal solution. Although TOPFORCE concretes can be used instead of conventional steel reinforcement in some applications, in this case it would be used for added durability and crack resistance in a pavement design containing two layers of steel reinforcement mesh within a 300mm slab. The fibres within TOPFORCE provide three-dimensional reinforcement throughout the full depth of the pavement. Through this project, a dynamic education hub is taking shape, with Ark Swift Primary Academy, Harmony Nursery, and the Adult Community Education Centre, all undergoing a revamp. A dedicated youth zone catering to the younger generation is also being developed. This regeneration project also introduces 132 housing units, comprising 55 one-bedroom and 77 two-bedroom apartments, tailored to the needs of local residents and essential workers, including teachers. The transformation extends further with the creation of a public square and pedestrian and cycling routes aimed at reducing travel time and enhancing access to nearby transportation nodes.Stofix products are being used in block C of this project – a 95,000 sq ft office building of the highest grade, complete with terraces, meeting spaces, and a crowning top-floor penthouse. This endeavor paves the way for a brighter, more interconnected community future.

The client, East Lindsay District Council, planned to build a brand new £7m state of the art Public Sector Hub facility in Horncastle, Lincolnshire to provide office space for the District Council, Boston College, along with Lincolnshire Police and local medical organisations. A sustainable approach was needed towards the construction of the large 220 space car park required to serve the new building to avoid surface run off and flood risk to the surrounding area.  Using Tarmac's ULTIPOROUS meant planning conditions and would keep the car park free from standing water, even after heavy rainfall. It also avoided the need for additional costly drainage systems and was far less labour intensive than alternatives like block paving, which helped saved time and cost for the client. The smooth, even finish also met the client’s requirement for a safe, low maintenance, all weather surface.

This Grade II listed farmhouse in Monmouthshire has recently been redecorated using the KEIM Granital system. The 16th – 18th century limewashed lime rendered property needed a freshen up. The limewash was delaminating and powdery, lower sections on the northern elevation were damp with black mould, green growth moss and algae were prevalent on all elevations, as well as hairline cracks within the render.   It was specified that all elevations should be cleaned free of excessive mould and green-growth and powdery residue from the limewash. KEIM Algicid-Plus to be applied and left to dry on the surface before coating. The lower exposed render on the front elevation was suffering from splash back off the paving stone, it was recommended that an application of KEIM Silan Primer was applied on the first 0.5m of this elevation, to allow improved water repellence. The KEIM Granital system was then used to obliterate hairline cracks and provide a breathable coating.
