Award-Winning Yorkshire Passive House

Award-Winning Yorkshire Passive House

Norrsken Company Ltd

There's more to this Yorkshire home than meets the eye - literally.Sort Trae is a two-bedroom home and studio and a Passive House . By working with, rather than against, the landscape of the plot, this home manages to be sensitive to the surrounding area while still enjoying panoramic views of the rolling South Yorkshire countryside.Awards & PressNatural Stone Awards 2024 (Commended)Yorkshire Property Industry Award 2024 (Winner: Design Excellence)RIBA Yorkshire Award 2024 (Winner)Grand Designs Magazine (August 2024)Set into a steeply sloping hill, the lower storey is almost entirely concealed on entering the driveway. The only signs of its existence are slick FAKRO rooflights set into a crisp green roof that is surrounded by an open-jointed stone wall.Open the door, though, and a light-filled, naturalistic house full of warm timber accents greets you.The owner of Sort Trae is a former architect herself and designed the project up to the planning stage. It shows. An entire wing of the building is dedicated to a weaving studio where light floods into the creative space through S214A folding doors.Norrsken's triple-glazed alu-clad timber windows and doors provide Sort Trae with glazing that matches the outstanding thermal performance of the building's fabric. Our team was aware that this was to be a Passive House from the outset, so we supplied our P31A window profile for its excellent thermal performance and slim sightline.With S315A sliding doors on the ground floor providing near uninterrupted views of the surrounding countryside, light floods the home. The project also used our S309A framed entrance doors and P33A alu-clad inward-opening windows. We love the way timber window frames pick up wood accents throughout the house - in the stairs, furniture, and even the weaving studio.Says THD founder and director Terry Huggett of Norrsken products:"[They are] amazing windows that I can recommend to anyone looking for high performance, quality and style. I've used them on several projects and always had an amazing experience. My clients love them."

Grand Designs & RIBA Award-Winning Retrofit: Ravine House

Norrsken Company Ltd

Norrsken collaborated with Howard Evans, of Chiles Evans + Care Architects and Terry Huggett Developments to bring to life an iconic mid-century, multi-award-winning retrofit project in the Midlands. Since featured on Grand Designs, the team remodeled the home's performance to EnerPHit standard performance while retaining the original beauty of the house using Norrsken triple-glazed windows, entrance and sliding doors.Awards:Winner of RIBA East Midlands 2022 - Regional AwardWinner of RIBA East Midlands 2022 - Sustainability AwardWinner of RIBA East Midlands 2022 - Project Architect of the Year AwardLonglisted for RIBA / Grand Designs House of the Year 2022Shortlisted for the Stephen Lawrence Prize 2022The BriefThe project sought to radically alter the fabric of the home but leave it looking as if nothing had happened. The resulting building is at once a detailed piece of conservation and radical refurbishment. The extension is sympathetic in material and geometry and yet makes a distinctive new addition that feels at one with the original house. In contrast, the new extension is an unapologetically contemporary addition that serves to open up the living spaces to the mature grounds, creating the clear connections between house and landscape that were previously lacking.Read the full case studyNorrsken discusses the project's challenges, successes, and the mission of sustainable building for the future with Howard, director of CE+CA Architects and the vision behind Ravine House."You must have confidence that the contractors and subcontractors onsite will work to the same standards you expect of your own work... Norrsken's timber alu-clad hybrids are some of the best on the market, and we knew that the Norrsken team's work would be of a very high standard end-to-end."-Howard, Director @ CE+CA Studio, Project Lead

Playful New-Build SIPs Home

Playful New-Build SIPs Home

Norrsken Company Ltd

This new build designed by DMW Architects won the STA Award for "SIP Project of the Year 2024" and received a "Highly Commended Award". The project has a modern look with coloured render and bright yellow door. A favourite here at Norrsken.Alu-clad double glazed P11A and P13A windows were used along with our triple-glazed only S319A sliding door system. With a continuous decked floor running around the rear of the property our technical team had to ensure that frames and door thresholds aligned correctly and the ends result was exactly what the designers wanted.Context & DesignThe project’s material palette, formal restraint, and structural clarity reflect a quiet confidence - rooted in place, yet contemporary in tone. The design embraces suburban domesticity while subtly challenging it, offering a progressive model for low-impact housing within a traditional residential setting. The project has also received a prestigious structural timber award. The house is constructed using a Structural Insulated Panel System (SIPs), supplied by local specialists Ecologic SIPs. This off-site fabrication approach enabled a rapid and precise build, while also contributing to high thermal performance and low operational energy use. The prefabricated structure is wrapped in natural sawn timber cladding at the upper level, resting lightly on a glazed ground floor—creating a floating effect that connects interior spaces directly with the woodland edge.Spatially, the home balances simplicity and playfulness. A generous open-plan ground floor is grounded in views and natural light, while the pitched roof form allows for unique mezzanine-level spaces—an inventive response to family life that offers moments of seclusion and elevation.

With stunning far reaching views the house has a wonderful open plan feel to it.The strong look of the black alu-clad timber windows harmonizes with the natural materials inside and the combination of the insulated timber frame and triple glazed P31A windows give a lovely comfortable living environment. Large fixed glazing elements allow the stunning views to be enjoyed to the full.Architect: RAISE ArchitectsStructure: Ecologic SIPSWindows & Doors: Norrsken "We found Raise Architects through an online search and started by making some rough sketches of what we wanted. Our goal was always to maximize the views, and we had a clear list of rooms we needed. We knew we wanted a well-insulated home and were considering SIPS, MVHR, and other energy-efficient measures. The windows are brilliant, and we're so glad we went with SIPS. Our house doesn’t ever feel cold – and we have no heating upstairs. We achieved an A+ EPC rating and a 1.7 ACH air test, which we're really pleased with."John & Suzanne, Homewoners
