Description

NedZink ZINC Standing Seam Roofing System

NedZink produces titanium zinc in accordance with EN 988, an alloy based on electrolytically refined zinc with a minimum purity of 99.995% Zn (Z1 grade per EN 1179) and small additions of copper, titanium, and aluminium. This alloy provides high durability, excellent formability, and outstanding resistance to weathering. NedZink titanium zinc is maintenance-free and available under the brand names NedZink NATURAL, NedZink NEO, NedZink NOIR, NedZink NUANCE, and NedZink Pro-Tec.

The NedZink Standing Seam Roofing System is a fully supported metal roof system offering a durable, watertight, and visually refined finish. Suitable for both new-build and refurbishment projects, the system delivers long-term performance in a wide range of climates and environments. The standing seam design enables thermal movement of the metal while maintaining superior weather resistance and a distinctive linear aesthetic.

The system can be installed in single or double lock seam configurations, depending on the roof pitch and exposure. The double lock standing seam provides enhanced watertightness, making it suitable for low-pitch applications (minimum 3°), while the angle or single lock seam is recommended for steeper roof slopes.

NedZink standing seam panels are custom-fabricated to meet individual project requirements. Panels can be supplied in continuous lengths to cover roof slopes from ridge to eaves, eliminating the need for horizontal joints and enhancing weather performance. Shorter panels may be used when transport or site conditions require, without compromising visual continuity or system integrity.

  • Maximum recommended panel length: up to 15 metres, depending on site logistics and roof geometry
  • Standard panel widths: 430 mm and 530 mm
  • Custom widths: available from 100 mm to 600 mm, depending on design and structural considerations

This flexibility allows architects to achieve various visual rhythms and seam spacings, from narrow refined lines to wider contemporary profiles, adapting to both traditional and modern architectural styles.

Seam Height

The standing seam height refers to the vertical rib formed where adjacent panels interlock. The standard seam height is 25 mm, providing a sleek, low-profile appearance suitable for most roof designs. For greater visual depth or enhanced water resistance, a 38 mm seam height is available upon request.

NedZink Pro-Tec is a protective coating on the back side for application on either cold or hot roof constructions. This protective coating protects the zinc against the effects of water vapour and other substances. The good processing properties of zinc are retained. NedZink Pro-Tec can be used in all standard systems, but is mainly recommended for unventilated, damp proof warm roof constructions

The breather membrane must comply with EN 13859-1 for roofs and must also be CE compliant.

The breather membrane must be fully supported, lapped and sealed and then further sealed to all surrounding abutments and surface penetrations.

Insulation

Traditional standing seam systems do not have any specific requirement with regard to the insulation.

Insulation must be structurally self-supporting or supported when installed so that it will not sag and form unvented voids or cause loss of thermal efficiency. An insulation used as a directly supporting substrate must have a minimum compression strength of 50kPa (0.5 kg/cm2) with deformation limited to a maximum of 10%. The insulation must also be dimensionally stable up to 100°C.

All insulation must be kept dry and protected prior to metal covering being laid.

Guidance for specification option:

A compatible Primer to be used on porous substrates.

Some manufacturer's recommendations for warm cladding or roof constructions require a minimum of 5 screw fixings per M2 through the VB, therefore this type of VB must have the properties of self-sealing around screw fixings when penetrated. In this instance, it is accepted that a VB with an aluminium foil face and a polymer bitumen core and self-adhesive properties offers the best performance. Alutrix & Metal Shield comply with this requirement.

Manufacturer guidance

Vapour Barrier membranes must comply with EN 13859-1 for walls or roofs and must also be CE compliant.

For fully supported metal cladding or roofs, the VB must have a minimum water vapour resistance of 4000MNs/g and comply to BS SO 12572. The VB must have a resistance against a supported column of water 2M high for a period of 15 mins to comply with DIN EN 20811.

All cladding or roofs must have a Vapour Barrier regardless of being ventilated, unventilated cold or warm in design. The VB must be positioned behind/ below the insulation and on the warm side of the construction.

Guidance for specification option:

The European Standard is EN 636-3 - for use in exterior conditions including liquid, water or water vapour in damp but ventilated locations. Service Class 3 in Euro Code 5 covers plywood to be used in climate conditions leading to a higher moisture content than in service class 2.

The minimum board thickness must be 18 mm (or layers of thinner boards that combine to achieve the minimum 18 mm thickness for curved coverings). The plywood face laminate must be free of knots and defects and should as a minimum be "good one side". Shuttering ply is not suitable.

18 mm OSB-3 or better (oriented strand board).

Guidance for specification option:

Also known as sterling board, has been developed over the past 20 years and is formed by layered flakes of wood in specific orientation. Its wooden strips are compressed and bonded together with wax and resin adhesive.

It is comparatively cost effective and therefore has been increasingly used as a substrate for cladding or roofing systems. However, care must be exercised when used as a substrate under traditional metal cladding or roofing and should be protected from moisture during construction. It is advised that screw fixings are used to ensure good pull-out values.

24 mm timber or sarking board decking.

Guidance for specification option:

It complies with 8S5268: Part 2 (strength class SC3), or EN 1611-1:1999 (sawn timber normally with a maximum moisture content of 22%). There are some woods which are not compatible with cladding or roofing metals, due to high acid content.

UK recommended practice is a range of 18 mm to 25 mm thickness, in widths of 100 mm to 125 mm and laid with 3–5 mm gaps between the boards parallel to the eaves. In some cases, because of the nature of the building's structure, a diagonal boarding layout is used.

It is particularly important to note that timber protectives, preservatives and adhesives used in plywood board construction can react with the cladding or roofing metal and if applicable, suitable separation layers must be used.

Rigid insulation.

Guidance for specification option:

Insulation must be structurally self-supporting or supported when installed so that it will not sag and form unvented voids or cause loss of thermal efficiency. An insulation used as a directly supporting substrate must have a minimum compression strength of 50 kPa (0.5 kg/cm²) with deformation limited to a maximum of 10%. The insulation must also be dimensionally stable up to 100C. Warm cladding or roof fixings including stainless toothed plate and sliding clip, plastic peg and fixing screws are used in conjunction with an insulated deck.

Composite panel.

Guidance for specification option:

The composite panel is constructed from factory produced interlocking steel or aluminium panels, encasing an insulation core (PIR or other). The panels are laid across the wall or roof supporting rafters or rails.

The interlocking joints must be sealed with gaskets or sealant and taped according to the manufacturer's recommendations, with sealed metal closures to hips ridges, verges, eaves and penetrations. The total area and abutments must be sealed airtight. 0.7 mm thick outer face is recommended. This type of construction gives a good vapour sealed substrate and can be quickly constructed.

Non-combustibles.

Guidance for specification option:

Alternative non-combustible supporting substrates, such as metal profiled sheets and fire rated sheathing boards are now commonplace due to changes in building regulations. These are a direct substitute for plywood or similar and should be evaluated based on their pull-out values. When a metal profiled sheet is used, fixings must be rivets or self-drilling screws.
