Nicholls Lane, Stone, Staffordshire

Nicholls Lane, Stone, Staffordshire

Tobermore

This housing development required a retaining wall solution but presented challenges in terms of limited space and existing services. Two retaining walls were required at the sides of the entrance to Nicholls Lane housing development. While a Geogrid Reinforced Backfill method was appropriate for the Secura Grand retaining wall on the righthand side of the development, the retaining wall on the left was met with the challenges of limited space and existing services. The highway boundary limited the amount of space available to construct the retaining wall on the left- hand side. The existing services present within the retained soil caused further complexities. On this occasion minimising excavation was crucial due to the services within the retained soil. Efficient use of land was vital as the Secura wall didn’t have the room at the back for geogrid or for no-fines concrete backfill. It was desirable that both walls at the sides of the entrance looked the same despite their different conditions.

Featuring Artro, our alternative to European-style clay pavers, this stunning mix of permeable and impermeable products helped revitalise this historic London site.Tobermore offered an aesthetically pleasing and sustainable alternative to clay brick for the hard landscaping at Poplar Riverside, meeting both the customer’s carbon reduction and budgetary requirements. The specified product, Artro, draws inspiration from traditional European clay pavers, adding warmth and modernism to the development. To meet sustainability standards, Hydropave Fusion was selected in colours that beautifully complemented the Artro range. Located on the historic gasworks site in London, Poplar Riverside is part of the ambitious new Aberfeldy Village neighbourhood, developed to support community and sustainability. A substantial portion of the project is dedicated to green space, including a two-and-a-half-acre public park, an adventure playground, and a nature area for children, with pathways planned along the River Lea. Over the next five years, the development will introduce 643 homes across four zones, ultimately providing housing for 2,800 families. Managed by Poplar Harca Housing Association, the project includes 96 shared ownership properties to support first-time buyers. The ChallengeCombining aesthetics with sustainability and performance The main objective was to find a product that mimicked the look of traditional clay brick but had a lower carbon footprint. Sustainability was a top priority, necessitating a material that minimised environmental impact while preserving the design’s aesthetic quality. Additionally, the paving design called for a variety of textures and patterns to introduce visual interest, while budget constraints demanded a cost-effective solution without sacrificing quality. The SolutionCreating a modern, sustainable landscape with Tobermore’s Artro and Hydropave Fusion products Tobermore’s carefully chosen materials played a key role in achieving a dynamic, modern aesthetic at Poplar Riverside. Artro block paving provided the desired clay-brick look with lower environmental impact, enhancing the development’s visual appeal. By thoughtfully combining Artro with Hydropave Fusion Block Paving and Tobermore Fusion kerbs, the design introduced contrasting textures and finishes that added depth, character, and modern sophistication. These elements defined individual areas while creating a cohesive and visually appealing outdoor space.  Hydropave Fusion was chosen in the colours Graphite, Mid Grey, and Oat, delivering an option that would meet the sustainability goals of the project. These tones provide a striking contrast to the Artro colours Bracken and Heather, creating a balanced and visually engaging design that blends seamlessly with the surrounding environment while allowing for water drainage. Testimonial "We chose Artro for this project because we were looking for something that gave the aesthetic of a clay brick but that carried a lower carbon footprint and price tag. In terms of product performance; it has been a perfect replacement and has allowed the product to be installed on flexible build-ups, reducing the carbon footprint of the project even further. The project required paving that would withstand high foot traffic while ensuring safe and easy access for all students, staff, and visitors, including those with mobility challenges.Springmoor Grange School has opened its doors to pupils after Esh Construction completed the £13 million build on behalf of Durham County Council. With the capacity for more than 320 primary school pupils as well as a 52-place nursery unit, Springmoor school has replaced Ox Close Primary and Ox Close Nursery Schools as demand for school provisions in Spennymoor continue to grow.  Inside the newly fitted out school are 21 teaching classrooms, a nursery, a learning community suite, library, and office spaces, as well as a staff room, toilet facilities, changing rooms, a hall and dining and kitchen facilities. The ChallengeCreate accessible school grounds with a traditional finish   Springmoor Primary School has been built to replace the existing Ox Close Primary and Ox Close Nursery Schools, providing a modern educational facility to meet the increasing demand for school places in the area. A key objective for Durham County Council in this project was to design an entrance and surrounding exterior that would not only be accessible and functional but also visually appealing while complimenting the architecture of the new building. The council sought a paving solution that would add a traditional, timeless finish to the project while ensuring the product would blend seamlessly with the contemporary aesthetic of the new building through colour selection of the paving product. Maintaining this balance between tradition and modernity was essential, all while staying within budget. This approach ensured that the exterior spaces of the new school would reflect both practicality and style, creating an inviting and cohesive environment for students, staff, and visitors alike. The SolutionEuropean clay inspired block paving Artro provided a beautiful finish in Springmoor School The project required paving that would withstand high foot traffic while ensuring safe and easy access for all students, staff, and visitors, including those with mobility challenges. The Challenge Modern paving was required for community-based retail developmentSuperValu invested €12m in a 15,200 square foot store in Dunboyne, Co Meath. The location of the retail development has great significance to the local community, having previously served as the local GAA grounds.  Extending its current product offering, the new scheme also aims to become a local community hub. The design champions a community ethos with the inclusion of a large open outdoor space. The open plan space offers flexibility for market stalls or event structures. The new development has incorporated four adjacent units, office accommodation and a café. The new state-of-the-art retail hub required high quality paving that would complement the grey brick and granite cladding of the building. The main entrance and pedestrian walkways needed to fulfil the hard landscape design aspirations.  The Solution Tobermore’s Fusion and Manhattan perfectly complement the retail hub  Tobermore presented hard landscaping options to complement the new state-of-the-art retail development. Fusion and Manhattan block paving were the perfect choice to blend with the grey brick and granite cladding building.  Laid in alternating bands, the striking granite aggregate finish of the paving responds to the staggered elevations of the building. Linear paver Manhattan was used for areas of the main walkways in mixed sizes with smaller units of Fusion laid either side. The three-colour mix of grey tones in a stretcher bond laying pattern adds character and visual appeal to the central plaza.  The grey tones do not follow a particular sequence and the linear bands do not adhere to fixed widths. The intention was to achieve a certain randomness that feels natural and softens contrast. The range of unit sizes and colours of Fusion and Manhattan helped create this vision.  Tobermore’s Fusion kerb added the finishing touch to the project with its striking granite aesthetic as a border surrounding the soft landscaping in the central plaza.

DS Properties Employ Complementary Paving Solution at Historic PumphouseDS Properties undertook the task of redeveloping The Pumphouse in Barry which previously formed part of Barry’s historic dock complex and provided one of the few hydraulic power buildings in Wales. The building had gone unused for several years but had always remained a local landmark and so the decision was made to regenerate the site for housing and commercial accommodation. Retaining the nostalgic style of the historical Pumphouse was hugely important to DS Properties and therefore the developer was seeking hard landscaping products that would complement the traditional surroundings. Tobermore provided the perfect solution in the form of vintage-themed block paving product, Tegula, and striking plank paving product, Manhattan.Alex Knight, Development Surveyor at DS Properties, explained the project objectives: “The Pumphouse is a Grade II listed building constructed in the 1880’s and the aim of the refurbishment and new build scheme was to create the first local purpose-built live/work facility at the centre of Barry’s commercial regeneration, offering 14 live/work apartments, office units, a gym and a restaurant and cafe.”Acanthus Holden Architects was appointed to design the redevelopment works and the new build elements. DS Properties advised the architect that the landscape design needed to incorporate paving products to complement the period-themed Pumphouse building. Alex commented:“As tarmac was incorporated on part of the site, we wanted to break up the space and create a more visually attractive external area. The landscape needed to harmonise with the historic buildings and be sympathetic to the traditional backdrop on site.”ALEX KNIGHT, DEVELOPMENT SURVEYOR AT DS PROPERTIESThe choice of paving supplier was a relatively easy choice for DS Properties as Alex explained: “Tobermore products came highly recommended by one of our trusted suppliers, Robert Price, and after examining product samples kindly provided by the Tobermore South Wales Sales team, the aesthetics and quality was a key factor in confirming our decision to use Tobermore products.”Tobermore’s Tegula and Manhattan block paving was specified as the best method to meet the design vision for the project. Tegula is manufactured with an aged, antique appearance and so it was the perfect choice for the Pumphouse in creating a rustic look and complementing the historic structure beautifully.Manhattan is a plank paving system and although contemporary in style and contrasting to the traditional ambience of Tegula, the addition of this product reflected the modern new buildings on site. Manhattan is manufactured with a granite aggregate surface layer that produces a similar look to natural granite. As part of the landscape design, the linear paving product was delicately intertwined with Tegula to create a stylish square border pattern running throughout. The integration of Tobermore’s Tegula and Manhattan created a fabulous infusion of traditional and modern styles. The project was completed in early 2016, breathing new life into the town of Barry. Although only one building, the Pumphouse in an integral part of the regeneration of the town and is hoped to act as a catalyst for the wider regeneration of the area.Alex commented on the result of the redevelopment scheme: “Thankfully there were no issues encountered during the design and construction process. We are absolutely delighted with the result and in reference to the hard landscaping works, we would most certainly recommend the products and service provided by Tobermore – it was excellent.”
