Details:

IAE’s Prosafe Playground Gate is a self-closing gate specifically designed to comply with BS EN 1176 Playground Equipment and Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) safety standards.

The Prosafe Gate is available in two standard heights of 1000 mm and 1200 mm to match IAE Playspec Playground Fencing. 

The opening between the posts is 1050 mm, wide enough to allow wheelchair access. 

Special heights and widths can be designed and manufactured on request.

The gate is made from carbon steel which is hot dip galvanized to BS EN 1461 standards. A RAL 1021 yellow polymer powder coating finish is applied as standard to provide high visibility for those with visual impairment. Other colours are available on request.

The gate frame is made from 50x50 SHS and 50x30 RHS with a 16 mm diameter round bar infill.

To comply with the BS EN 1176 Playground Equipment and RoSPA safety standards the vertical bars are spaced at 96 mm centres. This spacing reduces the gap between the bars to 80 mm so children cannot get between the bars and become trapped.

The gate mechanism is also designed to eliminate pinch points to further reduce the chance of injury.

Installation:

The gate can be set up with either left or right hand opening.

For the safety of children moving around inside, and to prevent loose dogs accessing the play area by pushing the gate open, the manufacturer recommends the gate is installed so it opens out and away from the play area. Exceptions to this include circumstances where the open gate would cause an additional hazard, such as it opening across a footpath.

The speed of the self closing mechanism should be set on installation, with the gate not closing in less than five seconds. This makes wheelchair access easier, stops the gate closing on slow moving children.

To ensure accurate installation and functionality, a tie bar is supplied to connect the posts and guarantee the correct gate opening is achieved. The tie bar is set into the ground on installation so it doesn’t obstruct the opening between the posts.

The Prosafe Gate should be installed with the leaf set between 60 mm and 110 mm above the ground. This will restrict access underneath the gate while minimising the risk of creating a foot trap.

Self closing mechanism details:

The self closing of the gate is driven by a Ryobi 30-21 NHO Closer Body built into the bottom of the gate frame and set on the hang stile side.

The closing speed is adjustable via two control screws positioned on the underside of the gate. This should be set on installation and adjusted if required during the 6-month maintenance check.

As well as automatically closing the gate, the hydraulic self closing unit provides other benefits, including:

• Limiting the range of motion to 90 degrees, to prevent children being trapped behind the gate against the fence.
• Prevents the gate from being swung open at speed and potentially hitting someone nearby.
• Prevents the gate from being slammed shut and hitting anyone passing through the gate.
