Preventing Motorbike Access While Maintaining Inclusive Footpath Use

OVERVIEW

Product: Bison Dual Adjustment K Barrier

Location: Glenfield, Leicester

Project Requirement

A public footpath linking residential areas to open space was experiencing unauthorised motorcycle access, resulting in surface damage and safety concerns.

The requirement was to introduce physical access control while maintaining step-free access for pedestrians, wheelchair users, mobility scooters and pushchairs.

Installed Specification

  • Overall width: 1470 mm
  • Height above ground: 1550 mm
  • Adjustable clear opening: 370–750 mm
  • Galvanised steel construction
  • Stainless steel squeeze plates
  • Optional powder-coated finish

The opening was configured on site to restrict straight-line motorcycle entry while maintaining inclusive pedestrian access.

Selection Rationale

The barrier was selected in preference to fixed chicanes or closely spaced bollards due to:

  • Adjustable clear width allowing site-specific configuration
  • Reduced turning constraints compared to staggered layouts
  • Compact footprint suitable for constrained path widths
  • Robust, low-maintenance construction for public realm use

Outcome

  • Motorbike access prevented
  • Pedestrian flow maintained
  • Wheelchair and pushchair access retained
  • Existing path alignment unchanged

Specifier Considerations

  • Confirm required clear opening width in relation to local inclusive access guidance before final configuration.
  • Consider path width and desire lines to avoid creating informal bypass routes.
  • Assess surface durability around the barrier to prevent erosion in high-wear zones.
  • Adjustable systems may offer long-term flexibility where user requirements are likely to evolve.
