Still Note Acoustic Panels - St. Gemma's Hospice Leeds

Still Note Acoustic Panels - St. Gemma's Hospice Leeds

iKoustic

St Gemma’s Hospice regularly host seated exercise classes, lunches and other activities in their main hall. They noticed there was a lot of echo and sound reflection within the room, this was leading to verbal communication breaking down and leaving residents feeling isolated.Hearing loss is a common issue among elderly citizens, combined with a room with poor acoustics, this issue can be amplified significantly and have a detrimental effect on their mental & physical well-being.Hear the difference the Still Note raft panels made to the acoustics in our YouTube video. It takes our brains 35% more effort to interpret information through poor audio, this can lead to a slower response to stimuli over time.Reflection is where soundwaves emitted from a source hit a solid object such as hard wood flooring or a brick wall & bounce back into the room in several directions. Large rooms with a lack of soft surfaces such as soft furnishings or carpet are especially susceptible to this phenomenon which is what St Gemma’s Hospice were experiencing.Absorptive Acoustic PanelsBy installing absorptive Still Note acoustic panels on the walls & hanging them from the roof we were able to reduce the reflection of soundwaves, completely transforming the soundscape & the room aesthetics. So what did St. Gemma’s have to say about the results?"Just wanted to say a big thanksfor getting this work over the line – the difference it has made is incredible! We had Community MDT yesterday with a full room and everyone commented on the significant improvement to the sound – people could clearly hear what was being said and the sound no longer bounces around or drifts away. The positive difference is also very noticeable when there are only a few people in the room."We have also had some super patient feedback from the Thai Chi group yesterday – “Normally I struggle and can’t hear a thing that is said, and today I heard everything – it’s brilliant”.

Cannon Green Staircase

Cannon Green Staircase

Lazenby

Cannon Green’s RC cast in situ polished concrete staircase is an Ocubis project in conjunction with John Robertson Architects (JRA), Civic Engineers and Six Smith Build. Lazenby built and installed the 21m long, 7m high and 7.5m wide (at the top) inverted amphitheater cast in situ Pewter concrete staircase. This staircase was designed by JRA and structurally engineered by Civic Engineers, incorporating BIM modelling due of the intricacies of the reinforcement design. This self-supporting staircase is tied into the structure with a steel stringer to convert the loads and moments down through the steel columns.Lazenby installed traditional formwork to create the stepped soffit that leads up to the inverted amphitheatre steps. Lazenby then installed a false work system (from Ischebeck Titan/Inform UK) enabling the formworkers to create the radius former inverted amphitheatre undercarriage that is visible from the restaurant (Drake & Morgan). The reinforcement was then added to the soffit and steps; the carpenters then added formers and attached nearly 700 DDA studs to the formwork prior to the casting of concrete.Lazenby’s integral-coloured Pewter polished concrete was batched on site into a C32/40 concrete supplied by London Concrete. The project used approx. 24 cubic meters of concrete and 6 tonnes of steel reinforcement. Ground floor to the top landing and seating area is just over 4m high, 21m long and 7.5m wide with 24 shallow risers and 3 functional landings. The first 3m wide step widens to a 7.5m inverted amphitheatre style landing featuring single and double height steps.Lazenby’s 8 master craftsmen were onsite for the duration of this 12-week project. Lazenby won the Cannon Green project based on the ability to deliver unrivalled experience for projects of this scale and magnitude. Engineering from Civic Engineers, design by JRA and experience and know-how from Lazenby’s master craftsmen created a steel and concrete masterpiece of exacting standards.

Dorma Varitrans HSW single glazed Acoustic moveable wall - product launch Balcony Sliding Wall (BSW)

Dorma Varitrans HSW single glazed Acoustic moveable wall - product launch Balcony Sliding Wall (BSW)

Style - Moveable Partition Specialists

Leading partitioning specialist, Style, has launched a new glass sliding wall solution for balconies and terraces (BSW). Transforming a balcony into functional space, glass panels are used to enclose the area, creating a barrier against weather and noise without impeding the view. On fine days, the upper section of the glass panels can be neatly folded and stacked to one side, allowing people to sit out and enjoy the sunshine. For terrace rooms that open straight out into a garden or external seating area, Style’s new glass sliding wall allows the boundary between the two spaces to be easily removed on sunny days, whilst successfully combining weather protection with uninterrupted views of the outside during inclement weather. With a discrete guidance track that can be fitted flush to the floor, the BSW system creates a truly a streamlined aesthetic. “This is an exciting addition to our portfolio of glass moveable, folding and partitioning walls,” said Mark Cowley, who heads up the glass solutions division at Style. "With space at a premium, it makes sense to extract the maximum functionality from what is available.”“Our sliding-folding glass wall system brings the outdoors in, effectively expanding the living space in residential homes. In commercial settings, such as restaurants for example, the BSW can be used to increase capacity by making use of a balcony or external area that would otherwise only be enjoyed in good weather.” Making for a welcoming environment, even when a terrace room or balcony is entirely enclosed by the glass panels, air still circulates internally thanks to tiny, 3mm gaps between that provide continuous ventilation. Any condensation is quickly filtered outside thanks to unobtrusive drainage vents and guttering.Fitted with a sophisticated roller system, the individual glass panels also incorporate autonomous pivot point identifiers, ensuring smooth and effortless manoeuvrability every time.Ideal for residential and hospitality settings, the BSW system also offers opportunities for sports clubs, retail outlets and commercial offices, wherever a more enjoyable experience could be offered by opening-up an internal area to incorporate an outdoor space.
