Vertical active fire curtain barrier providing 120 minutes integrity and up to 85 minutes radiation performance, tested to BS 8524-1 and installed to BS 8524-2.
Vertical active fire curtain barrier suitable for applications requiring BS 8524-compliant fire compartmentation and life-safety performance, including protected means of escape, atria, lobbies, reception areas, corridor separation, openings in fire-resisting walls, boundary protection, escalators, stairwells, lift shafts and lift lobbies.
Regularly specified within hospitals and healthcare facilities, schools and universities, hotels, high-rise and mixed-use developments, offices, retail environments, stadia, museums and galleries, as well as transport infrastructure such as train stations and airports. Also suitable for warehouses, factories, nurseries, shopping centres, restaurants, and defence or custodial environments where certified fire containment is critical.
The Flameshield 8524 Fire curtain is designed for multiple applications such as:
The Flameshield 8524 Vertical Active Fire Curtain Barrier is an electrically operated, gravity fail-safe fire curtain system developed to meet the life-safety requirements of BS 8524-1, with installation in accordance with BS 8524-2. The system provides 120 minutes fire integrity and up to 85 minutes radiation performance at 15 kW/m², supporting occupant tenability and protected means of escape strategies within a wide range of building types.
The barrier assembly comprises a carbon steel barrel and integrated 24 V d.c. electric motor, incorporating a high-performance flexible fire curtain fabric capable of withstanding temperatures in excess of 1000°C. Barrel deflection performance complies with BS 6323-5, ensuring stability and controlled deployment. A two-section T-profile bottom rail delivers smooth descent, consistent tension and reliable gravity fail-safe operation in the event of power or system failure.
The system incorporates internal battery back-up, ensuring continued operational readiness during mains power interruption. A two-stage closing sequence, with split-drop and timed delay options, supports phased evacuation and effective fire strategy implementation in occupied buildings.
Designed to support architectural integration, the Flameshield 8524 can be concealed above ceiling lines, minimising visual impact while maintaining certified fire performance.
A comprehensive range of ancillary safety devices is available, including egress switches, access switches, obstruction detection, and heat and smoke activation, all fully tested in accordance with Annex H of BS 8524-1. Optional audible and visual warning systems, including voice warning devices, can be specified to enhance occupant awareness during deployment.
The Flameshield 8524 is fully compliance-tested, offers low maintenance requirements, and is capable of full reset following fire testing without the need for specialist engineer attendance.
Independent testing and approval has been carried out by Warrington Fire Research Centre and Exova, including fire, radiation and smoke containment testing to BS EN 1634-1 and BS EN 1634-3, in accordance with BS 8524-1. Associated Warrington test references include WF 341175 (deflection), WF 347098 (smoke), WF 399170 (motor performance) and WF 399421 (surface spread of flame to BS 476-6 and BS 476-7).
