Case Study - Proteus Cold Melt® - Battersea Cats & Dogs Home

Proteus Waterproofing

Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London, the best-known animal sanctuary in the world, is currently undergoing the biggest development in its 154-year history - a £5 million scheme delivered by main contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine. The development will bring the charity’s existing buildings and facilities into the 21st century and will include a new build, state of the art veterinary hospital which will be protected by an innovative new waterproof membrane – Cold Melt® from Proteus – a seamless application designed to work in harmony with the roof infrastructure and so tough that it has been BBA certified to last for the lifetime of the building.Quality Control An integral part of this transformation is the built up roofing system of 1,200 square metres of Cold Melt®. Applied by the Proteus Licenced Contractor, a 5 layer built up system was employed to offer a bespoke specification tailored to the client’s needs and budget. The built up system consisted of a layer of Cold Melt® Proteus’ own innovative, cold-applied liquid membrane, over which an insulation layer of Proteus Pro-Therm XPS was laid. The Licenced Contractor then added a separator sheet of Proteus Low-K followed by an attenuation mat and then three different finishes in three different areas of the roof – paving slabs, a green roof and decking.Health & Safety Proteus’ liquid applied systems are cold installed and therefore negate all the elements of fire risk when working in confined spaces. Of particular importance was the low odour that Cold Melt® exhibits, meeting all the health and safety criteria necessary to protect both the Licenced Contractor’s operatives and the dogs and cats home’s residents.Long term performance Cold Melt® incorporates recycled rubber-crumb and other organically grown products and when covered, creates an elastomeric, seamless and cold applied membrane which has a life expectancy longer that the design life of the building on which it is installed.

It was cut to shape around the curbs cleanly and effectively without leaving vulnerable areas and without delaminating or crumbling, or leaching bitumen. It protected the waterproofing from temporary construction process damage and permanently protected it when covered with hot road grade asphalt afterwards

Kensington Roof Gardens

Axter Ltd

The multi-million pound refurbishment project saw the iconic building and its landscaped gardens restored to their former glory. Axter’s cold applied liquid waterproofing systems delivered a high quality solution to this challenging refurbishment.Systems in useStarcoat® QCStarcoat® PMMAKensington Roof Gardens is one of London’s best known venues, once famous for its flamingos and celebrity guests. The Grade II listed gardens were designed by landscape architect Ralph Hancock and date back to the 1930s. The venue features one of Central London’s most famous intensive living roofs and also includes an indoor restaurant, entertainment space and elevated terracing.ChallengesThe refurbishment of Kensington Roof Gardens was technically demanding. This was due to the complexity of the waterproofing details and space restricted installation locations as well as the specific waterproofing requirements. The refurbishment of the pond and waterways required a liquid waterproofing system that is proven to be safe for aquatic life, is UV stable and meets the aesthetic requirements. In addition, the waterproofing for the elevated terraces and walkways needed to be robust, rapid curing and appropriate for high traffic areas with a high quality, anti-slip finish.SolutionsAxter’s Technical Sales Team was able to provide BBA approved liquid waterproofing specifications for both areas. Axter ensured the highest quality waterproofing installation in all areas.Starcoat QC flame free single component PU resin waterproofing was used for the pond and waterways. The system cures fast in just 4-8 hours depending on the conditions and creates a tough, seamless, elastomeric membrane. This makes it ideal for complex refurbishment projects, such as Kensington Roof Gardens, where effective bridging of cracks and resistance to structural and thermal movement is essential. The robust, solvent free membrane also simplified the waterproofing of the site’s complex details and is resistant to chemicals and root penetration. The Starcoat PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) two component waterproofing, used on the walkways and terraces, is zero fall accredited, hard wearing and can withstand significant loading and mechanical stresses. Available in a choice of colours, traffic and anti-slip finishes, it also provides an excellent solution for complex detailing and challenging application areas.AcknowledgmentsThe refurbishment of the iconic Kensington Roof Gardens demonstrates the versatility of our Starcoat PU and PMMA liquid waterproofing systems. Working closely with our partners, we were able to provide a high-quality technical solution that benefits from a 25-year system guarantee.Phil Wilcox Moore, Managing Director at Axter

Morris Blitz CourtBauder LiquiTEC cold applied liquid waterproofing systemSynopsisMorris Blitz Court is a residential housing estate in Hackney that has undergone an extensive amount of refurbishment works as part of the Decent Homes Programme. Included within the approved scheme was the renovation of all of the building’s balconies and walkways, as well as the transformation of the 1,000m2 concrete podium deck located above the car park into an aesthetically pleasing social space.Bauder Building BoardProject:Morris Blitz CourtLocation:HackneyRoof Area:1,400m²Specifier:Mansell Construction ServicesApproved Contractor:Armour GroupThe specificationVarious waterproofing options were explored by the client, however, it was decided that the Bauder cold applied liquid systems would be the optimal solution given all the requirements.Project challengesOne of the major challenges for this project was the low door thresholds connecting to the podium deck, which couldn’t be raised, meaning that the build-up for the majority of the cold applied waterproofing and landscaping elements would need to be less than 100mm in height. Because of these restrictions the only drainage and protection board suitable within the system was Bauder’s Versicell 20, which is just 20mm in height but can withstand extremely high loading. The surface of the deck consists of three distinct finishes; permeable paving on the ground floor patios and walkways, artificial turf featuring fibreglass planters to serve as a communal garden and rubber mulch to create a play area for children.Balconies and communal walkways were waterproofed with Bauder’s cold applied reinforced waterproofing layer; which is extremely fast curing and can withstand foot traffic within an hour of being installed. Residents remained in situ throughout the installation so working hours were scheduled to accommodate for school hours. Despite the challenges encountered all works were completed on time and to budget. Products appliedBauder LiquiTEC SystemA cold applied liquid waterproofing system that offers the maximum versatility in roofing. Durham Lane Primary School

Axter Ltd

This project for Durham Lane Primary School saw the refurbishment of their existing roof. The previous bitumen waterproofing was showing signs of wear. Isolated areas of leaks had started to form, which was presenting classroom disruption.ChallengesFor funding purposes, the roof area was inspected and separated into two phases. Phase 1 of the roofing works presented a number of potential fire risks with combustible substrates and penetrations. The existing make-up performed poorly when tested against current building regulations.SolutionsFollowing minor remedial works, the existing waterproofing system was inspected and deemed suitable for use as the air and vapour control layer. Thermal and acoustic upgrades were introduced through the installation of Hytherm MW mineral wool insulation, ensuring building regulation compliance and an acoustically sound teaching environment in compliance with BB93.To complete the installation, Hyranger reinforced bitumen waterproofing system was installed, achieving a 20 year insured guaranteecovering waterproofing system materials supplied by Axter. In accordance with the NFRC’s Safe2Torch guidance, cold applied liquid waterproofing was required for detailing to fire risk areas; in this instance, Starcoat R was the system of choice due to uniform aesthetical finish and cost efficiency.Systems in useHyranger®Starcoat® R

Axter Ltd

A high profile residential development located on the derelict site of the once mighty Wimbledon FC, completed in 2008.OverviewAxter designed and supplied a complete structural waterproofing, insulation, drainage and landscaping solution to all elevated podia. The areas were intensively landscaped combining hard and soft finishes, creating a mixture of meandering pedestrian walkways and landscaped recreational gardens with a combined area of 6000m2.ChallengesThe primary challenge was to achieve a robust structural waterproofing system that could provide construction programme design, installation and cost efficiencies.A complex site drainage strategy, combined with multiple hard and soft landscaped finishes of varying depths, resulted in the need for additional drainage and water retention measures to be designed and implemented throughout the site.A high cost and varied landscaping design, with a relatively short seasonal installation time frame, demanded a waterproofing system designer and manufacturing partner that could meet these challenges.SolutionsThe design supply and installation of Wilotekt-Plus, unique second generation hot melt structural waterproofing system, provided 30% quicker on site installation speeds than traditional first generation hot melt systems. This ensured the waterproofing was completed swiftly, in excess of 500m2/day, which enabled landscaping finishes to be installed within deadline. The drainage strategy was simplified across all podia through the creation of a horizontal drainage zone above the waterproofing. Axter’s combined reservoir and drainage board was installed, retaining appropriate moisture levels for the specified plant requirements, whilst allowing excess moisture to drain freely away. It also acted as a permanent shutter for concrete works that allowed secondary structures to be built off these areas without contacting the waterproofing system or interrupting the drainage zone.Intensive hard and soft landscaping was completed by Frosts Landscapes Ltd using conveyor technology to distribute the soil and plants across the podia with ease.Systems in useWilotekt®-Plus

Making the impossible possible

Making the impossible possible

RENOLIT Cramlington Ltd

UNIZO office building CHALLENGE Dedalus Architects specified zinc for waterproofing the timber frame UNIZO office building in Eeklo. Not only for the roof, but also for the facade and bottom side of a unique construction detail. To be precise, waterproofing horizontally, vertically and even upside down! To entirely cover the structure however, appeared not to be possible when using zinc. If you opt to use this traditional waterproofing material a ventilated air space must be provided underneath the zinc covering. This of course entails an opening for ventilation purposes underneath the roof edge, if not, condensation will occur. In the case of a building where the facade has to connect seamlessly with the roof and the underside, leaving an opening is not a possibility. So, despite the attractive appearance of zinc, a waterproofing solution with this material was not an option. SOLUTION Thanks to their collaboration with roofer ALBITUM and previous experiences with RENOLIT roofing products, Dedalus Architects came up with a nice alternative: RENOLIT ALKORDESIGN standing seam imitation. A perfect solution for a difficult challenge. No ventilation needed, no connection problems, the same looks as a zinc roof and, above all, more cost effective!

Green facade covers like an envelope

Green facade covers like an envelope

RENOLIT Cramlington Ltd

Roof and facade cover... CHALLENGE For the design of a youth centre a Belgian architect wanted to have a fully homogeneous and waterproof cover for the roof and the facade. This envelope technique needed to be combined with a more ecological and aesthetically pleasing green wall design. SOLUTION For the waterproofing of the roof surface a standard RENOLIT ALKORPLAN roofing membrane was used. For the facades the architects opted for a RENOLIT ALKORSOLAR fixing system as the base to attach the final greenwall system. As the roof and the wall covering (waterproofing) are the same material there were no jointing issues. The whole building has been covered with RENOLIT ALKORPLAN roofing membrane. The facade details were similarly accomplished as standard roof details and RENOLIT ALKORSOLAR profiles were used to fix the rain water pipes from the roof.
