The Challenge

Owned by the London School of Economics (LSE), 32 Lincoln’s Inn Fields is a Grade-II listed building. Persistent leaks across a terraced area at the front of the property had caused considerable damage to the basement area below, which was home to computer rooms and teaching space.

The Solution

The existing paving slabs and asphalt covering were removed down to the concrete deck, which was assessed for a new waterproofing system. WestWood’s Wecryl waterproofing products were then selected to rectify the water ingress issues.

The structural concrete was primed with Wecryl 176 followed by the installation of Wecryl 230, a fleece-reinforced PMMA-based waterproofing resin. This created a fully bonded monolithic membrane, eliminating the risk of water tracking underneath the concrete structure.

The waterproofing was also applied around extensive detailing, including new gulley drains and numerous metal stanchion posts.

An additional layer of Wecryl 230 and quartz sand were added to provide extra protection across the trafficable surface. New Yorkstone paving slabs and planters completed the upgrade, enhancing the aesthetics.

The Outcome

The project was completed successfully while adhering to strict timeframes over the summer break, minimising disruption for students and staff.

Accredited for zero falls application, the Wecryl 230 waterproofing prevents standing water from affecting the system’s performance, ensuring the terrace will remain watertight for many years to come.
