Application

Suitable for existing substrate or external wall insulation systems.

Description

Brick slips bonded to a profiled steel mesh.

Features and benefits:

  • WBS 15 mm Brick Slips are available in a range of colours and textures, and are bonded with adhesive mortar to a profiled steel mesh, to achieve a traditional clay brick effect over a variety of insulation boards and substrates.
  • Pistol corners are specially made for external corners and returns into reveals, showing no bonded joints and completing the look of real brick.
  • The basis of the WBS 15 mm Brick Slip Cladding System is the specially profiled galvanized steel/ stainless steel mesh, which is fixed to a suitably prepared existing substrate or external wall insulation system.
  • The mesh is fixed using specialist fasteners of the appropriate length to give a suitable penetration and fixing strength into the substrate. The profile of the mesh creates a natural brick coursing which enables the brick slips to be installed as a level course.
  • Brick slips are adhered using a specialist WBS brick slip adhesive and pointed using WBS polymer pointing mortar which is available in a range of colours.
  • Specially designed base profiles and verge trims are available to ensure that the edges of the system are sealed and watertight.

Manufacturer guidance

  • Attach base rails horizontally at the base of the system, true to line and level and in full lengths where possible. Wetherby base rails to be fixed at 300 mm centres with additional fixings at 50 mm from each end. Packing shims to be used where required to ensure base rail is true to line and level.
  • Position insulation boards horizontally to the substrate and ensure they are line and level. Stagger all vertical joints. Ensure no joints in boards at corners of windows and doors and all boards are interleaved at external corners. All joints must be tightly butted to eliminate thermal breaks.
  • Where the insulation boards butt up against dissimilar materials supply and install WBS Sealing Tape to the adjacent surface and ensure the boards are fitted tight against the seal ensuring full compression of the tape.
  • Temporarily fix insulation boards at a rate of 1 fixing per board.
  • All window heads must be base coated and scrimmed prior to the application of the brick mesh.
  • Mix WBS Scrim Adhesive with paddle mixer and 4-5 litres cold clean water. When mixed allow to stand for 4-5 mins then remix to ensure polymers are fully dispersed and use immediately.
  • Apply the WBS scrim adhesive to an even thickness of 4-6mm on all window heads. Bed the WBS Mineral Fibre Mesh into the top third of the basecoat, overlapped by 75mm. Ensure mesh is covered by the basecoat.
  • Fix WBS Brick Slip Mesh over the insulation boards using approved WBS fixings. Ensure the mesh is secured evenly over the full area of the wall to true line and level. Firtree fixings may also be used in isolated areas to aid operation.
  • - Secure the mesh at a rate of 9 fixings per sheet as per the Wetherby fixing pattern (fixing pattern located at the back of this document). Leave a 25mm gap horizontally between sheets.
  • Mix WBS Brick Slip Adhesive with clean water in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions.
  • Butter the back of the pistol corners with WBS Brick Slip Adhesive and apply to corners and door / window reveals.
  • Measure the distance between corners and / or outer edges to identify the number of bricks required per course and the subsequent width of the vertical pointing joint.
  • Cut bricks to size using a bench saw or standard tile cutter where required.
  • Apply WBS Brick Slip Adhesive to back of Brick Slips and install at the required location on the mesh in between the designed ridges. Install slips leaving a consistent joint between each (approx. 10mm).
  • Stagger all vertical joints to give the appearance of conventional brickwork or install in a stack bond pattern in accordance with the required design.
  • Once brick slips have set, point up with WBS Pointing Mortar using a pointing gun.
  • Shape mortar to desired joint type using a pointing trowel.
  • Once pointing mortar is dry, brush down the wall to remove all loose mortar etc.
