Vertical active fire and smoke curtain barrier providing up to 120 minutes integrity and EW120 radiation control, achieving 10.7 kW/m² at 120 minutes, tested to BS 8524-1 and installed to BS 8524-2.
Vertical active fire and smoke curtain barrier designed for large internal openings requiring robust fire compartmentation and smoke control. Suitable for protected means of escape, atria, lobbies, reception areas, corridor separation, openings in fire-resisting walls, boundary protection, escalators, stairwells, lift shafts and lift lobbies.
Commonly specified within hospitals and healthcare facilities, schools and universities, hotels, high-rise buildings, mixed-use developments, commercial offices, retail environments, stadia, museums and galleries, as well as transport infrastructure, industrial and utility installations. Also appropriate for defence, custodial, policing and secure environments where large-span fire and smoke containment is required without compromising architectural intent.
The Flameshield EW120 Max/S Vertical Active Fire and Smoke Curtain Barrier is an electrically operated, gravity fail-safe fire and smoke control system engineered for large opening applications, delivering up to 120 minutes fire integrity and EW120 radiation performance. Radiation levels remain below 15 kW/m², achieving 10.7 kW/m² at 120 minutes, supporting tenability requirements and protected escape routes within complex building layouts.
The barrier assembly incorporates a carbon steel barrel and integrated 24 V d.c. electric motor, with a high-performance flexible fire curtain fabric capable of withstanding temperatures in excess of 1000°C. Designed specifically to accommodate larger spans, the EW120 Max/S is available in standard sizes up to 10,000 mm wide by 4,000 mm high, while maintaining barrel deflection compliance with BS 6323-5. A two-section bottom rail ensures controlled descent, stability and reliable gravity fail-safe deployment in the event of power or system failure.
The Flameshield EW120 Max/S offers enhanced architectural integration, with the ability to be concealed above ceiling lines and supplied with colour-finished end plates, guides and hoods, allowing coordination with interior finishes without compromising fire performance.
A two-stage closing operation, timed delay options and a comprehensive range of fully tested ancillary safety devices - including egress switches, access switches, obstruction detection, and heat and smoke activation - are incorporated and tested in accordance with Annex H of BS 8524-1. Optional audible and visual warning systems, including voice warning devices, can be specified to support occupant awareness during deployment.
The system is fully compliance-tested, offers low maintenance requirements, and is capable of full reset following fire testing without the need for specialist engineer intervention. Manufacture and construction align with tested assemblies and relevant sections of BS EN 16034, ensuring consistency, reliability and regulatory confidence.
Independent fire, radiation and smoke containment testing has been carried out and approved by Warrington Fire Research Centre and Exova, in accordance with BS 8524-1, BS EN 1634-1 (fire resistance and radiation performance) and BS EN 1634-3 (smoke containment).
