Snowdon Summit — Long-Term Security a Decade On
HAG Ltd. - The Door Specialists
OverviewHAG Ltd. first worked with the Hafod Eyri Visitor Centre on Snowdon Summit a decade ago, delivering specialist ArmourGuard industrial doors and roller shutter systems under extreme high-altitude conditions. Since the original contract, we have developed a long-standing partnership, carrying out further works to provide security and fire-protection solutions, ensuring the building remains safe, compliant, and fully operational year-round.The Centre is no ordinary building. Situated at the summit of Snowdon, it is an isolated £8.4 million structure exposed to wind speeds of up to 150 mph and temperatures as low as -20°C. Its architectural highlight, the ‘Window on the World’, offers visitors panoramic views of England, Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man on a clear day — making operational reliability and building protection critical.PartnershipOur long-term relationship with Hafod Eyri reflects trust, technical expertise, and experience working in remote, high-altitude environments. HAG continues to provide:Planned maintenance and emergency support for previously installed ArmourGuard systemsSecurity upgrades tailored to the building’s unique access and operational requirementsFire-protection enhancements integrated with the Centre’s safety systemsThis enduring partnership ensures the Centre can maintain operational continuity, protect visitors and staff, and safeguard one of the UK’s most iconic high-altitude attractions. The ProjectOriginal Contract Award (2015/16)HAG was contracted to design, supply, and install ArmourGuard roller shutters and industrial doors, providing robust security and operational reliability. Our products were fundamental in protecting the building from extreme weather and its unique security needs.High-altitude conditions — including 150 mph winds and -20°C temperatures — meant that this was no ordinary building project; all components were specified for durability, corrosion resistance, and consistent performance under severe conditions.Subsequent WorksSince the original installation, HAG has completed additional works at Hafod Eyri:Security upgrades to access points, reinforcing the building’s protective measuresFire-protection enhancements integrated with the existing safety strategyPlanned maintenance and emergency support, ensuring all systems remain fully operational in a remote and exposed environmentTechnical ConsiderationsExtreme environment engineering: Systems are built to operate in sub-zero temperatures and withstand winds up to 150 mph.Modular installation: Pre-assembled ArmourGuard components allowed minimal on-site assembly, crucial for limited summit access via cable railway or helicopter.Architectural integration: Solutions respect Hafod Eyri’s design and the iconic “Window on the World,” preserving sightlines and visitor experience.Compliance: All installations meet relevant safety, fire, and security standards, giving long-term assurance to facility managers and architects.OutcomeHAG’s work at Hafod Eyri Visitor Centre demonstrates the successful combination of:Engineering innovation to deliver secure, durable systems under extreme conditionsOperational continuity, ensuring smooth visitor experience and safe staff operationsLong-term partnership, providing ongoing maintenance, upgrades, and emergency responsePreservation of architectural highlights, including the “Window on the World,” while maintaining full building protectionOur ArmourGuard products continue to protect Hafod Eyri from the harsh mountain environment and meet its unique security and operational requirements, making it one of the most technically challenging and rewarding projects in our portfolio.Feature / DetailsLocationSnowdon Summit, Hafod Eyri Visitor CentreOriginal Contract2016 installation of ArmourGuard industrial doors and roller shuttersSubsequent WorksSecurity upgrades, fire-protection enhancements, planned maintenance & emergency supportExtreme ConditionsWind speeds up to 150 mph, temperatures as low as -20°CProductsArmourGuard range – industrial doors & LPS-rated roller shuttersInstallation ConsiderationsModular pre-assembly, helicopter/cable railway logistics, weatherproof finishesComplianceFire & safety standards, operational reliability, high-altitude engineeringArchitectural ConsiderationsIntegration with “Window on the World,” minimal visual impactOperational ImpactEnsures continuous visitor access, staff safety, and building security year-round
