Free Wharf

OVERVIEW

The Free Wharf project is a mixed-use residential development located in Shoreham. The project aims to deliver 145 new apartments, all of which will be affordable homes. Free Wharf combines rented and shared ownership apartments with a strong emphasis on sustainable design, waterfront views, and high-quality urban living environment. It is a pleasure to currently partner with SIG to provide our Masonry Support and a mix of L and C shaped Single Leaf Lintels on phase 2 of the project, with the project due to complete by early 2026.

The coastal location presented unique considerations, primarily related to material durability and corrosion resistance. Designed by CZWG and Allen Pyke Associates, The project uses 316-grade stainless steel, a material renowned for its exceptional corrosion resistance and superior performance in marine environments to ensure long-term structural integrity when in contact with potential sea spray and salt-laden air.

The project encountered intricate engineering considerations during the installation of Masonry Support and Single Leaf Lintels. The floor slab could only support one level of support at a time, which meant that an innovative mounting solution was required. Initial engineering plans proposed fixing Brackets at the top of the slab, however there were concerns about potential clashes with other components.

The engineering team proposed a solution of fixing Masonry Support Brackets to the downstand beam. It was originally a concern that this would clash with the Curtain Wall fixing Brackets, however it became apparent that this would not be an issue as the Curtain Wall fixing Brackets were small enough to avoid any clashes.

Fixing the Brackets to the downstand beams not only eliminated the risk of clashes with other structural components, it also meant that there were significant cost savings for the project. By making intelligent design decisions and through the use of corrosion-resistant materials, the Free Wharf project maintained its focus on sustainability and durability in a challenging coastal environment.
