Tactile paving flags are used to assist the blind and partially sighted people at pedestrian crossings.

There are two types of crossing zones, controlled and uncontrolled.

  • Controlled crossing zones include zebra crossings, pelican crossings, puffin crossings, toucan crossings and traffic signals with pedestrian phases.
  • Uncontrolled crossing zones relate to side road crossings, busy crossovers, crossings away from junctions, kerb-to-kerb humps and traffic signals without a pedestrian phase.

The flags are available in three colour finishes to enable the partially blind to distinguish between different types of crossing zones.

  • Red relates to controlled crossing zones.
  • Buff is available to distinguish uncontrolled crossing zones.
  • Grey is manufactured for the Republic of Ireland (ROI) market.

Tactile Flags:

  • Blister paving is used to identify pedestrian crossings with dropped kerbs.
  • Corduroy paving is used to denote a hazard such as the top/bottom of a flight of steps.

Deterrent Flags:

Used to deter vehicle or pedestrian traffic.
