Case Study - Basement Waterproofing at Retail Premises in Nottingham

Case Study - Basement Waterproofing at Retail Premises in Nottingham

Safeguard Europe Ltd

The basement, a retail space in Nottingham’s central Listergate shopping area, had suffered from problems with water ingress. As part of a £2.4M refurbishment of the building, property consultants, King Sturge, and architects, Chapman Taylor, approached Safeguard to discuss the design of a suitable waterproofing system to upgrade the basement to a level of dryness suitable for a retail environment (BS8102 – grade 3).

Creating Usable Living Space by Making Basements Dry...

Safeguard Europe Ltd

Many properties have unused basements and cellars. With the use of the correct waterproofing system, these can be transformed into wonderful new living spaces. Converting a damp cellar or basement can be a surprisingly straightforward way of increasing living space and can substantially increase the value of your property. Waterproofed basements can be converted into kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, studies, or even home cinemas, you are limited only by your imagination. In commercial premises, common uses for basements include restaurants, bars/nightclubs, additional storage space, retail space, and car parking spaces. This brochure is intended as an introduction to basement waterproofing and its benefits.

Dry Rot and Its Control

Dry Rot and Its Control

Safeguard Europe Ltd

The dry rot fungus, Serpula lacrymans, is often re-garded as the ‘cancer’ of a building. Many myths have built up concerning what this fungal decay is capable of doing, occasionally leading to the belief that the fungus is indestructible and that the whole of the building will have to be pulled down. ‘Dry Rot and its Control’ sets out to describe the fungus its biology, what it can and can’t do, the conditions it must have, and most importantly how it can be readily controlled with the proper combination of environmental and building considerations coupled with the proper use of timber and masonry preservatives.

Oldroyd Xs is a tough damp-proofing membrane that can be laid on top of damp and contaminated concrete floors, or newly laid floor slabs in above ground applications. A wide choice of flooring types can then be laid on top, for example screeds, particle board and laminated wooden flooring. Insulation can be used where required in conjunction with Oldroyd Xs, and the membrane is suitable for use with underfloor heating system.

In below-ground waterproofing applications, the primary function of Oldroyd Xv is to divert water away from the basement walls. When used in conjunction with Oldroyd sealing tapes, Oldroyd Xv can act as a barrier against ground gases, such as methane and radon.

Oldroyd Xv green is the drainage membrane of choice for pitched turf and green roof applications. Oldroyd Xv green is specifically designed for use in turf roof construction. When working on the roof, the unique ‘X pattern’ helps to provide a superior grip. The rubberised outer layer on both sides minimises slipping of the membrane on the roof during laying, providing further grip when laying the turf or sedum. It is also a much safer surface in wet or dusty situations.

Oldroyd Xv clear provides an exceptionally fast and convenient method of creating dry walls and floors in new build and refurbishment projects. The membrane is attached to walls by means of special sealed fixing plugs, whilst on floors there is normally no need for any form of fixing.
