Calke Abbey Estate National Trust - Mountain Bike Trail

OVERVIEW

Project Summary

As part of a wider improvement to mountain biking trails at Calke Abbey in Derbyshire, a new timber bridge was required to safely carry cyclists across a natural low point in the landscape. Bison Bridges was selected to supply the structure in kit form to the appointed contractor, who completed the installation on behalf of the National Trust.

The brief called for a durable, low-maintenance solution that would sit comfortably within a countryside setting, while withstanding the rigours of off-road bike use.

Bridge Design & Specification

The finished bridge measures 9.0 metres in length and 2.1 metres in width—sized to accommodate modern trail requirements and ensure safe two-way traffic for cyclists. It features:

  • Splayed Sure-Grip Duo Redwood Parapets – These add a subtle, visual openness and provide effective guidance for riders, while contributing to the bridge’s attractive appearance.
  • Sure-Grip Duo Redwood Timber Deck – Chosen for its strength, weather resistance, and aesthetic value, the timber surface is suitable for year-round trail use including bauxite resin grip strips for public safety.
  • Steel Beam Substructure – The hidden steelwork ensures long-term structural performance and stability with a 120 year design life, extending the lifespan of the bridge well beyond a timber-only design.

Supplied as a pre-engineered kit, the bridge was easily transported and assembled on-site by the contractor, reducing both time and disruption.

Visual Impact and Environmental Fit

Positioned within the historic and wooded surroundings of the Calke Abbey estate, the bridge integrates naturally into the landscape. The redwood timber contrast gently with the woodland, while the low-profile, splayed design avoids visual intrusion.

This sensitive design approach ensured the structure met both the practical needs of the trail and the aesthetic expectations of the National Trust.

Outcome

The result is a robust and attractive crossing that enhances the trail experience for mountain bikers and estate visitors alike. By combining a steel-reinforced structure with a natural timber finish, Bison Bridges delivered a solution that’s both built to last and visually in keeping with its setting.
