Mercy University Hospital, Cork – BIOTRAP® OBG Grease Management System

OVERVIEW

Mercy University Hospital, Cork —

BIOTRAP® Grease Management System

Project Overview

The Mercy University Hospital in Cork — one of Ireland’s major acute-care hospitals — required a robust, high-capacity grease management solution to support the demands of its large staff catering facility. The catering unit produces a high volume of wastewater containing fats, oils, and grease (FOG), necessitating a system that ensures regulatory compliance, hygiene, and no operational disruption.

Client Requirements

  • Reliable grease interception to protect the hospital’s drainage network.
  • Large-volume capacity to accommodate heavy-duty staff kitchen output.
  • High hygiene standards to meet hospital sanitation & maintenance protocols.
  • Easy maintenance access — minimal downtime for septic/system cleaning.
  • Odour-free operation to preserve building environment integrity.

Our Solution

TaylorMade Greasetrap Solutions provided a bespoke installation of a BIOTRAP® grease-separator system tailored to the hospital’s needs:

  • A correctly sized grease trap to handle high FOG loads.
  • Installation of associated pumping, holding, and discharge equipment to safely manage waste water.
  • Integration with hospital drainage infrastructure and compliance with applicable standards.

For this project, we handled the full scope: design, manufacture, installation, and ongoing maintenance.

Challenges & How We Met Them

High FOG volume from busy hospital kitchen

Supplied a large-capacity grease trap sized for institutional catering loads.

Hospital hygiene & cleanliness requirements

Used stainless steel and hospital-grade materials, ensuring easy cleaning and sanitation.

Minimising disruption in a live hospital setting

Coordinated installation during off-peak hours, ensuring no impact on hospital operations.

Compliance with regulations for healthcare buildings

Delivered a fully compliant system that meets the required discharge and sanitation standards.

Installation & Commissioning

  • The grease-separator system was installed on-site by our engineering team with minimal disruption to hospital services.
  • All connections — drainage, venting, discharge — were integrated directly into the hospital’s wastewater infrastructure.
  • After installation, the system was commissioned under load and passed all performance & hygiene checks.

Performance & Results

Since the installation at Mercy Hospital:

  • The grease trap has operated continuously with no reported blockages or overflow events.
  • Maintenance intervals have been predictable and efficient under the hospital’s facility management plan.
  • The hospital reported zero odour issues, even under peak kitchen use.
  • The system continues to meet hygiene and regulatory standards expected in a healthcare environment.

Key Benefits Delivered

  • Reliable long-term grease management tailored for heavy-duty institutional catering.
  • Reduced risk to hospital drainage network and infrastructure.
  • Low-maintenance and discreet operation — critical in an active hospital environment.
  • Compliance with strict hygiene and disposal regulations.
