York Railway Station

OVERVIEW

York Railway Station is situated on the east coast mainline which runs between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh Waverley. The station had recently had renovations carried out with the first-class lounge receiving a much-needed uplift. The platform outside the first-class lounge was a mixture of surfaces from years of alterations and maintenance work. LNER were looking for a long-lasting solution to provide a smart nonslip element that didn’t require the existing surfaces to be removed and replaced.

Removal of the existing surface would require the closure of several trainlines which would come at a great cost. WestWood Liquid Technologies provided a solution that could be installed while the station was still operational and could withstand both the movement of the different substrates and the thousands of footfalls the train station receives on a weekly basis. Once cleaned WestWood Wecryl 198 multipurpose primer was applied. All joints and cracks were then locally reinforced using Wecryl R230 and fleece reinforcement. Scratch coats of Wecryl 333 were then applied to remove any undulations within the surface before a full Wecryl 333 wearing course with added Quartz Sand was applied to the full area. Once fully cured and the excess quartz had been removed, Wecryl 488 Finish (RAL 7043) was then applied to leave a crisp and robust finish.

Wecryl PMMA was the ideal solution for this project. The system is catalyst cured and can be trafficked within 15 minutes which allowed the system to be installed and completed prior to the first train of the day, to cause as little disruption as possible work was carried out during the night-time. Wecryl PMMA can be installed to sub-zero temperatures which allowed the system to be installed during the night without risk. The finishing sealer coat was a bespoke RAL colour to match the branding of LNER and gave the perfect finish for the newly open first-class lounge.
