The Coopers Fire horizontal range of fire curtains offer an alternative way to close off stairwells and atriums. A fire curtain is used where, if there is a fire, it is necessary to create a temporary barrier within an opening which seals off the area on fire. The curtain descends and prevents any fire and smoke from spreading from one area to another. It also allows people access to protected escape routes without any loss of fire resistance. A FM-1 fire curtain comprises a flexible fire-resistant fabric which is wound around a circular tube. Upon receiving a signal from the fire alarm system or on loss of power the curtain automatically unwinds to its operational position. FM-1 fire curtains have been tested as fire barriers in accordance with EN 1634-1, providing protection for a defined period and at a defined maximum temperature.

Unlike fire shutters, fire and smoke curtains offer a much more unobtrusive way of protecting the premises against the spreading of fire if the user is not concerned with security as well. Furthermore, because the curtain is made from Kevlar and stainless steel thread that has been stitched or hemmed together, the curtain has very little airflow meaning it is very effective at containing smoke. Able to withstand raging fires for up to 240 minutes, this is the perfect product hotels, flats, airports or anywhere where the curtain will only be deployed in the event of a fire and where smoke is a major concern.

A Smokemaster SM5 automatic smoke curtain prevents the movement of smoke and heat generated by a fire from one area to another by channelling or containing the smoke and heat.
