Conductor, Westfield

OVERVIEW

Conductor is a contemporary new commercial building, located within the Westfield complex, defined by refined materials and architectural precision.

Fit-out contractor DBSJ led the delivery of the technical and manufacturing design, developing the scheme in line with the original design intent by Studio Multi, including the complex staircase environments within the steel cores.

The Light Lab team were appointed to fabricate and install a bespoke Glowrail LED handrail system; working to specification by lighting designers 18 Degrees to deliver an integrated solution within the steel stair cores.

The installation features a continuous LED-integrated handrail in a brushed stainless steel finish, delivering subtle, functional illumination while maintaining a refined architectural presence. The stair geometry introduced a series of carefully negotiated curves and directional changes, each requiring precise forming and welding to achieve smooth, uninterrupted transitions. Consistency of finish across these curved sections was critical to maintaining the purity of the detail.

Key features of the handrail system include the carefully considered transition from unlit rail sections to illuminated runs at the post-to-rail connections, ensuring visual continuity while discreetly integrating the LED elements. The system also incorporates custom-fabricated brackets, precisely engineered to sit within pre-formed apertures in the steel wall lining. With no cover plates used to conceal tolerances, a high level of accuracy in both fabrication and installation was essential to achieve the clean, uninterrupted finish.

All metalwork was completed in-house by our welding team, allowing full control over detailing, alignment and finish quality throughout.

The result is a seamless lighting intervention that enhances safety while reinforcing the building’s material language through craftsmanship and precision engineering.
