Riverside Studios……undertook a huge 5-year renovation, with the aim to transform the historic building, that started its life as Riverside Film studio and has seen everyone from world-famous pop icons to the mysterious timelord, Doctor Who, through it’s doors, into a state-of-the-art entertainment destination. As the project neared completion, an outstanding task was to secure seating for its flagship theatre, Studio 2. They wanted to create a space that felt intimate and “up close” while allowing for a capacity that would help to make productions financially viable.Fun fact – the team at Riverside Studios ran, rowed and cycled 32 marathons (840 miles) in order to raise funds for their new seating!!The SolutionCreated in a bespoke width to maximise capacity, our Stanway was an easy solution for this magnificent project. We also provided removable seat numbers and row letters to allow for maximum flexibility along with bespoke stacking trolleys so that venue hosts could layout the space with ease and store any additional seating effectively. The OutcomeBoasting two theatre spaces, two cinema screens and a multitude of dining options, the venue’s transformation into a full-on entertainment and culinary destination is nothing short of spectacular. The Globe Theatre, Stockton-on-Tees - Auditorium Seating

The Globe Theatre, Stockton-on-Tees - Auditorium Seating

Audience Systems Ltd

Stockton Globe theatre is a major live entertainment destination in the Northeast of England, with a capacity of up to 3000. However, this archetypal art deco theatre had stood empty since 1997, and for 20 years before that, been used as a bingo hall. As part of a huge overhaul of the whole building carried out by Stockton Borough Council, the auditorium was sympathetically refurbished. It is now a comfortable space which recaptures the ambience of the 1930s, while being a flexible and manageable space for operators Ambassador Theatre Group. Audience Systems worked with theatre consultant Chris Baldwin to create a two-part seating package. The seats on the balcony are based on our adaptable Icon chair. With just a few special design touches, the chair has been reimagined to provide an authentic 1930s feel, but with superb comfort. Bespoke elements include a timber rail above the seat upholstery, a full depth back, a soft close seat return, and a triple routed seat number recess inspired by the “O” in the Globe’s iconic logo. A few ticket holders will also enjoy the luxury of our specially designed beverage tables. In the stalls area, the challenges were operational. Some events in the auditorium will be all seated, some part-standing. So Audience Systems were given the brief of creating a removable seating layout that could be stored under the stage. We worked with the client to engineer a solution with removable seats stacking on low trolleys, which can be lowered to under-stage level on a hydraulic orchestra pit. The seats are based on our tool-free Matrix system, where tip-up seats are slotted into removable floor bars in groups. These floor bars normally need no fixings, but the stalls in the Globe have a sloping floor, so simple stud locators help the seats win the fight against gravity. Good brakes on the transportation trolleys are a must too! Our seats have a stunning backdrop with the whole of the auditorium beautifully restored, and a striking but authentic colour scheme. The venue will truly provide a unique experience for all who visit. The photographs on this page are by Sally Ann Norman.

The Strand - wall-top seating and planters

The Strand - wall-top seating and planters

Furnitubes International Ltd

The Strand Aldwych is a busy public area well-known as a procession route between Westminster Abbey and St Paul's Cathedral. The area was historically plagued by traffic and pollution, so people were reluctant to dwell for long periods of time. The newly pedestrianised area with stone walls already in place needed public seating outside St Clement Danes Church. Coordinating the wall shape with the stone underneath was imperative, and access was needed to the lighting drivers through the platforms since the stone underneath is illuminated with LEDs. With this in mind, our design team worked collaboratively to develop a bespoke version of our modular RailRoad seating design, based on the principles where interchangeable parts can be easily removed or replaced. A RailRoad wall-top solution was created with a custom curve to match the stone walls, and the platforms have removable hatches for access when needed. The bespoke RailRoad seating solution is manufactured from our triple processed (recycled) steel and powder coated in a distinct metallic copper finish - while the iroko timbers were coated with UV protective finish in teak to maintain their natural look. This project focused on improving air quality, and our AKRI retaining planters were ideal for bringing green into the space. Their flexibility also allowed for matching the geometry of the adjacent stone benches and roads. In order to prevent damage, welded anti skates were incorporated into the solution. The project not only provides health and well-being benefits with the new public landscaped areas, it will preserve the historic character and for the first time allow people to appreciate the nearby listed buildings. The new inclusive seating spaces for people to mix in are seen to be well used as people can enjoy their lunch, meet with friends and colleagues and simply enjoy a sense of community.

The removable Matrix seats strike the right balance between being easy to set out, and feeling sturdy – once in place they don’t feel like removable seating. The process of putting the bleachers back is very smooth.”
