OVERVIEW
OWA spans the design spectrum at the University of Hertfordshire’s Spectra building
We are thrilled to have played a key role in creating the inspirational interior design at the University of Hertfordshire’s new Spectra building by suppling a range of our high-performance ceiling systems.
Designed by Nicholas Hare Architects and built by Morgan Sindall Construction, the £100 million facility in Hatfield is home to the university’s School of Physics, Engineering, and Computer Science. Opened in late 2024, the Spectra building is a bold expression of modern education design which combines collaborative learning environments with energy efficient construction.
Our advanced metal ceiling solutions feature prominently throughout the four floors of the facility. Not to mention, they offer durability, demountability and acoustic control. The central atrium showcases the largest floating metal OWAtecta S80 acoustic ceiling rafts which combine aesthetic precision with sound-absorbing performance. Engineered for flexibility, the S80 acoustic rafts feature multiple demountable hook-on panels. Therefore, making them a versatile choice for open-plan spaces and a smart alternative to mineral wool canopies.
In the specialist teaching and laboratory areas, OWAtecta S32L clip-in system was specified to provide a clean and concealed ceiling. With excellent resistance to wear and offering accessibility, S32L suits high-demand environments where both hygiene and acoustic clarity are key.
Measom was appointed as ceiling installation partner, with the work carried out by its Southeast division based in Essex. Contract Director Andy Hill commented:
“Working with OWA on this landmark scheme has been a real success and one that we can all be proud of. Their products give the design team freedom to realise their visions while meeting all the technical performance requirements. The modular nature of the S80 metal rafts in particular gave us the flexibility to deliver large-scale ceiling features while keeping everything accessible. The S80 acoustic rafts installed in the atrium look fantastic and deliver a professional finish that sets the tone for the whole building.”
A beacon for STEM education, the Spectra building sets a new standard in university design. The project also builds on our growing portfolio of education sector work. Here, adaptable, demountable ceiling solutions are increasingly specified to meet both design intent and long-term functionality.
