Harbour Quay Gardens, Wood Wharf, London (2022)

Artform Urban Furniture Limited

Continuing its work at Wood Wharf development in Canary Wharf, Artform Urban supplied a range of bespoke Cumaru seating to Harbour Quay Gardens as finishing touches to complete an extensive phase of the project.Harbour Quay is a new development of residential blocks, office and retail buildings as well as extensive parks & green spaces located on the Isle of Dogs in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is the first time residential properties have been built on the Canary Wharf site. This recent phase seamlessly connects to Artform's previous work at Wood Wharf opening up the waterside space with Cumaru benches and seats running in an impressive line alongside the edge of the docks. The benches and seats feature a traditional and minimal design with high consideration for quality and precision - Cumaru was selected for the benches to ensure consistency across the site, and to match with the boardwalk and existing street furniture. Additional security points were included in a number of seats at certain areas of the site to allow fixings for security barriers. As in the previous project, the seats are branded with laser etched cover plates that feature the Canary Wharf logo whilst also obscuring fixings. Alongside the Cumaru seating, Mooring Point units have been supplied with integrated timber seats on the top. These units securely house all the utility hookup points for boats mooring on the waterfront. The design process was incredibly prescriptive due to the close cooperation needed between the bespoke bench and all the specific utility connection points contained within - becoming one of the most complicated design and approval processes Artform Urban have ever been involved with. The bench consists of multiple internal compartments and individual access doors, some cleverly concealed within the timber cladding. As final additions to the project, Steely Can litter bins have been installed, a product that Artform have consistently supplied to Canary Wharf for over 10 years. The usual design, quality, and service provided by Artform Urban matched the expectations of the UK’s most prestigious developments by delivering high-quality street furniture to this vibrant and continually expanding new urban space.

Spanish Slate Quarries UK Ltd

The Driftwood Spars is a 17th century Grade II Listed building of an immense character. It is a historic building and an essential part of the St Agnes Community, as well as a World Heritage site within an area of an outstanding natural beauty. The Pub is built of the local stone and the huge ship’s timbers and spares, from which it got its name. The building offers a wealth of history, having been converted from a tin mining warehouse, chandlery, sail making loft and fish cellar over the years to a hotel with a public bar.The original roof was made of Cornish Delabole and Trevillet slates, which due to harsh weather conditions and extensive service life have fallen into disrepair. The priority of the free hold pub’s owners and the Architect was to replicate the traditional roofing method, “wet laid” with diminishing slates from 18” to 12” inches, using modern slating method, that would be acceptable by the Cornwall Planning stakeholders.

The Durham Gateway project is a major new development at the Durham University that houses a variety of departments. Although aesthetically stunning, the concept presented several challenging issues. The project was carried out to a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ Standard and as such only used components that had minimal environmental impact. Cold-applied liquid roofing membranes, such as those manufactured by Polyroof, have been recognised by BRE to help roofing elements achieve up to an A+ rating (depending on the roof construction).Part of the works involved the construction of three curved roof areas that required a high-performance and durable waterproofing system which was to be covered by a timber shingle system. The shingles were supported by over 1,170 steel stanchions – all of which were seamlessly waterproofed with the Protec System. The main contractors of the project, Laing O’Rourke, were able to achieve the visual impact they wanted with the peace of mind that the roof was protected by a totally seamless and highly durable waterproofing membrane.

As well as repairs, we’ve been responsible for installing conservation-approved double-glazed sashes, alongside our draught-proofing system.Working around the hotel’s busy times was of paramount importance with this project – so we arranged to complete our work when they were closed for other refurbishments, or when they were unable to welcome guests due to Covid restrictions. To date, we’ve completed three phases of works. In July 2020, we worked on the striking Morning Room three-part bay window, then in November 2020 we repaired the sash window in the South Room and, following this, in November 2021 we returned to work on the Batchelor Room and the three-part bay window in the restaurant. Phase four is planned in for March 2022.”  Mr Ibbotson commented, “The work has made a huge difference, not only to the finish of our hotel, but more importantly to the comfort our guests enjoy. The team from Ventrolla have expertly completed repairs, installed double glazed sashes and replaced sills on around 10 windows so far, and we’re delighted with everything they’ve done for us.They’ve been flexible with their schedule, so we could stay open as much as possible – we’ve really appreciated how closely they’ve collaborated with us. They have been a pleasure to work with and we can’t wait to see the results when the remaining windows are completed.”You can follow Knockinhaam Lodge on Instagram for regular updates, events and stunning photography showcasing this landmark property and it’s surrounding views. Do you have a sash and case window project you need to tackle?Whatever issues with your sash windows, Ventrolla can help. UltraCrete repairs troublesome chamber on busy London road

Instarmac Group plc

Road users in Kensington Church Street in Bayswater, are now enjoying a peaceful commute after Openreach and Centercomms Ltd replaced a long-standing failed access cover using UltraCrete’s market-leading access cover reinstatement materials.BackgroundClient Openreach, and contractors Centercomms Ltd, were once again required to repair a failed ironwork chamber on a busy central London street – the longest standing failed unit on their work stack. The ChallengeThe troublesome unit was located on Kensington Church Street in Bayswater – an extremely difficult and busy area in Central London. Working in London can be challenging as traffic management permits can be difficult to obtain and, due to heavy traffic, all work must be completed within 9.30am – 3.30pm.As well as a tight turnaround, upon arrival it became clear very quickly that chamber was damaged and the brickwork needed to be excavated. The SolutionWith this in mind, contractors Centercomms Ltd, working for, and on behalf of, Telent, chose to use UltraCrete’s market-leading maintenance solutions to replace the failed unit. UltraCrete has a reputation of providing the industry with expert and approved materials that reach required compressive strengths very quickly, helping operatives to complete installations before the 3.30pm deadline. To begin, the damaged brickwork was removed and timber shuttering installed using UltraCrete QC10 F. This fast, strong and easy to use flowable concrete provides an extremely robust repair in just 20 minutes.Using the SG Pam Install Plus frame installation system, Centercomms Ltd carefully placed the frame and used a string line to ensure it was level with the existing road surface.Once in position, Envirobed® CD534 Red high performance bedding mortar was applied to the inner face and chamber top and the timber shuttering was then placed 50mm beyond the flange. After Envirobed® CD534 Red had fully cured, Envirobed® CD534 Flowable Red was mixed and poured to fully bed and encapsulate the frame to a minimum depth of 35mm.To complete the installation, operatives returned the lid into position, applied SCJ seal and tack coat spray to the vertical edges of the existing road surface and frame ahead of the asphalt reinstatement.ResultsThe entire installation took just two and a quarter hours to complete, much to the delight of the client, contractors and road users.

Lonsdale Patent Glazing & Rooflights

The Egyptian Gallery was the first of many projects at the Museum to benefit from a replacement duo-pitch rooflight using Lonsdale’s ThermGard Roof Light System. After having procured roof lanterns of varying quality and with disappointing results from different manufacturers, the Client was determined to establish a design that met their very high criteria for thermal performance and protection of the priceless exhibits from damaging UV light. Whilst wanting the benefits of modern aluminium systems, there was a requirement for a ‘heritage’ appearance so that any replacement roof lanterns mirrored the original timber construction. High performance solar control glass was also specified to reduce harmful UV light to the exhibits below. Solar protection was further enhanced by the fitting of external shading blinds to the overhead glazing which produce the slightly ‘eerie’ affect that can be seen in this image. Such was the success of this initial project, the Client has held Lonsdale as the benchmark by which other roof light manufacturers are measured and we repay this loyalty by ensuring a first class job every time.

The matte surface features a natural looking fine wood grain with a true to life embossing, while the tile’s special backing is designed for comfort and improved impact sound reduction. This has helped to control the noise in the expansive reception area.Heather continued: “We chose Allura Flex for its natural looking characteristics. The extra-large 150 x 28 cm planks were perfect for such a large space, while the 5mm thickness and 1mm wear layer offers exceptional performance, making it the ideal solution for this high traffic area.”Forbo’s Tessera Cloudscape carpet tiles in the green hues of Monsoon Cloud and Summer Storm have been used throughout the offices and meeting rooms. In the open office area, Cloudscape has been installed in conjunction with Allura Flex, again in the Brown Raw Timber colourway, to create separate work and meeting/breakout zones. Forbo’s range of Tessera carpet tiles combine well with Allura Flex LVT, as the same adhesive can be used during installation, which means there is no need for transition strips, enabling a seamlessly integrated flooring design.

High Baxter Street, Bury St. Edmunds

Best of Lime Ltd

11 High Baxter Street is within the Town Centre Conservation Area and is located in one of the streets which make up the Norman planned town set out on a grid system in the 12th Century. It is however a sole survivor, the rest of the street having been demolished in the 1960’s.The property has a core dating back to the 15th Century, with alterations in every century after. By the end of the 20th Century however, having survived 500 years, it was distinctly unloved, had become flats, then eventually a semi-derelict squat. In January 2019 the Bury St. Edmunds Town Trust (BTT) had come to its rescue, completing the pur- chase of the building and drawing up plans for the conservation and restorationA detailed condition report was carried out by local RIBA conservation architects Whitworth.Best of Lime’s Warmcote insulated lime plaster was specified as the base coat, with our Limecote tra- ditional chalk/lime plaster as the finish. Both products are non-hydraulic and designed to cope with the extreme background movement of an historic timber frame.

Making the impossible possible

Making the impossible possible

RENOLIT Cramlington Ltd

UNIZO office building CHALLENGE Dedalus Architects specified zinc for waterproofing the timber frame UNIZO office building in Eeklo. Not only for the roof, but also for the facade and bottom side of a unique construction detail. To be precise, waterproofing horizontally, vertically and even upside down! To entirely cover the structure however, appeared not to be possible when using zinc. If you opt to use this traditional waterproofing material a ventilated air space must be provided underneath the zinc covering. This of course entails an opening for ventilation purposes underneath the roof edge, if not, condensation will occur. In the case of a building where the facade has to connect seamlessly with the roof and the underside, leaving an opening is not a possibility. So, despite the attractive appearance of zinc, a waterproofing solution with this material was not an option. SOLUTION Thanks to their collaboration with roofer ALBITUM and previous experiences with RENOLIT roofing products, Dedalus Architects came up with a nice alternative: RENOLIT ALKORDESIGN standing seam imitation. A perfect solution for a difficult challenge. No ventilation needed, no connection problems, the same looks as a zinc roof and, above all, more cost effective!

Kidwells Estate

Kidwells Estate

Schöck Ltd

Kidwells Estate, on the outskirts of Maidenhead in Berkshire, is undergoing major regeneration involving seven new blocks, which are part timber clad and vary from three to six storeys of structural concrete frame. Long cantilever walkways that service multiple flats are a feature of the new development and the unusual design demands of the walkways presented a technical challenge. The solution required a relatively unusual combination of products and Schöck resolved the various issues by designing in its Isokorb® T type HP. It is a product utilised only if horizontal, tension and compression forces are present in the design and additionally it is necessary to integrate the Schöck Isokorb® T types Q-P as well, for linear or point connection to support high shear loads. Schöck Dorn type SLD Q50 heavy duty stainless steel dowels were also incorporated to enable the transfer of vertical shear forces and allow two directional lateral movements at the expansion joints. The result was a completely secure thermally insulated load-bearing connection at all of the restricted, but key structural points.

AKRI retaining planters drive biodiversity at Ferntower Road, London

Furnitubes International Ltd

Located in the historic district of Islington in North London, Ferntower Road is close to the popular green space, Newington Green. A dull and empty public space lies at the end of the road, nestled between local shops and cafes that passersby wander through.Islington Council wanted to improve the quality of air on streets and neighbourhoods, by introducing a green corridor which would make the space more inviting and encourage the locals to sit and relax.Working with local Landscape Architects, the plan was to help improve the public space by taking an inclusive approach. By using our AKRI 600 retaining planters, large scale planting beds were designed as part of a scheme, driving biodiversity and reducing air pollution in the area.A total of four AKRI planter shapes were crafted and manufactured in corten (a naturally corrosion resistant material). The AKRI system includes a timber seating module with cladding (which complements the AKRI unit) that was added to further bring people closer to nature. In the community, the planters and seating are well received as a new addition to the once unused public space.

Junckers creates bespoke parquet to replicate original National Gallery floor

Junckers Ltd

Junckers solid oak Herringbone flooring has been installed at the National Gallery of Ireland as part of extensive refurbishment works. Architects Henegan Peng’s brief to provide a more accessible route through the collections has resulted in an elegant and historically sensitive upgrade for the Gallery. The solid wood parquet floor in the Dargan and Milltown Wings was installed by DJ Kelly & Co Ltd. The new floor in the Milltown Wing replaced an original timber floor and in the Dargan Wing, Junckers created a bespoke wood block to replicate the pattern of the original tiled floor. Herringbone parquet floors, historically found in country estates, castles and mansion houses, have become one of Junckers’ most popular floors. The elegant aesthetic of the geometric pattern coupled with the naturally occurring structural grain pattern found in solid oak has made parquet the flooring of choice for anything from public buildings and offices to homes and apartments. A solid oak floor by Junckers is very durable and can be sanded and refinished several times, ensuring the floor will last a lifetime.

The original structure at the heart of the Arboretum is a masterclass in timber post and beam construction, although the exposure to weather in the south of Ireland provoked some deterioration in the building fabric and to the original roof. PAC DESIGN STUDIO, Dublin, were appointed by the Office of Public Works to survey and establish a contract for fabric replacement and repairs to this beautiful structure, which were completed in 2021. The original roof was replaced and the new roof now features PREFA PREFALZ P.10 Dark Grey Standing Seam.
