Working with the project architects, our technical team helped to develop the door specification for this state of the art 86,000sqm medical research facility. Dortek designed and installed more than 500 bespoke hygienic door and automation solutions throughout the facility. This included non fire rated and fire rated single action and sliding doors and hermetically sealing sliding doors. Our doors were essential for providing protection across hazardous fire areas. Our void free doors are hygienic, easy to clean, non absorbent and do not harbour bacteria. This makes them ideally suited to research laboratories which are sensitive to contamination.

Project BackgroundHoe Bridge School is an independent co-educational pre-prep and prep school in Woking, Surrey. The sports hall had been heated by an old radiant system supplied some 35 years ago. The old system was past economical repair so the school decided to invest in a brand new radiant heating system. Contractor, ABS Ltd had over the years maintained the facility, so the school looked to them for advice on replacement equipment. Powrmatic were approached by ABS Ltd and undertook a thorough survey of the sports hall, with a view of replacing the old system with a new Powrmatic SRP – PCV continuous radiant tube system.Project SolutionAlthough the concept of the new heating system is very similar to the old one, there are sound reasons for the like-for-like type replacement. Radiant heating in sports halls is well established as it provides an environment of uniform heat coverage without stuffiness where sports activities can be performed in complete comfort.The new Powrmatic SRP – PCV continuous radiant tube system comprised two radiant branches, each 22m long, down the length of the hall, each branch containing 2 x PCV 23kW burners, all feeding to a vacuum fan to extract the products of combustion. This arrangement virtually mimicked the original layout to reduce the installation time and costs.Project ResultGas fired continuous radiant tube heating is a proven type product being the most appropriate solution for the challenge presented by sports halls, maintaining comfort levels whilst minimising fuel usage and carbon emissions.The SRP-PCV system combusts fuel at the point of use and has the capability of modulating down to 60% of high fire whilst maintaining efficiency but reducing fuel consumption. The Powrmatic SRP-PCV system is designed and manufactured in accordance with BS EN 17175:2019 for Multi-Burner Systems and incorporates a patented burner metering device.The Powrmatic SRP-PCV & PCV+ systems have been validated following review against government approved high performing energy efficiency criteria, with a Seasonal Space Heating Energy Efficiency (SSHEE) of greater than 90%, thus allowing inclusion onto the ETL (Carbon Trust, Energy Technology List). This high efficiency reduces energy usage, operational costs and carbon emissions.

In 2019 Inpro were asked by Skanska to tender for an expansion joint product line addressing the exterior cladding of this unique facility. At that time, several other manufacturing companies were being considered for the wide ranging scope of movement joints required. However after in depth interviews, only Inpro was able to offer all the complex joint solutions required in one primary supplier.Detailed Sustainability product information was submitted and verified by third parties.Complicated Shop Drawings and take-offs of the massive 6-building involved depicting multiple complicated transitions between varying substrates, differing products and a range of geometries for the custom-made solutions.Demonstrated our ability to overcome complex technical and field-related problems.Were involved with hours of online meetings with the main stakeholders- Skanska technical teams, the Architectural team and the Installing Contractor in a collaborative approach to implement best practice and minimize risk.This was an Inpro team project including Senior Product Management, Sustainability team, estimation and commercial management who all played an important part to land this iconic development with SKANSKA.

The distinctive, semi-elliptical shape of the new 90m high glass and steel office building at 70 St Mary Axe in London required proven passive fire protection and acoustic solutions that could fit with the unique curved frame. Leading manufacturer of fire, acoustic and thermal insulation products, Siderise, met the challenge.

Tallest tower in London’s financial district uses market-leading SonaSpray for acoustic perfection.As well as dominating the skyline of London’s financial district with its striking 23-sided glass façade, 22 Bishopsgate has not only rewritten the rules of what a modern office space should look like but also how it sounds. Having become a ‘mecca’ for workplace wellbeing, putting individuals and employees at the heart of its design, it was important that the spaces sounded as good as they looked. With acoustics playing a leading role in delivering overall comfort to a space, partnering interior design studios DesignLSM and The Morris Project turned to experts, Oscar Acoustics, to control sound levels within its buzzing food and dining area - ‘The Market’ for pitch-perfect ambience.  Known as the ‘foodie heart’ of 22 Bishopsgate, its selection of bustling food counters makes it a hub for workers looking to drink coffee, take lunch breaks and host meetings. However, being a lively, open hospitality space, the clink of cutlery and energetic conversation would mean that the café space was at risk of excessively high noise levels, which left unchecked would create an uncomfortable drinking and dining experience for guests.  Karen Taylor, DesignLSM’s lead designer, said: “Providing a healthy environment that would enhance the physical and mental wellbeing of those working in the building was a top priority when designing the 20,000sq ft space. The building itself includes triple-glazed windows to reduce outside noise, but it was important that the internal acoustics were just as well considered to compliment the sense of balance and harmony throughout.  “As a multi-purpose space, The Market area is a dynamic part of the building where the Bishopsgate community can unwind, dine and socialise. Whilst the area needed to have a spirited ‘buzz’ to it, there would also be guests that wanted to relax and recharge, and therefore considering the people and their needs was always at the forefront of our design strategy.” As The Market includes an array of hard surfaces such as tables and chairs in-line with its open dining aesthetic, a solution was needed to counteract noise reverberation and echo, which causes sound levels to climb. To remedy this, DesignLSM turned to Oscar Acoustics’ SonaSpray acoustic spray range. Once applied to ceilings or walls the seamless acoustic finish absorbs sound energy instead of reflecting it, enabling designers to create serene and inviting spaces. In this case, its SonaSpray fcx acoustic plaster finish was used to reduce overall noise for a more calming atmosphere. With strict building deadlines and restrictions to adhere to, SonaSpray was also chosen for its efficiency as it can be applied quickly with minimum disruption, allowing work to continue as promptly as possible.  Importantly, it was Oscar Acoustics’ third-party safety certifications that caught the eyes of designers. With such a large building to consider, fire safety had to be a number one priority. With fire credentials that go above and beyond Approved Document B fire requirements (Class 0 to BS476 & B-s1, d0 fire rating), the SonaSpray range produces little to no smoke and absolutely no droplets – which can assist in the safe escape of occupants should an event occur.  As the first building in the UK to apply for the WELL Building Standard, the premium acoustic spray was a perfect fit due its contributions towards many sustainable design and health certification systems including WELL, BREEAM, SKA, Living Building Challenge and adds up to 17 points towards the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating of a project. It also boasts GREENGUARD Gold certification which shows it has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of VOCs into indoor air, aiding in the creation of healthier indoor environments. Ben Hancock managing director at Oscar Acoustics, said: “22 Bishopsgate has raised the bar in office design and it’s a real feather in our cap to be part of such a pioneering and monumental building.  “When we were approached about the project, we jumped at the chance. The children’s’ clinic at the University Hospital of Erlangen treats pre-mature and newborn babies, children and teens of all ages. To ensure optimal care, depending on the medical condition and age, it has various departments and clinics staffed by experienced paediatricians, equipped with modern diagnostic and therapeutic tools and techniques. They work closely with highly qualified nurses, physiotherapists and educators for the health of its young patients.

With an acclaimed biochemistry building constructed in 2008, the University of Oxford appointed main contractor, Laing O’Rourke, to build the £73m phase two expansion of the facility.The institution required extra space for the faculty and the new building would house very specialised equipment.With respect to a partnership agreement with the University of Oxford spanning 20 years, it was important for Laing O’Rourke to select the right partner for the project.

Sterillo Hand Dryer and Sterillo UNO have understandably been flying out of our warehouse in recent months. Our washroom sterilisation equipment was primarily being used in just the one room, but thanks to Sterillo UNO – a complete air sanitisation unit without a hand dryer, we have seen customers finding other purposes and locations for them to be used.

THE LOCATIONThis brand-new student accommodation development is situated in the River Street neighbourhood of Manchester. The striking appearance of the development is down to the architectural design and materials used including the Cor-Ten steel alloy cladding which pairs perfectly with the dark blue painted panels.THE PROJECTThe development comprises 792 student bed spaces including a mix of studios and apartments and offers affordable, stylish, and accessible accommodation in the heart of Manchester whilst being a safe environment for students to learn, grow and live.THE PRODUCTSafety Letterbox discussed the design, layout and fire specifications of the project. After a few options were presented the client chose our FR2 mailbox. The FR2 mailbox is horizontal in front/ out front 2-hour fire-rated (integrity only) mailbox.Our 2-hour fire-rated mailbox range is commonly used within an evacuation route as they are capable of holding backfire or containing a fire for at least 2 hours, satisfying building and fire regulations.The mailboxes we’re powder coated in special colour – MATT Pearl Gold (RAL 1036) giving the mailboxes a stunning high-end aesthetic finish whilst being practical and completely secure. Multiple keys were also supplied, and doors were engraved for easy identification

Background & BuildingSituated within an Art Deco Grade 1 listed building is MediCity Nottingham, the pharma incubator. MediCity is a collaboration between Boots and BioCity, the UK’s leading life sciences incubation business. To provide and encourage a stimulating and supportive business development environment for innovators, their premises was completely refurbished.The Brief in BriefThe co-working space is a stylish art deco alternative, which was designed to encourage collaboration and productivity for all.Hot desks and “pods” were designed and installed to create a flexible working environment for individuals or small teams. The facilities include laboratory and office space, access to high-end equipment, shared services, training, business support and access to investment. Aligning to the purpose of the facility, building performance was a key aspect of the brief.Komfort’s SolutionWith the intent of meeting performance requirements, Komfort’s glazed Firescreens were installed in the reception area. Komfort’s technical and project management teams worked closely with the design team to provide a solution to fully glaze the reception area from floor to ceiling.Our specialist internal glazing and firescreens provide a fire rating of up to 2 hours, along with sound and structural performance. Utilising thin glass, minimal framing and exceptional structural performance the specialist internal glazing and firescreens are unique, combining aesthetics with performance.The End ResultKomfort thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the design process and working so closely with Roshal Space Consultants. The building now serves the purpose of providing an ideal and inspiring environment for both start-up and established companies to grow and achieve success, whilst adhering to building performance requirements.

The University of Bristol has upgraded its emergency lighting with a further 10 LuxIntelligent emergency lighting panels from Advanced. The new equipment was installed alongside 21 existing LuxIntelligent panels linked to around 4,500 light fittings, to ensure ongoing compliance with the BS 5266-1 code of practice for the emergency lighting of premises.The LuxIntelligent panels were fitted across a range of university buildings, including seven halls of residences, using existing cabling. The ease with which LuxIntelligent can be used to replace outdated emergency lighting on existing sites allowed significant time and cost savings to be achieved.In total, 31 LuxIntelligent emergency lighting panels from Advanced now protect numerous buildings across the University of Bristol, linked to a wide variety of LED luminaires from the LuxIntelligent range, to protect buildings with very different lighting requirements. They include downlighters, spotlights, exit signs and bulkhead lighting that complement equipment already installed in the historic Victoria Rooms and the Wills Hall halls of residence, as well as operating theatres and abattoirs in the veterinary college campus.

Cambridge Biomedical Campus. (CBC) created a vibrant and groundbreaking health care community at the forefront of science and medicine.Dortek’s brief was to supply and installation of doors to a very specific programme, across primarily 3 floors.Our Dortek doors were installed within the BRF rooms, laboratories, holding room, procedure rooms, CL3 labs, equipment store, changing rooms, and circulation routes. The type of doors we installed were GRP hinged and sliding in stainless steel frames, many with integrated privacy panels.SolutionThe particular project requirements that made our doors suitable was the durability, acoustic performance, non organic door quality of our SS frame which ensures suitability to this environment. The SS frame had previously been used at Francis Crick Institute also. We fulfilled the clients expectations by meeting the specification and programme, and working closely with planners to interface with other trades. There was some complexity about the project as most doors are very large for equipment access and some have acoustic requirements, also to include is there are a lot of doors in a concentrated area.

Vetrotech supplied their very own Pyroswiss fire-resistant glass, which resists fire for up to 30 minutes, thus building a physical barrier against flames, hot smoke and toxic gases. The glasses were supplied in various colors, which bring a warm and creative touch to the facility while marking the different departments within the hospital.

Over 470 m2 of fire-resistant glass - Contraflam 30 - has been installed, including partitions, fire doors, staircases and meeting rooms. As part of a three-year programme by Birmingham City Council to install fire sprinklers in 10,000 flats across 213 tower blocks, Pendock MXF sprinkler boxing is being used to conceal surface mounted pipework.Manufactured from pre-formed plywood and incorporating a white finish, MXF fire sprinkler boxing was specified, rather than on-site fabrication to provide a consistent and uniform finish while minimising the visual impact of the new fire safety measures in each tenant’s home.Also, it doesn’t require painting and typically takes less time to fit than site made alternatives, which helps reduce labour costs and minimises tenant disruption.

A fault-tolerant network of MxPro 5 intelligent fire panels from Advanced was chosen to protect the 3Ts Redevelopment programme at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.A total of 36 4-loop MxPro 5 panels, 46 repeater panels and two custom-built AdSpecials panels from Advanced were installed as part of 3Ts, a construction programme to modernise the front half of the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. Phase one involved the construction of a 13-storey building with two basement levels. Incorporating all the functions of a modern hospital. The building includes a three-storey atrium reception, outpatient departments, operating theatres, wards, a teaching facility and administration facilities.The fire system was installed by the team at Essex-based EA-RS Fire Engineering Ltd, who installed Advanced’s industry-leading MxPro 5 fire panels alongside bespoke sprinkler indication and ventilation override panels, all linked to approximately 5,000 Hochiki devices.

Pyroguard’s technical expertise recently proved vital on the regeneration of the Capuchino Convent de San Antonio de Padua in Spain; a project which required a careful balance between renovating the historic building, ensuring modern fire safety regulations were met and being respectful of the Convent’s heritage.The ChallengeThe project presented teams with many challenges, mainly how to work within the parameters of a historic building and bring it in line with modern-day regulations, all while simultaneously respecting its heritage and aesthetics.When it came to the building’s compartmentation, an important part of any building’s passive fire protection strategy, the use of glass was key. To ensure that any new glazing was in keeping with the convent’s style and heritage, the Duramen System from AFVidrio was chosen – a timber frame with a varnished oak finish.The SolutionA bespoke EI120 fire resistance test was then carried out, using AFVidrio’s frame in collaboration with Pyroguard. This fire test was a critical phase of the project and provided assurances of the overall glazing system’s performance. Pyroguard’s expertise and technical knowledge was key in helping to design and pass the EI120 fire test, which featured its Pyroguard Protect fire safety glass.Another challenge of working within historic buildings, as opposed to a new development, is having to adapt the building products to suit the existing structure. On the Capuchino Convent de San Antonio de Padua project, a selection of the glazing units were semi-circular doors and other shaped glass, rather than the standard rectangular panes. Here, Pyroguard again demonstrated its technical expertise, supplying bespoke glass components to suit the on-site framework.

The ChallengeA residential development exclusively for the over 55’s, Quantock House in Taunton, Somerset features a series of contemporary one and two-bedroom apartments set over the eight-storey building. The latest development from Platinum Skies, part of the Affordable Housing and Healthcare Group (AHH), Quantock House includes a bistro, bar, activity room and private, landscaped gardens. Designed with comfort and luxury in mind, each apartment features a modern glass balcony offering stunning views over the surrounding hills.Appointed by AHH, AMI was tasked with developing a fire-rated glass balustrade solution. Working closely with Pyroguard’s technical team, this collaboration resulted in the development of AMI’s Fire-Tek Balustrade system, featuring Pyroguard Balustrade fire safety glass. The system, fully backed by site specific structural calculations, is compliant with all the latest building regulation requirements for residential buildings over 18 metres tall (11 metres in Scotland).The SolutionDesigned specifically for balcony and balustrade applications and suitable for installation on buildings over 18-metres high (the first of its kind and patent pending), Pyroguard Balustrade is a toughened fire safety glass, manufactured to classification A2-s1. In addition to its fire reaction qualities, Pyroguard Balustrade also offers excellent light transmission and is certified to the 1B1 impact resistance rating (according to EN12600) – both key factors for the application.Quantock House is one of the first UK projects to have an NHBC accepted A2-s1 glass balustrade system installed on its apartment balconies – the result of a close working partnership between fire safety glass manufacturer Pyroguard and Architectural Metalwork Installations Limited (AMI), the architectural metalwork specialist.

Helo completed a custom designed steam room and sauna for Stafford training college. The health suite is part of the training facilities which include spa therapies. Both rooms feature unique Helo equipment and design systems to provide an environment which is attractive and comfortable.The final health suite finishes have the look of a luxury hotel but have been delivered within a strict budget and timeframe.

A brand new hospital in Middlesex will deliver efficient and much improved care to it’s patients. The hospital includes new wards, an extension on one of its existing wings as well as the relocation of its existing energy centre. With so much investment in the new hospital including state-of-the-art equipment, the roof design needed to be robust, provide security and require minimal maintenance throughout its lifetime.

Fitting a ceiling hoist in an operating theatre makes it easier for staff to do their job and improves patient safety. However, the presence of other ceiling-mounted equipment is one reason why so few operating theatres in Denmark have ceiling-mounted hoists.The Regional Hospital in Horsens is now installing ceiling-mounted hoists in all the operating theatres in its new surgical department.

To comply with passive fire protection requirements, Nullifire worked with trusted contactor Protek Interiors to install both SC602 Intumescent Base Coat (On-Site) and SC802 Water Based Intumescent Base Coat (On-Site) to this 2500m2 project. The combination of these projects worked well given the challenging circumstances and allowed for Protek Interiors to fully adhere to the fire strategy of the building.

HAG was entrusted with supplying a suite of fire protection solutions, including fire curtains and shutters, to HSBC UK’s flagship office, One Centenary Square, located in Birmingham.This cutting-edge conversion of a ten-storey building symbolised a substantial £200 million investment in the West Midlands. Working within this expansive 1.5 million square foot site posed significant challenges, especially given the heights involved.
