IKOslate was chosen by the client (Walsall MBC) as a low weight, cost effective alternative. The products CO2 credentials were also a key factor. During the installation IKO Rubershield Pro and IKO Armourvent were also installed to provide cross flow ventilation, and IKO’s lead substitute IKOflash was installed in the valleys and for flashing the chimneys. The steep pitch of the roof provided the contractor with a challenge particularly with the cold damp Autumn mornings.

22,000m2 Flame-Free System Used in Sensitive Industrial Refurbishment Improvement was necessary to improve roof and gutter surface water clearance. IKO recommended an overlay on the existing deck, which complied with all the latest British Standards and Regulations. IKO Mach One System was chosen as it provided a flame-free System. Where detailing was difficult IKO Polimar EC/UV System was used. The roof refurbishment also included the installation of smoke vents, associated smoke control panels and accessories.

A robust, trafficable waterproof finish was required to fulfil the brief and this had to be installed with minimal disruption to residents, allowing them access at all times. The waterproofing system needed to offer some slip resistance and be aesthetically pleasing whilst still being functional and robust. Furthermore, the waterproofing works were due to be undertaken during the winter months and so cooler conditions were to be expected and needed to be allowed for.

6,000m2 Enhanced Pedestrian Spaces and Car Park Waterproofing Solution Broadway Plaza is a multi-use facility based in Birmingham City centre; in use 24 hours a day, it houses an array of eateries, leisure and accommodation venues. Water ingress had caused fire retardant paint to peel from the metal structure. IKO Permascreed was introduced to reduce the risk of gassing from the saturated screed. IKO Polimar Fillers and Levelling Mortar were installed to take deflections from the surface. IKO Polimar FCS Walkway System was then applied. Escalators were removed and staircases installed with an IKO Polimar FCS finish.

IKO approved contractor and highway repair specialist, RAB Associates (UK) Ltd, removed the cast iron cover and frames, and removed residual material such as loosened brickwork. The surrounding distressed road surfacing was also removed. Then, using IKO Permatrack Compounds, the re-bedding to match adjacent levels of the previous items was quickly completed. The repair was finished using IKO Permatrack and pre-coated high PSV chippings to fill the surrounding void to match the existing road levels.

IKO Permatec Hot Melt was used in the gutters and balconies where a bison slab was used for the deck. On the main roof area was a timber deck and the preferred system for this was a built-up bituminous membrane system. IKO Challenger 180 nailed layer, IKO Systems Torch-on Underlay and IKO Superflex Cap Sheet were installed. Difficult details were overcome by using IKO Polimar EC/UV cold liquid applied system, then a scattering of mineral was applied whilst still wet to provide a matching finish to the bituminous membrane.

IKO Ultra Prevent T-O Brown cap sheet was specified for the 300m2 flat roof areas, and Armourglass Dual Brown Roofing Shingles were specified for the 200m2 pitched roofs. The roofing shingles were chosen to maintain the original slate effect on the pitched roof areas. The work also involved re-lining of existing steel gutters and improving the thermal performance of the whole roof.

This project was a new build, the main contractor specified the need to house a roof/plant room area at the top of a new office block. Originally, it was thought that a Single-Ply, warm roof installation would be the best solution. However, when consulting with IKO about the main requirements for the roofing solution, both pre and during installation, IKO Permaphalt was the obvious choice due to the speed of installation and the robust nature of the materials that would be used and in an inverted roofing situation, potentially last the lifetime of the building.

One solution to the problem was to extend the existing revetment construction, but this would have required large volumes of excavation with increased times and cost. It was therefore decided to adopt a minimal excavation of the toe area only, infill with a rock layer and fully grout using IKO Bituminous grout. This resulted in a flexible bituminous bound slab, which would follow the future settlement and scour of the toe, thus preventing undermining of the sea wall revetment

Perry Hall Academy, a large primary school built in 1949, with original waterproofing still in-situ. IKO assisted the Academy funding bid by providing a detailed survey report, including intrusive core sample analysis. The roofs were suffering from water ingress, cracks in the mastic asphalt, pooled water and poor heat retention, so decision was made to replace the roofs throughout. New rooflights were also specified to allow more natural light in while the design chosen reduced the external noise transmission. IKO worked with specifier Concept Education Services to deliver the project (some work during term-time) within 6 months.

Walker Primary School was opened in 1953 as a one-form entry primary school with seven classes. Over the years, due to its popularity, it has grown and new buildings have been added. The main car park at their HQ in Warwick had been leaking for a number of years. Various systems had been employed to tackle this, however all had failed. Some areas were ‘out of action’. They were having to hire a nearby car park, then run a bus service, this was costly and inconvenient and caused disruption. The solution proposed and provided by IKO, meant stripping and replacing the existing 6,500m2 car park deck within a twelve week period, in two phases, whilst keeping the remaining 18,000m2 open, minimising disruption to the business, staff and visitors.
