OVERVIEW
Project: Major refurbishment and risk-reduction programme spanning multiple departments across a tower-block site.
Product: DeepClean LST Radiator Guards
Scope: 361 guards across 29 projects, totalling 1053 linear metres
Challenges: Large wall-to-wall radiator guards, 24/7 live hospital environment, maternity, radiology and sonography room access
Solutions: Bespoke DeepClean metal radiator covers with tailored sizing, Open Ended Shoulders (OES) for integrated sink areas
Outcome: Seamless delivery across a multi-year programme, balancing scale, safety, and hospital continuity.
Background
A leading NHS hospital in the West Midlands undertook a major refurbishment and risk-reduction programme spanning multiple departments across its tower-block site. The building included maternity, birthing, delivery, and diagnostic areas, each requiring safety upgrades to their heating infrastructure.
Contour was selected to supply and install DeepClean LST metal radiator guards across a range of sensitive hospital spaces, ultimately delivering 361 units over the course of 29 separate projects. If placed end-to-end, these guards would span over 1053 linear metres, reflecting the significant scale of the work undertaken.
The Challenges
Several key factors needed to be addressed for this project:
1. Wall-to-wall, Oversized Radiator Guard Designs
Many rooms required floor mounted radiator guards that spanned the entire width of the wall, with extremely limited tolerance for error. Precision measurements and bespoke manufacture were essential to ensure correct fitting without compromising function or hygiene.
2. Busy Live Hospital with 24/7 Operations
This was a working clinical environment with no downtime - particularly in maternity, birthing and delivery wards. Fitting needed to be completed with minimal disruption to patients and staff, with some areas only accessible outside of clinical hours.
3. Sensitive Clinical and Diagnostic Areas
Radiator guard installations were required in delivery suites, radiography and sonography rooms along with consultation spaces. For diagnostic imaging areas, Contour coordinated overnight installations to avoid disrupting daily medical procedures.
4. Integration with Clinical Infrastructure
In locations where guards ran beneath sinks or around fitted units, Contour incorporated Open Ended Shoulders (OES) into the design, ensuring neat, hygienic finishes by minimising dust traps, and providing secure coverage.
Solution Implemented
Contour supplied a mix of supply-only and supply and install services depending on the requirements of each project phase. The product of choice throughout was the DeepClean LST radiator guard, a floor mounted, metal radiator cover designed for durability, hygiene, and safety in healthcare environments.
All guards were:
Supply and installation services were delivered by Contour’s team in carefully coordinated phases, including overnight work for imaging rooms and installation in high-traffic clinical areas such as the birthing centre.
Key Product Benefit: Easier, Safer Cleaning Access
A key advantage of the DeepClean radiator guard is its drop-down door, built with a patented hinged mechanism. This allows it to be opened fully and safely by a single member of hotel or hospital staff without the need to lift the guard or call in the estates team. Once opened, the design gives full access to all internal surfaces of the guard and radiator, helping improve hygiene protocols and reducing cleaning times.
For facilities teams and estates managers looking for how to clean behind radiators without disruption, DeepClean provides a tried-and-tested solution that balances ease of use with safety.
Project Highlights
Conclusion
This project reflects Contour’s ability to deliver radiator protection at scale without compromising on quality or patient care. By manufacturing floor mounted metal radiator guards with a focus on hygiene, robustness and tailored fit, the project supported safer clinical spaces across a full tower-block NHS hospital.
Despite tight access restrictions and continuous clinical use, Contour worked flexibly to deliver safe, hygienic heating protection exactly when and where it was needed.
