Description

Promat VERMICULUX®-S is a non-combustible calcium silicate board reinforced with selected fibres and fillers, is resistant to the effects of moisture and will not be subject to physical or performance deterioration when used in damp or humid conditions. The strong rigid board can be installed before the building is watertight. It is classified A1 non-combustible according to BS EN 13501-1. Promat VERMICULUX®-S is off-white in colour and has a smooth sanded surface on one face with a lightly honeycombed texture on the reverse face.

Up to 240 minutes of fire resistance can be achieved depending on the thickness of material used, the dimensions of the steelwork being protected, the number of layers used and the limiting temperature of the steel section.

Manufacturer guidance

Etex Building Performance Limited warrants that our passive fire protection products and component parts, when installed in the building originally designed, built and unaltered in accordance with the conditions and procedures set out in this specification document and associated CAD drawings, the Vermiculux®-S Product Brochure; and any specific technical recommendations made in relation to the above project, shall be durable and free from defects due to faulty manufacturing or factory workmanship.

The system must be installed by a 3rd party accredited fire protection contractor, and where included in the specification, solely with proprietary products and components as supplied by Etex Building Performance Limited.

The scope of this warranty will be dependent on the application and the environment in which the products are being installed.

Metal Angle 50 x 25 x 0.7 mm and 3.7 x 16 mm Shot-fire nails or M4.2 x 13 mm self-drilling self-tapping wafer head screws.

Guidance for specification option:

At maximum 300 mm centres.

Casings are installed using metal angles fixed to the steel flange, for SHS/RHS and PFC beams angles fixed to the wall. Additional metal angle framing is fixed to the substrate to support flange boards.

Insulation

Low density (10–30 kg/m³) glass mineral wool.

Linings

Inner and outer layers: Promat VERMICULUX®-S board thickness determined by section factor (A/V), fire resistance period and limiting steel temperature.

Manufacturer guidance

For double layer encasements the thicker board should be applied as the inner layer and joints between layers must be staggered by minimum 600 mm.

Boards can be left untreated or painted. Board joints on adjacent faces staggered by minimum 500 mm. Board thicknesses over 50 mm are installed as a double layer, minimum stagger between layers 250 mm. Refer to ST VLUX 035 for double layer encasement details. Where more than one layer of board is used in a casing, the thicker layer should be applied first.

Fasteners

Direct Fix to Concrete or Blockwork: Minimum M4 screws into metal plugs, non-combustible concrete anchors or concrete screws (by others).
Fixing to Metal Angle: Minimum M4 CSK Self Tapping Screws.
Fixing to Board Edge: Minimum M4 High Thread Screws.

Guidance for specification option:

  • Fixing to Metal Angle: Minimum M4 CSK Self Tapping Screws at maximum 200 mm centres. Screw length to provide minimum penetration of 10 mm through the angle.
  • Fixing to Board Edge: Minimum M4 High Thread Screws at maximum 200 mm centres. Screw length to provide minimum penetration of 30 mm into the board edge.

System accessories

FSi Promat Pyrocoustic® Fire Resistant Sealant.

Guidance for specification option:

Designed to seal any slight gaps at interfaces between the boards and the substrate, which have low movement requirements (±7.5%). Contains no solvents or halogen compounds.

Fixing to substrate: Where a column abuts concrete or blockwork wall, metal angle is fixed directly to the concrete wall with M4 screws into metal plugs, non-combustible concrete anchors or concrete screws (by others) at maximum 300 mm centres. Fixing length to provide a minimum penetration of 30 mm into the substrate.
