The break out area at the new Isaac Newton Academy presents an impressive social space for students and staff alike. Seating areas, table tennis tables and decorative planters transform the space into a calming retreat. The arrival of the first wet weather soon led the school to reconsider the design of its popular social space. Not only was overcrowding of the indoor areas becoming problematic, it was disappointing to see the valuable outdoor space go to waste.It was vital that the design of the canopy complemented the contemporary aesthetic of Isaac Newton Academy, while still ensuring functionality. In light of this requirement, Streetspace recommended an ORION Barrel Vault Fabric Canopy.Barrel vault design provides a wide, clear-span area and an ambient sense of space. Tensile membrane canopies require less structural steel columns to support the roof in comparison to traditional building materials. The space therefore benefits from minimal obstruction and clutter, guaranteeing a free flow of movement.PVC tensile membrane provides a flexible solution for the canopy covering; perfect for use throughout the day, as well as during darker evenings. In daylight, the semi-translucent fabric provides shade to protect occupants from UV radiation, while enough natural light is still able to penetrate to facilitate a pleasing, softly lit space. In the evenings, an ambient environment is created with the use of artificial lighting, further broadening the functionality of the canopy.Tensile membrane offers excellent acoustic properties, absorbing a considerable proportion of noise, limiting external sound pollution. THE BRIEFBespoke manufacturer and installerLangley Design were chosen by Willmott Dixon to lead the way on the multimillion pound Landmark building at Hans Price Academy. This was part of a wider £14 million renovation project at the college in Weston-super-Mare.Willmott Dixon needed a bespoke manufacturer and installer who knew what they were doing and who could offer a product and service that far exceeded expectations. WHAT WE DIDOutdoor timber canopyLangley Design's bespoke manufacturing capabilities enabled an L shaped timber canopy to be made which spans the length of the buildings. These canopies offer the end user so many different options such as outdoor dining, general student socialising, teaching and now even social distancing (a word not even in our vocabulary when these were installed).THE RESULTExterior picnic tablesWe also provided some further products from our Sheldon range, these included picnic tables and benches for the children to use for the social and dining activities listed as a benefit of the canopy.We also provided our galvanised and powder coated litter bins here to finish the external areas off.Our prompt and efficient installation team also enabled Willmott Dixon to complete the project nine weeks early.

In an opera production a 3D HDD projector was supposed to project images onto the stage during performances. Standing as it did on a trolley, which was to be moved over a tiled floor, the projector was virtually unusable. The problem was solved by combining an increase in the projector frame to 10 kg with the assembly of pneumatic levelling mounts PLM-1 from ACE. PLM is located in the low-frequency range and is primarily used when measuring tables, test equipment and high-performance machines need to be perfectly isolated.

It is a building with challenging requirements: many guests in a small space who need to be catered for, yet wish to enjoy peace and quiet and also need to be able to leave the building quickly in case of emergency. This means that doors are particularly important.

Bioethanol fires require no chimney or flue, give off no harmful emissions and are 95% energy efficient. They are available in a large selection of designs for living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and gardens. A good example is the home of Bury resident Anthony Norman, who chose an Italian kitchen and a British made bedroom from local dealer Icon, both featuring table-top bioethanol fires. The New Hollies transport cafe has been serving drivers and travellers on Watling Street (A5) since 1933. The cafe has grown significantly and hundreds of HGVs visit each week creating a demand for robust, sustainable parking. Due to the high water table, permission was granted but with the restrictions to keep the water level at the pre development level. It became clear that permeable paving would meet the requirements. ABG Truckcell was used as surfacing with Terrex as a filtration textile. Truckcell is a heavy duty plastic paver able to withstand the forces exerted by multiple wheeled vehicles.

This case study is courtesy of Play To Measure and Priory Park Community School. The school sought a specialist play company to convert an unused piece of land into an innovative learning and play environment. Their aim was to merge education, creativity, fun, nature, and most importantly safety, in one holistic design.Before the project commenced, the outdoor space at Priory Park Community School was mostly inaccessible and overgrown, resulting in underutilisation.Play To Measure faced a significant challenge due to the lack of engaging features and safety concerns while transforming this space into an area promoting both learning and play. Ensuring students’ safety while encouraging outdoor learning, creativity, and physical activity was a top priority in the planning process.To address these challenges, Play To Measure proposed a comprehensive solution. This involved creating an outdoor classroom, pond, climbing frame with a slide, hammocks, and more. They also added rubber grass matting underneath suitable structures to cushion falls and ensure the safety of the children.The initial phase involved clearing the overgrown grass and plants, providing the team with a blank canvas to work on. With the area cleared, the team commenced transforming the design into reality.They created a pond filled with self-oxygenating plants to attract various wildlife, making it a potential habitat. Adjacent to the pond, they placed a boat, offering a unique relaxation and learning space.Above the pond, they installed a custom-built Outdoor Classroom with a bridge, serving as a dedicated educational space with a canopy for year-round use.In proximity to the classroom, two handmade hammocks were installed with our protective rubber grass mats underneath, ensuring a safe surface under this unique relaxation area.The subsequent phase involved designing, constructing, and installing a unique climbing frame. Considering the large size of the basement area and its proximity to the River Thames, Newton Specialist Contractor Stonehouse were called in to provide a complete waterproofing system for the structure.At this private property in South London, the plan was to build a new basement extending below the entire footprint of the house and into the rear garden, incorporating a swimming pool, recreational spaces and wine cellar.However, considering the close proximity to the River Thames and the high water table, Newton Specialist Contractor Stonehouse were called in to provide a complete waterproofing system for the entire structure.Considering the size of the basement area, the high water table, the geographical location close to the River Thames, and the fact that the structure was created using underpinning, the risk of water penetration in this basement was extremely high. Stonehouse recommended the most failsafe solution, the Newton CDM System.Firstly, they installed Newton 508 membrane to all internal walls and the floor, using Newton's ancillary products to fix the membrane securely and seal the system. Drainage channels were also created using Newton Basedrain, feeding into a sump chamber containing two NP750 pumps, a higher capacity model capable of dealing with large volumes of water.Finally, where the basement extended beyond the house's footprint, a liquid waterproofing membrane was used on the new external roof.Stonehouse is one of Newton's oldest and most experienced specialist contractors, and they showed their expertise here by delivering a dry, safe basement for the client that could then be transformed into a beautiful new part of their home. Furthermore, the installation was backed by Stonehouse's 10-year guarantee, for complete peace of mind.

The National Grid Site on the Isle of Grain is a very sensitive environmental area, from the site liquefied pressurised gas and electricity is distributed to the Southern UK, France and Belgium. Site required a sewage plant able to treat raw sewage to 15:15:10 standard. Due to the high water table, plant had to be installed above ground. Discharge from the sewage plant was directly into the Thames/Medway estuary. The Marsh UP was installed replacing the existing sewage plant that failed consent standards. The plant has performed better than the 15:15:10 standard set by the EA.

Franke were thrilled to provide products to one of the UK’s leading theme parks and attractions for a recent refurbishment, which consisted of a large male toilet room, a large female toilet room and a less abled disabled washroom. Water conservation was also an important aspect. Franke supplied a number of self closing Pureline taps, which only release water for a controlled amount of time, bringing down water usage in the washroom. Stainless steel table top soap dispensers (SD80) were also supplied, removing the possibility of spillages onto the vanity units and making the area easier to clean.

From humble beginnings Newcastle Airport has grown vastly and expects 9.4m passengers annually by 2035. Increasing the capacity of the existing storage lagoons is needed to continue meet current and future airport requirements. Due to the high water table there is a risk ground water pressure would cause uplift of pond liners. ABG Pozidrain was recommended to remove any uplift, manage groundwater and allow ground gases to escape. Due to being puncture resistant it also protected the liner. The multiple functions of Pozidrain removed the need for imported stone reducing vehicles to site by 200 and increasing material savings.

Accoya was recommended by distributor Tecade for use in the construction of the building. Tecade recommended the use of Accoya to ensure that the building would sit well in its natural surroundings, while also maintaining its structural integrity in the harsh environment. Accoya was used for all applications throughout the home including the façade, interior doors, indoor & outdoor furniture, terrace, garage door & railings. The architect specified 28mm X 150mm of Accoya for the outdoor terrace & constructed the terrace furniture using around 1 cubic meters of Accoya to build 3 tables & 36 chairs for external use.

The City Academy, Bristol is a specialist sports college that offers its students, and the surrounding community, some superbly equipped facilities. From an impressive sports centre with three indoor halls, to tennis courts, football pitches and athletics track. It boasts some of the finest sporting facilities in the south west.Used by the Academy students during the day and open to the public in the evening and weekends, the sports halls are in near continuous use. They can accommodate activities such as basketball, netball, volleyball, korfball, handball, badminton and table tennis and can also be used as one huge indoor arena for events and competitions.

Furnitubes designed and manufactured bespoke Akri raised planter beds and integrated seating, framed in corten steel – which we chose for its long term durability in outdoor environments. It’s also a great choice where damage to the steelwork might occur. Planter units were sealed using a protective sealant in order to avoid staining on users’ clothing and the surrounding paving and surfaces. Picnic table units were incorporated to provide adequate resting space for public use. Providing a whole range of new playing experiences, Russell Gardens has been transformed for the betterment and wellness of the local community.

"You can hear it and feel the difference as soon as you walk in and start to talk"Due to new hybrid working we installed VC kit that better enabled remote calls and meetings for staff. When in-person colleagues around the meeting table would be in conversation with each other, audio would often cut out for those joining remotely, no matter how many speakers and microphones we had in the room. Generally, this was a poor meeting experience for those joining online and we had received feedback about this from our staff. Ceilings in the room are high with concrete beams and so this was probably contributing to the issues.

The LNER Stadium is home to York Football Club and York Knights Rugby League team.The 8,500 capacity stadium was developed by main contractor, Buckingham Group in what was a £40 Million project and completed in 2020. THE PROJECTNine Elms Point is a private residential development in the heart of one of London’s most exciting new districts. The project is located just minutes from the new development at Battersea Power Station, a short tube ride to Oxford Circus and next to the planned Nine Elms tube station.The Nine Elms Point development features a collection of 645 one, two, three and four-bedroom apartments and penthouses that have been spread across seven distinctive buildings.It is yet another high profile site that UK market leaders The Safety Letterbox Company have been delighted to be involved in.THE PRODUCTThe project features a large mail room that is used by both mail delivery personnel, property staff and residents to both post and retrieve mail. Mailboxes have been both recessed into the exterior walls of the room and used as freestanding islands with back-to-back mailboxes to maximise the available space.The freestanding mailboxes were supplied with modified table supports to allow for later fitting of wood cladding to product a high-quality finish of the central islands.Detailed drawings were supplied to the client to show the exact layout and dimensions of each of the mailbox banks so that the development team could prepare the location for the products. Once the mailboxes and support tables had been manufactured, the specialist Installation Team at The Safety Letterbox Company transported and installed the mailboxes into the project, using their CSCS carded install team.The mailbox used for the project was specified after the initial project enquiry which stated the available space and how many mailboxes were required. The COM 2 (194) mailbox features a height of 194mm which was the ideal product for this project, selected from a vast range of quality SLB products to choose from.The mailboxes used in this project are finished in a polyester powder coated Satin Silver (RAL 9006) colour. Each mailbox is individually engraved with numbering that corresponds to the address of each resident.

Sandringham High School in St Albans invited proposals for a covered walkway between their two dining halls along with some canopies over outside seating areas. With a very significant level change to contend with you can envisage how this project could have turned out; with two covered walkways ascending above the sets of steps at each end and a separate rectangular canopy between these walkways to cover the picnic tables. Contrast this with the canopy design achieved by the Streetspace team! An ambient asymmetric structure spanning the whole space vastly increasing its usefulness and aesthetic appeal.The School leadership Team have been sufficiently impressed to employ Streetspace projects to cover another area between buildings complete with a servery pod provide further covered dining and social space. A testament to the success of the environment created by a Triton canopy.

THE PROJECTThe Wall of Colour project features a small bank of colourful mailboxes using an in front / out front posting and retrieval method. The small bank of mailboxes are wall mounted with additional support from a set of cantilever support stands to hold the mailboxes steady and eliminate the need for a support table or legs to be used.Each mailbox has been engraved with numerical identification and infilled with a contrasting white colour. THE PROJECTFulwith Mill in Harrogate is located in an exclusive upmarket area – so much in fact, in 2019 Fulwith Mill Lane was named by Zoopla as the most expensive road in Yorkshire. For this new build project, Fosroc were asked to specify suitable products for the waterproofing aspect of the basement construction. The main challenges included a high water table, high clay concentration in surrounding area leading to a perched water table, and potential for hydrostatic pressure against the basement construction. Howard Civil Engineering was the main contractor for the project, with Fosroc being selected as materials supplier due to a long standing relationship between the companies, and a number of previous deployments.THE SOLUTIONFully bonded Proofex Engage membrane was used on the basement slab, combined with Supercast Watertight Concrete Powder (WCP) to provide a high level of resilience to both water ingress and potential defects. Supercast WCP is a concrete admixture that reduces porosity and permeability, increasing water and corrosion resistance. The vertical elements were cast in Supercast WCP with Proofex 3000, to provide a greater degree of flexibility to enable the contractor to install effectively in the tight spaces around the site, and around the complex shape of the structure. Proofex 3000 is a cold applied, highly flexible waterproof membrane – ideal for application of membrane around intricate building features.THE BENEFITSThe products specified for this project provided multi-layered and seamless protection to the underground element of this exclusive residence to meet stringent BS8102 Type A waterproofing standards. Proofex Engage provides water, water-vapour and gas protection to water excluding structures such as basements, and protects concrete from aggressive ground salts, chemicals and hydrocarbons. It is supplied with a self-adhesive strip on one side of the roll to provide sealed laps and comes with a range of auxillary products (for this project, Supercast SW20 Hydrophillic Waterstop) to form a complete waterproofing solution and simplify application for the contractor. Its unique mesh system bonds permanently to concrete, remaining in pace even if settlement takes place – the exceptionally high bond strength of Proofex Engage - 2.96kN, sets it apart from the competition, at 70% stronger than the leading chemically bonded membrane.

Setting a new standard for students living in Bristol.The development features a rooftop garden (known as the ‘Sky Meadow’) providing breath-taking views across the city of Bristol, on-site parking and a central location allowing you easy access to the very best of the city life.This project uses both a bank of mailboxes to securely store mail deliveries and a high-capacity MEFA Mega parcel box which allows for large parcel deliveries to be stored in a secure location.THE MAILBOXESThe mailboxes used on this project are located in the reception lobby area allow easy access for residents to retrieve their mail as they pass on the way to their home.The mailbox model used is the MODA Horizontal mailbox, finished in a high-quality stainless steel 304L grade. The bank is freestanding fixed to the floor using table supports designed and manufactured to carry the weight of the mailboxes and securely hold them in one position, whether empty or full to capacity of deliveries.The mailboxes are an in front / out front type, allowing for mail to delivered and retrieved through the front face of the post box.The mailboxes are fitted with surround cladding on either side of the bank and the top of the unit, with this cladding the table support finished in a contrasting black PPC colour finish. Each mailbox has been engraved with a number to match the apartment ID, allowing both mail delivery personnel and residents to easily identify which mailbox is the correct item to use.Safety Letterbox supplied and installed the whole solution.PARCEL DELIVERYParcel deliveries are secured in the project by a single MEFA Mega parcel box, allowing up to 96 litres of mail to be securely stored at one time. Anaconda Cut, also known as 100 Greengate, is a 44 storey apartment building. Situated next to the River Irwell, it is the tallest building in the City of Salford and one of the tallest in Greater Manchester.It is home to 349 elegant rental apartments, including luxury penthouses. Artform were asked to provide external seating, tables & planters for 2 roof terraces. Our popular range of out-sider products were considered due to the lightweight nature for manoeuvring, material durability and a wide range of colour options.A key factor in the design discussion was the end client's concerns regarding the use of timber products for a variety of reasons, including maintenance resulting in alternative materials being sourced. One of the key benefits of the Loop range of products is that they don't need to be permanently fixed down and can also be filled with either sand or in this instance water, adding ballast weight, taking a product with an initial weight of 37kg to in excess of 250kg.

THE PROJECTThe Imperial College London project features multiple banks of freestanding mailboxes designed and manufactured to offer a secure postal storage solution for both students and staff whilst conforming to the style branding guidelines of the university.The products used in the university project are the popular H1 horizontal mailboxes, combining a classic design with an affordable pricing and robust materials. The mailboxes are finished in a Dark Sapphire Blue (RAL 5003) that matches the design specification that was set out by the project architect. This shade of blue used for the products matches the existing blue used in the Imperial College London logo.Each postbox has been engraved with numbering to easily allow for mail to be deposited and retrieved from the correct mailbox. Shooters Sports bar is a modern sports bar located in Neath Town Centre, a principal area of Port Talbot, Wales.  A popular venue, well known for its 6 screens showing live sports, licensed bar and pool, American pool and snooker tables.Delta Registered Installers, Tywi Damp Proofing were first approached to offer remedial assistance with a section of wall which was experiencing severe water ingress.The structure being of reinforced concrete and old wall construction was allowing water ingress via cracks in the structure.Most faults in older structures which allow water ingress are either damaged or deteriorating mortars.Any cracks in the brickwork or substrates will also allow water to enter a structure and would need addressing in creating a Grade 3, habitable space under BS8102:2009 “Code of practice for protection of below ground structures against water from the ground”.Prior to proposing remedial works, ground water assessment, drainage and associated risk assessments were all undertaken.

To fulfil the requirements of BS8102:2022 and BS 8485:2015+A1:2019 a strategy to develop a specification which combines structural waterproofing and ground gas protection were required for this refurbishment project.The project involved creating additional living space to an existing mid terrace Victorian property in W12. The site of the property, whilst not being located on contaminated land was identified as being potentially at risk, it was near what is classed as contaminated land (an old brick yard).To satisfy Building Control requirements gas protection measures were required to meet BS 8485:2015+A1:2019.Site investigations at former brickworks and landfill sites are within expected UK guidelines for contamination. Ground investigations incorporate both soil sampling, ground gas and groundwater monitoring.In accordance with Table 3 of BS 8485:2015+A1:2019 a residential building is classed as a Type A building, creating a “high risk” requirement for ground gas protection. With the structure requiring a Grade 3 habitable environment attention as required to offer a system which meets all requirements.

THE BRIEFDigital skills centre landscaped courtyard at Cirencester CollegeLangley Design worked with E G Carter & Co on the new £4 million digital skills centre at Cirencester College and we were pleased to be able to offer our services on this local project. There was a requirement here for some curved timber seating for the newly landscaped courtyard areas. WHAT WE DIDPremium seating facilities for studentsWe manufactured and installed our Sheldon benches SBN307 in Class 4 Treated Redwood timber with a Dark Oak stain to give a more premium finish. The client opted for the more stylish flat legs for the benches which were powder coated to RAL8040 to tie in with the building façade. We also supplied our smaller Sheldon Cube SBN316 to provide individual seating facilities for the students. THE RESULTAn ongoing relationship with the collegeThe college were really pleased with our products and approached us directly a few months later to provide some picnic tables and benches to their roof terrace for the staff to enjoy the outdoors during breaktimes.The same material was chosen for these products to ensure consistency across the site.
