Overview: Heidelberg Materials supplied a durable, marine-grade concrete mix for the refurbishment of Dundee’s historic coastal path and sea wall linking the harbour to Broughty Ferry. Designed in collaboration with Sika®, the mix incorporated advanced admixtures to enhance strength, impermeability, and corrosion resistance, ensuring long-term performance in the harsh marine environment.

Heidelberg Materials UK has supplied its evoBuild low carbon concrete containing 85 per cent GGBS to help construct Ashton Canal Bridge in Manchester. In addition to its strength and sustainability credentials, the high GGBS replacement resulted in a very light coloured concrete to help realise the vision of architects Hawkins Brown.Heidelberg Materials UK has supplied its evoBuild low carbon concrete to construct a new bridge over the Ashton canal in the Ancoats district of Manchester.The pedestrian and cycle bridge replaces an old lock bridge which posed access challenges, particularly for those with mobility issues or pushchairs. It has been designed by architects Hawkins Browns to preserve the canal-side setting and links New Islington Green with the marina, providing an important link to public transport. The concrete supplied from Heidelberg Materials’ nearby Salford plant contained 85 per cent evoBuild low carbon GGBS (ground granulated blastfurnace slag), a proven cement replacement product which can be used to reduce the CO₂ associated with concrete while also improving its long-term durability. The use of evoBuild low carbon GGBS also provided concrete with a lighter, more visually appealing, colour in line with the vision of the architect. “The customer required the challenging combination of a high strength concrete containing an extremely high percentage of GGBS for improved environmental performance,” said Hannah Roberts, Area Technical Manager at Heidelberg Materials UK.“As a result, our technical team designed a bespoke mix using modern admixture technology to meet these requirements while also producing a very light coloured concrete without the need to use white cement, which is costly.”The evoBuild low carbon concrete supplied delivered a carbon reduction of 50.7 tonnes compared with a standard Portland cement. 

Overview: The Guildford Sewage Treatment Works relocation supports the Weyside Urban Village regeneration by enabling new housing while protecting surrounding Green Belt land. Heidelberg Materials worked with BAM Enpure JV and Sika to deliver a watertight concrete solution for above‑ground treatment structures on the challenging former landfill site. A total of 660 m³ of waterproof concrete with Sika products, ensured durable, low‑permeability tanks that meet Thames Water’s rigorous standards.

Overview: The Inch Cape Landfall project is a critical part of Scotland’s renewable energy infrastructure, where offshore wind generation is connected to the national grid. Located in Cockenzie, Edinburgh, the project involves the construction of an onshore transmission hub substation. Heidelberg Materials UK supplied 242m³ of PowerCrete from its Glasgow concrete plant, supporting the burial of high-voltage cables as they reached land from the offshore wind farm.

OverviewHeidelberg Materials has supplied the concrete used to cast the (precast) tunnel segments and provide the in-situ lining of the tunnel structure in the central section of the Thames Tideway project. Heidelberg Materials also supplied the concrete for other areas of the works in central section, not covered in this case study.

Overview: Heidelberg Materials supplied PowerSand CBS Extra to support the development of a major battery storage facility at the former Uskmouth coal-fired power station, enabling the transition to renewable energy infrastructure. The low carbon cement bound sand backfill meets the requirements of ENA TS 97-1, providing a reliable solution for underground high-voltage cables.
