Anti-Ligature Covers For A Mental Health Trust In Southeast England

CONTOUR HEATING PRODUCTS LIMITED

Contour recently completed a project involving the supply and installation of 350 anti-ligature radiator covers across 15 mental health wards in Southeast England. The existing radiators posed a significant risk of harm to service users due to their outdated design. After inspecting a single ward, it was evident that all wards faced similar risks. Contour was tasked with surveying, supplying, and manufacturing anti-ligature radiator guards for each ward to ensure safety. The challenges faced by the customer included the absence of anti-ligature radiators, sharp corners posing threats, and cleanliness issues with old guards. To address these challenges, Contour installed a comprehensive range of anti-ligature covers designed to enhance safety and hygiene without compromising heating efficiency. The new covers featured small grilles and rounded edges to minimize risks and facilitate easier cleaning. The results were immediate improvements in safety and hygiene within the environments. The installed radiator guards featured IP3x grilles with 2mm holes, preventing ligature creation. Additionally, drop-down front access was incorporated for easier cleaning, and rounded corners provided enhanced protection. Overall, the project successfully mitigated risks and enhanced safety for service users in mental health environments.

Bolton Gate's Contour Shutters provide fire and security at Newcastle International Airport Duty-Free Area

Bolton Gate Company

When the Duty-Free Retail Area of the airport was recently refurbished, the design incorporated large sweeping curves on plan which also incorporated the shopfronts. The demise line of the shopfronts also entailed that they needed the facility to be closed off outside trading hours from a security point of view in addition to each unit being an individual fire compartment. Bolton Gate’s Contour shutters were specified which operate laterally and coil into a box at one end - this innovative product can describe an infinite number of bends and curves whilst closing off openings up to 100 metres wide.

In August 2020, we initiated a meeting with the designated mechanical sub-contractor for this prestigious project, the Copr Bay – Swansea Arena. Shortly thereafter, we were provided with the initial product schedule. The schedule outlined the specific requirements for MHS Monoplan Standard Type EK and Secureguard Style B LST radiators, enabling us to conduct a comprehensive quotation pricing exercise. We arranged a meeting and facilitated the presentation of Flat Fronted Panel and LST Ultra radiator samples. The objective was to determine the suitability of our products for the project.Following the submission of samples, we received confirmation that they were approved by both the client, City & County of Swansea Council, and the main contractor. In response to subsequent site alterations and resulting radiator sizing amendments we made the necessary accommodations to ensure accurate quotations and a seamless collaboration. In December 2020, after resolving the sizing amendments, we received a purchase order for the supply of radiators for the Copr Bay – Swansea Arena project. From May to November 2021, the installation of our Flat Fronted Panel and LST Ultra radiators at the Copr Bay – Swansea Arena was successfully completed. The product behind the concept was Wienerberger’s Smeed Dean London Stock brick – chosen for the project to complement the architectural character of traditional brickwork that has been used throughout the capital, including prestigious landmarks such as Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London. The brick is composed of a truly unique combination of materials; local chalk, brick earth, town ash and clinker preserved from the fire grates of Victorian London – giving it its celebrated look and finish.

Our grilles are used to make stunning architectural features such as this bridge over the waterway channel and blend perfectly complimenting stone and water in a way that only cast iron can. Introducing the first new design, cast iron, coal hole cover made in the UK for more than 50 years . Based on 4 segmented circles traditionally used during the Victorian period, this design is right up to date and proudly displays our company name. Particularly important in todays modern society is the deep rebate that allows the design to "pop out" and help generate grip for pedestrians. The circumference has cutaways to prevent water pooling. Available in a bare metal finish to rust naturally and improve grip or painted black . Weighing in at over 5KG this cover will last a lifetime and be a feature within the paving for the public today and for future generations.

Wolverton Hall: The only Folly is to call it a Folly

Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC

A folly; an ornamental building with no practical purpose built in a large garden. Whilst aspects of this definition can be applied to describe Wolverton Hall Folly, it certainly contradicts the ‘practical purpose’ element with the most appealing of purposes. Wolverton Hall Folly is a retreat for contemplation, an office away from home, a place to entertain and somewhere to enjoy the views, sun and a good book. Can we therefore call this beautiful building a folly?

Coventry Shopping Precinct - City of Culture 2021

BBS Brick and Stone Limited

Coventry is a city of movements; for struggling workers, for women, for political reformers, for ravers, for refugees. The UK's motor city. The UK's bicycle city. A center of the UK's watchmaking trade. A City of Culture that uses its past to forge its future. Coventry Moves! Its Upper Precinct was a very concrete heavy city center, partly because of the style at the time, and partly out of necessity to ensure it could be re-built as quickly as possible after the Blitz damage. The project had access to a partial fund of £7.75 million from the Government’s Local Growth Fund through Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) as part of the overall £11.8 million scheme. The package of works included; the installation of enhanced paving, street furniture, lighting, water features, planting, and the restoration of the historical Levelling Stone monument that was originally placed to commemorate the re-build of Coventry after the 1940-1942 enemy attacks. With the initial removal of the 'big green elevator' and huge concrete, once considered an eyesore, a clear view of the cathedral can now be seen, a view that has not been enjoyed since the 1970s. Almost every design element of this project included natural stone of some sort, making the relationship between the contractor Eurovia, the City Council, and BBS as the supplier, vital to complete each task on time and on budget. The circular shaped 'show stopping' water features created in a combination of both Italian Porphyry and Portuguese buff granite - a place where many people are often seen enjoying the weather. The benches and planters created in Portuguese buff granite, none of which barely had the same two pieces throughout, putting the pressure on BBS to individually CAD each and every one. The project covering the entirety of the Upper Precinct and continuing on Market Way, and Smithfield way, saw the complete removal of everything in situ and replaced with an unrecognizable scenery. All in time for Coventry Moves the City of Culture event.

NORclad have been supplying the timber cladding on this project over the past couple of years, a mixture of Tongue and Groove boards, feature fins, and open rainscreen profile.Areas for accommodation and high footfall required to also receive EuroClass B fire treatment.A HomeGrown Larch was selected for this project, having a fair spread of knots and character to be in keeping with its surrounding, a great example of selecting a suitable timber species that fits. Potentially if a timber with a lower knot content, or less defined grain would not have worked as well as this, in these natural surroundings. With English Grown Larch only being classified as slightly/ moderately durable by TRADA, the decision was made to use a high pressure treatment on all of the timber supplied for this project. NORclad Lite preservative treatment was selected, which allows the timber to naturally weather down to the silver grey as you’d expect from timber after being exposed to UV light, the treatment also offers a 30 year warranty against rot & insect attack.

A new education facility for Birmingham City University – STEAMhouse 2 - marries the restored frontage of a former Victorian industrial building with a brand new addition designed to promote interdisciplinary courses that bring together artists, scientists and engineers with input from industry.  The locally-listed red brick and terracotta façade of the 1899 Belmont cycle works was preserved after a disastrous fire gutted the building in 2007. That now fronts a new brick building the rear elevation of which boasts Corporate W20 windows in black plus two fire-rated Crittall windows and two fire-rated Crittall doors installed in a fire escape. Beyond this is a new four and five-storey building comprising workshops and teaching spaces. The new and reconstructed buildings are linked by an open central space, beneath a transparent roof, to encourage interaction between students and trainees attending the new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) – based university courses on offer.  The Crittall profiles are sensitive to the industrial heritage of the original building while complementing the 21st century ethos underpinning the STEAMhouse’s ambitions.

The ProblemWe were approached in 2020 by James Tough of Butco and his team to help develop a low surface temperature radiator that would survive the ‘kick test” for Dignus healthcare. After an initial meeting and various site visits to Dignus scheme, we recognised the problem they were having with their existing radiators and controls. They had damaged and dangerous casings, broken TRVs and endless replacements.Butco had exhausted the market trying to solve the problem posed by Dignus and found other manufacturers could not fulfil all the requirements of the customer. The remit posed was in brief:A robust cover to withstand the ‘kick test’To meet all of the regulations and achieve high outputsTo be compact and discreet. They didn’t want an institutional-looking coverNot to be cost prohibitedOur SolutionButco reached out to Towelrads, who supply LST’s and other radiator products to the UK market. Upon understanding of the requirements, we investigated the possibility of producing a more robust casing with our UK Fabricator Adcam, based in the West Midlands. Straightaway Adcam produced a sample of the LST casing utilising a 2mm thick steel sheeting, rather than the 1.5mm industry standard. This proved a viable option upon testing and was put forward to the client. On the back of this successful project for Dignus Healthcare, Towelrads now offer 2mm and even 2.5mm thick casings as bespoke options in their LST range.A sample was sent to Butco to test and was approved by the customer to cover all items above. The bespoke LST’s were manufactured to match a sample site in Crown Lane, Sutton Coldfield. These have been installed and to date, there have been no issues with the covers, radiators, or internal controls. We are working on other schemes with Dignus and have been able to offer this product to other clients. The process of testing the radiators and running them on a sample site has allowed Towelrads to promote these further. It was thanks to Butco’s enquiry that made this possible.

Clyde Campus

Forterra Building Products

The ChallengeThe redevelopment of Clyde Campus is part of the fifth stage of a larger programme initiated by Glasgow City Council to re-build and modernise its pre-12 and special education estate. At the heart of the project is the Council’s desire to create an effective educational environment which takes a holistic approach to the design process by combining social, economic and environmental goals, resulting in a sustainable architecture, culture and landscape. The SolutionThe architectural response to the site has a central assembly hall and four radiating wings. This radial plan divides the site and avoids large elevations to the street edge, which is surrounded by low-density, two-storey housing. The design aims to create a new, accessible, attractive, welcoming and sustainable campus with shared community amenities with clear public frontage to the building. The facades have been composed to reflect the differing functions in each wing through choice of material and scale. The majority of the building is clad in a bespoke blend of Forterra’s Dark Tame Valley and County Multi Dragfaced Blend bricks, which evokes a sense of solidity and robustness. Lightweight metal cladding breaks up the brick expanse, helping to identify the campus’s different functions. The BenefitsThe new campus has successfully brought together nursery and primary age schooling under one roof with a range of enhanced facilities for pupils and for the wider community. The choice of building materials is an integral part of defining the different areas on site, from gym halls, to Early Years and classroom blocks.
