Cascade air source heat pump system delivering communal domestic hot water for a 41-apartment residential development

OVERVIEW

A centralised air source heat pump system was installed at Fargate House, a multi-residential apartment building in Sheffield, to provide low-carbon domestic hot water for 41 apartments. The project replaced conventional gas-based plant with a cascade installation of Clivet EDGE EVO air source heat pumps, delivering efficient and reliable hot water generation for the building.

The cascade configuration allows multiple units to operate together to meet varying demand profiles across the development, improving system resilience and operational efficiency. By adopting a centralised heat pump solution, the building significantly reduced its reliance on fossil fuels while lowering operational energy costs. During the first 12 months of operation, the system delivered approximately £78,000 in energy cost savings.

The project demonstrates how communal air source heat pump systems can support residential decarbonisation strategies while providing efficient domestic hot water production for multi-occupancy housing developments.
